Remembering Sabu Dastagirr the first Indian actor to make it big in the Hollywood on his 54th death anniversary.
Sabu Dastagir (27 January 1924 – 2 December 1963), born Selar Shaik Sabu or Sabu Francis, was an Indian film actor who later gained United States citizenship. He was normally credited only by his first name, Sabu, and is primarily known for his work in films during the 1930s–1940s in Britain and America. He was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
When he was 13, Sabu was discovered by documentary film-maker Robert Flaherty, who cast him in the role of an elephant driver in the 1937 British film Elephant Boy. This was adapted from "Toomai of the Elephants", a story by Rudyard Kipling. In 1938 producer Alexander Korda commissioned A. E. W. Mason to write The Drum as a starring vehicle for the young actor.
Sabu is perhaps best known for his role as Abu in the 1940 British film The Thief of Bagdad, starring . Director Michael Powell said that Sabu had a "wonderful grace" about him. In 1942 Sabu played another role based on a Kipling story, namely Mowgli in Jungle Book directed by Zoltán Korda where he plays a feral child whose animals are in danger by human villagers. He starred alongside Maria Montez and Jon Hall in three films for Universal Pictures: Arabian Nights (1942), White Savage (1943) and Cobra Woman (1944).
After becoming an American citizen in 1944, Sabu joined the United States Army Air Forces and served as a tail gunner and ball turret gunner on B-24 Liberators. He flew several dozen missions with the 370th Bomb Squadron of the 307th Bomb Group in the Pacific, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his valor and bravery.
His career declined after World War II as he was unable to secure equivalent roles in Hollywood that British films had offered. He occasionally did gain significant parts, such as his supporting role in the British film Black Narcissus (1947). Through most of the 1950s he starred in largely unsuccessful European films. In 1952, he starred in the Harringay Circus with an elephant act. His last completed film, A Tiger Walks, was released in March 1964, three months after his death.

The Best London Restaurants With Halal Options (2)
Eating halal means that you pretty much find yourself turning vegetarian when you’re eating out. And while most restaurants offer some excellent options for non-meat eaters, it doesn’t mean that watching someone else eat a burger while you’re eating another halloumi wrap hurts any less. Which is why we’ve made a list of some of the best London restaurants with halal options. From Lebanese bakeries to a philly cheesesteak-specialising dive bar, you’ll be sure to find some top-quality halal food at any of these restaurants.

Halal status: Everything
This cosy little restaurant in Islington is 100% halal. Yes, you read that right. Everything, from the sirloin steak to the glazed lamb rack and dry cocktails, is halal. But what you should come here for is their excellent weekend roast. It’s the only thing they serve on the weekends, and you get a choice between dry-aged sirloin beef, chicken breast, or slow-roast lamb shank. Although we’d happily eat them all, the beef is the star of the show. It comes with all the trimmings, gravy, and a sense of satisfaction that you can only get from finally eating a halal Sunday roast that you didn’t make.
 Novikov ££££ 50a Berkeley St
Halal status: Beef, lamb, and chicken
First thing you need to know is that this restaurant has two rooms with two menus: one serving Italian food and another serving everything from lamb cutlets and wagyu steaks to sushi and dim sum. And while this Berkeley Street spot might resemble countless other high-end ‘fusion’ restaurants that charge you a week’s salary for a mediocre black cod, the difference is that some of the food here is pretty excellent. Don’t get us wrong, you will probably get charged a week’s salary, so make it count and try the sweet and sour chicken, the beef fillet in a black pepper sauce, and the spicy prawn moneybags.
 Dishoom Carnaby £ £ £ £ Indian  in  Soho ££££ 22 Kingly St
Halal status: Lamb and chicken
Known for its lengthy queues and Bombay street food, this Indian mini-chain is now a permanent mood. A fine-I’ll-wait-for-an-hour-for-their-garlic-naan kind of mood. So much so that we have a whole guide on where to go when you’ve had enough of people suggesting Dishoom. We come here for the chicken ruby curry, lamb chops, and keema pau.
Karolina Wiercigroch Berenjak £ £ £ £ Middle Eastern  in  Soho ££££ 27 Romilly Street
Halal status: Chicken and lamb
Corridor-like space. A rotating tower of shawarma meat. And taftoon bread on demand. Are these the specs we listed on our ‘pimp my ride’ application? Maybe. Are they more enjoyable inside this Soho restaurant? Definitely. Visit this Persian spot in Soho for mazeh, juicy kebabs, and a baklava ice cream sandwich.
 Farzi Cafe £ £ £ £ Indian  in  Mayfair ££££ 8 Haymarket
Halal status: All meat except venison (and pork of course)
This modern Indian spot is great for Dishoom lovers, or anybody around Piccadilly Circus that likes chicken tikka masala and dimly lit rooms. The menu ranges from classics like lamb chops and biryanis, to things like wagyu beef kebab, and butter chicken bao. And their outdoor seating makes it a great spot for an al fresco dinner.
 Meatliquor W1 £ £ £ £ Burgers ,  Diner  in  Fitzrovia ££££ 37 - 38 Margaret Street
Halal status: Chicken
Yes, we’ve made many mistakes in the past [please see: double denim], but putting Meatliquor on this list isn’t one of them. The chicken at this loud and proud American diner is very much halal. Which means you can get their excellent monkey fingers, which is Meatliquor for: battered chicken strips in house-made buffalo sauce, their dirty chicken cheeseburger, and most of their starters and sides which are vegetarian. Don’t leave without trying the hippie fries.
