The number of Black quarterbacks has soared in the NFL over the past 25 years, and it was only a matter of time before two of them faced each other in the Super Bowl.

Sunday’s championship game will pit the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes against the Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts. Only seven Black quarterbacks have played in a Super Bowl, and just three—including Mahomes—have won. That a record 11 NFL teams had Black starting quarterbacks on opening day of the current season suggests that matchups like this year’s will soon be commonplace. But the fact that no such game has taken place before Super Bowl LVII underscores the plight of the Black quarterback for most of the NFL’s century-long history.

Even though most NFL athletes are Black, most teams have been slow to put Black men in a position to call plays. The Eagles, to their credit, have been more willing to offer opportunities than other teams. “I think about all of the [Black] quarterbacks that came through Philly: Randall Cunningham, Rodney Peete, Donovan McNabb, Mike Vick,” Hurts told reporters during a pre–Super Bowl media session. “This franchise, the history we have of African American quarterbacks—that speaks for itself. I told those guys I want to carry that torch for them.”

Like Black Americans in general, Black players in the NFL have long struggled to have their talents and aspirations taken seriously. In 1920, Fritz Pollard became the first Black quarterback in what was then known as the American Professional Football Association. In his rookie season, Pollard led the Akron Pros to the league championship. But in 1934, the NFL banned Black players at the initiative of the former Washington owner George Preston Marshall, who once said, “We’ll start signing Negroes when the Harlem Globetrotters start signing whites.” The ban remained in place for 12 years.

When the NFL reintegrated in 1946, the prevailing assumption was that Black athletes weren’t intelligent enough to play quarterback. Run and tackle? Yes. Be the face of a franchise and give direction to other men? No.

Woke is het hoogste stadium van kapitalisme

De term woke zou aanduiden dat iemand zich bewust is van sociale en politieke kwesties, zoals ongelijkheid en onrechtvaardigheid, en zich actief engageert om deze ongelijkheid te bestrijden. Het probleem is dat dit engagement geen eindpunt heeft. Woke wil in elke interactie sociale onrechtvaardigheid ontdekken. Deze obsessieve, wantrouwende en moreel verontwaardigde houding heeft tot gevolg dat iedere (vermeende) ongelijkheid gevoelens van verongelijktheid aanwakkert. Al worden we in absolute zin meer gelijk gemaakt, dan nóg nemen afgunst en onverdraagzaamheid toe omdat de kleine verschillen worden uitvergroot om het activisme te voeden. Bij een nadere analyse van deze ideologie, blijkt bovendien dat woke een marketingstrategie is, die juist aanwakkert wat het claimt te bestrijden.

De paradox is dat ‘woke’ pretendeert tegenstand te bieden aan de ongelijkheid die wordt veroorzaakt door de kapitalistische productiewijze, maar tegelijk de ultieme belichaming en voortzetting is van deze productiewijze. Want nu het individu is losgetrokken uit alle hechtende banden (het economisch gilde is ontbonden, vandaag volgen de kerk en het vaderland – zelfs het familieverband staat onder druk) worden nieuwe identiteiten aangedragen en gecommercialiseerd om deze leegte te vullen. De maatschappelijke betrokkenheid wordt uit de gemeenschap weggezogen en overgeheveld naar identitaire consumptieproducten. Een mens met een ‘dunne’ identiteit hunkert naar consumeerbare symbolen om een eigen identiteit mee uit te drukken.

In Nederland heeft onlangs Laurens Buijs, docent aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, dit fenomeen op de kaart gezet. Sinds hij werd gecanceld wegens zijn kritiek op ‘non-binariteit’, eist hij veel aandacht op. Buijs profileert zich als een grote klokkenluider, wat helaas het werk van anderen overschaduwt. Mensen als Paul Cliteur werkten decennia in stilte, onder aanhoudende tegenwerking en dagelijkse laster in de wandelgangen. Rechtse academici en cultuurmakers kampen al véél langer met linkse intolerantie. Zij betalen er een grote persoonlijke prijs voor om de toorts van de Westerse cultuurcanon brandende te houden, doch krijgen – omdat zij geen linkse achtergrond hebben zoals Laurens Buijs – van media geen kans om hierop de aandacht te vestigen.

