Thinking about how Catherine and Grigor turn to each other in the wake of Peter’s death. How they were the only ones who witnessed it (Hugo and Velementov notwithstanding). How Grigor is the first person Catherine has to convince that he’s not dead. And how once it is revealed that he is dead, by both of them breaking simultaneously, they two are the only ones truly ravaged by the grief it brings.
Thinking about Catherine asking Grigor to tell her stories about Peter. Thinking about Grigor’s loyalty being won in the first episode by the simple fact that Catherine makes Peter happy. Thinking about the fact that Grigor won’t kill her because Peter loved her.
The two of them were wholeheartedly in love with the same man. A man who was baffling, who was obviously without remorse or second thought for much of his life. A man who hurt them both, intentionally and unintentionally, over and over and over again. A man who they both had tried to kill, and who had tried to kill them in return. No one else was as completely devoted to him. Not Elizabeth, not Georgina. Everyone else in his life saw him as a pawn, as something to manipulate to get what they want, noted when Georgina states “Nothing I used to own is mine anymore.” and when Elizabeth gets mad at him for not secretly ordaining Paul. Catherine and Grigor though. They get mad at him, yes. They are hurt by him time and time again. But they don’t use him. They love him. Completely and purely. Naively. It is why Grigor is the only person Catherine trusts with Paul. It is why she kisses him when they get back to the palace. The only people who can understand the depths of their grief are them. Their love for him blinded them. Their love for him stunted them. No one else will ever understand the depths of their love for such a madman, and no one else will ever comprehend the depths of insanity they were both slowly driven to by their love for him. In both their love for, and grief of Peter, they are completely united.
“I could’ve said anything else. Any other words. Salt bath, otter spit, Irish stew, hurt me, love me, kiss me, forget all, touch me, hit me, shoot me. Love you with every sinew and one day it will hurt all over to never touch you again. To never feel our eyes meet and inflame me. To never hear an inane thought that somehow made my blood sing. Don’t go. Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me.” - Catherine the Great
“Fuck you for your lack of love. He was a man who felt everything. Not with the hurdles and cul-de-sacs and fences we stop ourselves with. If he was fury, he was nothing but fury, nothing but joy, nothing but killing. He knew life whole, not by measly portion. He loved me that way. He was the rarest of men. He was all fucking in on life! You will never see his like again! For my life ended too, in that freezing water. I loved him. More than I have ever loved anything or ever will.” - Grigor Dymov

I could write an essay on all the intricacies and nuances of the INSANE relationship dynamic of Peter/Grigor/George. The three of them are so codependent it’s crazy. Like George loves Grigor but also loves fucking Peter (and there’s also a weird power dynamic between them because he is emperor), but she doesn’t love Peter romantically. And Grigor loves George so he hates that she’s fucking Peter, but he can’t hate Peter because he loves him so much (platonically, but maybe not???). And Peter is so oblivious and has been made so entitled to everything by being emperor that he needs them both to be completely and utterly devoted to him, and has never stopped to think that maybe he shouldn’t fuck his best friend’s wife. They’re his friends but he also has so much power over them. It’s simultaneously beneficial and awful for everyone involved. It’s so toxic but none of them can imagine life otherwise. It’s so interesting and it should have been explored more on the show.

The Great (Hulu) season 3 just came out and we haven't finished watching it YET, but we need to talk about how incredible Catherine and Peter's love is.
Like come on, Peter is an indefensibly horrible man who has done some incredibly unforgivable things (we are still crying over Leo, plus fucking Catherine's mom to dead is batshit), but.....we just can't stop rooting for him and Catherine to somehow get their happily ever after. Is it insane? Yes. Are we planning on changing? No
It's wonderful that Catherine went through with stabbing Peter at the end of season 2 (she thought it was him which is what counts), because even though she lives him with all her heart, she's still trying to make rational decisions
(Season 3 spoilers in this paragraph) Even things like him refusing to kill the man who assaulted him as a child because Catherine didn't want to (he only slipped up after Simitz taunted Grigor), and the fact that he doesn't want to sleep with anyone other than Catherine anymore is so much evidence of his growth!!!
Anyway, the point is that their chemistry is incredible and I am rooting for them till my dying breath! What do you think? Watch out video and let us know!!

