Curiosity 6U8A0051 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: Gentoo penguins have an extremely inquisitive nature. Of all the penguins at York Bay, only the Gentoo seemed truly interested in what we were doing. Each time I would lay down in the sand a handful would come running. The Magellanic penguins did their best to run away, no matter where I was. The few King penguins there, acting regally, seem genuinely aloof and disinterested. I positioned myself for the sunset on the edge of a dune-side colony. The dunes are quite massive and the beach falls into shade long before true sunset. Amicable and curious the Gentoo kept me entertained for most of the rest of that afternoon.

Day 5, and we woke up to an Antarctic blizzard, the snow sweeping in sideways and settling on the deck. Obviously this meant we had to spend a few minutes after breakfast lobbing it at each other like the mature and sensible adults we are. We couldn't visit Port Lockroy because they'd taken damage in a storm last night. To be fair the winds were around 100kms per hour so I'm surprised they still have a building. We did get to land at an Argentine base called Almirante Brown though and it's actually on the peninsula rather than an island so I definitely feel we can tick the seventh continent off. We can go home now. We were in the last group for the landing so we had to wait for a few people to leave first but they took us on a little zodiac ride to look at someblue eyed shags. That was awesome, they had some fluffy chicks, but also awesome was the humpback whale that was so incredibly close to the zodiac I could have fingered its blowhole. We landed right by a gentoo penguin colony and oh sweet Jesus, they fucking stink. I've totally rethought stealing one to keep in the shower. They're very cute though. We had to cross their little penguin highway so we had to sidle quite close to them. Not sad about this. We walked up a fuck off great hig hill for a spot of excellent eyehole fodder which was all when and good but then we had to get down again and I have all the grace of a giraffe trying to get on a lilo in a swimming pool. I definitely stacked it a couple of times which wouldn't be so bad but the only contact between you and Antarctica should be your disinfected bog boots, not your grubby mitts and fat arse. That evening we moored in a sheltered bay where the water was so still and it was so peaceful. The Gentoo Pace C7A2879 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: Keeping up with Gentoo penguins on land isn’t much of an issue but these little buggers are the fastest penguins in the water, outpacing any other penguin species on the planet. Their inquisitive nature makes them a pleasure to watch and photograph. If you lay on the sand at least one or two will come running almost as if they want to make certain that you are not injured. I am intrigued by the prospects of their motivation.

Standby for days and days of Antarctica spam. I'm going to be working this trip into conversations for the rest of my life with even the most tenuous link. Bit cold? Not as cold as that time I went to Antarctica. Getting married? Nice white dress. Reminds me of the time I went to Antarctica. Grandparent dead? Just like Shackleton who went to Antarctica and now you mention it, did I tell you that I also went there? Day 1 was in Ushuaia. Days 2 & 3 were spent crossing the surprisingly calm Drake Passage so if someone can point at the deity responsible for that I'll sacrifice them a penguin. Day 4 was when shit got real and we landed on one of the South Shetland Islands to gawp at elephant seals and penguins. We got so close to them and they gave exactly zero fucks. It was pretty amazing. Staff were on hand to make sure we didn't get TOO close, mind. Tourists are gonna tourist and they'll tourist extra hard for that selfie. That evening a whole shit tonne of humpback whales showed up, bang in the middle of dinner, the inconsiderate bastards. They don't usually hang out with each other, they were probably all just feeding. The ship was steered closer, we stopped and the whales surrounded us. Later on we were told there could have been up to thirty. We didn't know where to look, there were so many, blasting air through their blowholes with a terrific noise.
