Fernando Botero’s deep knowledge of art history, particularly of the Western canon, has been critical to the development of his artistic career. In his early twenties, the artist traveled to Europe, where he intensively studied the work of Italian Renaissance masters Uccello and Masaccio, as well as the Spanish masters Velázquez and Goya. In his work, Botero synthesizes elements of art history with inspiration he draws from his Colombian identity and uses his aesthetic vocabulary to depict and give life to his signature characters. The concept of volume appeared early on in his work and has continued to capture his interest throughout his career. Celebrate Botero Masterpieces from the 60s and 70s We are pleased to announce the exhibition Celebrate Botero, complimenting Fernando Botero's 60th career anniversary show at Centro Palacio de Correos, Plaza de Cibeles, in Madrid. This unprecedented exhibition includes selected Masterpieces from the 60s and 70s from Gary Nader's outstanding collection and some loaned artworks, allowing us to survey two of the most significant decades of the master's career. Botero's oeuvre is inspired by the work of his predecessor, where the "baroque" exaggeration of the portrayed objects reminds us that his signature style stands as an array of influences, from Renaissance masters to the 20th-century expressionist movements. Fernando Botero was born in Medellin, Colombia (1932). In 1950, he graduated from Medellin University. He went on to study in Spain and Italy before eventually moving to New York in 1960, where he won the Guggenheim National Prize for Colombia. Over the next few years, Botero began to develop his trademark style. The small-town life he experienced as a child and the Colombian people of his youth would become his most rich source of inspiration. In 1973, Botero moved to Paris and began making sculptures. Botero has achieved international recognition for his painting, drawings, sculptures, and exhibitions around the world. His art is collected by many major international museums, corporations, and private collectors around the world. Celebrate Black History Month | Wifredo Lam and the Black Spirit "I wanted with all my heart to paint the drama of my country, but by thoroughly expressing the black spirit, the beauty of the plastic art of the blacks." Wifredo Lam. Please join of the exhibition Wifredo Lam and the Black Spirit as we celebrate Black History Month. The opening reception was on Thursday, February 27 at Gary Nader Art Centre, Wynwood Arts District, Miami. Presenting masterworks from throughout the career of one of Cuba's most celebrated artists. A highlight among those showcased in this exhibition is the monumental painting Le Guerrier, an example of the artist hybrid identity, an abstracted, geometric hallucinating angular figure with a robust suggestion to tribal sculpture. Hermès Trismégiste is another outstanding work where the energy and mystery of the bursting figures depict a synthesis of animal-human-vegetal creatures surging from a blurry, almost idyllic background. In Figure - Femme Cheval, Lam metaphorically embodies Afro-Cuban spirituality in the figure of the horse-headed woman. Valerie Fletcher notes that "in Santeria symbology, a horse signifies the possession or empowerment of a devotee by an orisha; when a practitioner becomes possessed, that person is described as being ridden by that spirit." "I have tried to relocate black cultural objects in terms of their own landscape and in relation to their own world.
