Jupiter’s Legacy: Andrew Horton on the Importance of Being Paragon
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article is presented by:
Despite the fact that his career is a fairly young one, Andrew Horton is being faced with dramatic challenges on Jupiter’s Legacy, not the least of which stems from the fact that his character, Brandon Sampson (aka Paragon) is the son of the world’s greatest heroes, the Utopian (Josh Duhamel) and Lady Liberty (Lesie Bibb). The good news is that he’s had no problem rising to the meta-human challenge.
Besides starring in the short films Ladies First and Breach, Horton made a guest appearance on the TV series Doctors and in the films It Came from the Desert and How to Talk to Girls at Parties. As he reveals in the following chat, he’s fully embracing the opportunity that Brandon and Jupiter’s Legacy is giving him.
WHO IS PARAGON?
NAME: Brandon Sampson
ALTER EGO: Paragon
POWERS AND ABILITIES: Telekinesis, which allows him to fly and move large objects; can survive in outer space; can project energy blasts from his eyes; super hearing
NEED TO KNOW: Son of Sheldon and Grace, brother to Chloe. In training to assume the mantle of The Utopian and become the new leader of The Union, he struggles to live up to his father’s mythic legend.
Den of Geek: As a relative newcomer, how are you handling being part of what could be a huge show?
Andrew Horton: Being an actor on any level opens you up to scrutiny, but when you’re on Netflix’s new superhero show, that’s definitely a bit of weight on the old shoulders. It’s intimidating, but also incredibly exciting.
What is your impression of Brandon and  what kind of journey in this first season do you feel he’s on?
Brandon in the comics is kind of like this petulant dick, basically, for lack of a better word. He’s completely disengaged with his father, still trying to be part of The Union and impress, but he keeps failing.
How does this affect him?
It just makes him angrier and more disillusioned with everything that his father stands for. The series basically sets up the backstory where he gets to that point. In it, he’s incredibly earnest, works really hard, and has still got these rose-tinted glasses on. But he’s still not living up to expectations, though he’s very much in training to take over the mantle of The Utopian.
This is a good time to be in a superhero show, as there’s so much out there and audiences are responding to it..
It’s super lucky as well that the market hasn’t become totally saturated by it, because there is so much content everywhere. It’s not like people get bored by this stuff, which could have happened. But if it’s good, it’s going to draw audiences in. I think what’s unique about our show is the fact that it’s a superhero show, but it really focuses on those family dynamics as well and the human relationships, aside from their superpowers. And I think that’s what kind of really drew me to the comics is seeing these damaged people, that it’s not all hunky dory and that they are actually going through a load of difficulties in their lives.
How does the show handle the fact that it has to take place over so many decades?
One of the biggest challenges we faced in season one, as I think any series does, is when you’ve got a massive world to build, you have to devote a lot of the time to that world-building within the series, so that people actually know what’s going on, if they haven’t read the source material beforehand. So that’s a big part of the first few episodes is really introducing all of these characters to the viewers, and then establishing this world of the older generation and the younger generation.
You’ve got the moments in the present and then you’ve got the flashbacks in the past. So it’s kind of telling that story, going back and forth and seeing why characters are one way how they’ve developed through time.
Brandon didn’t have a costume in the comics, but you do on the show. What’s that like?
The clothing choices for the show were very, very different in the comics. He wears black, he’s got this long hair, doesn’t look at all like a superhero, like his dad does. And then in the series, I’ve actually got this amazing super suit, which I was so stoked to wear. So there’s quite big differences, but I think at the heart of it, it’s Brandon and Sheldon’s story, which is still integral there.
The costumes were immense and imbue so much to the character without even having to try. You see the Superman suit and it’s so iconic. Not saying that this is iconic — I hope it will be — but what an amazing feeling of power.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
My favorite suit was the Utopian’s, because when you look really closely, it’s got all these very fine details of these kinds of celestial maps and things like that. And the costume team just knocked it out of the park. It was amazing, start to finish.

