Public Domain cartoon characters from Golden Age comic books
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit going (mostly) into the public domain is a pretty big deal. In the next ten years a lot of animation from the 1930s will wind up in the hands of all artists who want to use them. But did you know there's a huge amount of cartoon characters from the 1940s that are totally free to use? It isn't just cartoons that starred on the silver screen that have fallen out of copyright. (Of course, I'm using the word "cartoon" somewhat loosely...)
See, when US copyright law was revised in 1976 and went into effect in 1978, works created before 1964 were required to have their copyright renewed before the end of 1980, or else they would become public domain. Hundreds if not thousands of Hollywood movies and other types of media had been made by studios and publishing companies that went bankrupt and were completely dissolved decades prior to this new law. This included the cartoons made by studios such as Bray, Van Beuren, and many others- but it also included comic books.
If you weren't a big comic book company like DC or Marvel, chances are you shuttered your doors sometime in the 1950s or early 1960s. And during the 1940s, with the rise in popularity of Looney Tunes, Woody Woodpecker, Tom and Jerry, and Droopy, comic book publishers were printing tons and tons of comic books starring wacky, slapstick-oriented animal characters. Most of these titles went out of copyright, and there are lots of fun and interesting characters to be found in them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the most historically notable is Supermouse. When the first Mighty Mouse cartoon premiered, he was called Supermouse, but what they didn't know was that Pines comics had already taken the name, and successfully sued for copyright infringement even though they were both parodies of Superman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the most interesting titles I've come across is Funny Films. The conceit of the series is that these are actually cartoons you can watch in a movie theater, except it's a comic book. A bit confusing, I know.
The end result is a series of fourth wall breaks so absolutely thorough in their scope that the fourth wall really doesn't exist anymore, barring actually jumping out of the page (or your computer screen) and blowing up your living room. They talk to the audience, jump out of the screen, and even show up late for the cartoon to start. This is of course the bookends to a whole bunch of slapstick gags and goofy dialogue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another interesting series, especially if you're a fan of Archie, is Hi-Jinx. They basically took the premise of teeny-boppers in high school and made them into funny animals. Most of the stories have something to do with swing music and dancing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And although they're crudely drawn, one of the more unique character concepts is Pussy Katnip, found in various titles scattered across the mid-1940s, usually buried amongst a bunch of more normal stories with ordinary human characters. Pussy Katnip looks like one of your classic film noir glamorous beauties, except she's an anthropomorphic cat. Think Minerva Mink but feline. She may appear to be a femme fatale at first, but she's actually a crimefighter. To do this she chugs a mysterious beverage that gives her enhanced strength and intelligence. She's sort of a mystery-solving superhero.
Tumblr media
Her appearances are random and kind of hard to find. Here are the titles of the ones currently circulating online: All Your Comics (1944 issue) All Top Comics (one-shot) All Good Comics Everybody’s Comics (1944 issue) Green Mask v1 #11 Ribtickler v1 #1 All Great Comics (1945 issue) Book of All-Comics Green Mask v2 #2 Rocket Kelly #2 Zoot Comics #1
Often these comics, especially in the early '40s, remind me of the artwork of underground comics of the '70s- not quite rubberhose, not quite Looney Tunes. The kind of thing you might find on a punkabilly album cover.

And ocassionally you'll come across characters with a suspiciously familiar name:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One thing to watch out for is the occasional Donald Duck knock-off, some more obvious than others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now you may be asking: Where can I read these comics? Simple: https://digitalcomicmuseum.com/ Just be sure you have the right software to read them. I use cooViewer. Another incredibly useful resource is www.comics.org.
So if you're like me and you're too impatient to wait for Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck to fall out of copyright, and you want to do something more unusual and unexpected, there are dozens and dozens of comic books with silly, wacky characters that can be utilized in your own original stories, cartoons, and what have you- and you can monetize them too!

What are the origins behind Witch Hazel from 1952's Trick or Treat, and is she canon to the larger Disneyverse?
According to some of the Italian Disney Comics, hwr backstory is that she was born a witch in a place called "the Witch Country", and was sent out into the world to get people to believe in magic again.
Since she is a human in a world largly populated by anthropomorphic animals, I'll sat that the Witch Country is probably located in the Everrealm, and she's crossed over into the Ducktales reality.
Here's what she looks like for anyone who hasn't seen her before!

