Dylan at 80 - Is that measured in albums or years?

I often write on these pages about individual musicians when they have passed, rather than when they pass milestones (as opposed to gallstones or kidney stones!), and usually in regard to jazz greats. I'm making an exception here because of the sheer unavoidability (just read The Guardian!) of the 80th birthday tomorrow (Monday) of Bob Dylan, a musician that I, and thousands of other hacks, have written about on many and various occasions. Having read the prolix and effusive article in today's Observer, I must admit that I can find little to add, except in terms of some very personal reflections.

There are hundreds of books on Dylan, and scores of university courses in America which center on him. I have well over a dozen books about him myself, and around 30 of his records, which are feeble amounts when one takes into account all that has been written about him and all the music he has produced since 1961. I first properly encountered him in 1970, around the time of the release of New Morning (i.e. in the middle of his first 'crap period'?). I was far too young to fully appreciate why so many older people felt so let down by Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait, New Morning and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, but I got an inkling of why, when I very soon got to listen to Freewheelin', Bringing It All Back Home, Blonde on Blonde, and, especially, Highway 61 Revisited. Of course all the 1969-71 albums have been critically re-evaluated by subsequent generations, even the then-excoriated Self Portrait, famously rubbished by Greil Marcus in Rolling Stone ("what is this shit?" being the whole review.) Retrospectively, this merely goes to demonstrate how divisive and absolutely (and absolutist-ly) up-themselves and self-important journos like Marcus were at the time. (And inappropriately influential, what's more.)

I well remember 1979, by which time I was managing a record shop, and the abuse Slow Train Coming received from the punk-energised critical establishment, after the critically celebrated 'triumvirate' of Blood on the Tracks, Desire and, to a lesser degree, Street Legal (1974-8). Once again, some entitled ‘fans’ felt that they had "been had", to quote John Lydon's infamously withering summation of the Sex Pistols career in San Francisco in January 1978 (coincidently the city that also saw the very last commercial live gig by The Beatles). We then had another Dylan 'dark age', of the 80s and early 90s (briefly redeemed by Oh Mercy! in 1989), until the generally accepted next trio of redemptive titles, Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft and Modern Times (1997-2006). Dylan kept 'em coming, but a bit more slowly by his late middle age. (Stunningly, in comparison, he pumped out Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde in just over one year!)

So now this incredible musician is still flooring us with his powers of self-renewal. Some (and 'some' includes myself) rate his latest, Rough and Rowdy Ways, as up there with his very best studio albums, certainly in any notional 'Top Ten'. And please tell me, how many other pop/rock-era musicians, still performing, can produce, in their late-70s, a work so inspiring? Take the first number off his birthday figure, and you will have that exact number, i,e. zero. Neil Young perhaps? Van Morrison? Paul McCartney? (Sorry, but no chance.)

In jazz, only Sonny Rollins (born as far back 1930), now 90 years young, can hold a torch to Dylan's musical and chronological longevity. In Improv, we have, significantly, a few more candidates, born around the same time as the Bard of Hibbing: Evan Parker (born 1944), Trevor Watts (1939) and Eddie Prevost (1942), for example, have continued to produce fantastic work, from 1966 up to the present day. Only the pandemic has slowed them down. And their current work, most importantly, remains as significant as ever.

And yet, who knows what comes next? Knowing Dylan, the next album promises to be yet another 'let down', before he records his next wonderful 'come-back triumvirate' of recordings, around 2030-32, when he reaches 90? He is truly 'inspirational', a word that I have learned to not use lightly.

Venom Fic preview & Beta Request

So, I’ve had this Venom-fic sitting here basically finished since January, but my regular beta’s been pretty snowed under of late (and still has that last UNCLE thing to get through before she even sees this one), so I’m looking for other volunteers.

For context: fic is basically an extended missing-scene from the film between Anne and Venom (mostly while chronically stuck in traffic on route to the Life Foundation to save Eddie’s arse). It’s about 5K long, PG-R rated -- and, for better or worse, rather more Eddie/Venom-ish than you might expect given that Eddie doesn’t really appear. Drop me a line if you’re interested.

Eddie meets Venom (properly – face to face, or near enough) while soaking wet, slumped on a dock on the wrong side of the bay after the ride-of-his-life came to a bone-crunching conclusion.

Anne meets Venom later the same night in a disabled toilet cubicle, having staggered in and locked the door after a truly disorienting encounter with a Chihuahua in the hospital corridor.

Eddie’s parasite has a face like a living nightmare on a neck of liquid flesh. It speaks in a voice like an oil fire, dragging out its vowels like it wants to hear them suffer before letting them go.

Hello, Anne.

Anne is not in the habit of whimpering. She damn well whimpers now. “Oh… god…”

Anne can hardly believe what she’s hearing. “Uh, you could have asked?”

Venom makes a noise of frustration that ripples backwards down its neck with some force. This is irrelevant! If you really cared for Eddie, you should be more concerned with the armed men who dragged him out of here, a prisoner!

Anne is presented with a sudden, startling vision of Eddie being tasered into unconsciousness and carried into an elevator – the colours washed out into muted yellows and blues, the angle low and broken, as if being viewed by someone with a very big nose. In a flash of understanding, Anne realises she’s being shown a dog’s-eye-view of Eddie’s abduction. The disquieting thought occurs that this creature may not be lying.

Minions of the Life Foundation, pronounces Venom. They have pursued us across your city. I could have protected him! But no, you had to separate us. To leave him vulnerable.

Parts of Anne seriously consider doing some more whimpering, but it would be a pretty poor lawyer who sat there and took an accusation like that. “You were killing Dan! Were you going to put his throat back when you were done crushing it too?”

I will do much worse to the next being to come between me and Eddie! A mess of angry vibration, Venom draws itself up until its floating head towers above her. His life is in your hands now, Anne. I have no time to waste on uncooperative hosts. With a gravity that suggests Venom has at last reached what it’s been building to from the beginning, it asks, Will you help us?

With a feeling that sinks like a gallstone, Anne realises there is only one possible answer. And so begins what is to be the most surreal episode in what is, by far, the most surreal episode in Anne’s life to date.

“It’s only right I kiss you back, the shirt does say that I should kiss a musician.”

Eddie laughed at her words before nodding, “fair point. Let’s get you home I’m sure we can think of other ways you can support the arts.”

Smiling she nods her head as he starts his van up before driving off. She was glad she bought that shirt, it was definitely worth it.
