what fic/au were you working on most recently, what is it about, and how did you come up with it?

Hi Rose!!! Omg okay so. I have transed so many genders. Because I am trans and it's fun lol

I've been on a bit of a hiatus from fic writing up until very recently, but a few weeks ago I pulled a year-old concept out of the depths of my Google drive and now it once again has a chokehold on me </3

The background is this: Ysione (Evil Xisuma) was sent off of Hermitcraft to make friends because the only people they ever talked to willingly were Xisuma and Zedaph. While out, they discover a fun server plugin that swaps the sex of whomever it affects and is mainly used for... Private servers of a certain persuasion. They decide that it would be a fun prank to send to their brother unannounced.

...Except that when the worm he made drops its payload, it spreads and affects everyone on hermitcraft and resists attempts to remove it.

On page are the rest of the hermits in various stages of glee and/or severe distress. The hermits that already knew they were trans (i.e., Grian, Gem) are having a great time. Cis hermits range from using the plugin for its intended purposes (Keralis and xB lmao), to vague but manageable discomfort (False, Impulse), to suffering (Doc and Etho), to having a gender crisis (Tango). I have a whole spreadsheet to keep track of how different hermits have reacted to the plugin :D If anyone is curious about how a particular hermit reacted I can and will infodump at a moment's notice.

The story is all about friendship, community, body image, gender identity, and mutual support. Even when they're Going Through It, I wanted the overall impression of the story to be gentle and feel-good.

Scar would not recommend growing wings, sure they are neat afterward, but the pain was horrible. Grian helped him through it, though mostly it was making bird sounds of distress as Jimmy and Tango were the ones who deal with the blood. Given Scar's screams woke almost everyone near them up. So there were some slight problems with soulmates that Grian hadn't foreseen, but Scar was doing fine now... sort of.

Having new appendages, then spending the next day achy and sore wasn't easy. Scar was uneven on his feet, the new weight was odd, and top it off with his bones now being hallow so he felt much lighter. Grian was steady with him, trying to teach him the best he could.

Plus keeping them... tucked was annoying. The darn things just seemed to like to spread out at any given moment, and learning to control the joints was slow. Jimmy thought it was funny, but Scar wasn't sure why. Muttering things to Tango, who was snickering as well.

Jimmy was an avian himself, and mostly left the talking and learning up to Grian. But clearly, they weren't telling him something, and each time Scar groaned at how he was having trouble closing his wings, Grian was no help and just stared at him.

They were pretty wings though, with soft blues, whites, and blacks that blended into the sky, and feathers that shimmered in the sunlight. They were still trying to find out what bird he was. Tango said he might be a Blue Jay, which made others giggle. Blue Jays were noisy birds, and bold ones at that, known to dive bomb anything that came near their nest.

Scar huffed a bit trying to smooth down the feathers on his wings, and close them again. "Grian, how do you even do this!?" he whined a bit, he liked having wings, they were cool, but caring for them was a little harder than Scar thought. Though Grian seemed to enjoy helping him preen... and never really teaching Scar how to preen by himself. Like Scar knew how to preen for someone else, but it was a bit different on yourself. And getting the back feathers was a little challenging.

Also Grian would make more bird sounds than normal and seemed to be catching himself each time. Laughing it off in a tight tone, Scar pouted through it. Wings also had a mind of their own, anytime Scar thought he was getting the hang of things, he'd hold out his arms in a happy gesture, only for them to snap open with him. And Grian seemed to always choke on his own breath, spending the next few minutes coughing as Scar was trying to close them again.

Alright, what was up with that? What was Jimmy not telling him, and why was Grian acting so weird!? Scar decided to find out for himself and march over to the Ranch. Leaving Grian to regain his breath and flushed face.

He would find out what was going on, and maybe learn how to get these wings to not fluff up at any moment Grian would touch the feathers. And... maybe Jimmy wouldn't laugh too long this time when he told what happened.

Clueless Scar, he goes in to say Grian's name and show him what he found, only for his wings to be like "FUCK ME!" I'm laughing at my own mental image of this.

sorry to send another ask so soon but i’m rereading the first few chapters again because i just. man this fic is so good. hope you don’t mind the super long ask lol :p

chapter 1:

i love the detail of it being in death order when everyone joins the game. cleo dying first, then with a dialogue line separating her line from everyone else’s, bc she was the only hermit to permadie in ep 7. very clever i love it

the writing of ren’s internal panic/fear!! man!! i love the line “The fear in his body explodes, cold but not freezing him in place, and he readies himself to face a devil.” it’s so perfect for ren’s character and it makes me really anticipate what happens next, even though i’ve already read this!

i absolutely LOVE your characterization. usually in a fic like this, there’s always obvious favourites yk? (i’m guilty of this myself lol) but with this it seems like you’ve done everyone justice and everyone is written so so well

with the first descriptions of everyone, i am really really curious to see the effects of the new hybrid traits and how each character deals with it y’know

(i am also curious on where ren is getting all the blood he keeps dripping LOL

the switch to false’s pov is so great, i absolutely love seeing other hermit’s outside perspectives and suspicions of what could have possibly happens to the 8

just read the ending note and the fact that english isn’t your first language is absolutely astonishing!! all of the grammar and everything is so so well written!! congrats to you genuinely because that’s super impressive that’s so cool

Congrats on being the first reader to pick up on the death order thing as far as I know! I'm actually really proud of that detail :0) in the same chapter, the order X describes everyone was supposed to be the same order, but so many people ended up being described in pairs that it didn't really come through.

also, small personal headcanon as to why everyone is so tired that doesn't really come up in the fic, the time between servers didn't pass exactly the same, so the last day of 3rd life was a Friday, and everyone respawned back on a Tuesday, leaving their bodies to deal with a couple days long "empty" period. does that make sense? fuck if I know but it sounds like it does in my head.