Giulia Verdinelli Kama By Vineet £ £ £ £ Indian  in  Knightsbridge ££££ 87-135 Brompton Road
Halal status: Fully halal
We once wrote a poem about the saffron mash at this Michelin spot in Harrods. It went something like this: we love you. We’re not very good at poems. But the saffron mash is just one of the many things that makes this the kind of Indian restaurant you immediately crave anytime someone says the word yellow. Or Knightsbridge. Or coconut-lemongrass prawns. Order the butter chicken and pistachio lamb chops. At least.
 Karolina Wiercigroch Brigadiers £ £ £ £ Indian  in  City ££££ 1-5 Bloomberg Arcade
Halal status: Chicken and lamb
We’re pretty sure that if you break Brigadiers down to ingredients, it goes something like this: three parts excellent food, two parts Thierry Henry oil portraits, and twenty parts unfiltered fun. We’re talking a pool room, card games, and live sport on demand. And if that isn’t enough to get you there, then let us introduce you to the best lamb chops in London. Uh-huh, we said it.
Giulia Verdinelli Da Mario £ £ £ £ Italian  in  Kensington ££££ 15 Gloucester Rd
Halal status: Ask for the halal menu
This old school Italian spot in Kensington has been around for decades, and not only does it have some pretty decent vegetarian options, but it also has a separate halal menu which you can get by asking a server. Come here for big portions of feel-good pasta, and great pizzas at a decent price.
 Giulia Verdinelli Yasmina £ £ £ £ Lebanese ££££ 18 Western Avenue
Halal status: All meat is halal
This Lebanese bakery is right on the A40. It isn’t surrounded by other restaurants or bakeries, it’s tricky to get to without a car, and it’s got some of the best Lebanese manakeesh you can get in London, which it serves until 10pm. It’s usually populated with regulars coming in for a chilled brunch, or a speedy shish taouk and fattoush lunch. Although their mains are good, the real reason you come here is for the manakeesh, specifically the meat and cheese, and spinach and cheese. And for £3.50 a pop you can easily enjoy a satisfying brunch for under a tenner.
Karolina Wiercigroch Hoppers £ £ £ £ Sri Lankan  in  Kings Cross ££££ 4 Pancras Square
Halal status: Chicken and lamb
What if I’ve made the wrong choice? Why did the server’s left eye twitch when I ordered that? Did I lock the front door when I left? Yes, food envy can have you questioning everything. But you can relax, because we haven’t met a dish at this Sri Lankan restaurant that we didn’t like. Everything is excellent, from the dosas to the lamb shank buriani, to the biggest prawns you will probably ever lay eyes on. Plus, the food is designed for groups, which means your food envy can take a day off.
 Chik'n £ £ £ £ American ,  Burgers ,  Takeaway  in  Marylebone ££££ 134 Baker street
Halal status: Chicken
Fried chicken, but make it fashion, and halal. This upmarket chicken spot in Baker Street is excellent. And everything from the chicken tenders to the hot wings to the straight up chik’n sandwiches taste fresh.
Giulia Verdinelli Passyunk Avenue £ £ £ £ American  in  Fitzrovia ££££ 80 Cleveland St
Halal status: Beef, chicken, and turkey are halal
Like flower walls and 19-year-olds on yachts, a philly cheesesteak is something we’re mostly used to seeing on Instagram. Enter Passyunk Avenue, a Philadelphia-inspired spot and dive bar that you can experience in 3D. AKA real life. The cheesesteak is made with shredded rib-eye steak and your choice of cheese in Italian hoagie bread. It’s moreish in all the right ways, and once you try it, you will be back. They also have some pretty good buffalo wings if you’re in the mood for chicken.
Gökyüzü Restaurant £ £ £ £ Turkish  in  Harringay ££££ 26-27 Grand Parade, Green Lanes
Halal status: All meat is halal
In case you don’t already know, Gokyuzu is a Turkish restaurant in Harringay that lives in our hearts rent free. We’d go for the manti, the chicken wings, the cop shish, and the beyti. Yeah we know it’s a big order, but it’s the kind of food you happily takeaway and eat the next day. Or as soon as you get home. They have other branches in Finchley, Walthamstow, and Chingford.
 Beit El Zaytoun £ £ £ £ Middle Eastern ,  Lebanese ££££ 15 Barretts Green Rd
Halal status: All meat is halal
All-day restaurant Beit El Zaytoun is making some seriously good Middle Eastern food. It’s a great place to enjoy a relaxed Lebanese brunch in their semi-outdoor area, with meat and cheese manakeesh, halloumi, and zait w zaatar all on the menu. It also stays open till late when you can get shawarmas and wrap platters.
 P. F. Chang's £ £ £ £ Chinese  in  Covent Garden ££££ 10 Great Newport Street
Halal status: All meat is halal
The mongolian beef at this Chinese spot, the London outpost of a worldwide chain, is more than enough reason to make that trip to Leicester Square. Those slices of tender beef in a sweet soy glaze, the dynamite shrimp, and the honey chicken should all be on your order. It’s a great spot for a halal Chinese feast.
 Coya London £ £ £ £ Peruvian  in  Mayfair ££££ 118 Piccadilly
Halal status: Wagyu Beef
If Coya was a person it would be the beautiful, popular friend of a friend who’s annoyingly nice and intimidatingly cool. Basically as a person, we’d probably find them depressing to be around. But as a restaurant we love them. This spot has some of the best guacamole we’ve tried in London, as well as some mind-blowingly good crab tacos, and some very good wagyu sliders. Plus the OTT interior makes it perfect for a celebratory meal.
