I was so happy to see you grace my tl again - if only for a few posts. I miss your given metas and would LOVE to hear your take on syh's Straight and Parade and any predictions you might have for Umi e!

Thanks for the ask! It has been a while! I was going to do a proper analysis of the songs once I've seen the mix movie but I thought I might share some initial observations for Straight!

EASTER EGGS in SYH's STRAIGHT

Mafuyu's key in C minor, the relative minor key. The song is in Eb major, the relative major key. It's also what I call the sunshine key (Uenoyama's key) ☀️ which is the same key as all the songs on the Given mini-album release.

Chorus 0:22 has the same chord progression as the first part of Fuyunohanashi, which can indicate that Hiiragi and Shizu are also trying their best to heal from Yuki. Seriously, try singing the chorus of Fuyunohanashi on top of Straight's first chorus, they literally layer perfectly on top of each other!!!

CHORDS ARE SO INTERESTING HERE

Chord progression diverges from Fuyunohanashi in the second part of the chorus 0:41 to go from VI -> VII -> I, which is the same tiers di picardie chordal progression as Kizuato's (Given OP) ending as well as Yorugaakeru!!! This chord progression finishes in major to show that the boys are healing from Yuki and trauma.

Lyrics in that chord progression are super meaningful here

Kizuato "Whatever you left behind has now become my life".

Also Yoorugaakeru lyrics are "Look this Dawn is about to break that's why it'll be ok"

Straight: "I will keep singing until it reaches you"

Doesn't that sound like Hiiragi/Yuki/Uenoyama talking directly to Mafuyu???!! 🥹😭❤️🙏

Guitar Solo by Uenoyama has a delicious easter egg

1:01 same as the lyrics "Time and Time again" in Given's mini album track stagekara kiminisasagu. Meaning that time and time again he'll be here for Mafuyu ❤️😭

I am almost 100% certain that every other part of that solo is a reference to lyrics in Given songs because all the other bits are so I'll have to have another proper listen.

I’m starting to hc Miguel as Miguel Rivera (from Coco)’s great grandson.

It’s mostly because I’ve been doing my family tree for a good while now, so most of my free time is occupied with tracking down Mexican ancestors, looking for resources to better understand the different settings they lived in, reading old Spanish handwritten records, etc. So, with genealogy on the brain, and seeing some names repeated down family lines…I think having Miguel O’Hara be descended from Miguel Rivera would be a neat lil idea.

Like, imagine little Conchata growing up in Mexico with a famous musician grandfather who loves her and dotes on her and her cousins. Yes, he’s a famous musician, but he’s a family man first and is always ready to pass down stories from his life and his loved ones, dead and living. She loves her grandfather so much she decided to name her firstborn son after him.

She wasn’t always the best mom, especially to Miguel, but she passed down those stories and traditions, including singing and a love for music. And Miguel grows up loving to sing, and being good at it but keeping it to himself and Gabriel because George hated to hear it.

Gabriel, on top of being a good artist, is a pretty damn good guitar player and also has a great voice. He mostly keeps it on the down low, though, even in adulthood.

Miguel didn’t pick up any instruments, but he sometimes wishes he picked up the violin before he became Spider-Man. Instead, he let Gabriela pick out an instrument she wanted to play, and if she happened to pick the violin, the onions that manifested were a complete coincidence.

Plus, it’s literally canon that Miguel goes to Mexico to celebrate Día de Los Muertos and that his suit in the comics was one he wore to the festivals. I think it’s better for that to be a thing he does bc the holiday is a big deal in his family rather than bc it’s an excuse to party or whatever.

His mother had an ofrenda and so does he.

Miguel Rivera is still alive (he was born in like 2005, he could totally still be alive in the 2090s and 2100s, so he is in my hc ☺️) so Miguel visits him in Mexico, too. Miguel is shy about singing in front of anybody, but his bisabuelo is able to bring him out of his shell, especially by singing his old songs that Miguel grew up listening to.

The more I think about it, the more attached I become to this hc.

Now I want to write a fic where Miguel is visiting a dimension in the 2020s (616B, 1610B, etc) and he happens to see that a young Mexican musician is starting to trend, and it’s his bisabuelo Miguel as a young man 🥹 so he buys tickets and flies to Mexico 🥹 to watch him live 🥹 and yes he knows this isn’t his bisabuelo but he is as close as he can get to a young Miguel Rivera at the start of his long and successful career and it just hits him in the soul 🥹

And if Miguel Rivera happens to notice a 6’9” giant at his show, who looks strangely familiar, watching him perform like it’s the best thing he’s ever seen… who’s to say.

He said it!! The thing that I wanted to hear from him!

After long 10 years, a decade!!! Masatomo Nakazawa appeared in an anime stage greeting event. In case of an anime movie, it's his first time. But in case of TV anime, it's his second time. It may sound trivial, but this event was significant to him as a voice actor. A comeback is a celebration.

First TV anime stage greeting event was of Dramatical Murder in 2014. And this time was of Given anime. It's second movie is "Given: Hiiragi Mix". In 2024.

He went back home after this event ended, and updated that he'll start YouTube live for a bit, but his fans' emotional words, after event reviews swayed him to hold the live for further one hour.

I’ve started watching LBC and went to go check out some scenes of why r u just for comparison since I know Saint plays a way different character on there and like, wow, is it really the same actor?

Plus recently I also found out that Shin in Minato’s laundromat is apparently the student council guy in my love mix up….

I’m personally pretty bad with faces and names but tl;dr: were there any actors that you had a LOT of trouble recognizing in a different role/show? I feel like this prob would happen more often in j BLs than other countries for various reasons

I think I knew that but didn’t really register about Nishigaki Sho (Shin). Maybe I’ll go rewatch MLMU to see if I can spot him. If it’s a side character or a walk on, I’m not too shocked I missed it.

I am actually pretty good with faces, in the “oh I have seen that actor before” kinda way. It’s names I struggle with. (When IMDB came along, it was a godsend.) 

Were there any actors that you had a LOT of trouble recognizing in a different role/show?

And when watching My Love Mix-Up I did not register AT ALL that he was the same actor as Uenoyama Ritsuka (the lead!) in Given. It’s really rare for that to happen to me. 

MDL told me who he was because I looked him up during MLMU because I liked him so much as Aida Hayato and I was like... 

No? NO! 

NOOO!

Seriously, how can that be the same person? 

He is bonkers good. Like Saint he changes his physicality, but he ALSO changes the nuances of his facial expressions AND resting face (that’s SO HARD to do). It takes a hell of a lot to fool me like that, especially in two shows that released relatively close together in two major roles. 

If it’s just a walk on or a bit part, I forgive myself. But Suzuki Jin was the lead and then the main side bestie! Yet to this day, I’m still occasionally like... that’s THE SAME actor? He even looks taller in Given. It’s crazy making. Mad props to the boy.
