glad you asked! i... didn’t like the anime. i feel like i’m the minority in that. i didn’t like how they look - hell, i once pointed out that jin doesn’t even look like jin. and it’s not because of the anime style - because other official anime style arts have shown how you’re supposed to draw jin in anime style-

the one on the left from tag tournament, feels like jin. he’s not as baby faced, his eyes aren’t as large - he doesn’t have an excessive amount of bangs, nor are they covering his bushy eyebrows. (also his hair isn’t sticking UP as much) and he’s not smiling, his face is sharp and so is his expression. this feels like jin. the one in the anime... just doesn’t feel like jin to me. (and yes, the CONSTANT triangle IS so damn distracting)

buuut - i could go off as to why i don’t like the new netflix anime, and how it fucked up, or what i would’ve done to improve it. but i have made a few posts going into detail - so i’ll just link to those instead of repeating here.

my very long rant about the anime (very important)

heihachi telling us about the devil gene, and the murder of kazuya ruins any surprise or interest someone would have in the anime (very important)

He hadn't meant to be so bold or to hesitate after calling for the man's attention, for that matter, it probably just made it seem worse. And yet, he was still waiting. More or less hoping the guy's reaction was going to be a mild one.

But this was Kensei Muguruma. The gruffest man around this side of the eleventh division.

He honestly didn't want to bother him but there was a nagging question Shuhei couldn't keep from rattling around in his brain, probably since the time Kensei had made his return. It wasn't related to training or work though and the opportunity for idle chatter rarely seemed to come up.

"N-no! I'm not!" Renji stammered, refuting Kensei's question. Honestly, he himself wasn't sure of what these feelings were. He had come to truly respect and admire his captain, a far way from his initial hatred of the man.

But was he even allowed to have these feelings for the man? They were in two different worlds - he was positive that even if he did hold feelings for Byakuya, the other would never look at him that way.

So he'd deny and suppress these growing feelings before he truly got heartbroken.

Sparring/Fighting Things

The Gotei 13 was guided by strength. It was defined by strength. They were, without exaggeration or hyperbole, the mightiest military force in all the worlds. They had to be; their core duties were too important to settle for anything less. When failure meant the death of all things, weakness simply was not acceptable.

That was their reality. Not everyone liked it. Many refused to accept it, but it was the truth. Like any truth, it would not change simply to suit the preferences of those who doubted it. After all, the Central 46, perennially wrong in all that they did, were only tolerated because Yamamoto-the strongest of all Shinigami-supported them.

Of these beings, for whom strength so guided and defined, there stood the thirteen among them considered strongest of all. The Captains. The mightiest men, women, and otherwise of the mightiest fighting force in history. Simply attaining the position ensured that one would be remembered for all time as a legend within the Gotei 13's ranks.

Yet, to attain that level of power was to inevitably lose certain things in the process. For one, it made training against others who were not Captains a futile effort, unless the training was purely for the other's benefit. What could one learn from a match that was impossible to lose, besides perhaps a way to blow off steam (certain past Captains had such habits; Unohana herself had never understood the appeal)?

As such, inter-Division sparring matches between Captains were not as uncommon as one might first assume. They were rarely very long, and weren't allowed to get too serious (lest a very grumpy old man give those involved a very long lecture), but they still happened. Unohana, however, was not usually one of the participants. While she was a Captain, and thus had to be strong by default, most simply assumed her strength stemmed from her kido acumen. This was, perhaps, an understandable assumption to make, but it still meant that the most sparring Unohana ever did was against those who were still learning things for the first time.

So when Kensei Muguruma approached her for a sparring match, Unohana found herself surprisingly touched. Even if he hadn't meant it as anything special, she appreciated the gesture; not many chose to acknowledge that the Zanpakuto she carried was more than mere decoration. She gave him a smile and said "Of course, Muguruma-taichou. I would be happy to participate."

A sabbatical? She has just assumed he has been very busy with his work. Or perhaps that was his sabbatical. More work but away from Soul Society. Either way, she knows she has to answer this. He is never going to let her squirm her way out of this-  only Shinji had been that soft on her.

She almost considered denying the whole, unpleasant affair but knew that denying things didn’t mean that they wouldn’t resurface later on. This is exactly what has kept causing her problems. The things that she can’t bear to face always come up in her heart and she hurts those closest to her. Because she takes it for granted that they will stay with her.

         He has been an absolute machine lately, clearing piles after piles of paperwork without pause at an unprecedented rate. His overall efficiency the last couple of weeks has increased so exponentially, that for once in a very long time, there is actually more going into his out tray than coming onto his in tray. His astonished lieutenant is constantly sticking her head out the window to check the sky, just to make sure that it isn’t in danger of falling on their heads or that they are about to face yet another life threatening invasion. There is no imminent danger, yet the entire Gobantai is somehow aware that there is something very wrong about their usually laidback captain-

          ...All because Shinji has been meticulously and calmly plowing through work. Non-stop. There are no other signs, but just this one alone is enough to be incredibly alarming. The man is a slacker who is known to do as little as possible, but when he buckles down, his efficiency easily outpaces even that of a certain uptight Captain of the Tenth, much to the initial delight, and then subsequent horror of his men. When Kensei arrived at the entrance of the office, seemingly like a heroic saint haloed in holy light to deliver unto them salvation, the harried-looking Seated Officers of the Gobantai gazed upon the silver-haired visored like he has just singlehandedly founded their new religion and reason for living-