Saints’ Memorials and Feast Days of the Blessed Virgin Mary – 27 June
St Cyril of Alexandria (Optional Memorial)
Our Lady of Perpetual Succour:  The picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is painted on wood, with background of gold.   It is Byzantine in style and is supposed to have been painted in the thirteenth century.   It represents the Mother of God holding the Divine Child while the Archangels Michael and Gabriel present before Him the instruments of His Passion.   Over the figures in the picture are some Greek letters which form the abbreviated words Mother of God, Jesus Christ, Archangel Michael and Archangel Gabriel respectively.
It was brought to Rome towards the end of the fifteenth century by a pious merchant, who, dying there, ordered by his will that the picture should be exposed in a church for public veneration.   It was exposed in the church of San Matteo, Via Merulana, between Saint Mary Major and Saint John Lateran.   Crowds flocked to this church and for nearly three hundred years many graces were obtained through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin.   The picture was then popularly called the Madonna di San Matteo.   The church was served for a time by the Hermits of Saint Augustine, who had sheltered their Irish brethren in their distress.
These Augustinians were still in charge when the French invaded Rome, Italy in 1812 and destroyed the church.   The picture disappeared; it remained hidden and neglected for over forty years but a series of providential circumstances between 1863 and 1865 led to its discovery in an oratory of the Augustinian Fathers at Santa Maria in Posterula. The pope, Pius IX, who as a boy had prayed before the picture in San Matteo, became interested in the discovery and in a letter dated 11 Dececember 1865 to Father General Mauron, C.SS.R., ordered that Our Lady of Perpetual Succour should be again publicly venerated in Via Merulana and this time at the new church of Saint Alphonsus.    The ruins of San Matteo were in the grounds of the Redemptorist Convent.   This was but the first favour of the Holy Father towards the picture.   He approved of the solemn translation of the picture (26 April 1866) and its coronation by the Vatican Chapter (23 June 1867).   He fixed the feast as duplex secundae classis, on the Sunday before the Feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist and by a decree dated May 1876, approved of a special office and Mass for the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.   This favour later on was also granted to others.   Learning that the devotion to Our Lady under this title had spread far and wide, Pius IX raised a confraternity of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and Saint Alphonsus, which had been erected in Rome, to the rank of an arch-confraternity and enriched it with many privileges and indulgences.   He was among the first to visit the picture in its new home and his name is the first in the register of the arch-confraternity.
Two thousand three hundred facsimiles of the Holy Picture have been sent from Saint Alphonsus’s church in Rome to every part of the world.   At the present day not only altars but churches and dioceses (e.g. in England, Leeds and Middlesbrough; in the United States, Savannah) are dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour.   In some places, as in the United States, the title has been translated Our Lady of Perpetual Help but generally Catholics throughout the rest of the world use the proper title.Patronage: • The Redemptorist Order, Haiti 1 Arch and 7 Diocese around the world, 3 cities in various parts of the world.

Above is the Icon prior to the Restoration in 1866
Mother of God of Gietrzwald:   Our Lady appeared for the first time to Justyna Szafrynska (13) when she was returning home with her mother after having taken an examination prior to receiving the First Holy Communion.   The next day, Barbara Samulowska (12) also saw the ‘Bright Lady’ sitting on the throne with Infant Christ among Angels over the maple tree in front of the church while reciting the rosary.   The girls asked “Who are you?” she answered, “I am the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception!”. “What do you require, Mother of God?”, they asked, the answer was:  “I wish you recite the rosary everyday!”  There were 13 more apparitions from 27 June 1877 to 16 September 1877. 2 February 1970 – Pope Paul VI elevated the church in Gietrzwald to the rank of Basilica Minor.
11 September 1977 – One hundredth anniversary of Our Lady apparitions in Gietrzwald. Masses of faithful gathered with the representatives of the Episcopal Conference of Poland headed by Cardinal Karol Wojtyla who prayed:  “Remember, the Blessed Virgin Mary, no one has heard that anybody who has entrusted his needs to your maternal kindness has been disappointed.   Therefore, full of trust in face of pleading might of your heart, we are laying down in your generous hands, the health of your servant and our Primate.   Look at his loyalty and devotion, with which he has been serving you for many years as priest and bishop and restore in full his strength so that he may see your glory in the days of the jubilee of the basilica of Our Lady of Czestochowa and direct the Church in Poland for many years.”   The primate who was too ill to attend recovered.
11 September 1977 – During the ceremonies, the decree of the Warmian Bishop, Jozef Drzazga, was read approving the devotion to Our Lady’s apparitions in Gietrzwald as not contradicting Christian faith and morality and recognizing the miraculous and divine nature of the events.

Martyrs Killed Under Communist Regimes in Eastern Europe: Among the thousands of Christians murdered by various Communist regimes in their hatred of the faith, there were 25 members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and Russian Byzantine Catholic Church, priests, bishops, sisters and lay people, whose stories are sufficiently well documented that we know they were murdered specifically for their faith in eastern Europe and whose Causes for Canonization were opened. Their Causes were combined and they were beatified together. They have separate memorials but are remembered together today. They are –

