Welcome back to the saga of "Thorfinn, I bet your dad was the Viking equivalent of a feminist." We have Mommy Bjorn deciding that he needs to instill some knowledge in young Thorfinn. After all, considering the incident with the flirting village girl, he needs all of the help that he is able to get. He sits Thorfinn down and tells him that some afab people get periods.
He is absolutely horrified after Mother Bjorn explains this concept to him.
"Afab people have to bleed every month!? To not have babies!?"
Then, it all clicks for him, it doesn't, and he looks at Bjorn like he just saw a ghost.
"Is this why Askeladd is always pregnant? Because he doesn't get his period..."
Bjorn shakes his head and refuses to give up the bit at this point, so he just agrees with Thorfinn and says that's the reason. Thorfinn wonders when he is going to get his period. He checks every month and worries that he is going to bleed out, but he doesn't. Then he goes to Askeladd and demands to know who got him pregnant.
"Kid, what?" Askeladd is confused at first and looks at Bjorn for confirmation. Bjorn nods and Askeladd decides to continue fucking with him. "Oh."
"Shut it, baldy. I'm not stupid; I know how these things work! I haven't gotten my period yet, so that must mean that I am pregnant. Who is the father!? Who got me pregnant!?" Thorfinn demands to know this.
Cue Askeladd telling him that he is going to be a mother and preparing him.
You think this is the only time this happens? Oh no, you are seriously wrong. Thorfinn... our little gremlin... still doesn't understand periods.
During the war arc, Canute ends up with a bloody thigh as he was stabbed, and Thorfinn stares dead into his eyes and says "You are on your period. I knew you were a woman."

@cawckys-multi CONT.
If Thorfinn really wanted to make him let go, he was going to have to try a lot harder and use something a lot sharper than his teeth. Did the kid remember who he was dealing with? Guess not. Sometimes he really wondered where the young punk's head was. "Alright now, enough of that. Quit causing a scene." He really didn't sound terribly concerned either way as he marched them off away from the small crowd of rabble-rousers that Thorfinn had managed to piss off. As much as he loved a good fight, he could tell just with a glance that none of them would be any fun to play with, so they weren't really worth his time. His or Thorfinn's. "You really need to learn to pick your battles, Thorfinn. Its unbecoming of a warrior to pick pointless fights. At least challenge someone who'll give you a good time."
A feral snarl leaves Thorfinn's lips and he bites harder, eyes narrowing as the bridge of his nose wrinkles. To makes matters worse, or perhaps amusing to the older man, he gives a jerking motion of his head like he's trying to tear flesh.
They had pissed him off almost as much as Askeladd had when he told him to stay with Thorkell. He glares up at Thorkell, not saying a word, but that look on his words probably speaks louder than any of his words could. As soon as he was let go of, he was going to go back and he was going to finish what he started.
He was going to make sure that bite hurt too. Who was Thorkell to lecture him? No one. He had no right.

Did you read ‚Mud of his Mud‘ by @errataporridge? I highly recommend it. The last chapter hit me right in the feelings. Here you have little gremlin Thorfinn (even if you feel sorry for him, be careful -Bjorn was bitten) and Askeladd being Askeladd

Imma be honest, I will not be able to write the coming week and it only made me crave it more
Since starting S2 it feels like saying goodbye to S1!Thorfinn lol, with his gremlin antics. S2!Thorfinn is so entirely different. So I've been wondering if I should collect a few requests for the coming week to write for S1 Thorfinn to properly say goodbye to him in my head.

Round 2, Match 13: Askeladd vs. Rune Saint John
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Submitted kids:
Askeladd: Thorfinn, Canute
Rune Saint John: Max Saint John, Quinn Saint Nicholas, Layne Dawncreek, Annawan Dawncreek, Corbitant Dawncreek
Propaganda under the cut!
Askeladd:
1. "The funny thing about Askeladd is he keeps killing the dad's of characters and then adopts them.
At the very start of the show he kills the main character's father. The 6 y/o main character vows revenge and follows him around trying to kill him for like ten years. Askeladd does not take this seriously at all and is basically his mentor and new dad, even though Thorfinn despises him.
Then later they meet Canute (prince of Denmark). Askeladd kills his right-hand-man/father-figure to toughen Canute up, then becomes Canute's evil advisor/father figure in his quest to overthrow his biological father (king of denmark)
Askeladd ends up killing the king of Denmark as well which makes us three for three on the father-killing.
None of this ever bites Askeladd in the ass btw he's free to kill and adopt and is having a grand old time. He's so funny about it, too"
2. "Askeladd is the leader of a band of Vikings. He was hired to kill a man named Thors. Thors' son Thorfinn witnessed the murdur of his father at the age of six and swore to avenge his death by killing Askeladd. So he joined Askeladd's band. Askeladd, who despite being the cause of Thors' death respected the man, and agreed to duel with Thorfinn if he followed his orders during fights. Thorfinn was defeated each time and Askeladd (in a twisted and mocking way) always gave him advice how to be better. In the end Thorfinn didn't kill Askeladd because - as Askeladd alluded to by his own story of killing someone out of hate - he would've killed him sometime earlier during those 11 years if he really hated him. In the end Thorfinn realized too late that from a hated person Askeladd became kind of a father figure to him during those 11 years. (The mangaka called Askeladd 'an amazing tsundere dad')
Canute is the youngest son of the Danish king. When the Danes were fighting in England the king sent Canute to lead the siege of London so Canute could die there and there wouldn't be any fights for the throne in the future. Askeladd, being a sly mastermind who plays 5D chess at all times, decided to save Canute from the enemy forces so when he'd return him safely to the king he could get into a position so he could influence Canute to protect Wales. But before that he had to get rid of Canute's previous adoptive father, Ragnar. (Yes, it's a pattern.) So when Ragnar was dying, he told Askeladd that ""Btw, the king hates his son and wants him dead"", so Askeladd had to recalculate a lot of things, and in the end he and Canute worked together to kill the king and create a situation where Canute could come out as a strong heir.
In his last minutes, Askeladd decided to not chose between Wales and Canute, and saved both instead, and used his last breath to convince Thorfinn to let go of his anger.
Sometimes a family is a half-Danish mercenary who kills father figures, an gremlin child from Iceland with anger issues, and a timid Danish prince who goes through a strong character developmen by becoming rejecting his religion."
Rune Saint John:
“Oh my god, oh lord where do I start. Within the FIRST CHAPTER of the FIRST BOOK he accidentally adopts a teenager in exchange for a magical artifact during a deal with a fae- this teen is Max! He then later adopts Quinn, whos older brother he is dating. Then he adopts the three Dawncreek children after a series of events in the second book that i wont get into due to plot spoilers, but it was ✨traumatic✨ AND the author had confirmed that there will be ANOTHER kid joining his found family in the upcoming 4th book. Rune is the chosen one, there are MANY prophecies about him, to the point that Quinn; who has the ability to see future probabilities, finds it difficult to look at him. He experienced horrific sexual assault, and he just wants to be a decent person and look after these traumatized magic children. Every member of his found family is a chaos gremlin- including Rune. Honestly this book series is so so very near and dear to my heart, and it handles topics like grooming and assault with incredible tact and care and more people should read about Rune and his queer disaster found family.”