Naast het negatieve effect van deze overschaduwing, is de impact van woke ook catastrofaal op het niveau van de individuele identiteit. Woke zet namelijk aan tot identificatie met outsiders als een ‘way out’ ten aanzien van persoonlijke tekortkomingen en maatschappelijk falen. In plaats van te onderzoeken wat je kunt verbeteren op een persoonlijk niveau, worden mensen verleid om te verzinken in: “Ik kom niet aan de bak omdat ik een andere huidskleur heb, een andere seksuele geaardheid heb” – vul het verder maar in. Woke conditioneert mensen om de wereld door de lens van minderheidskenmerken te ervaren: daarmee wordt iedere tegenslag in het leven een bewijs van discriminatie. Die slachtofferidentiteit wordt vervolgens aangemoedigd in subculturen die sterk worden vermarket. 

Een ander voorbeeld zijn de ‘digitale nomades’. Dikwijls profileren zij zich als progressieve kosmopolieten die de wereld ontdekken en de corporate bureaucratieën in de Westerse wereld ontvluchten. Vaak belanden zij in landen waar het leven aanzienlijk goedkoper is, wat weer nieuwe vormen van economische afhankelijkheid schept. In Zuid-Afrika zitten er veel wereldburgers en globetrotters in goed beveiligde laptopcafé’s. Ondanks alle progressieve voornemens verwezenlijkt dit nieuwe vormen van segregatie.

Ook transseksualiteit is een voorbeeld. Iemand zou kunnen denken dat geslachtsveranderingen een uitweg bieden aan burgerlijke normstellende kaders, die zouden bepalen wat ‘mannelijkheid’ en ‘vrouwelijkheid’ zijn. De praktijk is echter dat transseksualiteit het lichaam als een winstobject onderwerpt aan de medische en farmaceutische industrie. Die industrie heeft er een financieel belang bij om verwarring en onzekerheid te zaaien over aangeboren geslachtelijke identiteiten. Hiernaast speelt het fenomeen ‘drag queens’, wat een commercialisering is van vrouwelijkheid. Die tonnen aan glitters, make-up en dramatische outfits zijn een hypercommerciële overdrijving van de vrouwelijke identiteit. 

Het maskeren van persoonlijke tekortkomingen door ze te verbinden aan de woke-ideologie, gaat een perverse symbiose aan met het kapitalisme waar woke zogezegd tegen rebelleert. Want het mediakapitaal bombardeert ons 24/7 met YouTubers die in villa’s wonen omdat zij rijk werden met bijvoorbeeld nagellak opdoen voor een webcam. De onuitgesproken vraag die met dit impulsenbombardement voortdurend meekomt, luidt: “Als zij rijk kan worden met malle filmpjes, waarom woon jij dan niet in een villa? Je hebt toch gestudeerd?” Hier zien we een perverse symbiose van kapitalistische prestatiedrang en identitaire onzekerheden. Het kapitalisme wekt een existentiële twijfel op het meritocratische vlak, die daarna een tribale uiting krijgt via de woke identiteitspolitiek. Daarin voorziet het kapitalisme ook weer. Enter de Che Guevara shirts, de Palestijnse sjaals, regenboogvlaggen en regenboog polspandjes. 

Door zichzelf ‘woke’ te noemen en zich te profileren als een onderneming die strijdt voor sociale rechtvaardigheid en gelijkheid, hopen bedrijven meer klanten te lokken en hun imago te verbeteren. Dit heet ‘woke-washing’. Bedrijven en merken profileren zichzelf graag als woke om uit te venten dat ze zich inzetten voor maatschappelijke kwesties zoals sociale rechtvaardigheid en gelijkheid. Dit varieert van het steunen van bepaalde goede doelen tot het aanbieden van producten die ‘duurzaam’ of ‘ethisch verantwoord’ zouden zijn. 