Promised- Finale (Grigor Dymov x fem! Reader, Arranged Marriage AU series)
Tumblr media
Series Summary: When Emperor Peter's behavior towards your family threatens the alliance between them and Russia, the only way to solve it from breaking is through an arranged marriage with his friend, the handsome but heartbroken Count Grigor Dymov. A man you barely know.
Previous Chapters: One//Two//Three//Four//Five//Six//Seven//Eight//Nine//Ten//Eleven
Chapter Summary: You and Grigor enjoy a long-denied honeymoon
Content Warnings: Some discussions of sex and cursing and mentions of pregnancy and babies- don't worry, Y/N isn't pregnant. But VERY fluffy!
Word Count: 1584
A/N: Thank you guys so much for supporting this series throughout! Now I thought was the best time to conclude it! When season 3 of The Great comes out and should I get inspired, there might be a season 2 of this fic like what @ladystrallan did with I Really Wish I Hated You (which, btw, highly recommend if you love The Great Fanfics). Who knows?! But I hope all of you loved reading it as much as I loved writing this series!

You and Grigor were planning on returning to court. You both just wanted something denied to you when you were rushed to be married and when there was a coup- a honeymoon. Three whole months of a honeymoon.
The days were never more lovely- lovemaking at night, awakening when one felt like it, the most sumptuous meals, playing cards by the fireside, reading to each other, and you showing off the various songs you knew how to play. You were starting to teach Grigor chords and his clumsy practicing of scales with mutters of “fuck!” at a mistake could be heard. You still kept shooting practice, but you were relaxed, not caring if you missed the odd target.
It was quite warm for Russia the past two weeks. Flowers were deep in their bloom in the gardens, and it was green everywhere. The vineyards seemed to be a far brighter green than you expected. Perhaps springtime was arriving sooner than you expected or maybe it was a warm spot for a few days. You had to wear your lighter silks as opposed to the warm furs to keep one safe from your new home country’s notorious chill.
As you and your husband toured the grounds together that afternoon, there were fruits of light green and dark purple. You would both look at each other, pluck the small fruits, and try bites of them yourself, feeling the juicy sweetness burst on your tongues, as if only briefly. Grigor would wipe the juice off of his sleeve and give you a kiss and you would taste the grape in his breath as if combined with yours you made your own special wine. Grigor was in his favorite deep green. You had insisted he keep a few buttons down so you could see some of his chest hair. You insisted it was absolutely sexy of him when he wore shirts (especially white ones) with a few buttons undone and he took note. Yes, it was the wrong color today, but you didn’t care. Perhaps that could wait for later tonight when you would hop on him like a rabbit until you screamed each other’s names, not caring about disturbing the servants sleeping below. You were in a bright red dress with golden floral patterns all over it and you perfumed yourself with rose water.
You matched and complimented in your dress as had your souls on the inside- each perfect and making only the other look better when beside it.
You emerged from the kiss and wiped your hand on your skirt.
“Could you hold my hand, my dear?” you asked, presenting your hand out.
He raised his eyebrows.
“Oh abso-fucking-lutely,” he replied, eagerly taking yours.
It was warm and encompassing, the fingers intertwined within each other to feel the pulse of each other. As you both walked back home, the day was fading. The sky turned into a mix of orange and pink and the crispness of evening etched around you. Once you approached back to the manor, the housekeeper greeted you both and assured you that dinner would be ready in one or two hours. Olga, the little servant girl, handed you back your beloved dog and both of you cooed over her.
“Oh and Madame Dymova! Here! Messenger said it’s from Paris! And it’s for you and the master!” she added on, handing over a letter with a familiar wax seal.
Before you could comment on it, Sonya let out a bright bark for want of attention.
“Here Sonya- found this! Here- Good girl!” Grigor offered.
From his pocket, he pulled out a truffle and fed it to the eager and always hungry pup.
“Would you like some wine? There’s a new one they just made here and it’s fucking astounding,” he offered.
“Oh, yes! And ask the kitchen for a plate of bread and cheese and fruit, perhaps?” you asked.
“I don’t see why not!” he replied, giving you a peck on your forehead before going down to the kitchen.