So I reread this post of mine and there I said that Zia's experiences should've radicalized her more to the level of her getting her hands on a knife or a rifle later in the story. And since I'm watching Vinland Saga right now, it would've been fun seeing Zia reaching Vinland Saga season one Thorfinn 'the gremlin child' levels of radical.

Has there been any news about the 2nd season of Vinland Saga? I need it. I need it so bad. Like yeah the first season was great and I was so pleased that they really drove home that this isn’t some cool viking violence fantasy, this is a tragic story about a traumatized child who gets pulled into the world of war and it fucks him up profoundly! The scene when Thorfinn kills for the first time, even though it’s in self defense, is horrible and visceral! This isn’t cool or badass, it’s just terribly sad! I was really worried the anime would be all ‘wow cool vikings!!’ instead of ‘living in a culture of violence is extremely damaging for everyone involved and nothing good comes of glorifying it’ but they really got it right!
But!! Season 1 ended with the End of the Prologue and now we’re ready for that real good redemption arc!!! I’m so ready for Thorfinn at his absolute rock bottom having to stare his crimes in the face and accept the full weight of what he’s done! Even though he did it because he was a traumatized kid who had no healthy way to process what he had been through! Because that still doesn’t make it okay and doesn’t erase the damage he did and he has to deal with that and decide that he wants to live on and try to be a better person!
Vinland Saga’s got a real gold standard of a redemption arc. It’s just so so good!!! Like it’s not just about Thorfinn trying to do good in the world to make up for all the harm he caused, it’s also about him learning to open his heart and become a warmer and kinder person who’s capable of love! That’s some good shit right there!!

On today's episode of "Is Thorfinn stupid or just raised by a war criminal?", we have the subject of flirting. I'd imagine that as an attractive young, single Viking, Thorfinn gets a lot of maidens in the many villages they raid and travel through, trying to subtly and not so subtly win his favor.
Obviously, Thorfinn was raised by a bunch of raging misogynists, so he doesn't think highly or much of women in his younger years. So when the time comes that a woman flirts with Thorfinn, he is flabbergasted. Most of the time, Thorfinn is unable to pick up on anybody flirting with him, so he just thinks of it as them annoying him for no reason.
On our normal cue, we have Askeladd teaching him and telling him that those village maidens are trying to win his hand in marriage. He reacts in a normal teenage way and shoves a girl to the ground. Later, Askeladd makes him flirt with a woman in exchange for another duel. He brings Bjorn along so they can laugh at this train wreck together.
The young maiden stands before Thorfinn with a bashful expression.
Cue some awful flirting.
Thorfinn panics and punches the girl, knocking her out.
"Am I married now?"
Askeladd is on his knees, barking out laughter, and Bjorn is just shaking his head and trying not to smile.
"Good job, kid. You now have your first wife."
Thorfinn indeed did not have his first girlfriend or wife.

Yo wait, for the most recent ask game you reblogged, I want vinland saga. Tell me your blorbo, little meow meow, etc. from it, I must know them
:0 you like vinland saga??? into my dms with you, immediately!
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): Thorfinn. Of course it's Thorfinn. In 2019 I did the entirety of inktober dedicated to this gremlin, and he's my pfp on tumblr, so of course i love him to bits.
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): Karli! He's baby, literally. And yukimura gives him teh best background expressions.
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): Idk if Thorkell counts as underrated because i feel like everyone loves him, but i wanted to mention him because i adore him. But Ylva is also a fave of mine, and I think she really is underrated.
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): Cordelia!!! I'm not caught up on the manga, so idk how much she shows up further on, but I wish there was more of her!
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): Hild! I know a lot of (probably cishet men) don't like her because she won't just forgive Throfinn, but I am weak for those arms and that menacing stare.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): Halfdan. Die.
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): Canute. I know, unpopular opinion, but i just hate his character progression.

*thinks about amihan ranting to thorkell for getting hurt after his duel with thorfinn (and for not letting her throw hands with the knife gremlin), and then gently placing a kiss underneath thorkell's injured eye*
