i cant remember what it was i read the other day that made me go “oh yeah! dominus OWNED rewind” (which is crazy cuz it’s like the central pillar of their relationship but i kind of forget abt it sometimes with the Everything Else they have going on) but i just kept microwaving that thought around and around in my head like. what does this remind me of what is this pinging in my brain and i finally realized oh yea. duh. it’s pearlrose

i just think there’s this really interesting parallel here! a high ranking aristocrat that falls in love with their slave and has their eyes opened to the evils of their society and fights for the rest of their life to combat that evil —a person who’s dead before the story begins, who haunts the narrative, a person who isn’t around to defend any of their past actions, a person whos selfishness and kindness are laid side by side, and you just have to take them at face value.

there’s also just the whole aspect of rewinds all consuming devotion to dominus. of the two, pearl clings to the structure of her relationship with rose much more than rewind does. rewind, on the other hand, is very independent, and we never see him mooning over dominus in the submissive awestruck way pearl does for rose, but you can’t ignore the fact that, well. dominus OWNED him. dominus also freed him, he gave him his life, he gave him his future. dominus clearly loved and valued rewind but there was an imbalance there. can’t help but wonder if this didn’t influence doms leaving. just like with rose, we don’t really know what his frame of mind was when he left. did he have every intention of returning one day? did he knowingly leave without a word, or was it out of his hands? did he think “maybe now rewind can have a life of his own, free from the final shackle of his servitude”?

idk. personally i love a character that’s ambiguous in their morality, depending on the individual read, the lense through which they’re presented, or just the circumstances their actions caused that they no longer have any control over (because they’re dead). one mans irredeemable trash is another man’s christ dying on the cross etc etc.