Red Iron Burgers £ £ £ £ American ,  Burgers ££££ 280 High St
Halal status: All meat is halal
As far as we’re concerned, burger options are always welcome, and this diner has one of the best halal burgers in London. It’s meat heavy, and the layers of cheese, the red iron burger sauce, crispy onions, and jalapenos make it an all-rounder. And to top it all off, it comes with thick-cut chips for £11.95.
 Sadaf Restaurant £ £ £ £ Iranian ,  Persian  in  Kensington ££££ 3-5 Campden Hill Rd
Halal status: All meat is halal
There’s quite a lot of choice when it comes to Persian restaurants in London, with a large proportion of them being halal. But Sadaf is one of our favourites. This airy spot just off High Street Kensington serves some great lamb chops, addictive taftoon bread, and some of the juiciest koobideh around. The hefty portions mean you almost always end up getting some to takeaway - which is always a plus.

Thursday, 8 August 2019
To Hatton Wall for a haircut (341 bus to Mount Pleasant, then walked the rest of the way to the salon).
Afterwards, I walked to Holborn Circus to pay in a cheque at the bank, then continued down Shoe Lane towards Fleet Street. At one point I heard a man’s voice close behind me say, in an American accent, ‘Look at that Brutalist building!’ The Shoe Lane and Fetter Lane area has been hugely rebuilt of late, with construction still going on even now, so I wondered what he was referring to. It was the Shoe Lane Library, which stood out among the recent buildings. (Hill House, which contains the library, was built in 1975–79.) The speaker was a thin, wiry man in his sixties, wearing shorts and what I took to be walking shoes. A similarly dressed woman I presumed to be his wife stood back looking slightly ill at ease as he approached the library entrance, perhaps to read a sign. I carried on downhill and they eventually overtook me, not walking but very slowly jogging.
I hadn’t decided where to go next but noticed the American couple had crossed Fleet Street and gone down a side road, Salisbury Court, so I thought I would follow them. I soon reached Salisbury Square, where there were benches arranged around an obelisk of some sort. I sat down for a while. I quite liked the view of the obelisk, with random office workers standing about on smoking breaks, so I took a photo.
Tumblr media
From where I was sitting I could see a passageway on the other side of the square, and I had an idea the American couple might have jogged down it, although they were long gone by this time. Nevertheless, I thought I would have a look down the passage, which it turned out led to another paved area with benches. I sat down again, but soon got up as I didn’t much like the view of a nearby office block. As I retraced my steps I noticed there was a church on the other side of a wall. It looked interesting, so I approached it via another alleyway further up Salisbury Court.
I could have gone inside the church (St. Bride’s, a Wren church on a very old site, perhaps as early as the sixth century), but the benches outside were more tempting. The churchyard was shady and cool, and I sat there for a good twenty minutes, alternately watching the movement of the shadows of tree branches on the wall of an adjacent building and glancing around at other people, while half listening to a man at the next bench speaking on the phone.
At length I got up and made my way back to Fleet Street to wait for a bus to either Waterloo or Charing Cross station, where I could use the public toilets. A 341 came first, so I took it to Waterloo.
After using the toilet, I left the station via the footbridge that crosses York Road and leads to the South Bank. This took me past the ‘Upstream Building’, as it is called, a surviving portion (and the most prominent tower) of the Shell Centre, built between 1957 and 1962 but now largely demolished. Not long ago I watched a video on YouTube, made in 1964, in which the newly built Shell Centre is seen from a boat on the Thames. Now, gazing up at the 351-ft tower, in its day the tallest office building in London, I reflected on the passing of time. I don’t even like the building particularly, so it’s not as if I’m relieved it’s been preserved, but it’s striking how much of what was familiar in London has been or is in the process of being replaced.
Tumblr media

On a similar theme, I had already decided to take a 77 bus to Wandsworth Road to see what progress had been made in demolishing the building I used to work in.
Catching the 77 from Concert Hall Approach felt a bit strange as I hadn’t done it for nearly ten years. The feeling of going back in time persisted as the bus circled the IMAX cinema, took the familiar route along York Road, Lambeth Palace Road and Albert Embankment to Vauxhall Bus Station, then turned up Wandsworth Road. At Lansdowne Green I alighted and walked the short distance to Belmore Street. I had been here a couple of times in recent weeks, walking up from Stockwell station on evenings after visits to my mother. What I was interested in was seeing the old Vauxhall Centre of Lambeth College in different stages of demolition. Today, there was plenty of activity on the site, but what had remained of the building about a month before was still there, chopped off at one end, with a door on an upper floor opening on to empty space.
Tumblr media

Next, I walked further up Wandsworth Road to the Mind charity shop I often visited in my lunch hour when I worked at the college. I was surprised to see the same elderly woman working behind the counter. She seemed a bit older, but not that much considering I hadn’t been there for ten years. The shop itself had changed a lot: It sometimes used to have unusual old books for sale, but the books section was now reduced in size and had nothing of interest.
Tumblr media
Above: Mind shop, Wandsworth Road, 11 October 2008
Back on the street I waited for a 452 bus. I planned to spend the rest of the afternoon visiting Kensal Green Cemetery, which I hadn’t been to before.
