Fifteen After Nine, 2020. 24x18in, acrylic and charcoal on heavy paper. The title Fifteen After Nine comes from the time on the clock as I worked on the painting. 2 days in a row when I looked at the time, it happened to be 9:15. I didn’t think much of it until I noticed the horizontal could be seen as hands on a clock in the 9:15 position. In my younger days I played drums in punk rock bands. The memories of setting up our equipment in a dive bar on a Wednesday night, playing our hearts out in a loud, sweaty set of songs to 10 people, then going home to get up for work the next morning are some I will never forget. The bands I played in never really had much success, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. I’m not a musician anymore, through my art however, I still connect with music on a profound level. I’ve been so happy about art galleries beginning to open to the public again that I’ve been pulling paintings out of storage and taking new photographs. This one is called “Ante Meridiem” It’s 20x20” acrylic on stretched canvas. Title comes from the painting sessions which were mostly early in the morning. “Ante Meridiem” quickly became a favorite of mine for several reasons . With its peculiar color combinations, off balance presentation, and dark facade, it challenges the perception of beauty. During the creative process, I keep myself open to subconscious influence. Not only for the color and style of the work, but also random words or phrases that will suddenly pop up.
