"What's Left of Twin Arrows" Originally named Canyon Padre Trading Post when it was built in the late 1940’s off the historic Route 66. It was renamed Twin Arrows in 1957 to pay homage to next stop, 2 Guns. 1 of 2000 famous Valentine Diners is located here, it’s badly damaged, but came ready to use when delivered & was created by Arthur Valentine out of Wichita, Kansas. Twins Arrows was owned by the Troxell Family from 1955 to 1985. When the I-40 was built in the 1970’s the “Best Little Shop on I-40” saw a decline. Twin Arrows closed in 1990 & reopened in 1995 but closed forever shortly after. Now this once popular stop sits in utter decay, slowing returning back into the ground. In 1886 the Board of Missions for Freedmen of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, under the leadership of the group's secretary the Rev. Richard Allen, began planning for the establishment of a black girls' school in Texas. After a statewide survey, they chose Crockett as the school site because of the area's large black population and because of a local black parochial school operated by the Rev. Samuel Fisher Tenny, pastor of the city's First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Allen's wife Mary, for whom the school was named, was instrumental in raising the organizational funds for the new seminary. Dr. Byrd R. Smith became the school's first black president in 1924 and initiated a period of growth which included the adoption of new programs and the admission of male students. Transferred to the Missionary General Baptist Convention of Texas in 1944, Mary Allen College became a 4-year liberal arts institution. In 1972, plagued by a series of legal and financial setbacks, the school closed. "Romeo & Juliet" #Mausoleums & family #crypts graciously accept brick, mortar, & steel to enclose lifeless shells for the rest of eternity. Protecting them from the ruthlessness of mother nature, the war of time, & the cruelty of desecrators. St. Luis 1 is the oldest cemetery in Luisiana & is by far the most famous. It's survived over 225 years since its inception in 1789. Not even Hurricane Katrina could wash away the mark this cemetery has made over the centuries. Each grave has withstood the odds, some made it through in better shape as others lay nameless, scattered, & lost in time. The unique gothic marble & iron decay speaks to those who listen as the cool salted New Orleans breeze buzz throughout St. Luis 1's narrow walkways. With wanderlust, I lost myself through these towering shrines that give praise to those who have passed so long ago. They all speak the same message... "I existed & I was loved". Views From Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital Hidden behind the tourist-ridden Immigration Museum and unknown to most people is the fact that Ellis Island contains a long-forgotten 22-building hospital complex, which during its busiest years, from 1902 to 1930, was one of the largest public health undertakings in United States history, and a place of heartbreak and hope, sickness and occasionally recovery. It seems rather odd, perhaps, to begin the new year with a bunch of quite dark posts but this series will be pics from a workshop I attended on Ellis Island last September. Dark stormy clouds arrived at various times throughout the day, so it was perfect weather for exploring the huge haunting abandoned hospital.