By the time I got to Kensal Green, I was starving hungry. I was close to the East Gate of the cemetery but thought I would buy a sandwich before going inside. There were a few shops nearby but I couldn’t find any that sold sandwiches, so after a while I abandoned the idea of visiting the cemetery. Frustrated, I walked up the hill towards Kensal Rise. At first I was still hoping to find something to eat, but my hunger eventually began to fade and I thought I would just walk north-east, in the general direction of home.
The route, an unfamiliar one up Chamberlayne Road, then Sidmouth and Lydford Roads, was surprisingly light in traffic. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed the walk, as the weather was hot and stuffy, but it wasn’t too bad, and at least I was getting some exercise. (One point of interest on this stretch was a cricket ground hidden behind a wooden fence. Peeping through a gap in the fence, I saw that a game was in progress, and I watched a few balls before moving on.)
Having calmed down a bit, I began to feel frustrated again at the end of Skardu Road. Continuing north-east was impossible because of the rail tracks of the Midland Main Line out of St. Pancras, and to cross the railway I had to detour some way south along Fordwych Road before turning north-east again on Minster Road.
When I reached Menelik Road (named after Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia, with whom local landowner and explorer Major Percy Powell-Cotton had an audience in 1900), I made a mistake. I followed the road as it curved round, up a hill and down again, and after about ten minutes ended up back more or less where I started, at the junction with Westbere Road. The problem was another obstacle: Hampstead Cemetery. To avoid it, I should have turned instead into Sarre Road, where I could have reached Gondar Gardens by a footpath.
Tumblr media
Above: Gondar Gardens, West Hampstead, 1 February 2014 (I didn’t realise I’d been there before. In fact, had I taken the footpath from Sarre Road, I would have come out at almost this exact spot.)
I could then have skirted the cemetery and continued north-east towards Finchley Road and Hampstead Heath. Unaware of this possibility (I didn’t spot the very faint outline of the footpath on Google Maps), and by now feeling a bit weary, I gave up. Conveniently, there was a bus stop on Westbere Road and I caught a C11 to Archway, followed by a 41 to Turnpike Lane, then walked home via the Harringay Passage.
Tumblr media
It had been just another aimless day. I’d walked a total of 8.3 miles, as well as riding around on buses quite a bit, but overall it felt unsatisfying because nothing I’d seen or done really stood out.

The Best London Restaurants With Halal Options added to Google Docs
The Best London Restaurants With Halal Options
Eating halal means that you pretty much find yourself turning vegetarian when you’re eating out. And while most restaurants offer some excellent options for non-meat eaters, it doesn’t mean that watching someone else eat a burger while you’re eating another halloumi wrap hurts any less. Which is why we’ve made a list of some of the best London restaurants with halal options. From Lebanese bakeries to a Philly cheesesteak-specialising dive bar, you’ll be sure to find some top-quality halal food at any of these restaurants.
Sorry—looks like you screwed up that email address

Want to quickly find restaurants on the go? Download The Infatuation app.   the spots  Karolina Wiercigroch Berenjak £ £ £ £ Middle Eastern  in  Soho ££££ 27 Romilly Street
 Yasmina £ £ £ £ Lebanese ££££ 18 Western Avenue
 Passyunk Avenue £ £ £ £ American  in  Fitzrovia ££££ 80 Cleveland St
Halal status: Beef, chicken, and turkey are halal
Like flower walls and 19-year-olds on yachts, a Philly cheesesteak is something we’re mostly used to seeing on Instagram. Enter Passyunk Avenue, a Philadelphia-inspired spot and dive bar that you can experience in 3D. AKA real life. The Philly cheesesteak is made with shredded rib-eye steak and your choice of cheese in Italian hoagie bread.
Whether you’re after a long black, a peanut butter latte, a big frappe, or single-origin beans, use our guide to get your coffee fix at home.

They’re delivering fredo cappuccinos, frappes, and hot coffees too. You can also get a bag of their Loumidis Greek Coffee delivered at the same time.
Brew + Wild ££££ 134 West End Lane

Are you growing increasingly suspicious that 90% of modern ballads are actually written about someone who hasn’t had a flat white in two weeks? Us too. But some of London’s best coffee spots are still offering collection, delivery, or even sending ground coffee beans direct to you and your ‘ironic’ Britney Spears mug. Whether you’re after a long black, a peanut butter latte, a big frappe, or single-origin beans, use our guide to get your coffee fix at home.

54 Great Places To Drink Coffee In London (1) added to Google Docs
54 Great Places To Drink Coffee In London (1)
Coffee. Where would we be without it? Probably unemployed with a sleep pattern that echoes that of Batman’s. But as much as we’d like to personally thank coffee for all the assistance in those 7am alarms and 2am deadlines, we’re the first to admit that not all coffee - or coffee shops - are equal. For every latte that you’d happily refer to as the elixir of life is another that tastes like a coffee bean took a bath in some dirty rainwater. But this guide is full of places where you can rely on getting a great cup of coffee, as well as spots with excellent cold brew, and even the odd state of the art situation that’s worth travelling for.
central  Bar Italia £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery ,  Italian  in  Soho ££££ 22 Frith St
Bar Italia is a sliver of an espresso bar that’s just about as classic an establishment as anywhere else in London you could go for a cup of coffee. It’s expensive, and seating is limited, but you’ll feel like you’re part of something when you’re here, even if you’re only here for a few minutes. They’re also open till 5am most nights, so it’s perfect for a coffee after you’ve done pretty much everything else Soho has to offer.
