So I'm watching Scott's Legacy SMP trying to find his character's first meeting with Pearl for soulmate reasons, and let me tell ya, I did not expect this series to start with /checks notes

I was watching Scott's Last Life finale again and. The shift he went through from "I have to, you killed Pearl!" as he chases Ren down for killing his closest friend, to "Me and Cleo are actually soulbound to ourselves, we've decided," and leaving said closest friend behind. What happened dude??

From a cc pov it makes complete sense. They're just friends playing together and having fun, and the storyline of rejecting your assigned soulmate and teaming up with a chosen soulmate instead is *incredibly* fun. I love the Divorce Quartet, as well as the Secret Soulmates and the Broken Hearts club.

But from a character pov? That's your best friend from a past life, and her being in the nether for a session is enough to abandon her?

I know in Martyn's lore there's no emotions attached to your memories, but that still feels like a massive shift. It's also a part of his lore that I don't use in my personal headcanon, so it doesn't explain the situation for me.

There is one popular fan theory though that I do like, that only the winners remember the past seasons, which at least would explain why Cleo feels no attachment to Pearl in that moment. But for Scott..

There is one idea I came up with. Maybe, the Watchers were angry at Scott for having defied them, and as punishment messed with his head. Maybe, they planted a seed of doubt and anger and resentment towards Pearl in him, taking from him something that had once been a beautiful friendship. Maybe they planted the same seed in him towards Cleo, but it was simply never given the opportunity to grow and fester since they met early on in the season and quickly established a friendly dynamic. Pearl though, was gone for the whole first session, off in the nether with the Watchers' puppet, which was all this seed needed to grow like vines around his heart.

I'll be honest, I'm not 100% sold on this theory, even though it's my own. Having Scott's decision be a result of brainwashing instead of his own free choice takes away from his character. It's not really "chosen soulmates" in this context, is it?

But it's still fun angst, I think I'll accept it as like an AU or smth. There's a lot this would have an impact on, like his relationship to Cleo, his choice to sacrifice himself for Pearl etc, so maybe I'll expand on this
