Hakim's Odyssey. Book 3: From Macedonia to France
Tumblr media

REVIEW: Zooey Celeste explores sonic and mortal transition on debut full-length, Restless Thoughts
Tumblr media
by Shea Roney
Reaching through the haze and darkly obscene adventure that is Restless Thoughts, stands Zooey Celeste. As an embodiment of the creator’s alter-ego, the astral shaman known as Zooey Celeste is here to lead the newly departed to whatever lies beyond this enchanting world he has created. With this debut full-length, coming from a novel that he is writing simultaneously alongside the songs, Zooey teams up with producer and friend Nick Hakim (Lil Yachty, Lianne La Havas) to excavate this physical world into the multitudes of strange outer places.
The album begins its pilgrimage with “Effortless”, an ethereal tune that stands apart from Zooey’s nostalgic voice and the wistfulness of the backdrop. With swooning lines like, “From way up in the heavens / To the underground / I thought I saw you screaming / With Your voice unfound,” “Effortless” sets the stage for a unique and unrestrained journey. The world's first introduction to Zooey Celeste’s Restless Thoughts was through the debut and title-tracked single that follows the opener. What begins as a subtlety of avant-punk drum tracks and lo-fi guitar drones, becomes a dark comprehension of eternal conflict. As Zooey sings, “Why can't we just live alone / And why can't we just get along gently,” the track takes a dark turn to self destruction. With Zooey’s hypnotic, baritone voice, there is a degree of pleading that is beautifully portrayed and heavily felt.
There is of course darkness that lies within this odyssey that we learn only Zooey can help us comprehend. “Running All Night,” driven by beautiful chord voicings and minor intonations, is a sinister lo-fi track that shines in its simplicity. “Torture Me” is a melodic diddy that is light in rhythm and melody, but weighed down by the unsubtle torment. “Walk By,” an industrial chamber-pop song, is determined to guide us to our next storyline destination. With the hauntingly cathartic chorus of, “Walk beside me,” otherworldly elements come into vision. With a strange yet established folky backdrop, “God Awful” is a poppy exchange of honesty for acceptance. With steady guitar chunks and clappy drum beats, the track acts as the bridge between humanistic faults and the purity of the great beyond.
One of the emotional highpoints of the album comes from the track “Cosmic Being.” Having had it as a voice memo for years, Hakim has turned it into a deliberate song of heartbreak and promises. With a rich piano track drenched in lo-fi guitar and drums, Zooey’s vocals reach a height of desperation. “Comeback”, a track dedicated to love, finds textures in lo-fi arrangements and saxophone squeals. “Big Trouble,” accompanied by friend Tei Shi, is a track of funked up basslines and ethereal composure that allows space for the vocal features. Just as this futuristic dance track drops off, it returns with a fortified groove to parade out the remaining instrumental characters.
The album comes to a cinematic conclusion with “Stay Up.” One of the most sonically sparse tracks on the record, “Stay Up” is composed of heavy,  staccato string arrangements and raw vocal tracks. Without dropping the poppy melodies, Zooey finds comfort in getting a second chance despite all of his internal dilemmas. As the album comes to a close, we reach the end of our journey with a collage of sounds as Zooey disappears from our earthly senses.
Restless Thoughts drops tomorrow, Friday, November 10. For now, you can stream "Big Trouble" wherever you listen to music, and be sure to follow Zooey Celeste to get to know more about the album and stay updated on his live performances.

Hakim’s Odyssey. Book 2: From Turkey to Greece
Tumblr media
La segunda parte de la odisea de Hakim es la que más apropiadamente se merece esa denominación. A diferencia de la primera parte, que se centra más en el contexto, la represión siria y el exilio, este volumen se centra en la pura huida, llena de precariedad y situaciones límite.