 Tintico ££££ 57 Greek St
Tintico is one of those coffee shops that, if you catch up them on the right day (or wrong, depending on your personality) will talk to you. About coffee. About froth. About whatever you want really. It’s just a friendly place. It’s also probably the best place to stop in and get some work done or just have a breather in Soho. There isn’t a tonne of space, nor are the seats made for hours of sitting, so it’s a perfect grab and go or 20 minute type place.
 Prufrock Coffee £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Farringdon ,  Holborn ££££ 23-25 Leather Ln
Prufrock isn’t one of our coffee go-tos because their mascot is a tiny, freakishly adorable lop-eared rabbit. No. It’s because Prufrock’s mascot is a tiny, freakishly adorable rabbit and because they serve some of the best coffee in town. One of London’s OG serious coffee spots, this place is pretty permanently busy, but given its size and great service, you shouldn’t have to wait for long.
Fare Bar and Canteen £ £ £ £ Pizza ,  Modern European  in  Clerkenwell ,  Farringdon ££££ 11 Old Street
Fare is a casual walk-in spot that does wine by night, pizza by day, and serves as a coffee shop at all times in between. There are high tables, low tables, and a patio out back, and you should know that their coffee is some of the best in the neighbourhood. They also serve pastries and sandwiches.
Fleet Kitchen £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Bloomsbury ££££ 7-11 Upper Woburn Place
At Fleet Kitchen in Bloomsbury you’ll find a blackboard full of lunch specials, hobnob cookies, and the kind of lowkey, welcoming atmosphere you’d usually associate with an East End caff. Basically, it’s a bit old school in the best possible way. The coffee here is great and it’s the perfect option if you’re kind of over your morning flat white being accompanied by The XX’s greatest hits.
Kiss The Hippo ££££ 51 Margaret Street
This clean and tidy Fitzrovia spot is perfectly located for when you need to escape the crowds on Oxford Street. The coffees - brewed from beans roasted at Kiss The Hippo’s other branch in Richmond - are uniformly excellent, with a special shout out to their pour over options.
 Omotesando Koffee £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Fitzrovia ££££ Rathbone Sq Not
Rated
Yet
Omotesando Koffee started out as a one-man boutique coffee shop but they now have locations in Singapore, Kyoto, across Southeast Asia, and importantly, in Fitzrovia. Decked out in contemporary Japanese pine architecture, grabbing a coffee here feels both relaxing and achingly cool. They have an extensive selection of single origin beans, cold brew options, plenty of matcha on the menu, and their iced cappuccino with bubble milk foam is one of London’s best iced coffees. Heads up, you’re also going to want to get involved in their kashi, a stupidly tasty custard-based snack.
 Kaffeine £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Fitzrovia ££££ 66 Great Titchfield St
Kaffeine is a popular Australian cafe near Oxford Circus that’s perfect for a coffee to go if you’re in the area. It’s pretty much always mobbed so if you want to sit down you might be in for a wait, but once you get one make sure you also get a slice of banana bread.
 Flat White £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Soho ££££ 17 Berwick St
Flat White is a Berwick Street stalwart and one of London’s original specialist coffee shops. It’s always friendly, it’s always busy, and it should definitely be your destination when you’re strolling around in this part of Soho.
 Hopper Coffee Shop £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Holborn ££££ 81b Roger St
Hopper is a tiny and friendly coffee shop off the Gray’s Inn Road in Bloomsbury that’s perfect for a grab and go when you’re in the area. Don’t expect to sit down, it’s not that kind of place, but they do sell soups and sandwiches to go, as well as the usual baked stuff.
 Rosslyn Coffee £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  City ££££ 78 Queen Victoria St
Rosslyn Coffee on the corner of Queen Victoria Street in the City isn’t somewhere you’re going to want to linger for long. It’s the kind of place you’re going to stand and drink while reading the financial pages that they pin to the walls every day. Yes, it might be cramped. And yes, they might play fairly awful four-on-the-floor music some of the time. But, they also serve the best coffee in the City.
north  Jolene £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery ,  Brunch  in  Hackney ,  Highbury ££££ 21 Newington Green 8.2 /10
Jolene is a charming all-day café and bakery on Newington Green that you kind of never want to leave. It’s spacious, comfortable, and light, meaning it’s perfect for a coffee date, breakfast, or even to camp out with your laptop and get some work done.
 Caffeinate N8 £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Harringay ££££ 140 Crouch Hill
North London’s Crouch End isn’t short of coffee shops, but this is our pick of the bunch. It keeps long hours, the coffee is always great, and while the bench seats at the front are perfect for when you’re just stopping in for a quick coffee and pastry, or to read for a while, the glasshouse area at the back has plenty of space and is far more comfortable when you want to spread out.
 Caravan King's Cross £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Kings Cross ££££ Granary Building, 1 Granary Sq Not
Rated
Yet
Caravan is a restaurant, bar and coffee roastery at Granary Square in King’s Cross serving some pretty good coffee in an enormous space. Not only do they have extensive restaurant seating, but there’s a huge area at the back reserved for coffee drinkers and laptop workers. As well as serving food all-day, you should know that it also stays open until 10.30pm everyday except Sunday, so it’s ideal for a post-dinner coffee.
Loft Coffee £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Finchley Road ££££ 4 Canfield Gardens
Loft Coffee is 30 seconds away from the platforms at Finchley Road tube station, which only goes part of the way to explaining why they have a constant flow of customers. The other reasons are that it’s comfortable, the coffee is great, and whenever you’re here, you’ll be wondering whether you should stick around a little bit longer and get one of their excellent scrambled egg and bacon brioche buns.