You made your way to the back porch area outside on your white seats and white chairs. You found it had not grown so chilly that you would require heaps of blankets as you have in the past. Sonya lay happily on your lap panting away. Though grown, she still saw herself as a puppy who had to have every last of her needs attended to, or else her mistress would hear her barking and mischief. But you loved her more for it.
You pulled from your reticule an unopened letter from the dress of your pocket. It couldn’t be your family- you heard just yesterday that you were an aunt to a beautiful little niece. Both you and Grigor were already making plans to travel and visit your family and for you to be introduced and be acquainted with his own. So, who could it be? Was it Catherine about her baby or the new education laws? Orlo recommending a new philosophy book to you? Who? You saw the name on it and gasped.
“It’s George! George wrote to us!” you told Sonya, who only tilted her head.
You then ripped it open and smiled, your heart touched by the contents. From the corner, you saw Grigor come out to approach the table. He smiled, holding two glasses of wine, and giving one to you.
“Why thank you, darling!” you chirruped at him.
“No problem at all,” he answered.
A servant immediately arrived behind and held a platter of cheeses, slices of bread, and apples. His blue eyes went to the letter.
“What is that? Who is it?” he asked.
You smiled, handing him the papers.
“Why, it’s George!? Can’t you believe it? She’s in Paris of all places! Oh, that must be wonderful! And here…she said she met someone who she truly loves and who loves her! Oh, I’m so happy for her! We must write back and ask her more about this!” you squealed.
“Why- how good for her! I’m glad!” Grigor wished genuinely with a shrug and a relaxed smile.
Both of you held up your glasses of wine.
“Should we toast to her?” you asked.
Grigor shook his head.
“I have a better one. To what brought us together in the first place. Here, Y/N-to the alliance!”
“To the alliance!” you agreed, daintily clinking your glasses.
Both of you took a first sip.
“It won’t be too long before we return- so much will be different…” Grigor began.
“I’m just glad Marial is in prison…I’ve slept better at night since then…” you sighed.
He did frown briefly. He took a deep drink and set down his glass.
“Well…part of me is eager. Been worried sick over Peter.”
“But you always are, you silly shit!” you teased, setting your own glass down.
He smiled at the words. You thought there was never a more beautiful smile than that of Grigor Dymov when he was well and truly happy. Your heart would always burst with love for him at the sight.
His letters seem fine and happy though…he’s thrilled about the baby. Got a name picked out and everything!”
“What if we have a baby- will we be even ready for that?” you suggested.
So far, your courses were like clockwork and Grigor would spoil you with bedrest and vodka and embraces when the cramps tormented you. But that doesn’t mean the time would never come. In fact, with all the fucking you had been doing it was a pure miracle it hadn’t happened yet!
“I don’t know if we’ll ever be, Y/N…but what about life after the coup? Things will be so…so different. Peter’s not in charge as much. There’s a royal baby on the way. George is in France. Catherine’s changing all the laws to what she wants. Everything is upside down…” he muttered.
“But we can take it…” you assured him.
He clutched his hand onto yours in response and you used your other hand to rest it on his cheek. He relaxed into it, using a hand to touch yours.
“We can take anything as long as we’re together, darling,” he replied.
“Of course, we can, my dear husband…” you cooed.
"Oh, say that again!” he insisted.
You crawled on his lap, kissing his face- his freckles, his forehead, his cheekbones, his chin.
“Dear husband, dear husband, my Grigor, my darling…” you mumbled between the kisses.
“Fuck, you make me hard. Keep it up and I might have to have you on this table before dinner!” he confessed.
“Wait until after dinner!” you insisted with a joking slap on his arm.
“If Countess Dymova requests it, who am I to deny her that!” he gave in.
You giggled and paused. Both of you breathe deeply the warmth of each other and the closeness.
He kissed you with soft lips again, but there was a chasteness- a tenderness to how he cupped your cheek when it happened. You cuddled into his chest as the sun set and he placed an arm around you to draw circles on your back as the dog lay contentedly smiling on the floor with her pink tongue out.
You were happy. After such chaos you had been through- you were completely happy. Dinner was about to be served. You had a home in court and out. You had a precious pup. You had friends. And most of all, you had found a happy, faithful marriage. And a husband who you loved and who loved you.
