I'm back after a short break, and having had a particularly sad, tough day yesterday, I cannot think of a better book to share with you all today than one of my all-time favourite tough day picture books: Linda Smith's "Mrs. Biddlebox: Her Bad Day ... And What She Did About It!" (2002) Inspired by the late Smith's own fight with cancer, Mrs. Biddlebox is anything but depressing. Instead, it tells (in one of the most utterly glorious read-aloud rhyme schemes I've ever encountered) the story of a woman who wakes up most decidedly on the wrong side of everything, and decides to roll up the WHOLE DARN DAY, squish it, knead it, pummel it, subdue it, and bake it into something wholly better. It is a story about the power we have to take lousy circumstances and wrestle them into submission through sheer force of will and a refusal to be brought down, and it is powerful, beautiful, and most importantly, FUN! Marla Frazee's gorgeous illustrations won the Golden Kite for this one for good reason. You'll be transfixed! Read this one to your kid who is struggling. Our very first picture book biography recommendation, and it's a doozy! Today, in honour of Women's Equality Day, I'm recommending Cheryl Bardoe's "Nothing Stopped Sophie: The Story of Unshakable Mathematician Sophie Germain" (2018), the story of the first woman to win a Grand Prize from France's Royal Academy of Sciences. 📚📙📗 Great for a slightly older audience (6+), this is the story of the inimitable Sophie, a young woman in the 18th century fascinated by numbers and all that could be done with them, and determined to use that love to accomplish great things, despite constant discouragement from everyone around her, including her own parents. Stubborn and brilliant, Sophie forged her own path despite them all. THIS BOOK HAS EVERYTHING! From a mirthfully eccentric relative, to wonderful vocabulary ("I'm doomed," Lester explained, "to a life of dreadful sweaters."), to the Silliest sweaters you've ever seen, glaring hilariously out of author/illustrator K.G. Campbell's fantastically exaggerated drawings. "Lester's Dreadful Sweaters" is truly the perfect read-aloud. 📚📙📗 Any kid who has ever been driven to agonizing distraction by a situation that seems out of their control (so, all kids, LOL)--in this case a well-meaning relative and her horribly embarrassing gifts--will relate to poor Lester and his quandary. what to do.
