The Night Circus is one of the most elegantly and well written books i have read in the last few years. The characters are complex human (but i’m not 100% sure) beings, fighting against each others, fighting against life itself and the complications it carries. I am so glad i have read this story, set in one of my favorite period (late victorian era) and full of magic, thrills and mystery. At the end of every chapter, The Night Circus left my palate with the taste of the unknown and the will of discovery. Fate is unpredictable, they say. I’m not truly sure about that. I have always thought that we are the makers of our destiny, we have to work hard, to fight, to improve, to aspire for the best from ourselves. When i started this bookstagram account, i just wanted to get back to the two things (music excluded) that made me the happiest: photography and books. In the past few years i have focused myself too much on my career/work thing that i forgot to save time for myself, for the things i liked most and for discovery. Believe me, it was all wasted time. I would pay a million $$$ to get back and do the complete opposite. In this picture, i feel quiet, peaceful and i am connected to the surroundings. I am in the nature, i have a book in my hand. It took me a whole hour to shoot this photo, to take the right angle, to master the light, to understand what i wanted from this picture, i covered myself in mud (because yes, you always see the pretty picture, but most of the time i end up cover in mud and dirt, thorns bubbles from a soft grass allergy). Now i know that it doesn’t really matter how tired i’ll be at the end of the day, with my brain upside down from my ‘other’ life. When i take pictures or when i read, i am happy. I feel complete, i feel connected. Like every part of my brain is pushed to the limits and all the cells work together, synchronized. I am connected to my body, to nature. It’s a magical feeling. I am so glad i got that at 26 before it’s too late. Do one thing everyday that makes you happy. At least one, for your own sanity. This book photo'd is a A Gathering of Shadows, ok? You're still with me, yes? No, I am not on chapter 5 yet, I was only a little ways in. I just flipped open the page for the shot.🙊 || CiCi how did you like A Darker Shade of Magic?? Uuuummmm yea...about that 😱🙈 Didn't read it yet because I was reminded by my sweet friend @bookplanets that ADSoM is the FIRST book!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I have never cackled so hard in my life. I know what your're going to say....let's say it together. "Oh CiCi" • Reading to many books perhaps? Maybe? Did I panic because of spoilers? Nope!! I calmly put AGoS down and will start on ADSoM today and when Im finished with the first book I will continue with the second book where I left off!! No biggie!! 😄 But this also got me to thinking because my brain spirals into deep thought every second. • I am a sensitive person. I always have been and I used to NEVER EVER admit my blunders/mistakes. I was CONSUMED with what people thought to the point of tears 😢. I didn't want people thinking I was dumb or ditzy or stupid. I can assure you that consuming yourself with the thoughts of others is no way to live. It's like being in a prison inside of yourself. • Then one day I had an epiphany....I like that word!! In my journaling I asked myself a simple question and IF I could come up with a justifiable answer then my feelings were warranted. The question was "Can you list one person that you know that has never made a mistake?" I couldn't answer it. I asked myself this question everyday until it was drilled in my consciousness and therein lies your freedom. • Admit your mistakes, learn from them, correct, repeat, continue.The mishaps you face don't make you less than anyone else. It may help others, make someone see things differently, maybe even make them smile a little like this did!! • I am completely free because I know the mistakes I make are not the sum of who I am so for @writinglaraferrari here's my #gutsgloryglitter ❤

I’ve been MIA because I’ve been revising my manuscript for #dvpit which is in 21 days! If you saw my stories over the weekend, I finished my pass through. I’m doing some research for my revisions which is both good and stressful! . Hello to my new followers! I’m a reader, writer, and mom who also likes collecting pens, notebooks, washi tape, and Funko Pops. I’m currently revising my draft to get it ready for the Twitter event #dvpit—a pitch session for marginalized authors and/or characters for agents. What are you working on? . My current MS is a fantasy inspired by ancient Filipino culture and beliefs. My main character Vivian is a biracial warrior who discovers she is the heir to her island nation and a descendant of Maria of Makling Mountain. She has to decide whether or not she’s going to save her family from her father, the king, or save her island home from an angry diwata, the goddess Maria. . I wrote this story for my daughter. She’s biracial and I wanted her to have a book where she could see herself (hopefully she’ll like reading fantasy!) . I started writing because I wanted to read the stories that weren’t there, i.e. fan fiction. I was teaching and would come home and write stories for the books I loved, but wanted more—I wasn’t ready for the story to end, or I’d wonder what if the MC had made a different choice. Now I write in the hopes that readers who felt they were missing from books will have a chance to feel seen in my current WIP. . #aprillitwrit Why/When you started writing . How are you? You know what’s really hard? Writing. . I’m still in revisions. I’m still trying to get back into a schedule. I’m still learning how to prioritize writing again. I’m also not wasting energy on excuses or regrets. If I don’t meet my writing goal for the day, I acknowledge it and try better the next day. It’s not easy breaking the habit of being hard on one’s self for not meeting expectations, but I’m also so done with feeling sorry about my manuscript too. . “You can measure your worth by your dedication to your path, not by your successes and