Hopelijk is de keerzijde van deze insteek nu duidelijk. Want het is een paradox dat de woke beweging – die zogenaamd opkwam om te strijden tegen de excessen van het kapitalisme en andere vormen van onderdrukking – gelijktijdig wordt gebruikt als een marketingtrend om winsten te maximaliseren en de consumptie te bevorderen. Het benoemen van de problematische aspecten van deze trend, wijst erop dat woke inderdaad hét hoogtepunt van kapitalisme is, aangezien woke bijdraagt aan de commercialisering van sociale rechtvaardigheid.

7 Celebrities Who Disappeared and We Still Don’t Know Where They Are

Can you imagine how hard it is to pull off a good act of vanishing? VERY hard. Just ask Steven Leung, who tried to make it look like he’d died during 9/11. Spoiler, that didn’t work. And now can you imagine someone like Beyonce just disappearing into thin air? That seems impossible. Yet, sometimes it happens.

Scott Smith

Scott Smith was a founding member of the band Loverboy but on November 30, 2000, he mysteriously disappeared at sea.

Smith, his girlfriend, and their two friends went sailing after Loverboy’s concert in Vancouver, B.C. When they were nearing San Francisco, the weather got stormy with gigantic waves. One of them knocked Smith of the vessel and into the water.

“We turned back around but couldn’t find any of the debris or cushions or the man-overboard pole,” said his friend Bill Ellis. Coast Guards and private searches couldn’t find him. His body was never found.

Rico Harris

In 2000, Rico Harris played basketball for a very famous team the Harlem Globetrotters but because of his drinking addiction he couldn’t pursue this career and went on to work as a security guard. In 2014, he was fired from there for drunkenness. When he left his mom’s house in LA and went to Seattle and stay with his girlfriend, he vanished somewhere along State Route 16 near Sacramento.

His backpack and phone were found on the roadside, but he was nowhere to be seen. Days after his disappearance people were reporting sightings of a giant person walking alongside State Route 16. Human footprints were found in the sand but not Harris.

Fan Bingbing

Fan Bingbing is a Chinese A-list celebrity, one of the few Chinese actresses to make it to the international market. But in 2018 her movie contracts leaked onto social media and it turned out that she’d been using fake contacts to avoid paying taxes. And on July 1, she disappeared.

People think that the authorities reeducating her this way and also show other stars the consequences they could be facing. Later in October, she released an apology on her social media and the Chinese authorities stated that she would be paying a fine. Nevertheless, she still has not been seen in public.

Bison Dele

Bison Dele whose real name is Brian Williams was a basketball player who was famously odd. When he quit basketball he was seen firing off bazookas into the desert in Lebanon, and then wandering through Asia, living as some sort of rich hobo.

In 2002, when he was in Australia, he learned to sail, bought himself a boat named the Hakuna Matata and decided to sail from Tahiti to Hawaii. He, his girlfriend, Serena Karlan, the ship’s captain, Bertran Saldo, and Dele’s older brother, Miles Dabord were on board but they never made it to Hawaii. Everyone but Dabord vanished at sea.

Dabord was arrested in Phoenix two months later trying to buy gold with his brother’s money. When he was released on bail, he committed suicide via insulin overdose. Supposedly he was prone to violence and envied his brother’s success.

Oscar Zeta Acosta

Chicano activist Oscar Zeta Acosta relentlessly consumed pills, hallucinogens, and drunk alcohol in huge quantities. In May 1974, he went to his family home in Mexico and just vanished. His friend Hunter S. Thompson spent years searching for him and later claimed that he was probably killed in a drug hit or a political assassination. However, Acosta’s body was never found.

Richey Edwards

A rhythm guitarist and lyricist of Manic Street Preachers Richey Edwards was a mid-1990s British rock idol whom The Guardian called “a lightning rod of sorts for adolescent angst.” He was handsome, moody, and has a talent for writing lyrics about depression.

In February 1995 he disappeared from his hotel room and his car was found abandoned near the Severn Bridge. In 2008 he was legally declared dead but his body was never found.

Jim Sullivan

In March 1975, Jim Sullivan was heading to Nashville but he never made it there. His car was found abandoned in the desert outside Santa Rosa, New Mexico and his clothes, wallet, and guitar were all found in a nearby motel. One of his friends said that if Sullivan was planning to vanish, he would’ve never left his guitar behind.