 Greenberry Cafe £ £ £ £ Modern European ,  Cafe/Bakery  in  Primrose Hill ££££ 101 Regents Park Rd 7.9 /10
Greenberry Café is the Primrose Hill spot we’d eat in all the time if we lived in one of those pastel-coloured houses the neighbourhood’s famous for, but it’s equally a good place to come for a coffee after a walk in the park.
Le Café Alain Ducasse £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Kings Cross ££££ Unit 16 Coal Drops Yard
If you think you’re serious about coffee because you once had a proper cup of Nespresso, then prepare yourself. Because this place in Coal Drops Yard is on another level when it comes to state-of-the-art machinery, expensive coffee tasting, and various brewing methods. Given the meticulous - and at times, mildly hilarious - way this coffee is made (and then served to you like it’s the elixir of life), this spot is much more suited to a sit-down situation where you can watch the ‘cafelier’ practice their ‘coffeenomy’ and yes, enjoy their arguably excellent coffee. Expect big prices.
 Pophams £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Islington ££££ 19 Prebend St
Pophams is either an Islington coffee spot that bakes in house, or an Islington bakery that also serves coffee. Whichever way you want to put it, their coffee is excellent and their baked stuff even better. It’s on a quiet corner off the Essex Road, and has a tidy little terrace out front, so it’s a great place to head for if you’re trying to impress someone with your good taste and decent knowledge of London’s backstreets.
 Esters £ £ £ £ British  in  Stoke Newington ££££ 55 Kynaston Rd 8.4 /10
Esters is a great spot for coffee in Stoke Newington as long as you don’t go on a weekend between 11am and 1pm, because you’ll probably join the back of a 15 minute queue for one of their innovative brunches.
 But First Coffee £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Harringay ,  Stroud Green ££££ 43 Quernmore Rd
Don’t mistake this tiny coffee shop next to Harringay railway station for a commuter stop. Sure, you can grab a takeaway cup for the ride from this leafy north London hilltop to the City, but you’d be missing out. What you should really do is squeeze in around the single triangular table and get involved with a different side of London, one where strangers become friends over good coffee and excellent toasted crumpet sandwiches.
east  Giulia Verdinelli Lanark Coffee ££££ 262 Hackney Rd
Lanark is an adult shoebox-sized coffee shop on the Hackney Road doing two very nice things. The first is its toasties: soggy, crispy, ruin-your-favourite-white-t-shirt things, filled with cheese and kimchi and other things you want to carelessly stuff into your mouth. The second, is that it talks to people. Everyone in here chats. Not just “hey, how are you” but actually, like, talks. In London. Bizarre, we know. Anyway, come for the toasties and coffee, and stay for the chat.
 Allpress Espresso Roastery & Cafe £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Dalston ££££ 55 Dalston Ln
You can get Allpress coffee from countless spots around London, but their two-storey Dalston Lane coffee shop and restaurant is the mothership. Not only is there a coffee lab where you can learn all kinds of nerdy things, they also have a spacious and secluded patio which is perfect for when the sun is shining.
 Climpson & Sons £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Hackney ££££ 67 Broadway Market
Climpson and Sons is a busy coffee shop on Broadway Market that’s pretty much always busy. At weekends it’s almost impossible. It’s worth it though. The coffee is some of the best in town and you’ll be the envy of east London if you can actually nab a seat. Know that if you can’t face the queue, they also have a stall down the street where the wait might be shorter.
 % Arabica £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Hackney ££££ 33 Broadway Market
What % Arabica lacks in seats, it makes up for in style. This Kyoto-import on Broadway Market serves excellent espresso based drinks, as well as pour over. It also offers a pretty good party trick in which you pick a bean and they’ll roast a bag of it in your preferred style while you wait.
 Ozone Coffee Roasters £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Shoreditch ££££ 11 Leonard St 7.8 /10
Ozone is mostly known for its coffee, and rightly so - they make some of the best in London. You might not know that their enormous Shoreditch spot serves some pretty great food from early till late making it as good for a quick coffee stop as it is for a bit of solo working, a working breakfast or a quick evening bite.
Ozone Coffee Roasters £ £ £ £ Pizza ,  Brunch  in  Bethnal Green ££££ Emma Street Not
Rated
Yet
Just like at their original Shoreditch spot, Ozone Bethnal Green serves great coffee and an all-day breakfast. It’s bright and fresh and has about eight menu sections meaning it’s perfect for all times of day, and all tastes.
 Allpress Espresso Bar £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Shoreditch ££££ 58 Redchurch St
Follow the trail of shoppers and locals grasping coffee cups on Redchurch Street and you’ll end up at Allpress Espresso Bar. It’s one of the original and best Kiwi coffee shops in Shoreditch, has a minimal and cool feel, and even serves a bit of food, like toasted sandwiches and eggs and soldiers.
 Pophams Hackney £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Hackney ££££ 197 Richmond Road 8.2 /10
Pophams Hackney is a warehouse-like café and bakery in, wait for it, Hackney. It’s the kind of place you pop in for a simple coffee and pastry and then, come the evening, you start eyeing up their evening menu and consider swapping out your bacon and maple for fresh pasta and wine.
 Climpson & Sons Spitalfields £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Spitalfields ££££ Pod 3, Old Spitalfields Market
We’re not going to lie to you. We have a pretty serious crush on Climpson’s nitro coffee. Their industrial-looking kiosk at Old Spitalfields Market is just as serious about their coffee as their cafe on Broadway Market, so expect a carefully curated drinks menu, excellent espresso, and seasonal single origin filter coffee. By the way, there’s also espresso martini and coffee beer on tap.