failures.” A Different Way from Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert . . . When I couldn’t focus on my manuscript or reading anymore, I thought I was failing and letting down a lot of people. I was also scared that my creativity left me. I had been writing and revising for seven months with few breaks and no self care. I couldn’t keep up the pace anymore and I worried that I had lost my motivation. It took a long time for me to recognize that my break wasn’t a failure. . Big Magic has found me at exactly the right time when I needed it. When you’re used to working, it’s hard not working especially when it’s a forced break. But I knew I needed it. I’m just so glad that this wasn’t a mark of failure and it’s actually part of what Gilbert calls creative living. . I hope you all don’t mind me going on about this book because I do plan on talking about it more! It’s so relatable and also helpful in navigating creative living. I had several people express interest in reading it from my previous post. I hope you all have a had a chance to pick it up. I also highly recommend the audio book which is narrated by the author— it feels like Elizabeth Gilbert is giving advice! . How’s your creative project going? Is there anything (besides reading) that absorbs your attention so much that when you look at the time, a lot of it has passed? . Obviously chores can be a time suck, but other things that are a time suck, but the fun kind—crafting (I got a sewing machine last year and I’m dying to get back to it) and watching Korean Dramas and/or anime are also ways I like to spend my free time too. . The other thing that I get completely caught up in is writing. Writing is definitely something I lose time and sleep over because once I’m in the story, it’s hard to stop. There have been times when my eyes would be tricksy and try to close, but my fingers would keep typing. Never in my dreams did I ever think I’d write a book and be on the cusp of sharing it with others. Writing wasn’t always easy for me, but I’ve worked so hard at it and it feels as if all the struggles and frustrations of my writing experiences are starting to pay off! . I don’t normally listen to music when I write, but since I’m revising, I’ve found that the music from these movies have been really inspiring. . I’ve been missing lately and will probably be in and out from now on because I’m deep in the revising trenches. I’m not where I had planned to be at this point before #dvpit, but I did finish my pass through of Act I of my story and my revising notes are strong. Are you a person who sticks to routines? Or do you just go with the flow? . For #marchlitwrit writing ritual, I am definitely a person who likes to have routines. When I was drafting, I devoted at least an hour a day to writing. I also had a couple of bullet journals going—one for daily progress entries of what I’d written that day and one where I’d also keep the goals for the month. The second one was used to plan out tasks. . Now that I’m revising my draft, I’ve found that my needs have changed so I’ve been spending lots of time figuring out what isn’t working and what I should continue. I finally had a break through the other night and I feel like I’m back on track. I plan to participate in #DvPit in April, so I need to make sure I finish revising my MS by then which means creating a revising schedule before the event. I’ll also be setting up another task bullet journal and a separate sectioned notebook for revision notes. . As this challenge progresses, I’ll also share more of my routines! . Whether you own a small business or you’re building your account, or in my case, writing a book, we all are inspired in some way to start but how do you keep going? . It’s been a while since I last shared my progress on my novel. The quick explanation: for the last two years I’ve been writing a fantasy inspired by ancient Filipino culture and I finished writing it last summer. I took a break and at the beginning of this year, I began the revision process so that I can start querying by summer. . I will be eternally grateful to Vanshika @thatreadingraven for bringing #dvpit to my attention. It’s an opportunity for marginalized authors and/stories to pitch their unpublished MS to editors and agents. And FRIENDS, I’M GOING TO PITCH MY STORY. . I’m putting this here to hold myself accountable, but also to keep me inspired. In my experience, when you open yourself to opportunities, they present themselves in different ways. . My original inspiration for writing this story is my daughter. I wanted her to have a story where an empowered biracial female was strong, clever, and valued her family. Then I read a book where a brown girl was fighting alone against a patriarchal society to save her brother against terrible odds. It was the first time for me seeing in print a brown girl as a main character with her own narrative. I knew then that Sabaa Tahir’s book was proof that brown girls had a place in fantasy stories (not just as a side character or in token roles), and there also could be a place for my story too. . A year ago I finished a creative writing program online through The Writer's Studio @twssfu at Simon Fraser University in Canada @cs_sfu. I had just started my journey as a writer and being accepted into the program was an exciting opportunity. I became part of a talented and creative group that our mentor June Hutton dubbed the Fictionistas. I also had the privilege of working with Eileen Cook, Claudia Cornwall, Fiona Tinwei Lam, and director Wayde Compton. They were all so generous and gracious sharing their experiences as published authors. . Now a year after finishing the program, I'm working on the end of my manuscript and getting ready to submit chapters to alpha readers to undergo the revision process. Once the revision process is complete, the second draft will go to beta readers and once the revision process is finished for that, I'll begin the query process. I hope to begin querying by fall/winter this year. Ambitious? Oh yes! August will be the two year anniversary since I started writing this story. I'm ready to finish this! .
