absolutely floored by the beauty of this commission i got from @/sabattons on twitter of Gisèle and her beloved Halsin and Astarion as the Strength card. There is so much deliberate, specific symbolism at work in this piece, so much that i almost don’t know where to start, but at the heart of it is the boundless love and compassion that has always defined Gisèle, regardless of whichever story she inhabits, but particularly this one. Because of her love, they all are free of the struggle and pain of the past, while bringing those lessons forward into the future they build together—symbolized by the sankofa above her head.

In Gisèle’s story, Astarion slew Cazador and freed the spawn; she sent them not merely to the Underdark, but specifically to Lith My’athar, home to her mentor and the Eilistraean temple which took her in when she first defected from Menzoberranzan. And although he rejected the ritual and its promise of power, choosing instead to end the cycle, he later became Ascendant through the divine blessing of Eilistraee, offered freely by She who smiles upon lovers, and saw what he and Her Chosen meant to one another. Thus he runs beneath the moon and the sun by turns, enjoying his newfound power, accompanied by Halsin in his wolf form; loyal and true, the druid sharing with him the joy and freedom of running wild in nature. Both they and Gisèle had the courage to face the anguish of the past, and embrace freedom together.

I just happened to choose elf mage for DAI. My gamer friend said it was a good idea, but mainly I went with it because I went Cousland for DAO and Hawke is human no matter what and I was ready for something new. (Plus, I'd made a Surana Origins file and had to delete her before her story was finished to dl DAI, so I remade her)

but after Haven, and Mother Giselle starts to sing "The Dawn Will Come" and then EVERYONE sings and bows. and fuck. no matter who you play, I get it. it's good. it's EPIC. but there just something about being an elf and/or mage, but especially an elf mage, that makes it SO MUCH MORE. I couldn't breathe watching that, trying to get into my Lavellan's head as this is happening right after she tells Giselle "Blind faith is not enough" and she's so unsure of what she can do, and then all these, people who should hate or be afraid of her, maybe her whole life that's exactly how she was treated, how she was raised to view the world outside the Dalish, but they all have their faith in HER. And it isn't blind faith. They've seen what she does, they're looking right at her and her ears and her vallaslin, and they BELIEVE in what she can do. Her. a Dalish elf. a Dalish mage elf. She's not an alien, she's not a criminal, she's FAITH. She's HOPE.

I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes the entire time. I can't imagine playing any other race and/or class having that same amount of poignancy. Being a dwarf or qunari would be close I think? But not the same. They're isolated from or enemies of this culture. It's not the same as being institutionally oppressed by almost every country, by the MEGA church of the world, for thousands of years, and then having all these people who'd been raised in that culture of oppression turn you into their Symbol of Hope.

That moment. That moment changes the ENTIRE WORLD if you're a Dalish Elf and/or mage.

one day I will make a much longer lore post about her but the cliffs notes on Tav!Gisèle:

- Chosen of Eilistraee.

- Simultaneously Chosen of Loviatar, aka an anguissette.

- born to House Surana, Second House of Menzoberranzan, during Lolth’s Silence. (I will do a whole post just on their history, but they are basically Drow Shahrizai.) She briefly had an arranged betrothal with Minthara when they were very small children that was nullified when Triel Baenre was assassinated and Quenthel took control of House Baenre.

- first love was Shalnazar, the courtesan who deflowered her, he was a secret worshiper of Eilistraee who was then taken in by House Surana for his magical abilities. He introduced her to the Dark Maiden and she worshiped w him in secret.

- while attending Arach-Tinilith, she was caught rule breaking and punished publicly by Minthara, and her getting off on it outed her as what everyone including her erroneously thought was a Lolthite blessing but was in fact her anguissette thing. this gave her a lot of clout but it also made her a target.

- had extremely toxic yuri with Quenthel Baenre for years. Gisèle seduced her for protection from the enemies that last point earned, Quenthel took advantage of her age and position. All the while knowing her daughter Minthara was in love with Gisèle btw.

- defected from Menzo a few years after graduating Arach-Tinilith bc Quenthel demanded she sacrifice Shalnazar. She fled to Lith My’athar, where she formally dedicated herself to Eilistraee’s service and trained as a Sword Dancer under my old Hero of Undrentide in NWN, Kariza de’Camyras. Eventually Eilistraee asked her to become her Chosen, and Gisèle agreed.

- was abducted by the Nautiloid while on her way to Waterdeep, to assist the rebuilding of the Promenade of the Dark Maiden.

- has Draconic ancestry from a silver dragon pre-Descent, and a still living deep dragon, which reflects in her Sorcerer levels.

- mortal reincarnation of my old CHARNAME Ravenna, who ascended to godhood in Throne of Bhaal and became the Goddess of Merciful Death, then was murdered. She does not find out about this until Act 3.

- has a large complicated polycule as usual: this one is Gisèle/Astarion/Halsin/Shadowheart/Wyll/Karlach, but the “core” of it insofar as much as it has one is Gisèle/Halsin/Astarion.

- Wyll becomes her oathsworn protector (eg an Oath of Devotion paladin) once he loses his powers from Mizora.

- She saved Minthara and their relationship status is…deeply complicated but Min eventually begins to accept Eilistraee’s teachings, if in small ways.

- Abdirak is a full companion, joining the group after fleeing the battle at the goblin camp, and becomes her lover and mentor in the ways of Loviatar (who I have always written as a neutrally aligned fem Kushiel type of goddess rather than neckbeard fap bait.).

- Gortash could be a whole post but. she ends up flipping him entirely due to the deep spiritual bond they share as Chosen of Bane and Loviatar. (Think of this as a Scion of Kushiel reacting to his chosen and yeah.)

before I start posting more of my bg3 stuff here I really need to warn people that I approach this game not as someone new to any of this but as someone for whom the original bg trilogy (1+2+tob) is deeply meaningful, and pretty much all of my grievances w 3 stem from how larian treated most of the legacy lore and characters (poorly. as an understatement.). I realize some of that was just them building on the atrocious way wotc finally decided to canonize the old games in FR, but shit like the character assassination of sarevok anchev (one of my favorite characters of all time) is entirely on them.

it’s not only that, it’s also that I’ve been playing in the Realms sandbox as a whole for more than half my life at this point, since I was a tween in the 2E golden age. I cut my teeth worldbuilding w Abeir-Toril. even had wotc not literally lost the plot in 4e, my Realms look very different after 30 years of worldbuilding and storytelling through the various tabletop campaigns I ran for years, my fic, and 20+ years of crpg games set in FR not just from the original BG trilogy, but even earlier in the old SSI gold and silver box era of Curse of the Azure Bonds and the like.

in short, I have a very old and very deep history w FR that predates larian’s entire existence as a game studio much less this 1 game they made in it. this game is simply an opportunity to go home again and add another link on the charm bracelet.

so. in keeping with ed’s mantra, the faerûn Gisèle inhabits is uh. different. eg durge is not a thing, was never a thing, will never be a thing. (in the interest of not upsetting folks, I’ll keep my feelings on it to myself). eg. my loviatar has always resembled lady kushiel much more than the caricature of fevered neckbeard fetish dreams, even before ed set the record straight on her church. but too there are constant references to my older lore and stories from the previous crpgs, and not only baldur’s gate—she is my reincarnated CHARNAME, but she also fled to Lith My’athar and trained under my hero of Undrentide, which becomes very relevant when she sets thousands of vampire spawn free in the Underdark. She also knows the True Name of Mephistopheles because of this association, which gives her leverage when dealing with his son. And so on. Everything is deeply connected.

That might make it a little opaque for some, but that’s nothing new for me lol.