15 Silk and Satin Products That Help Protect Hair from Damage
New Post has been published on https://www.claritymakeupartistry.com/15-silk-and-satin-products-that-help-protect-hair-from-damage/
15 Silk and Satin Products That Help Protect Hair from Damage
It doesn’t matter how long or how short your hair is, if you want it to thrive, a certain level of investment is required. There are the baseline products, like shampoo, conditioner and deep conditioner. From there are more tailored picks, like an everyday styler or hot tool. Among these and the techniques you practice day to day, hair care can admittedly feel like a full-time job. However, before you try replicating the 20-step routines touted by vloggers who may not even share your curl pattern, identify the smaller habits you can begin at a moment’s notice.
One of them is adding silk or satin to your bed or hair accessories. By now, you’ve probably been told that both fabrics are a godsend for your mane, but do you know exactly why? While cotton can absorb moisture, silk and satin do the exact opposite. The smooth fabrics actually retain your hair’s natural oils and allow the strands to lie on top of it without causing friction and, ultimately, a tangled mess. Plus, there’s just something about a silk or satin accessory that instantly elevates an otherwise basic ensemble to new heights.
And there you have it: a small change that reaps big benefits, like more hydrated, healthy and easy-to-style hair. Before you pick up a frumpy bonnet from the beauty supply, check out 11 satin- or silk-lined products that are easier on the eyes (but still get the job done). They may just inspire a newfound love for hats and scarves, just in time for winter.

DETROIT | The Latest: Aretha Franklin interred at Detroit cemetery
New Post has been published on https://is.gd/cOo3R1
DETROIT | The Latest: Aretha Franklin interred at Detroit cemetery
DETROIT— The Latest on the funeral for soul legend Aretha Franklin (all times local): 9:50 p.m.
Aretha Franklin is in her final resting place.
The casket of the Queen of Soul was interred Friday evening in a mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, just over two weeks after she died of pancreatic cancer at age 76.
Franklin’s loved ones arrived at the cemetery after a 10-mile processional through her hometown from Greater Grace Temple, where an eight-hour service of songs, sermons and speeches was held earlier in the day.
Woodlawn is also home to the graves of Franklin’s father, two more of his daughters, and civil rights luminary Rosa Parks.
The interment ends the formal mourning for Franklin, who was dressed in four different outfits for open-casket viewings in the days leading up to the funeral.
She was buried in a gold dress and sparkling pumps. ___ 6:45 p.m.
Stevie Wonder wowed with his harmonica skills and then brought the remaining mourners at Aretha Franklin’s lengthy funeral to their feet with a moving version of “As.”
The choir, Franklin’s family, preachers and remaining guests swayed as Wonder played the classic tune in honor of his old friend. “The reason we are here today is love,” Wonder said in remarks.
Before Wonder performed, Gladys Knight sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” As Franklin’s coffin left the church, Jennifer Holliday sang “Climbing Higher Mountains.”
Others who performed over the eight-hour ceremony included Faith Hill, Fantasia Barrino, Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande and Chaka Khan.
“God bless, Aretha,” Wonder said at the end of his song. “The joy is in knowing that she will have an eternal life of bliss.” ___ 5:15 p.m.
Former NBA star Isiah Thomas eulogized Aretha Franklin as someone who offered her advice and friendship and someone who “shifted the universe.”
He laughed that in the week since Franklin died, her music is being sung everywhere, forcing people in restaurants to stop eating and spontaneously dance.
Thomas recalled how, as a young man, Franklin’s music soothed his mother when the family faced challenges, and later smiled when the soul icon would attend his Detroit Pistons games and sit near his mom.
Said Thomas: “She found a way to inspire all of us with hope, love and dreams through her music. Her voice found a way to help this nation soothe and deal with its troubled past.” ___ This story corrects the spelling of Isiah Thomas. ___ 4:40 p.m.
Record giant Clive Davis remembered Aretha Franklin as a woman with a thirst for knowledge, as a “true Renaissance woman” — and one with a streak of perfectionism.
Davis, who oversaw Franklin’s music for decades, including such later hits as “Who’s Zoomin’ Who?” and “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” said once Franklin committed to a project, she’d go into “Aretha mode,” privately rehearsing and preparing so intensely that it was rare for her to need more than a few takes in the studio.
Said Davis: “Aretha’s voice will be influencing others, literally, for centuries to come.”
Davis recalled the time Franklin surprised him when he was getting a lifetime achievement award in New York by showing up onstage in a tutu.
“There was the Queen of Soul, accompanied by members of the City Center Ballet Company, she doing well-rehearsed pirouettes and dancing with most impressive agility and dignity. It was wonderful.” ___ 3:55 p.m.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson told Aretha Franklin to “sleep on” and “I’ll see you in the morning.”
Jackson, who has Parkinson’s disease and is in his late 70s, spoke slowly as he stood in front of the gathered mourners at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit on Friday.
He led them in a prayer of thanks for Aretha and her minister father, asking that God make all in the church “better, not bitter,” by the time the day is over.
Jackson said “Aretha’s not lost, we know where she is.” He praised her for the funding she gave to The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and for singing through tear gas during the civil rights fight.
He said, however, that it was a shame that the lines to mourn famous people are long, but lines to vote are so short, lamenting that President Donald Trump won Michigan by so few votes.
Jackson said if anyone who leaves the funeral and isn’t registered to vote “dishonors Aretha.” ___ 2:30 p.m.
Bill Clinton memorialized Aretha Franklin as a woman with “breathtaking talent” who kept on charming audiences despite her illness.
The former president recalled being an “Aretha groupie” all his life and being thrilled to meet her backstage at her last public performance, a benefit in Harlem for Elton John’s AIDS charity last year. She was “gaunt” but went on to perform for 45 minutes.
“How you doing, baby?” she asked him. “I’m doing better now,” Clinton replied.
The former president also asked the audience to forgive him, saying he was happy that Franklin’s casket was still open when he arrived because he just had to see what she was wearing.
Clinton said, “I wonder what my friend has got on today. I wanted to see what the girl was carrying out,” to a wave of laughs and claps from the crowd. Franklin was wearing a gold gown, her fourth outfit of the week.
He ended his time by playing Franklin’s “Think” on his iPhone into the mic. “It’s the key to freedom!” Clinton said. ___ 1:40 p.m.

