Scientists improve materials for reconstructive and plastic surgery

Researchers from IOCB Prague and their colleagues from Ghent University in Belgium have been working on improving the properties of gelatin-based materials, thereby expanding the possibilities of their use mainly in medicine. In a paper published in ACS Applied Engineering Materials, they have presented 3D-printable materials that can be easily monitored using an X-ray machine or through computed tomography (CT). Gelatin-based materials have been a hot topic of research in the last 10 years because they are straightforward to produce, non-toxic, inexpensive, biodegradable and—most importantly—because they promote cell growth. For this reason, they are pre-eminently used in plastic and reconstructive surgery. After a surgeon places an implant made of such material into a wound, the body gradually breaks it down and replaces it with tissue of its own. These substances thus accelerate wound healing and even enable the remolding of tissues, for example when performing breast reconstruction after mastectomy. In addition, the materials can be used for 3D printing implants tailored to individual patients.

Researchers from Japan have unlocked the potential of tannic acid and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene oxide by using them to synthesize strong and smart supramolecular gels in a zero-waste process. These gels exhibit remarkable characteristics, such as high elongation, strong adhesion, resistance to swelling, shape memory, self-healing property, and biocompatibility. Going forward, these innovative, zero-waste gels can have promising applications as advanced medical materials, promoting a sustainable approach to material science. Recent advances in chemistry have allowed for the cost-effective synthesis of supramolecular materials with advanced properties. Due to their unique properties, such as toughness, elasticity, self-healing, biodegradability, and shape memory, these materials find diverse applications as advanced materials in various fields. However, their fabrication often involves time-consuming and complex processes, organic solvents, and waste production, resulting in low yields and high synthesis costs.

Today it's work on optimising day using camera raw and photoshop

This is one of the images I shot last week in studio using two different shades of purple.

This is @alisonpenny daughter Marissa who was kind enough to model for me was well as Alison.

I did basic optimising in camera raw the moved into Photoshop where I did some retouching with spot removal, eye whitening, but not a great deal as I wanted the image to remain natural using the lasso tool and hue & saturation, I used the clone tool to remove some fly away hair, and then I sharpened the eyes a fraction using the sharpen tool.

Darkened eye brows and lashes a little using dodge tool.

There wasn't much shine so left it and I didn't want to spoil the colours of the gels so did nothing with skin tone.

Saved as tiff /PSD / jpeg.

Opened jpeg in Photoshop and smoothed skin a little, see previous post for smoothing technique. Saved as tiff /psd/ jpeg.

Finally, I opened competed images in photoshop to add text watermark, saved as jpeg
