Things you should never pour down the drain

Coffee grounds

Coffee grounds like to stick together and form a clump in the pipes that can't be easily dislodged. So even a little coffee grounds a day can become a problem. Fortunately, coffee grounds can also be used in the home and are a good addition to the compost pile in the garden. It adds nitrogen, which helps break down plant material and increases soil performance.

Cooking fat and oils

Then, when it's poured down the drain, it clogs the pipes. Vegetable oils such as olive, corn and coconut oil, which don't solidify completely, also get stuck in the pipes and trap other food particles.

Allow animal fats to set and dispose of them in a waste container. Reuse oils whenever possible, or check with your municipality about recycling cooking oil.

Rice and grains

When you add water to rice or dry grains, they expand. If you pour them down the sink, they will do the same and clog the pipe. Put the grains in the compost pile or dispose of them in a trash can.

Eggshells

Eggshells take a long time to dissolve in water. And even if they are crushed in the trash can, the membranes can cause clogs. The best way to dispose of eggshells is to add them to the compost pile or throw them in the trash.

Paint

If you pour paint down the drain, your sink can become permanently stained and your pipes will need a plumber. Any type of paint should be disposed of properly to prevent the chemicals from getting into our groundwater.

Most waste management companies will accept paint cans that contain a small amount of paint that has dried up before the can is disposed of. The paint can also be mixed with kitty litter before disposal. Full cans are considered hazardous waste, and you should check with a disposal facility for proper disposal in your area.

Hazardous chemicals and pesticides

Some household cleaning products recommended for cleaning sinks or toilets contain hazardous chemicals, but the concentration is low.

Check with your local waste disposal office for proper disposal methods, as they may vary from place to place.

Prescription medications

If you throw a bottle of pills down the sink or toilet, they may clog, but they usually dissolve. The real problem is that these chemicals get into the water system and affect living organisms and our food supply.