 Snackbar £ £ £ £ Japanese ,  Sandwiches ,  Brunch  in  Dalston ££££ 20 Dalston Lane 8.0 /10
This Asian-influenced café on Dalston Lane has a colourful aesthetic and a Horrors-filled soundtrack. It’s perfect for a coffee and a snack with a friend, or for a coffee while doing some work and also deciding that you’d be enjoying your work a whole lot more if you were eating kaya toast soldiers and an onsen egg.
south  Brickwood Coffee & Bread ££££ 16 Clapham Common South Side
Brickwood is a cosy coffee shop opposite Clapham Common tube station that’s excellent for pitching up in for a few hours, if need be. During the week it feels like a (non-overwhelming) working space, thanks to the cheery table service and the different people doing different things dipping in and out. Though upstairs is a little competitive, there’s always down if natural light isn’t your thing. Coffee-wise it’s pretty good, and there’s a load of freshly baked bread and pastries, as well as a brunch-ish menu too.
 Jocelyn Low Monmouth Coffee The Borough £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  London Bridge ££££ 2 Park Street, London SE1 9AB, Southwark
Monmouth Borough Market is a popular coffee shop in Borough. It’s the perfect place around the market for coffee and a light bite. Arrive here in the morning or mid-afternoon if you want to avoid the peak times queues.
 Giulia Verdinelli Kapihan £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Battersea ££££ 13A Parkgate Rd
This Battersea sun trap serves the kind of coffee that it’s worth crossing London for. They do all the usual espresso drinks, as well as signatures like palawan honey latte, and barako coffee, a distinctive flavoured bean from the Philippines. Their pastries are also on point with options like the bibingka (a rice muffin baked and served in a banana leaf) and cassava cakes making a welcome change from croissants.
 Stir Coffee £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Brixton ££££ 111 Brixton Hill
Stir Coffee is a Brixton Hill spot that has both the cute factor in the form of a tiny black dog that sleeps under one of their rustic bookshelves, and what we like to define as the catch-up factor. Basically, it’s a great place to hit up for a casual chat with a mate, getting some work done, or simply grabbing a drink on the move.
 The Black Lab Coffee House £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Clapham ££££ 18 Clapham Common Southside
Lab is short for labrador, but it’s also short for laboratory. So, it’s no surprise that Black Lab is the kind of coffee shop that serves stuff out of beakers and whatnot. Chemistry groupie-ing aside, this spot in Clapham is a very relaxed and comfortable choice if you want to hang out and catch up with some friends out front, upstairs, or downstairs.
 The Black Cab Coffee Co £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Battersea ££££ 1 Riverlight Quay
Black Cab Coffee Co is an ultra-modern feeling coffee shop in the rapidly changing development at Nine Elms. It’s a comfortable and airy spot, and if you spend five minutes there you’ll probably see a dozen regulars pop in and out for their coffee. If you spend longer you should dive into their all-day breakfast menu. The eggs benedict is particularly good.
 Coleman Coffee Roasters £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Waterloo ££££ 20 Lower Marsh
Coleman Coffee Roasters near Waterloo is that perfect-looking coffee shop that you might accidentally get talking to a stranger in. You’ll become firm friends over your shared love of terrazzo, smooth espresso, and Vichy Catalan sparkling water. You might also share something from their selection of pastries, sweet things, and snacks. Warning: if you’re planning this kind of scenario you should know that they close at 3pm.
 Flotsam & Jetsam £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Wandsworth ££££ 4 Bellevue Parade
Flotsam and Jetsam is a cute neighbourhood café on Wandsworth Common that gets pretty busy, so if you’re rolling with a gang you might not find space. Inside there’s an airy feel, but our choice when the sun is shining is to grab one of their bench seats out front.
 Old Spike Roastery £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Peckham ££££ 54 Peckham Rye
Old Spike is part roastery, part coffee shop, and part social enterprise, working to train and offer meaningful employment to homeless people. It’s also the best place in Peckham for coffee. It’s a bit out of the way, but it’s perfect if you’re on your way up to Peckham Rye, or either before or after you’ve eaten at Mr Bao across the road.
 Giulia Verdinelli Scooter Caffè £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Waterloo ££££ 132 Lower Marsh
When you’ve had your fill of icily distant baristas, latte art, and the kind of tastefully bland music that soundtracks most London coffee shops, Scooter Caffè near Waterloo is the place for you. This converted motorcycle garage is dusty and distressed, and is filled with old Italian posters, many of which feature nuns riding scooters, obviously. It plays excellent music - mostly from the 1950s, has a cute little patio, serves pretty good coffee and is open late into the night when it takes on more of a dive bar feel.
 Daily Goods £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Camberwell ££££ 36 Camberwell Church St
Okay, aliens invade the planet. Which daily goods do you make a beeline for? Yes, these are the kind of things that keep us up at night. But the answer is obviously coffee, so it makes sense that we’re into this classic, trendy coffee spot on Camberwell’s Church Street. Expect exposed light bulbs, plenty of equally trendy freelancers, and coffee that’s on the Jason Statham spectrum of strong.
 F. Mondays £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Brixton ££££ 112a Brixton Hill
We’re entirely on board with the sentiment of F. Mondays and we’re entirely on board with this Brixton spot’s coffee too. Cool and casual, this place has a pretty impressive collection of miniature cacti inside, but our favourite thing about this place is out back: their cute hidden garden.