Oscars, Solar Orbiter & Mythic Quest
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone, we hope at the least you had a good evening snuggling up with your favourite movie.
Starting off this week, DJ tells us about the results of the latest Celebrity Worship Awards. Who won? Which actor is deserving of our endless praise? Buck and Professor are sceptical, but DJ jumps right in to tell us all about the Oscars.
Buck wants to leave the planet to escape the Oscars, so he’s been looking into the newest Solar Orbiter. This probe will be looking at the Sun’s poles. Maybe the weather is better away from the equator?
Professor has been binge watching Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, the new television show from Ubisoft, Apple TV, and the team behind It’s Always Sunny. Professor might be geeking out a little about having the burdens and struggles of being a game developer shown on TV.
The Nerds talk about their games of the week, then finally we have the Shout outs, Remembrances, Birthdays and Events of Interest.  This week we’re recommending Epigraphy, a poetry podcast Buck hopes to take a shot at. Check back soon to find out if he can poet as well as he can podcast.

France’s Directorate General of Competition, Consumption and Repression of Fraud (DGCCRF) found the lack of transparency displayed by Apple in the past breached its guidelines. The company was fined €25 million ($A41 million). Apple also “committed the crime of deceptive commercial practice by omission”. The consumer electronics giant is worth almost two trillion dollars, so the $41 million fine is unlikely to be felt too heavily. The fine is around 0.002 per cent of the company’s worth. If you were given a similar fine, it would only cost you about $20.

Events of Interest
10 February 1940 – Puss gets the boot : The first Tom and Jerry Cartoon .- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puss_Gets_the_Boot
It was directed by William Hanna,Joseph Barbera and Rudolf Ising, and produced by Rudolf Ising and Fred Quimby. As was the practice of MGM shorts at the time, only Rudolf Ising is credited. The short, Puss Gets the Boot, featured a cat named Jasper and an unnamed mouse, named Jinx in pre-production, and an African American housemaid named Mammy Two Shoes. Leonard Maltin described it as "very new and special [...] that was to change the course of MGM cartoon production" and established the successful Tom and Jerry formula of comical cat and mouse chases with slapstick gags. Matters changed, however, when Texas businesswoman Bessa Short sent a letter to MGM asking whether more cat and mouse shorts would be produced, which helped convince management to commission a series. A studio contest held to rename both characters was won by animator John Carr, who suggested Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse after the Christmas time drink. Carr was awarded a first-place prize of $50.
10 February 1957 – Attack Of The Crab Monsters clawed its way to theatres. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_of_the_Crab_Monsters
On this day in 1957, Attack Of The Crab Monsters made audiences afraid to go back into the water.  The feature starred Richard Garland and Pamela Duncan, and here's the plot summary: "Scientists become trapped on a shrinking island with intelligent, murderous giant crabs.”  Attack of the Crab Monsters was Corman's most profitable production up to that time, which he attributed to the "wildness of the title," the construction of the storyline, the structuring of every scene for horror and suspense, and editing for pace. Corman has stated that the success of the film convinced him that horror and humor was an effective combination.
10 February 1972 – Ziggy Stardust makes his earthly debut - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/ziggy-stardust-makes-his-earthly-debut
The concert at London’s Toby Jug pub a relatively minor rocker named David Bowie became the spaceman Ziggy Stardust. “I’m going to be huge,” is what David Bowie told Melody Maker less than three weeks earlier and still six months prior to the release of the albumThe Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. “And it’s quite frightening in a way, because I know that when I reach my peak and it’s time for me to be brought down it will be with a bump.”  That last bit may have been a case of Bowie confusing his Ziggy persona with real life, but that was what put the act over in the first place. Any rock musician can put on a costume, but how many could have inhabited the identity of an androgynous Martian rock star come to Earth in its dying days so convincingly, so effortlessly.
10 February 1996 – World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov loses game to computer. - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/kasparov-loses-chess-game-to-computer
After three hours, world chess champion Garry Kasparov loses the first game of a six-game match against Deep Blue, an IBM computer capable of evaluating 200 million moves per second.  Man was ultimately victorious over machine, however, as Kasparov bested Deep Blue in the match with three wins and two ties and took home the $400,000 prize. An estimated 6 million people worldwide followed the action on the Internet. The February 1996 contest was significant in that it represented the first time a human and a computer had duked it out in a regulation, six-game match, in which each player had two hours to make 40 moves, two hours to finish the next 20 moves and then another 60 minutes to wrap up the game.

