Packing film selection

Wide range of plastic polymer materials.

Each polymer has differences in permeability to air, water and light, rigidity/flexibility.

Different foods have different requirements;

●Foods susceptible to drying but not affected by oxygen (e.g. bread) need high moisture barrier [LDPE ]

●Foods susceptible to moisture pick-up and affected by oxygen (e.g. crisps) need high moisture barrier and high oxygen barrier, [ OPP ]; plus laminate with Aluminium foil will further prevent light and oxygen.

●Food requiring containment (liquid foods) need rigid plastic.

3. PVC – Polyvinyl Chloride (e.g. some types of cling wrap for meat, fish, cheese, vegetables; clear plastic containers for fresh fruit or takeaway sandwiches).

Thermoplastic vs thermoset Packaging polymers may be classified into thermoplastics and

thermosets, depending on whether crosslinks are present.

Thermoplastics

Soften and melt when heated, but resolidify upon cooling

Can be easily shaped by heat and pressure (e.g. films, bottles, etc.)

Support hot-forming methods such as injection-moulding.

Heated in several cycles, polymers are melted and cooled to become solid without significant loss of properties.

Recyclability: Easier to recycle.

Thermoset polymers

Change irreversibly when heated.

The change usually involves cross-linking (setting) which strengthens the polymers.

They are often made from multi-part compounds and formed before setting (e.g. epoxy resin).

Setting accelerates with heat, or for some polymers with UV light.

Thermosets will not melt, and have good heat resistance.

Heating does not soften the materials, but severe heating irreversibly destroy covalent bonds (decomposition).

Much harder to recycle.

Examples: Phenolics, epoxies, silicones, some polyesters, polyurethanes and elastomers

Heat seal strength

The strength of the bond formed by heat sealing is important in heat sealable plastic packaging.

This property related to a film’s ability to make a peel-resistant seal.

Measured by testing the sealed samples under controlled temperature, pressure and dwell-time (time during which heat is applied).

Then measure the seal’s resistance to peeling on a tensile tester.

Plastic Laminates

Since no single film can satisfy all packaging requirements, several different films may be combined by lamination or coextrusion.

Lamination of plastic films can be done using an adhesive, Or If the two plastic films each have heat-sealing properties, they may be joined together by passing the films through a heated roller

Laminates can include layers of different plastic films, paperboard and metal (aluminium), achieving barrier properties with the summation of all the different components.

Polymer coatings and laminates

Polymers are also used to coat other materials; for example, paper coffee cups are often coated with a thin layer of polyethylene, which makes them hard to recycle.

Polymers are also used in laminates (multilayer films), either with another polymer, or paper or metal.

Different components may serve as barriers to light, moisture, oxygen, taste and aroma compounds.

Coatings are applied to the surfaces of plastic films to improve heat-sealing, barrier and printing properties

This is a measure of a film’s ability to retain freshness, preventing the escape of moisture from moist products, or preventing dry products from picking up moisture from outside.

The moisture passing through the film in a given time is reported as water-vapour transmission rate (WVTR) in g/m2/24 hours.

The ability of a gas or other volatile substance to penetrate and pass through a material.

Gases include oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and various volatile compounds found in foods.

This property is associated with the retention of colour, flavour and odour.

Permeability is expressed as cc (mL) of gas permeated per 1 square metre of film in 24 hours.

A material is considered as ‘high oxygen barrier’ if its Oxygen transmission Rate (OTR) is < 15.5 cc/m2/24 hr.

Mount Gay are the oldest continuously operating rum distillery in the world having traced their history officially to 1703, hence “1703” often appears on Mount Gay products and marketing. In reality, rum was probably being distilled at Mount Gay before this date, but either way, Mount Gay’s heritage and pedigree is one of the finest in the world.

Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend, to give the rum its full title, recently launched in the UK (2020). It replaces Mount Gay XO, first launched in 1992, and sits around the £50 mark, a tad higher than its predecessor. This is a new blend of rums without an official age statement, which gives Mount Gay greater flexibility in their blending options from year-to-year. The rums are between five and 17 years old and aged entirely in Barbados. The “Triple Cask Blend” name appropriately comes from the rums being previously aged in casks that held American Whiskey, Bourbon and Cognac. New Master Blender Trudiann Branker has created this new blend from a combination of copper pot batch distillations and traditional continuous column still rums, making Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend a Single Blended Rum.

It is presented at 43%, the traditional ABV for a rum from Barbados.

Bottle/Presentation 2/3

Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend has an outer box with XO embossed in big bronze letters in the middle. Further down is useful info about the three cask types used, the “Round & Complex” style, tasting notes and the Master Blender’s signature. Opening the box reveals Mount Gay’s more recent bottle shape – a squat flask with an elongated neck. I say “more recent” as although XO’s bottle remains the same, the Eclipse and Black Barrel bottles have been revamped into the same shape. The label repeats the info from the box but also includes a bottle number (Mine is AP 08978). It looks and feels like a step up from the previous packaging.

Glass/Aroma 8/10

The rum presents itself as medium-amber in the glass but heading towards an orangey colour rather surprisingly. The rum’s legs are thick and slow to descend.

Aroma-wise…..caramel, tropical fruit, peppered spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, red cherries and a touch of menthol underneath everything. Further nosings reveal tobacco, green bananas and vanilla.

Taste, Initial-middle 37/40

On entry the rum glides very smoothly over your lips and tongue. It is buttery, creamy and delicate with hints of chocolate, oak and caramel. It is like an alcoholic, warm Häagen-Dazs Salted Caramel ice cream wrapped in Cadbury’s Dairy Milk. Scrumptious!

Multiple tastings reveal warming black peppery spice and a build up of dried oak.

In the mid-palate, the medium bodied rum develops a touch more peppery spice and is joined by dark fruits, almonds and refreshing citrus.

Taste, Middle/Throat 35/40

The mid-palate spice continues to develop and towards the rear of the mouth becomes a bit fiery. Presumably the Mount Gay pot still distillate starting to dominate over its lighter column still counterpart.

Sipping again and the rum develops more of an oak presence to complement the warming peppery spice notes. A dry astringency coats the inside of your mouth accompanied by some now bitter chocolate notes – more like a 100% cacao than a vegetable-fat, milk-led Cadbury’s offering that the entry felt like. There is even a hint of something pastry-esque lurking underneath, too.

Afterburn/Finish 6/7

A medium-long finish with peppery caramel and smoky oak building alongside a dry and restrained hint of fire in the back of the throat.

Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend Box and Bottle

Overall

A Barbadian modern classic, re-packaged with a new blend for 2020.

My first tasting was a very distinct meh, I preferred the previous XO. But spend some time with this little beauty and its powerful elegance woos you towards it and by the time you have had half a bottle, the previous XO is a distant memory of your rum-tasting infancy. Quite often when I am writing about rums I find that a couple of sips from a sample bottle in one evening is not enough, but spend a week or more with a whole bottle and you get a better impression about the rum.

So, what about putting Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend alongside the previous edition? Well, the most obvious thing of note is an increase in the level of pot still element in the blend. The new edition is more powerful and robust. The old XO seems sweeter and lighter by comparison, whereas the new XO has more fire and some rough edges that tend to come from pot still distillates. With that has come a price increase, too…..Around Christmas 2019, I could pick up a Mount Gay XO on Amazon for around £36, and that was often discounted to £30-33. A quick Google search shows it available at £33.49 (May 2020). Therefore, the new blend is a significant step up in price as well, but it is now more clearly placed well above the Black Barrel offering that was previously not too much less than XO price-wise. So, it seems that Mount Gay’s relaunch of two of its rums is not just a change of blend, but a different target audience – I think Black Barrel is mostly aimed at the cocktail sector, whereas the new XO is more to the sip and savour enthusiast.

It is interesting to see that Mount Gay includes “Barbados Rum” and “Est. 1703” wherever possible on its boxes and labels. Probably pre-empting the potential Barbadian Geographical Indication (GI) and the added value that brings by being called “Barbados Rum.” And naturally, they are very proud of their history and so they should be! There is no reference to the proposed Gargano reclassification of rums by calling it a Single Blended Rum though.