          Shinji squints suspiciously as his old friend for a good while, one long, narrow hand still firmly grasping his brush, in the midst of penning a brisk approval for a mission request. It’s already past dusk, and standing by his side and slightly behind him in attendance, one of his officers has his hands clasped together in a desperate prayer directed at the Kyuubantai Taichous, as if wordlessly begging ‘Take him, please just take him already!!’ but Shinji does not seem to notice his subordinate’s antics. “ ...Hey. Since when are ya the type ‘ta invite people ‘ta go drinkin’, Kensei? ”

          He is not entirely dense or oblivious enough to fail at guessing the reason behind the other visored’s intentional visit, and for that concern, Shinji returns with candid sincerity, odd as it sounds. “ If yer here ‘coz of what’s goin' on between Hiyori and I, I ‘preciate it. We’re workin’ through some stuff. ” Despite the deliberate suppression, the tendrils of stress still creep through eventually, and his controlled mien wavers, finally revealing that he is not as serenely put together as one may think. He is worried, he is very worried. All the other soldiers still working in the office are dismissed for the night, before Shinji speaks, again.  

               “ I cannot see Hiyori now, but since yer free, why don’t ya look in on her in my stead? I said some pretty heavy things ‘ta her the other day... ” Trailing off, he thinks back to their last conversation. The truth has been harsh...but also necessary. They have been having problems in their relationship, because of her certain behaviors. He has given her all the time and support necessary to correct the issues, but they are not getting better. Something is not right...and try as he may, it’s not something that he can fix. At this rate, this marriage is heading straight for ruin, unless an intervention happens...or Hiyori figures out why she is always behaving in ways to savage the one she claims to love the most-

you've been hurt, badly, haven't you?

it's been a long time since you've felt comfortable in your own mind. everything's become a sign that you're going to be hurt again. so when something good does come along, you're not used to it. it feels foreign. it's weird and scary. you want to believe that it will work out, but you just can't. you've been burned too many times.

because of this, you've become cynical. you never wanted it to be this way, but you're trying to protect yourself. i see how it's easier to not accept the good, out of fear of its inevitable end. once the dust settles, you're terrified of being alone again.

but by doing this, you're never enjoying those good moments. you're letting them pass you by. you have to start letting the happiness come to you. even if it's in waves, isn't that better than not at all?

lol his mother’s name is pretty easy to remember once you realize it’s just jin but with a ‘u’ instead of an ‘i’! (her name is jun!) and it’s funny because jun is probs my fav tek girl. she’s beautiful, she’s kind, she’s similar to jin in ways. but i just... didn’t find myself loving her as much in the anime. i think because her design was too different (and boring) and i did... view her pacifism as too extreme as times. which would’ve been better had they explained maybe the reason she’s so strict is because she’s paranoid jin will end up like his father. but like... they never tell us or hinted at that. jun refuses to talk about jin’s father, but we never see if she ever actually loved kazuya at all to begin with or how they became a thing, or how she even really felt by his supposed death. the relationship of kazuya and jun just isn’t there. which, yes, it’s not really there in the games either. BUT. in the anime, we were promised we’d find out new things about jin’s backstory that we didn’t see in the games. and guess what? we didn’t. literally everything told in the anime, we already knew happened in the games - or at the very least, we can guess happened. the only “new” thing we got was that jin was bullied lol. which honestly, i didn’t care for the bully story. while yes, it could show jin had trouble controlling his temper... which btw, does a poor job at that - bc in the anime he even STATES they’ve been PHYSICALLY AND VERBALLY ABUSING HIM FOR LITERAL WEEKS - anyone would’ve snapped at that. aaaand jin goes through so much anyway, why add him being bullied on top of everything? if i were writing it, 

i would’ve made it that xiao was getting bullied, for being chinese. (therefore, would’ve acknowledged the elitism/racism that’s in japan) and xiao, being the optimistic and kind girl she is, is able to ignore this even if it does hurt. but jin, however, as we’ve seen in many other games and noncanon adaptations, cannot stand seeing xiao being hurt or disrespected - and that’s what causes him to lose his temper and start pounding on the bullies. perhaps this is why jun scolds him, because if xiao can refrain herself from violence, then so can jin. but of course, jin makes it a point - why should xiao be subjected to such when she can fight back? they obviously deserve it. that’s when jun will snap at jin, perhaps saying something like “i don’t want to see you become your father!” and then everything goes silent. maybe they’ll go into a talk later on where they can come to an understanding. jun doesn’t tell jin that kaz was influenced by a literal demon, but just that his anger and hatred led to him becoming a horrible person that eventually led to his death.

lots of fans, sadly, thought the anime was an IMPROVEMENT for jin. which made me feel they didn’t really understand jin’s character in the first place. i know stoic anime character is a trope, too. but with the way jin was just gasping at everything and being very expressive - just made him feel more like Generic Anime Protagonist, made him feel more like a shell the viewer can easily insert himself into the main character. i think jin’s lack of expressions or antisocial behavior can be relatable - there are people who struggle with this. hell, even i myself struggle with interacting with ppl. not only that, but jin is a highly traumatized individual. who, after his mother’s death, was forced to live with his grandfather - who was very strict, and had pretty abusive training. given how heihachi killed jin in the end, he clearly couldn’t stand having any small talk with jin. so - it makes sense as to why jin would be antisocial in the first place. also, i just like to think of jin as a weird little guy - it makes him more interesting than a sociable protagonist imo - at least, for jin, because that’s what his character is supposed to be - a flawed hero. not just because he struggles with anger, but he struggles with making the right choice, and he struggles with emotion and socialization. also - him struggling with emotion makes sense later on because if he does feel too much, then that means his devil will take over, and cause a lot of issues for the world. therefore, perhaps, jin is conditioned to believe that “emotion = bad” because of the consequences it can have on his devil gene. so, jin being the stoic “-.-” is both badass, and actually makes a lot of sense lore wise, too.