And this time the wine did in fact not taste like shit.

This might be too straightforward for a show like The Great, but me and my sentimental behind can’t help but root for Catherine x Grigor going forward.
People have brought up before how no one feels the loss of Peter like the two of them do, and… yeah…
Tumblr media
(Unspoken and strong shared emotion my beloved 💖)
Anyway, I feel like they may be heading down that road, because when you look at the way the two of them worked together for Paul’s best interests, it comes off like the beginning stages of a new dynamic. They have common goals now because (imo) they’ve been bound together by Peter’s death.
Now, my knowledge of Catherine the Great is limited to the quick scan of her Wikipedia article I did a few months ago, but if I remember right - she never remarried, and her and Grigor were lovers in real life? I know there are some significant differences over how their relationship played out, but still - the show DOES like to pepper in some historical accuracies from time to time. Plus, I think it would serve to make Catherine an interesting mirror to Peter if Catherine were to become best friends with George, and take Grigor as her lover.
I also find it interesting the way things have shifted around when you involve Marial in the mix. Grigor and Marial came together and had the shared experience of supporting/loving their best friends who they thought were making terrible choices by being in love, and now that Peter has died, Marial has put herself on the opposite side of both Grigor AND Catherine by staunchly standing by her hatred of Peter despite their grief over him. What was once just a point of contention now feels like a squaring off. I could see that pushing her further away from Grigor emotionally, to the point where she’s almost like a second George to him (like ‘I love you, but at what cost?’), and we already witnessed it driving a wedge between her and Catherine - opening up the way for George to slip in and become her new best friend.
One more thing I want to touch on, is when Catherine slept with comet guy. She was conflicted because it felt like it was taking her a step further away from Peter, and she said “I don’t want to” (Rip, my heart 💔). I think becoming involved with Grigor would be the most gentle and natural option for her going forward. Comet guy may have scratched an itch, but talking with Grigor about Peter soothed her tired, grieving soul. Grigor’s telling Catherine a story about Peter was the thing that brought the first genuine smile to both of their faces since the loss that broke them.

I just finished the show. This is such a good fucking show!
Even though i am HEARTBROKEN, through Elisabeth, Grigor and Catherine the show really gave the room to sort of process it and by giving that last kick, really got us out of the pain and invested in how she will keep her reign. Truly smart writing. Like with just 10 episodes, they wrote a love story, a heartbreak and a riveting political play, like only The Great can.
I am still definitely broken about Peter's death. I don't know how the show will do whole seasons without him, and very very selfishly wish they don't make another love for Catherine.
When Elisabeth said basically fuck off to Peter the Great, i was in pain, wishing Peter had also said the same. And elisabeths fate of losing two children to water, my god.
Paul will never know how much Peter loved him. Catherine always humming Their Song. Wearing his clothes. Grigor, the true himbo. So Torn by grief he thinks a box is a good place to keep a child. Immersing himself in bath fully clothed? He is i think the most affected because i don't he truly knows how to live without Peter. Also what's up with Marial? I understand but also dude!!!
Charit Wakefield is so good. Her actual pain in losing Peter, sewn with George's intrinsic manipulation, she is good. Amazing. So is Phoebe Fox as Marial and every single person in this cast because otherwise the insanity of this show could never deliver the emotional impact.
I always liked Nicholas Hoult, but after this show i am completely and Fully obsessed with him. I only hope he'll be back as a ghost next season. (But i like that they didn't bring him back this season, it would've hurt too much). Because as you said his and elles chemistry needs to shine more.
Okay as of now, this is all i have for thoughts. Might have more once I start giffing, but until then you are released from the grips of my 1k words long asks.