I do like the re-branded bottles – Eclipse, Black Barrel and XO all have the same bottle shape, following on from the special editions, such as the Mount Gay Peat Smoke Expression Rum.

Suffice to say that as a rum drinker that always enjoys Mount Gay rums, I have really enjoyed the new XO Triple Cask Blend tremendously. One of my favourite rums of 2020 so far

Value: 5/10

This was a tough call as Mount Gay’s rums are usually pretty keen price/value-wise. But the new blend is 55-60% more expensive, which is quite a price-hike. The quality is not in doubt, but it loses some marks value-wise as a result, especially compared to Appleton’s keenly priced 12yo Rare Blend at around £35, with which this rum will be competing. Although with Appleton’s impending rebranding/relaunch, that price will go up, too.

How to Use Coconut Oil for Wounds, Cuts, Burns, And Scabs

You probably know that coconut oil has amazing benefits – but did you know that it can actually help to heal wounds and cuts? Scientists agree that using coconut oil for wounds is an effective way to promote faster healing.

In fact, there are many research studies that have found applying coconut oil to a cut or scrape on your skin can help you heal more quickly – and it works on all sorts of skin issues, from diabetic wounds to burns to dry skin. If you remember, coconut oil even came in handy for helping my concrete-mangled face shed its scabs and get back to smooth in just three days!

Of course, using the right kind of coconut oil in the right way is crucial for reaping the wound-healing benefits and maximizing your results. From which type of coconut oil works best to heal wounds to when, where, and how to apply it, find out everything you need to know about the powers of coconut oil to heal your skin:

WHAT IS COCONUT OIL?

You’ve probably seen jars of coconut oil at your local grocery store, but you may not know exactly what it is – or more specifically, how it’s created. Coconut oil comes from coconuts that are found on the coconut palm tree – or the Cocos nucifera. The coconuts are harvested from the tree when they’re mature, and then coconut oil is extracted from the kernel or meat.1

Coconut oil can be extracted after the coconut milk has been removed while the meat is still wet, which results in what’s called virgin coconut oil. It also can be extracted from the copra2 – or dried coconut meat – which results in more refined coconut oil. I’m a fan of using the “whole food,” or as whole as possible, for both food and for skin application, so I always buy organic, virgin oil.

Coconut oil is loaded with saturated fats, with nearly 90% of fatty acids in coconut oil being saturated fats.

Another product that’s similar to coconut oil and has been found to offer many of the same benefits for skin healing is cultured coconut extract, which is virgin coconut oil that undergoes additional bacterial fermentation.3

This may be useful in helping the skin maintain its own microbiome. (Yes, like the gut, the skin has a wide variety of beneficial bacteria that keep it healthy and young-looking and quick to heal.)

Lauric Acid in Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid and a number of other fatty acids, which research suggests have a positive effect on wound healing.4 Scientists have found that the high levels of monolaurin in coconut, which is derived from the large amounts of lauric acid, are particularly important because monolaurin has the ability to disintegrate the membranes of lipid-coated harmful bacteria. In short, monolaurin is thought to be what gives coconut oil its antibacterial and antifungal properties.5

CAN COCONUT OIL HELP HEAL WOUNDS?

When it comes to research about using coconut oil to heal open wounds on your skin, there’s no question: Using coconut oil can help cuts, scrapes, and scabs to heal more quickly. In fact, multiple research studies have found that coconut oil has a wide range of healing properties.

In animals, wounds treated with virgin coconut oil healed more quickly than untreated wounds. The coconut-oil treated wounds also showed a significant increase in pepsin-soluble collagen and increased antioxidant enzyme activities.6

Burns treated with coconut oil had significant improvements in burn wound contraction – or the body’s efforts to close up the wound – as well as a significantly decreased period of epithelialization – or new tissue growth that covers a wound to heal it.7

Coconut oil was found to be more effective than silver sulfadiazine cream at treating diabetic ulcers.8

The monolaurin in coconut oil can make it an effective antibacterial and antifungal treatment. Both bacterial and fungal infections can slow down the ability of wounds to heal.9

Coconut oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties.

