Day 338 of 365 Photo Challenge.  The William Whiteley Warehouse.  Campaign to save whisky warehouse in Scotland once used by American Mafia during Prohibition.  Posted by Gangsters Inc. on January 18, 2019 at 9:29am. By David Amoruso. Now just a dilapidated façade, once the place was booming. The William Whiteley Warehouse in Glasgow, Scotland, secretly shipped thousands of cases of Scottish whisky to American bootleggers during Prohibition. Back then, quality booze sold for top dollar in the United States, and bootleggers with international connections made a killing buying their alcohol in the United Kingdom and shipping it to the U.S. – often via a detour through Canada. Crime boss Arnold Rothstein was one of the first with the eye and pocket to finance such trips abroad. One of his pupils, Mafia boss Frank Costello, followed in his footsteps. The New York bootlegger was loved by his associates. “He was a man of his word,” a Canadian smuggler stated. “The guys liked him because he had money to spend and you could trust him. He had the kind of reputation where he could order 8,000 cases of Scotch for delivery in six months, and you’d be sure he’s show up and pay you off on the dot.” The place where much of Costello’s booze originated from was the William Whiteley Warehouse in Glasgow.  Campaigners looking after the Scottish city’s historic heritage now call for the restoration of the old warehouse. Scotch tycoon John Mcilvogue told The Scottish Sun that: “It’s a hidden gem with an incredible history that should be preserved for future generations.” The idea is to put a new building behind the crumbling façade, which they have started.  #glasgow #scotland #peoplemakeglasgow #visitglasgow #photooftheday #glasgow2019 #photography #365daychallenge #williamwhiteleywarehouse #warehouse #facade #ghostsign #glasgowhistory #mafia #whiskywarehouse #prohibition #jameswattstreet (at James Watt Street) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5qkU92BPRD/?igshid=7pacc4vlzb9e

Day 213 of 365 Photo Challenge. Tower of the Winds, Govan Road, Mavisbank Road, 1894, John Burnet, Son & Campbell. Hydraulic Pump House, the former Prince's Dock Hydraulic Power Station. Romanesque corbelled cornice atop tall pump room. Castellated tower, another water accumulator, with original hydraulic equipment. Stump, a mere third, of the octagonal brick chimney, crowned with red ashlar sculpted frieze of the 'Four Winds'. Converted to office use, c.2005. Taken from "Greater Glasgow: An Illustrated Architectural Guide", by Sam Small, 2008. Published by the Rutland Press http://www.rias.org.uk It is located at the former Plantation Quay and Princes' Dock Basin. The Princes' Dock Basin was the largest on the River Clyde when it was opened by the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1900. It ceased to be used as a commercial dock by the Clyde Port Authority in the 1970s as the volume of Shipping using the Upper Clyde declined with the onset of containerization. The site was later used for the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988. The former electric generating station and pumping house, "Four Winds" which was used to pump water between the rotundas and generate power for the electric cranes still stands and is now home to a consultant engineers and radio station. The name 'Pacific Quay' has no historical significance, as it was created simply as a marketing enterprise following the land being reclaimed for commercial use after the Garden Festival closure. It did not reflect the site as a departure point for ships bound for the Pacific Rim. #glasgow #scotland #peoplemakeglasgow #visitglasgow #photooftheday #glasgow2019 #photography #365daychallenge #fourwindstower @frame_group #framegroup #pumpingstation #pacificdockbasin #glasgowhistory #clydeport #clydenavigationtrust #riverclyde (at Glasgow, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0onV3ZBBxN/?igshid=o97ffyg5sjeu