i agree with you wholeheartedly!! despite the great loss (lol), the show has proven its ability to still excel w/o peter. the last episode is riveting and freeing. it shows precisely why peter needs to be gone for catherine to be great (of course the show will be great focusing on catherine and peter's love story but the great is never about that) people who are mad that they get rid of peter or say that catherine x peter is the whole point of the show don't understand the show at all. i feel like all of the characters (not just catherine) have a chance to develop in a new direction due to peter's death and that gives the show a fresh air/start🫶 and please do keep sending me your thoughts haha <3

The weird way The Great frames infidelity
The Great is a show which portrays many extramarital relationships. However, it is quite inconsistent with the way in which they are framed by the narrative. This portrayal results in a strange theme of ‘cheating is okay if you don’t love your spouse’. Let’s look at all of the affairs in the show and how they are framed:
1. Catherine and Leo: this affair is consensual from all sides until it isn’t. Peter is the one who sets up Catherine and Leo, who she ends up falling in love with. Peter only starts to have a problem with this relationship once he falls in love with Catherine, and we all know how that ends. Catherine is not portrayed as in the wrong for cheating, because her marriage to Peter is loveless and he is a horrible person in season 1. Additionally, Peter is also not framed as bad for being jealous, only for killing Leo.
2. Peter and George: the most fucked up relationship in the show. Both are married; George to Grigor who she does love, and Peter to Catherine who he doesn’t love (at first). It is also pretty evident that their relationship started long before Peter married Catherine. There is an obvious power imbalance here. Peter is the absolute ruler of the country and George is his subject. No matter how ambiguous the question of consent is, he could absolutely have her killed if he wanted to. A lot of people forget how volatile and absolutely cutthroat Peter was in season 1. Catherine is hurt when Peter invites her into a threesome with George, but his infidelity largely doesn’t matter after she decides she doesn’t love him. Peter cheating on his wife is pretty much not a big problem at all and just adds to reasons why he is a ‘bad person’ in season 1. There is also a second element that makes this affair ‘worse’. George’s husband is Peter’s best friend. We see just how distraught Grigor is about this affair, finally snapping and trying to kill Peter. George is framed as an ‘evil whore’ for cheating on her husband with his best friend, while no one mentions how Peter is fucking his best friend’s wife. Peter is the emperor of Russia. He literally could have chosen anyone to be his mistress and he chose his best friend’s wife. Additionally, in the 18th century ‘mistress of the king’ was a legitimate position and one of the only ways for women to improve their position in court. She also makes many references to how she only does this to keep her (and Grigor’s) position in court. (See scenes from s1e5 and s1e9)
3. Peter and Joanna: this one is also a mess. Joanna is obviously framed as bad for trying to seduce her daughter’s husband. Peter is framed as in the wrong— but there is a bit of ‘he couldn’t help himself because Joanna seduced him’— but mostly because of who he cheated with. It’s not that big of a deal that he cheated, it’s bad because he fucked her mother. (And then she fell out the window and died and he covered it up)
4. Grigor and Marial: Similarly to Catherine and Leo, this relationship is also ‘person finds true love outside of their evil spouse’ except George was not an abusive murderous tyrant, but that’s besides the point. This affair is framed as very triumphant for Grigor; he has finally escaped his toxic marriage! Even though his relationship with Marial is very toxic. She is constantly rude to him, lies to him, hates his friends, not to mention how she treats him after Peter’s death. She wants to be the only person in his life. When George returns from France to find that her husband has left her for another woman, she is justifiably upset but is framed by the narrative as in the wrong even though she does nothing to break up Grigor and Marial. Marial is also married to Maxim but he’s 11 so it doesn’t really matter, and the fact that he is upset about her infidelity is played for laughs more than anything.
Honorable mentions:
- Hugo and Agnes: they both make passes at other people but are both always in on it
- Catherine and the American ambassador: it’s fine because she does it to get back at Peter for fucking her mother
- Peter’s countless hookups: don’t matter because they mostly happen when he and Catherine are not in love
- Tatyana and Arkady: Arkady gets really defensive at the idea of Tatyana doing anything with Peter, but she wants to take George’s place as his mistress. This is pretty evident when they think Pugachev is Peter and Tatyana is desperately trying to fuck him. It doesn’t amount to much of anything
When you look at all these relationships and how they are framed, one thing stands out. The only person who is vilified for cheating is George. Even though the dynamic between her, Peter, and Grigor is super complex, the one takeaway the narrative and most people in the fandom get is ‘George is an evil slut’. Even when she gets her ‘punishment’ and loses Peter, Grigor, and some of her standing in court, it’s still not enough and people want her dead. The theme turns out to be ‘cheating is only bad if you’re George’.
