What happens in the Christmas part that the anime missed?

[Full summary]

In the novels, the last time Sousuke sees Gauron, he's given a clue to the next big threat to Kaname from Amalgam. The word "badham."

VMC starts out with them following loose connections to this word, but it's been one false lead after another. We also find out during this time that Sousuke is no longer actually on duty when in Japan. Protecting Kaname is no longer a Mithril mission. Sousuke is now a part timer, and every time he messes up now, he's personally on the hook for any damages and pay offs needed for him to stay.

A company donates a cruise to Jindai, to make up for their Okinawa trip that had gotten hijacked instead. The ship is named the "Pacific Chrysalis" and it turns out that "badham" can be translated as "pupa" or "chrysalis."

The SRT sets up a mission to take over this ship, and stop whatever Amalgam is planning. Kaname, thinking she's being rejected after Wraith tells her the West Pacific Fleet is having a Christmas party, ignores all of Sousuke's attempts to explain the mission.

A lot happens on board. Kaname takes out the "terrorists" to the awe of her classmates, except for Kyouko, who can't get over how familiar they all seem. Tessa is there because she didn't want to be left out, but she's no operative, so she gets pushed to the side. She and Kaname both feel rejected and forgotten on their birthday.

Killy B. Sailor, that US naval officer chasing after the Toy Box, is also there. He was supposed to go with his wife, but she left him, so he dragged his poor xo on this vacation with him. When Tessa walks away dejected after realizing she can't help with the work, dressed as a maid, she runs across Sailor having a Die Hard moment, and he thinks to 'rescue' her.

Other members of the SRT come across a bunch of mini AS, Alastors. It turns out the blasted things self detonate when they're no longer able to fight, which they find out the hard way.

To keep Kaname out of everyone's hair, Sousuke takes a walk with her, and gets to explain everything she ignored earlier. She's starting to come to terms with the fact that she just can't expect her life to be normal. That she's been a brat and that Sousuke just wants to protect her. All these people are here, really, to protect her. She's too broken and shy to say as much, so she simply grabs his sleeve, too shy to take his hand. But it's enough.

They have a moment out on the deck, looking at the sky, being cold. He gives her some Christmas gifts, self defense items. She's a little disappointed, but she's also accepting. This is her life now, and this is Sousuke, and she likes him and she chose him, and she likes that he thinks of her.

Things happen, Tessa is kidnapped, and it's up to Sousuke to get her back. He tells Kaname there's something he wants to tell her when he gets back, and he and Al take off to save Tessa. While rescuing her, there's a moment where she's being held, everything is chaotic, and he has to take a shot at the man hiding behind her.

He does, and she's saved, and she can't help but think. If it had been Kaname, would he have taken the risk? Obviously he's skilled enough, it went fine, but would fear of missing stayed his hand if Kaname were the hostage?

The helicopter they're on is falling from the sky. He takes hold of her and they're falling through the air, and Tessa has to try. She asks if he likes her. He answers simply that yes, of course. She knows he's misunderstood, and she asks if he likes her the same way she likes him. He's learning, and he knows what she means. No, he tells her, he does not share her feelings.

After all this chaos, he doesn't get to reunite with Kaname for a few days. When they do, when he gets her alone, he's awkward. He says the same thing she had a few months before, when she found him despairing on the streets of Hong Kong.

"Just a few days and I lose my nerve."

But he does have another gift for her. This one is a birthday gift, one he'd meant to give her before. It's a lapis lazuli, one he'd found when he lived in Afghanistan, and carried with him all these years. It suits her, he thinks, and he wants her to carry it now.

Kaname looks okay. They gave her black hair this time, which is canon, but wtf is wrong with Gauron?! He looks like your average eastern European bad guy, but why tf is there a pussy on his forehead?!

Tessa is adorable as always, but check out the beak on Kalinin! He must be ex-mossad in this version.

I really disliked Into The Blue, bringing back Gauron and then spending so much time on traumatizing Sousuke for drama I think was cheap since it seemed to fly in the face of both the slipstick nature of the comedy in the series and made the drama feel cheap. I did like the fight scenes on the submarine and Tessa's scenes were really cool but honestly it didn't redeem it for me. If Chrunchyroll get's seasons 2 and 3 any time soon, I don't plan to watch them.

Damn, I’m sorry but Captain Alberta does look like he should be in a very shady hentai. He reminds me of Gauron from Full Metal Panic. I am expecting him to call Katt “Kasheem” now.

It’s a shame he draws Alberta so well, because everyone else looks terrible. Actually, London doesn’t look that bad, but that’s because we haven’t seen any closeups of him.