She's in a pretty cute Donald Duck cartoon where she helps the triplets get candy from a stingy Donald on Halloween :)

Magica de Spell and Morgana Macawber making magic potions - Witch School - Duckverse and Darkwing Duck - Gift for my friend
I should have done this earlier, but for some reason I didn't manage until now, but I'm definitely posting a new drawing that my friend requested me to do.
I drew Magica de Spell and Morgana Macawber, famous duck witches who work together to make magic potions and teach their female students how to master them. Yes, usually Magica and Morgana were rivals, as Magica is an evil witch who wants the One Dime, while Morgana is a good witch, though sometimes bad when it comes to business and their conflict is explained in more detail in the Darkwing Duck comics (especially by James Silvani).
However, they can also be good partners regarding their common interests. So I drew them together throwing powder and casting a spell on making new potions. Apart from them, there are also Minima De Spell (Magica's niece) hugging Ratface (poor him, Magica's pet crow by the way), Streghella de Spell (also Magica's niece and a student at the witch school), Paperelfo (Magica's apprentice assistant), Hocus and Pocus (Magica's students who go to school for witches, mostly appearing in Egmont comics), Roberta (Magica de Spell's best friend and partner in evil spells, appearing in Italian comics), Witch Hazel (you know her from Trick or Treat, but she is also a friend of Magica and Madam Mim from the comics), Madam Mim (you know her from The Sword in the Stone, but she often appears in Donald Duck comics, as a friend of Magica De Spell), Poe De Spell (brother Magica de Spell who appeared in the Ducktales 1987 version as a crow) and Aunt Nasty (Morgana's aunt). I mostly combined from the OG Ducktales, Darkwing Duck and Donald Duck comics, but in my own way.
I hope you like this drawing and the set of witches as well as the witch school as well as the crossover of Ducktales, Duck comics and Darkwing Duck, although to me it's all the same universe, no matter how much someone thinks otherwise. By the way, this is a gift for my friend, who asked for this, @boingodigitalart. Feel free to like and reblog this, just don't use my same ideas without crediting me. Thank you!

Warner bros., you may have gotten through some messy corporate shakeups, and I’m still bitter towards recent cancellations, but your animated library will always have me coming back for more. Happy centennial, Warner Bros!

Duckvember Day 25: Maniacal Duck/Duckvember Late Day 23: Nude Duck
Since this one is a two-fer, I went with doing the first drawing of Magica and her two cousins Abrazella and Matilda along with Witch Hazel and Madam Mim. Day 23 was a bit late since I'm not really comfortable with drawing nudity but kept it at a mildish level after changing my mind.

Tony Stark and Emma Frost as Hazel Kendal go on a secret mission to Gameworld in space in order to get the Mysterium. The spaceship arrives and out pops the Skrulls along with Starfox the Eternal and a former Avenger. Starfox brought in the Skrull agents as their back-up by having them switch places and pose as "Tony & Hazel" so that the real Tony and Emma could go to space with him. As they reach the Gameworld, Tony and Emma found themselves in the middle of the crossfire in a fight between the guards and space pirates but they managed to fight off the aliens of both sides. Meanwhile, Starfox doesn't use his pheromone charm powers on the aliens, instead he disguised himself as a lost, pregnant alien woman bystander. Then, the trio managed to gain access to the vault for the Mysterium. After taking some Mysterium from the vault, Starfox sends Tony and Emma back to Earth.

I like to think Carl Barks saw the storyboard for the Trick or Treat short and was like, “Okay this is great and all but it needs to be more insane and also Donald REALLY needs to fight back here, like even more of a bastard, you know, and also he and Hazel are friends at the end”

Ok no restraint. I loved all aspects in this story. Like the art quality, the characterisations…. Bruh, it’s implied Daffy invited Bugs to trick or treat with him — only for Daffy to kinda try and show off??? “This duck works solo” mofo, did you invite Bugs just to try and show him up?
Also I love how they aren’t even competing they’re just trick or treating together; and both feel cheated out together. Daffy being scorned by the parents, and Bugs being completely oblivious to the success he’s getting cuz he was told beforehand that they would get carrots for the trick or treating. This is the kind of dynamic I like most from them, but y’all already know that. Daffy and Bugs hanging out together, without Bugs having orchestrating things beforehand, or Daffy trying to get Bugs killed or sm.
Present day thoughts:
Still one of my favourite Baffy adventures in the comics.
I think I have to address Daffy's wrong turn during the chase sequence since I personally have my misgivings about Daffy making wrong turns when wrong turns are Bugs' thing.
It's not a severe thing in this instance -- compared to, say, Space Jam having the punchline be that Daffy confidently took the wrong direction to MJ's house. See, I only feel nit-picky about this since it's pretty established that between the two of them, Bugs is hopeless with navigation and Daffy gets on his case about it because it's THAT BAD that Daffy becomes the defacto voice of reason.
But as I say this, I have to emphasize: Daffy's only navigationally better than Bugs. Past that, in Duck Dodgers, he overshoots the directions to Planet X to the point that he can't navigate it.
So Baffy consists of one directionally-challenged rodent, and a bird who, at least, knows how to "fly" South for the winter. Promising stuff