27 Celebrities You’ll Likely See Around Toronto During TIFF 2019
The Toronto International Film Festival is easily one of the best events to take place in the city. With countless A-list celebrities in attendance, extravagant after parties and, of course, the hottest new movie releases, it’s not hard to see why the annual event brings in 450,000 movie-goers each year. The 44th annual event is gearing up to welcome a huge amount of talent to Toronto – here’s who’s coming to town (and the films they’ll be here to promote) between September 5 and 15:
Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart and Keke Palmer
Lopez, Wu, Reinhart and Palmer will be in town promote their new film Hustlers. The film is based on a viral article that appeared in New York Magazine a few years ago and sees the four leading ladies star as savvy strippers who team up to rob their Wall Street clients.
Kristen Stewart
Twilight alumn Kristen Stewart will be in town to promote Seberg. Stewart stars as Jean Seberg, a new French wave icon who is targeted by the FBI due to her romantic and political involvement with civil rights activist Hakim Jamal. The ‘based on a true story’ film is coming to TIFF, following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Penelope Cruz
The Academy Award-winning actress is coming to town for Wasp Network, a film which follows the increasingly complex lives of five Cuban political prisoners in the 1990s. It also stars recent Golden Globe winner Edgar Ramirez.
Natalie Portman and Jon Hamm
Noah Hawley’s Lucy In the Sky is about an obsessive astronaut, portrayed by Portman, who begins to question everything upon her return to Earth. Her charming crewmate, Jon Hamm, only seems to confuse things further. We can’t wait to see these two on the red carpet together.
Kerry Washington
Scandal star Kerry Washington is jetting in for American Son. The movie is about an interracial couple that loses their 19-year-old son, and the police are the main suspects.
Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis and Toni Collette
Hollywood heavyweights Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, Toni Collette and Jamie Lee Curtis all star in Knives Out, a new take on a classic ‘whodunnit’ tale. The plot? A famed southern detective teams up with local police to investigate quirky suspects after the murder of a wealthy novelist.
Scarlett Johannson
Fan-favourite Scarlett Johannson is appearing in two films at TIFF this year. The first is Marriage Story, which looks at the journey of family life and marriage. The second is Jojo Rabbit, a comedic satire about the life of a young German boy who finds a Jewish girl hiding in his house.
Dev Patel and Tilda Swinton
Director Armando Iannucci serves up his own twist on the classic autobiographical novel by Charles Dickens in The Personal History of David Copperfield. Skins actor Dev Patel has the leading role of David Copperfield, whilst renowned actress Tilda Swinton is playing his aunt, Betsey Trotwood. The film will have its world premiere at TIFF.
Nicole Kidman, Sarah Paulson and Ansel Engort
Another stellar line-up of Hollywood talent is coming to town for The Goldfinch. Ansel Engort plays Theodore Decker, a grief stricken son who is sent into an odyssey of reinvention and redemption following the death of this mother. American Horror Story actress Sarah Paulson takes on the woman of the night role, while Kidman plays the socialite mother that takes in orphaned Theo.
Brie Larson, Jamie Foxx and Micheal B. Jordan
Just Mercy stars Jordan as Harvard-educated lawyer Bryan Stevenson, who pairs up with local justice advocate Eva Ansley (Larson) to defend Walter McMillian (Foxx) when he is found guilty of a crime he didn’t commit. This thought-provoking drama is set for its world premiere at TIFF.
Meryl Streep, Antonio Banderas and Gary Oldman
Streep fans, rejoice! The legend herself is slated to drop into town with Antonio Banderas and Gary Oldman to promote The Laundromat, a creative retelling of the infamous Panama Papers leak.
Robert De Niro and Joaquin Phoenix
These two Hollywood icons are cruising into YYZ for Todd Phillips’ take on the legendary Joker. Judging by the short clips shared of the film so far, it looks utterly terrifying – here’s hoping there’s no scary surprises on the red carpet.
