Me dormí bien! I had a good night of sleep! It was the first time since August that I had that feeling of: ahhh, it’s a Saturday but I have to work... you know that feeling?
The Museo was quiet and we were the only ones from the school, however, a series of tourists wandered in throughout the morning for chocolate-making classes and to use the pool. It was peaceful. Here’s an example of some of the art found in the museo–it’s a collection of art from all over Latin America. This is the pared de Guatemala:
Arleen seemed extra tired and maybe hadn’t prepared as much as the other days. I understand. Never the less, we had great discussions as always and finally got to tenses (I know, it’s only been 3 days, but hey, I’m antsy). As we talked about the differences between ser y estar, we got on the subject of prostitutes and whether online services made it safer or not for the sex worker. Then, we had an eye-opening conversation on the word, gordo. Siempre estás gordito? she asked me. I understood what she was asking and that she wasn’t calling me fat, but a little chubby. I still felt my face get flushed and a bit ashamed. I laughed–which I have learned this past year is my way of dealing with uncomfortable discussions–and explained that the word fat, in the US, has such negative connotations that we don’t casually call people fat or a little fat, unless we’re intending to be harsh. As we discussed this cultural difference it dawned on me how much the dichotomy of skinny and fat has impacted my life. Where did the sense of shame come from? What if we lived in a society that didn’t body shame?