In addition to helping heal wounds, coconut oil has been shown to have excellent skin benefits. It can help with a variety of skin conditions and offer added protection from damage caused by the sun.

Coconut oil was found to be just as safe and effective as mineral oil for treating dry skin.10

Coconut oil decreased the severity of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis in pediatric patients.11

Coconut oil in the form of cultured coconut extract provides better barrier functions for the skin and has an anti-inflammatory effect after skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation.12

Coconut oil can even help protect the skin from the damaging effects of the sun’s UV radiation.13

HOW DO YOU USE COCONUT OIL FOR WOUNDS?

To harness the power of coconut oil for healing wounds, start with virgin coconut oil – which is the pure oil that’s extracted from fresh coconut meat before it’s been dried.

Most of the research involving coconut oil for wound treatment has been conducted using virgin coconut oil, and several studies have shown that, compared to refined coconut oil, virgin coconut oil has more inflammation reducing anxtioxidants and is better able to fight free radicals.14

You can find virgin coconut oil online. (My readers love to stock up on discounted buckets of the highest quality oil I’ve found, during our annual wholesale-price Group Buy on a variety of whole-foods pantry staples–so get on our newsletter list so you hear about it in October every year).

It will be whiter than refined oil and have a more coconut-y smell and taste. Just make sure it says “virgin” and “cold-pressed” on the label. This same kind of oil I use for my skin is what I use for baking or frying as well.

Wounds respond best to coconut oil when they’re treated while still fresh, so it’s smart to keep a jar of virgin coconut oil in your pantry and in your medicine cabinet. You can treat a wound using coconut oil with the following steps:

Immediately after getting a cut, wash it with running water and pat it dry.

Then, apply a generous amount of coconut oil to the cut using sterile gauze.

Cover the cut with a bandaid or sterile bandage if you prefer.

Re-apply the coconut oil to your cut several times a day, and continue to apply coconut oil to your scabs until the wound is healed.

You can treat burns using coconut oil in a similar way. When I blended some boiling turkey drippings in a blender, for a friend, to make gravy, the blender jar exploded and I ended up with one arm covered with second-degree burns. I used raw honey, wrapped it with an ace bandage, and later, coconut oil.

As soon as your skin is burned, immediately run the burn beneath cold water, which will stop the burning process.

Then, apply coconut oil to the burn using sterile gauze.

Cover the burn with a sterile bandage, and repeat the process several times a day until the burn has healed. [Note: If you have it, I prefer aloe vera or raw honey, or alternating the two, to treat the initial burn for a couple of days, then coconut oil to help speed the healing process.]

Of course, if your wound or burn is large or severe, please get professional medical attention.

WHEN TO USE COCONUT OIL FOR WOUNDS

Using coconut oil as soon as possible after you receive a cut, burn, scrape, or small open wound can provide a wide range of benefits. Along with helping you to heal more quickly, it keeps your skin moisturized and boosts collagen production, both of which may help to reduce scarring.

Because coconut oil also has anti-inflammatory effects, applying virgin coconut oil to your burn or cut may help to reduce swelling and relieve some of the pain.

COCONUT OIL FOR SCARS

While research hasn’t shown that using coconut oil for scars (or any other kind of cream for scars) will necessarily help to minimize or eliminate existing scars, some anecdotal evidence shows that coconut oil could help. Because coconut oil is moisturizing on the skin and boosts collagen production, there may be benefits if you apply coconut oil to existing scars regularly.

There is anecdotal evidence that coconut oil can help reduce the harsh appearance of scars.

Plus, treating scars with coconut oil hasn’t been shown to have any negative effects, so it’s worth trying. Most skin care products are full of chemical additives to preserve it for years.

At the very least, the moisturizing effects of coconut oil will help to keep your scar from getting dry and becoming uncomfortable.

Next time you get a cut, an open wound, or a sore on your face (or any other part of your body), skip the chemical medicinal creams and head for your pantry.
