Free Resources I Made for Nonfiction Book Writers - $$$
If you're writing a nonfiction, non-memoir book, you're welcome to join my free monthly video chat group Authors of Nonfiction Books in Progress (ANBIP.) If you join you'll get the recap emails and the invites to meetings, but if you don't like meetings, then just enjoy the emails. Note that it's sort of a professional group so we talk about book writing as more of a job than some universal higher calling or whatever.
Through that, I've had a few people ask me for some of the following documents in this journey, so I decided, why not just make a copy for sharing so that anyone can find them, instead of just people who email me? Feel free to use these as samples, share them, whatever. But first:
What I wish I had known before the book:
While I'm here, before you start your book proposal, I learned too late that you can get paid $80,000 to write one at a journalism fellowship! People do that at the Knight Science Journalism Fellowship, The Scripps Fellowship at the Center for Environmental Journalism, and probably the other Knight Journalism fellowships that I haven't looked into. So, keep your ears open for fellowships if you're thinking of starting a nonfiction book proposal.

Note: most people suggest Publisher's Marketplace, so, even though I didn't like my results from looking there, there is surely a reason everyone else does.
My Book Proposal & how I contacted the agent
Result: contract with MIT Press to write a book about dead animals and $50,000 advance.
My Proposal for the Sloan Grant
Result: I got $56,053 for the book Carcass. Also, at least two other people in my group got the grant, and one mentioned that she never would have known about it if it weren't for ANBIP, nor would she have applied!
List of suggested grants to apply to
Note: most of these book grants--and most legit ones in the world--require a traditional contract. I find a lot of "prizes" for people without trad contracts are not grants at all, but an effort to get you to think you "won" what is, in effect, a contract. That's fine if the contract is fine, but don't let them stroke your ego with the words "you won" if you think you could get a better contract elsewhere. A grant is more like free money.
I also got $500 and some free resources--and miiiiight get some more money in the future?--from a program called Investing in Wyoming's Creative Economy, so, maybe your state has something similar. IWCE is brand new (started in 2023) so we'll see if it even continues on. MANY funding opportunities only exist for a few years before they run out.

Spreadsheet National Park Artists in Residences Applications
Note: I have never got any of these, and most don't pay or work well for writers, TBH. But I know a science writer who did get one. Also, I only included the ones I liked in this spreadsheet and left out the historic parks. Here's a map of more and the National Park Arts Foundation. I only apply to free ones because I noticed that one residency said they got 800 applications and the fee was $120, which, mathematically, is like paying $96,000 to do it (and that one paid $4,000 to the winner.) Also: state parks and BLM land have Artist in Residence programs!

But I'm struggling to find events/places to speak because I mostly only want to go places where I am paid, but I also worry about a conflict of interest if I'm paid by organizations I've covered--or even, orgs that promote or protest anything that I've covered in general! I don't want to be a PETA-funded journalist or a Safari Club International-funded journalist either. If you have experience with setting up a book tour where you profited financially and were journalistically clear, I'd love to hear your story!

“It’s itchy and it makes me look like a fucking Hemsworth,” Dean grumbles, tossing the wig to the side and dropping down onto the couch in Castiel’s suite. “Hey, Cas.”
“H-hello, Dean.” Dean looks at him, mouth twisted into a crooked little grin, and winks.
“There’s nothing wrong with looking like a Hemsworth, sweetie,” Anael says.
Castiel would never say it aloud, but Dean looks better than a Hemsworth, with or without the absurd wig he’s been forced to wear. In Castiel’s opinion, Dean’s always looked better than a Hemsworth, ever since he’d first been hired as the Michael Singer cover model.
With a jaw that has Castiel’s gut doing somersaults and strong, broad shoulders that pair perfectly with a slim waist, as well as striking green eyes that can convey entire sentences, if not paragraphs, in a single expression, Dean Winchester must have been born to one day grace the cover of supernatural romance novels. He fits right in among the dramatic, stock-photo backgrounds and large, golden typeset of the titles on each cover, but now that Castiel’s in charge of Michael and his looks, maybe he could throw Dean a metaphorical bone. glad to hear things are looking up for you! super interested to hear more about writer's residencies—have you ever done one before? and what was the application process like? what are the rules for how you're meant to use your time once there?
i haven’t done a residency before, but i’ve done workshops which are similar, except there’s no proper classroom/pedagogy element.
the application process was truly terrible. the single worst application process i’ve ever been through, and i’ve applied to grad school twice. with nearly all other aspects of the writing life, there’s some manner of standardization. publishing in mags is narrowed down mostly to duotrope and submittable. the book querying process is decently streamlined. grad school and job applications are status quo.
but residencies are so chaotic that there are multiple meanings to the word “residency” and multiple words for what i currently mean by “residency.” other like terms include: fellowship, workshop, conference, retreat, and professorship. all of these have only the barest degrees of separation. moreover “residency” should not be confused with “writer-in-residence” which is a completely different (albeit virtually the same) thing.
a “residency” (or fellowship, or conference, or retreat, ad nauseum) lasts anywhere from 1 week to 2 years. they can be anywhere – universities, farms, writers’ colonies, a random set of loft apartments, whatever. they’re spaces usually where artists go to work on a specific project in a peaceful and supportive environment. they’re not usually restricted to writers, but performers and visual artists and musicians too. when applying, there’s often a box for “please tell us your needs” and you tell them you need a studio space or whatever. obvs i left that box blank because i basically only need a bed.
there are hundreds upon hundreds of residencies. there is no singular website that archives them all. you have to google and google and google, and ask around, and google some more. their sites are generally sketchy looking and some of them haven’t been updated since 2009. in one of the residencies i got accepted to, the application process involved filling out a printed form by hand, scanning it, and emailing it to the lady who owns the place.
moreover, applying for residencies is expensive. i had no idea how expensive it would be. i spent $500 last year applying to 3 graduate schools. this year i spent $250 applying to 9 residencies and i still have a few more to go. each of them has a $25-$40 application fee, even the ones you have to pay to attend.
speaking of money, the weirdest fucking thing about residencies is that some of them offer you a $50k stipend with full benefits for a year, and some of them you have to pay $2000 for one week. some of them have no cost to them at all, but you have to pay for your own travel and incidentals. the good ones offer a modest stipend of a few hundred a week. the whole operation sometimes feels like a ponzi scheme.
the deadlines are truly mind-boggling. some of them have no deadlines at all so you just apply whenever. some of them accept applications twice a year. some, once. some of them accept rotating years of fiction and poetry writers, so you only have one application period every other year, unless you happen to write both fiction and poetry. some of them say they accept “emerging writers” but actually only accept established writers who have 3 NYT bestsellers, and to figure that out you have to get halfway through the application process, where they ask “list your published novels” and it’s a required question.
and then there’s the application itself. all of the applications required a project proposal and a writing sample. some of them required that i have a summary of my writing sample. some of them wanted an exact plan of what i intended to do at the residency. some of them asked for community service proposals in addition to project proposals. some of them wanted a CV and some of them only wanted a list of publications and awards. some of them didn’t want any publications. and the worst part, some of them wanted up to THREE letters of recommendation, which is ABSURD. i had to ask 3 of my beloved mentors to write me a recommendation letter for what amounts to a 2-week vacation i can put on my CV. ridiculous.
as for expectations when you arrive, from what i’ve heard, they don’t care. they want the clout of saying you, who may one day be exceptionally famous and go down in the history of literature, stayed at their place. and you want their CV line.
so unless you want the networking and CV boost of residencies, your better bet is to rent a cabin in the woods and chill out for a while.
