Smash Comics #24 (July, 1941). Cover by Gill Fox.
Bozo the Robot was originally the tool used by an evil scientist to rob banks. Hugh Hazzard, a private detective, took possession of the robot and used it himself to fight crime.
At first Bozo was controlled by Hazzard using voice commands and remote control. Eventually, Hazzard found it easier to remove most of Bozo’s innards so he could crawl inside and use the robot like a suit of superpowered armor. Bozo could fly up to 400 mph thanks to the tiny propeller on his head, run 70 mph, and had the strength of 1,000 men.
Despite being named Bozo, the robot/suit of armor was usually referred to as “The Iron Man.”
The character, like most of quality’s stable, is now owned by DC Comics. Writer James Robinson had him pop-up in Starman and Superman when he was writing those titles. Grant Morrison originally proposed updating Bozo into a supervillain, which eventually became the character Gonzo the Mechanical Bastard.