 Lumberjack £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Camberwell ££££ 70 Camberwell Church Street
Fun fact: iconic 2013 hit Timber by Pitbull and Kesha was actually inspired entirely by this Camberwell neighbourhood cafe. Okay, it wasn’t. We made that up. But given the amount of timber here, it absolutely should have been. As well as having local artists work for sale on the walls and generally being charming as fuck, this place also does some great light bites. Although it can fill up during peak hours, there’s plenty of extra space downstairs.
 The Watch House £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Bermondsey ££££ 199 Bermondsey St
What The Watch House in Bermondsey lacks in size it makes up for in character. In fact, if it isn’t London’s most charismatic coffee spot then we have no idea what is. It has a roaring fire, great sandwiches and pastries, an excellent espresso bar, and - as its name suggests - is housed in a converted 19th century guard’s shelter on the edge of a graveyard. It’s also open till 6pm which is a good two hours later than most cafés we know.
west  Dark Habit £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Kilburn ££££ 72A Salusbury Road
Dark Habit is a stylish and calm coffee shop in Queens Park. Seating is limited and it can get quite busy during peak times, but for most of the day you’ll easily find space at one of their larger tables, or at the window. It’s the perfect place to spend a few hours, partly because of the great quality coffee, and partly because of the excellent soundtrack.
 Formative £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Victoria ££££ 4 Butler Pl
Quality coffee options around Westminster are fairly limited, but Formative is a slick spot in the base of a new build at the station end of Victoria Street and it’s perfect for when you’re in the area and want a proper cup of something. It’s also a pretty good spot if you’ve got a bit of work to do.
 Antipode £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Hammersmith ££££ 28 Fulham Palace Rd
This spacious but slightly scruffy sliver of a coffee spot is in the shadow of the Hammersmith flyover. As well as serving excellent coffee and an all-day menu, it also stays open late when there’s a gig at the Hammersmith Apollo around the corner.
 Lowry & Baker £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Notting Hill ££££ 339 Portobello Rd.
Lowry and Baker is a homely little café in Portobello Road that serves breakfast and brunch on some cute vintage-type crockery, along with cakes and other sweet things. It’s a casual neighbourhood spot, so if you’re just getting coffee at the weekend, know that it’s going to be busy and you’ll probably have settle for a takeaway situation. If you want to sit down, go during the week.
 Vardo £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery ,  Brunch  in  Chelsea ££££ 9 Duke Of York Square Not
Rated
Yet
Vardo is a striking and spacious spot in Chelsea with huge windows facing directly onto the King’s Road. It’s as perfect for a coffee date as it is for a solo drink and some people watching, and if you’re in the mood for something warm and comforting, and you’re a fan of cinnamon, try their golden spiced milk. If you want to say for hours you can do that too, because it’s also an all-day restaurant.
 Greenspeares £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Chelsea ££££ 23 Walton Street Not
Rated
Yet
Greenspeares is the lazy kind of residential cafe that feels immune to one espresso squatters and plug point politics. It’s a ten minute stroll from Knightsbridge tube and, if you’re looking to peacefully set up shop for a few hours, or for a catch-up in their loung-like downstairs, then this is the place. The coffee’s decent and there are a load of salad-y options and freshly baked cakes too.
Barino £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Shepherds Bush ££££ Ariel Way
If you’ve ever been craving a great cup of coffee (and perhaps some peace and quiet) while in Westfield White City, you should know that no such thing exists. You can get a great cup of coffee at Barino though. It’s outside John Lewis and provides about as quiet a corner as you’ll find in this vortex of commerce. Don’t expect peace, but you should know that their small selection of pastries will keep you sane until you find some.
 Granger & Co Notting Hill £ £ £ £ Australian ,  Cafe/Bakery  in  Notting Hill ££££ 175 Westbourne Grove 7.6 /10
Granger and Co is an Australian all-day restaurant in Notting Hill. They serve food, but it’s a great spot for a coffee date or breakfast. They have a walk-in policy so if you go at peak-times you might have to wait little bit. Little may or may not be an understatement.
 Hjem £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Kensington ££££ 3 Launceston Place
The area around High Street Kensington is a bit chain-y, so it’s worth taking a ten minute walk down to Hjem if you’re after a seriously good cup of coffee. This Danish café at Launceston Place is in one the prettiest corners of London and it doesn’t let the corner down. There’s a bench for two out front, but it’s also worth knowing that there’s a tiny and kind of secret patio out back.
 Swallow Coffee Shop £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Hammersmith ,  Shepherds Bush ££££ 75 Goldhawk Road
If you like Farrow and Ball paint shades and a bit of foliage with your coffee, then Swallow next to Goldhawk Road station has got you covered. This is a bright and spacious corner spot with lots of seating and a selection of sandwiches made to order from 9:30 every day. They also serve beer and wine from noon, which is our idea of a really good coffee shop.

54 Great Places To Drink Coffee In London added to Google Docs
54 Great Places To Drink Coffee In London

Vardo is a striking and spacious spot in Chelsea with huge windows facing directly onto the King’s Road. It’s as perfect for a coffee date as it is for a solo drink and some people watching, and if you’re in the mood for something warm and comforting, and you’re a fan of cinnamon, try their golden spiced milk. If you want to say for hours you can do that too, because it’s also an all-day restaurant.
 Greenspeares £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Chelsea ££££ 23 Walton Street Not
