Green trousers part 3:

After getting the darts, pockets and crotch seam ironed, I moved on to sewing the side seams and inseams. I forgot to take process pictures of that part, but it was pretty straightforward anyway.

Next was the fly. I sewed buttonholes (by hand, because my machine’s buttonhole setting scares me) into one side of the facing, folded it to the inside and topstitched it down, then sewed buttons onto the other side. Luckily, I found enough buttons of the right size (and flat enough to not create bulk!) in my stash.

Instead of adding a waistband, I sewed twill tape to the outside of the waist as a reinforcement. I folded the fabric to the inside just below the tape and topstitched it down. I finished the hems with some green bias tape, topstitched on the outside and whip stitched on the inside. Lastly, I added the top button and belt loops.

Then came the most time-consuming phase of this project: hand-finishing the raw edges with a whip stitch. I forgot to take out some of my thread marking and basting stitches before I did that, so I ended up having to wrestle with those for a bit afterwards. I’m fairly certain there are no contrasting threads visible on the outside anymore, though…

And that’s that! The trousers are finished! All in all, I’m very pleased with how they turned out, though there are some things I would do differently.

Thanks for all the support! I wasn't expecting this project to get so popular. For this update I've made things much neater, they're organised by date first shown (hopefully) to see how her wardrobe has changed over time. Green trousers part 2: darts, pockets, etc.

part one

The first step after getting the pattern pieces cut out was sewing the darts in the back. I may end up needing to add small pleats to the front as well, but I'm not sure yet so I'll worry about it later... I hand sewed the darts into the main fabric first, then the lining, which I pressed and tacked down in the opposite direction. The lining side isn't perfect, but all I really care about is that they don't cause any puckering or visible bulk once everything is assembled. If they do, I'll still be able to redo them before finishing the waistband.

Next, I cut out my pocket pieces and faced the ones that will show on the outside. Then I got ahead of myself and sewed those onto the back body pieces. I had to undo that later.

I machine sewed the front and back crotch seams and basted down the seam allowances for ease of ironing. I made the mistake of basting both sides of the fly facing which, once again, I had to undo, as those are both meant to be on the same side. This will probably become a reoccurring theme...

Finally, I detached the incorrectly sewn pocket pieces, assembled the pockets, basted them to the front body pieces where they belong, and finished the pocket opening with a whip stitch. Now I'll be able to treat that as all one piece when sewing together the side seam. I also fixed the fly facing, so now both sides are folded to the left. I had to clip the right side just below the fly so the seam allowances would still open out to either side.

Now It'll be a few days before I can get my hands on an iron, but once I get all these finnicky seam allowances pressed down, I'll be able to move on to the second half of the project!
