Trekmatch! Number 1: Year of Hell vs 2004's The Phantom of the Opera

This is the first installment of a new weekly post series I'm going to be doing in which I pit a randomly selected Trek episode against a randomly selected Oscar/Golden Globe best picture nominee. Let's get right to it! PLOT SUMMARIES Star Trek: Voyager - "Year of Hell" In this two-part fourth season episode we meet a brand new character, Annorax, an alien trying to fuck up some time shit until his wife comes back to life. He's... tortured I guess, and played pretty well by Kurtwood Smith, of That 70s Show and also a couple other Trek things. Of course this is not Star Trek: Annorax, so we catch up with Voyager, going about their merry way when a time wave hits them and changes a peaceful hangout into a battle not going Voyager's way. Anyway, the year keeps getting worse and worse as Annorax zaps more and more planets until Janeway rams Voyager into his time ray, undoing the events of the whole episode. Ok, I mean I liked What If...? comics as a kid, but it feels like a cheat here. More on that in a second. The Phantom of the Opera This 2004 Joel Schumacher movie is an adaptation of the classic Broadway play by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which was an adaptation of the 1912 novel by Gaston Leroux (I looked up that second part). It was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy, ultimately losing to Sideways. It begins with a spooky chandelier being sold at auction, and then bam! We are transported back to a simpler time when phantoms of operas would hang out and harass and kidnap opera stars and take them into their turd lairs in the sewer beneath Paris. This particular phantom loves a soprano named Christine Daae, but she doesn't exactly love him back even though he's TOTALLY A NICE GUY. There's kidnapping and angry mobs and a chandelier falls down at one point. Oh, and great classic musical numbers of course like I even had to mention. REACTIONS "Year of Hell" is an episode(s) a lotta people love, but the time "science" at the end that basically nullifies the events of the entire two-parter is like a character waking up at the end of a story and realizing it was alllll a dream. I mean, fiction in any medium is already a dream, you don't gotta add another layer of artifice! There are a lot of great moments though - I liked seeing Voyager get more and more messed up as the "year" progresses, which is something I feel should have happened in the show. Janeway is working at maximum frazzle, too, as things get more and more dire. Solving the mystery of the time scoop is sort of pleasing, and Kurtwood Smith is terrific as the tortured guest villain of the week, too. Ultimately though I just can't get past the erasure of the events at the end. The Phantom of the Opera was the first Broadway show I ever saw. Prior to that, I'd only seen high school musical productions, which, no offense to your personal high school intended, are universally abysmal. Anyway, I remember sitting there looking at the blanketed chandelier on stage when the play starts thinking "oh ok I guess that's a rock in the phantom's cave or whatever," but when the lights came on and the chandelier rose to the ceiling while the theme started blasting it blew my fucking mind! The movie though? Joel Schumacher seemed like the right person to apply his wild palette to this Depeche Mode gothfest of a play, but it winds up falling flat a lot of the time. Part of that is that Gerard Butler is a bad singer, and part is because Schumacher just uses too many quick cuts - the play is phenomenal and that's just one angle the whole time! It's probably unfair of me to judge the movie based on the amazing play. Maybe if "Year of Hell" had been a smash Broadway hit first this would even the odds a little. SIMILARITIES In each story the villain's love of a woman drives him to do questionable things, such as kidnapping, murder, vandalism, and time genocide. At least the woman Annorax loved actually like reciprocated those feelings not that wiping countless races from history is a valid action. If, like, Voyager is the opera house then it kinda burns up at the end. Or is Voyager the chandelier? I'm reaching here! VERDICT These are both mediocre but slight edge to "Year of Hell" because it didn't besmirch the memory of an awesome play you should all go see whenever you get a chance. Next week is DS9's "In the Pale Moonlight" vs. 1954's Carmen Jones! Please leave feedback if you want, or dissenting/assenting opinions!