“Nothing sounded better to me than my grandmother’s voice,” said Victorie. “Her voice brought peace.”
Grandson Jordan directed his remarks directly to Aretha, frequently stopping to fight back tears. “I’m sad today, because I’m losing my friend, but I know the imprint she left on this world can never be removed. You showed the world God’s love, and there’s nothing more honorable.”
Aretha’s son, Edward, sang “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” by Marvin Gaye. ___ 1:10 p.m.
Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush didn’t attend Aretha Franklin’s funeral but they sent messages to honor the Queen of Soul.

Organizers of Aretha Franklin’s funeral insist it will be a spirit-filled service, not a show. Yet there’s no denying the star-power attending the Queen of Soul’s final send-off.
The speakers at Friday’s invitation-only funeral at Detroit’s Greater Grace Temple include former President Bill Clinton, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Smokey Robinson. Singers include Steve Wonder, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Faith Hill and Chaka Khan.
Greater Grace’s Bishop Charles Ellis III says he wants all — even the famous — to leave with a “spiritual awakening.” Still, the get-down and uplift can certainly coexist.

Kamasi Washington
Jazz fans (purists and those who appreciate crossover crystal clear sounds and piercing notes that thrill) are likely to make a beeline for these exciting acts: Saxophonist, producer and composer Kamasi Washington (USA) and his release The Epic shook up the jazz critics’ pick lists in 2015 and won the 2016 American Music prize, earning new fans across the world in the process; Grammy-nominated songstress Andra Day (USA) whose song Rise Up has been adopted as an anthem for change throughout the world; vocalist, pianist, composer and music educator, and two-time Metro Music Award winner Nomfundo Xaluva (SA); and the multi-award winning saxophonist, composer and arranger Buddy Wells, who will lead his own band in a sensitive yet blistering set as the Buddy Wells Sextet (SA).

Those seeking the ancestral roots of jazz and hip hop in African music will be captivated by these artists, offering music from the deserts of Mali, Morocco and the Kalahari: Jokko is a supergroup of African instrumentalists that brings together five top-ranking players of traditional instruments, all fluent in the modern languages of pop, dance and jazz. Renowned balafon (wooden xylophone) player Aly Keita, stringed instrument (guembri and ghayta) player Mehdi Nassouli, Foulane Bouhssine “the Mozart of the ribab”, bassist Childo Thomas and, Senegalese drummer Sega Seck.

“The CTIJF has reached a point where it is known to deliver a good product. This was evidenced by the sale of tickets even before we made the first artist announcement this year,” commented Billy Domingo. Thanking loyal fans for their support, Domingo went on to say that festival-goers’ faith has been justified in what he dubs as “one of the most potent socially conscious musical line-ups ever staged in South Africa, and one that has exceptional cachet.” It is clearly not to be missed.
Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Alderman Patricia de Lille concurs, “Our City can boast of many jazz icons who have united us around our common love for music and the unique sounds of Cape Town jazz. Those sounds are deeply woven into both our past and our present, and they continue to bring us together. The CTIJF is not just a local favourite, but has rightfully taken its place as one of the primary festivals of its kind on a global scale. Every year it gives us the opportunity to consolidate our position as the events capital of Africa, and brings a national and international audience to our world-class local acts.”
The Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa, pointed out that: “The Cape Town International Jazz Festival, now in its 18th edition, continues to attract the best musicians from South Africa and abroad; and the musical collaborations that result from this rich engagement produce music that captures the cultural imagination of our people, builds continental cohesion and speaks to the world at large.”
