"A Message of Love, Directly from My Heart unto the Universe (2022)," by internationally renowned artist Yayoi Kusama, is located in Grand Central Madison, on the Madison Concourse between 46th and 47th streets. Expanding upon Kusama's iconic "My Eternal Soul" series, the new glass mosaic artwork is an exploration of lines and forms, detailed with bold colors. At once abstract and figurative, the artwork highlights a variety of motifs for visitors to discover. They convey the messages of LOVE, UNIVERSE, PEACE, and OWE TO ALL MANKIND, which are central to Kusama's oeuvre. She hopes that the work will bring joy for those who encounter it as they pass through the incredible new space.
Kusama began the "My Eternal Soul" series in 2009. The paintings in the series feature the signature qualities of her "Infinity Net" paintings and echo the obsessive, recurring geometries of her decades-long output. An exploration of form, subject matter, and space, the compositions combine abstract and figurative elements that allude at once to microscopic and macroscopic universes
The permanent artwork, fabricated by Miotto Mosaics, measures 120' wide x 7' high, with approximately 875 square feet of glass mosaic. "A Message of Love, Directly from My Heart unto the Universe" is a heartfelt gift to New York City by the artist.

comparison of new (left) and old (right) maps of grand central madison. the new map is absolutely awful. it's over-stylized at the cost of detail and usability.

9/11 Memorial - New York
The 9/11 Memorial was the main ticket on the cards for the day. On a walking route, I would pass the Flatiron Building, Madison Square Park, Washington Square Park, Soho and more. Along the way taking a detour from Washington Square Park to visit the outdoor store REI (303 Lafayette). From REI, I cheated taking the Metro to 9/11 Memorial.  Still, it was a long day, I must have done close to 20km.…

Along the Hudson River This is simply a wonderful spot on the face of the earth—we’re north of Cold Spring, New York, along the Hudson River, at Breakneck Ridge. Metro North still stops here, mainly for the benefit of hikers who want to explore the rugged landscape in this area (known as the Hudson Highlands). The “station” stop is just south of where the first photograph was taken with a few trains making stops each way, each day on the weekend. The land mass visible behind the southbound train in the first image is called Pollepel Island, and the structure thereon is called Bannerman Castle. The second photograph was taken the same afternoon at the same location—but looking south. It shows a Metro North commuter train headed north, most likely headed for Poughkeepsie. Also visible in the image, across the river, is the dramatic and massive form of Storm King Mountain. The model of locomotive, seen in both photographs, is interesting as well—the EMD FL9 was a unit designed specifically to be used for New York’s Grand Central Terminal—the destination for these trains at the time. [I believe all Amtrak trains traveling the water-level route currently end up at Penn Station now.] This unique engine is diesel-electric but also has a pick-up “shoe” for the electrified third-rail. This way the diesel prime-mover could be shut off or at least idled when in the tunnels under Madison Avenue and in the bowels of the massive terminal itself. Two images by Richard Koenig; taken in August of 1988.

Note
I have a few questions,
1. Had Hercules ever served in the navy or marines?
2. What is the symbol on captain stars eyepatch and will you touch on how he lost his eye or arm?
3.can you give us the ages of the stars and zeros from oldest to youngest?
4. Do you plan on drawing the side characters of tugs such as Lillie lightship, scuttlebutt Pete or big Mickey?
1. hercules has never served in the navy. if you're looking at his hat, it was just a simple white hat with a blue band and black visor. he slightly modified it so it resembles captain star's. he was younger and used to look up to him highly. though as time passes, he slowly regrets it because of how time and time again it was proven the the navy is a blight on bigg city port and that captain star may not be as trustworthy as hercules made him out to be
2. the symbol on captain star's eyepatch is an anchor, tilted 45 degrees!
Tumblr media
captain star is a world war I veteran. as soon as the united states stepped down from its neutral position in the war (selective service act of 1917, the sinking of rms lusitania in 1915), captain star was sent to the british grand fleet to help out the allied powers. since the usa military joined in late, they didn't have any big encounters with the central powers, only ones with german u-boats in relation to the us navy.
during the atlantic ocean blockade efforts in late 1917 to early 1918, captain star lost his left arm from an explosion while he lost his right eye during a brief surface engagement with german troops who were piloting a u-boat in which one of them shot him in the eye.
3. here's their age list:
Captain Archibald Star: 54
Thomas “Ten Cents” Haddock: 18 Graham MacLachlan “Big Mac”: 38 David “OJ” Jones: 62 Hwang Dong-Ha “Top Hat”: 27 Benjamin “Warrior” Guttierez: 24 Herkules “Hercules” Simarmata: 32 Samuel “Sunshine” Madison: 18 Ravikumar “Grampus” Shankar: 35
Captain Maximus Zero: 54
Giuseppe “Zorran” vin Diesel: 31 Ismail “Zebedee” Saifullah: 36 Zakheus “Zak” Miller: 34 Jürgen “Zug” Mikelsaar: 26 Zip: 18
4. I do plan on drawing them someday! I already have a design for lillie in mind, but I'm currently more focused on drawing stuff related to the two fleets right now!

Since the 1980s, Kiki Smith has been known for her multidisciplinary work that explores embodiment and the natural world. Five individual mosaics by the acclaimed artist are located across two levels of Grand Central Madison. The glass mosaics, totaling over 1,400 square feet, were fabricated by Mayer of Munich, with whom Smith has been creating works over the last 25 years. The artwork builds on the motif of the natural world that Smith has explored for decades.
"River Light" greets riders entering the new terminal’s concourse from the historic Grand Central Terminal. The nearly 800-square-foot mosaic is inspired by the way sunlight glints on the surface of the East River, the threshold between Manhattan and Long Island. There are four mosaic murals located in arched node walls throughout the Mezzanine level: "The Water’s Way, " "The Presence," "The Spring," and "The Sound." These bring flora and fauna into the new terminal and conceptually relate with Grand Central and Long Island. Smith developed the images both visually and narratively by photographing the local landscape and animal life to portray quiet moments found in the Long Island landscape. These were then rendered in exquisite mosaic.

grand central madison is designed so fucking badly it's insane. you want to know how to connect from the LIRR to the subway? something a huge number of commuters do? you get off the train, climb a flight of stairs up to the LIRR area, and then you see the slow-moving ultra-wide escalator that is the size of 12 consecutive flights of stairs* (minus the landings that stairs would have... don't trip!). Run up that like your life depends on it, and try not to die. then at the top, you turn and run through the most bizarrely sloped maze in history, twisting around several directions before running something like six blocks through a tunnel, then run up another two flights of stairs, now it's time to "buy your subway ticket". now once you get in, you're in the home stretch, it's time to run down a dimmer, dirtier sloped hallway that at least doesn't seethe with hatred as much as the newer parts of the station (iykyk), and finally, at the end of that hallway, there is a simultaneously very wide and very claustrophobic room where you will eventually find the staircase down to the correct subway train. and then you can get on the train. Flights of stairs/equivalent: MORE THAN FIFTEEN, not counting ramps. And after all that you'll still be late for work <3 better luck next time <3
*this is the longest escalator in new york city.
