hello hello hello to anyone who actually finds these interesting, we just like having an excuse to look through our photos.

here’s some photos from ireland: just to prove we went

thats us chillin’ (haha ellen is a comedy genius) in the fridge in belfast

there were bad omens for the tour in belfast considering the power went off as soon as we started our set. but we feng shuid and cleaned our chi and started the tour anyway. we also made tom felate a banana…

The first memorable thing to have happened was the bread face we made in bristol…(on another note Ollie is currently continuing his quest to try and fit into as many small spaces as possible. This week he is attempting to get into the kitchen cuboard in The Cockpit. He is currently in the cuboard. He just fell out of the cuboard. People are laughing, i think he may be crying in pain. Possibly concussed.) Back to the bread face, all appreciate the glory and wonder of its kiwi eyes and banana smile. We were so proud of the success of this initial experiment that we thought we would make him a brother. He is closely modelled on his siblings, apart from the additional banana eyebrows and extra detail (note the lifelike haribo eyes.)

We have been touring with the wonderful You say party! We say die! and dead good Sky Larkin, who have been brilliant company and have been fairly embarassing to play after due to the fact we suck bottoms compared to them. The photo below is a example of YSP!WSD! majesty when we all played in Manchester together, although you cant really tell she is wearing a amazing gold dress. Krista is a shining star in a dark night. Devon is a dark knight mounting a shining star. Derek is an explosion of stardust onto the face of Steve who is painting glitter on Becki. Before the gig in Manchester Neil decided to try and to prove that we are the second most punk rock band in England by letting us write on him in eyeliner. He then removed his shirt during the second song prompting his mum to worry that he had got a rather hideous new tattoo. We also did a interview in Manchester with a certain someone who wasnt very careful when texting a friend during the show and a mutual friend reported to us afterwards that this certain someone said that some of the band were fit, and perhaps dirty and looked like they like to experiment in bed due to their appearance. The bands response to this is that we are all very hygienic and extremely boring in bed.

In Glasgow we were given some brilliant Fan art which is Niall’s own interpretation of our little faces, and bodies. He has also included himself in the picture, but at first we just thought he had mispelt Neil. It is now sitting on our Dashboard, and if anyone wants to make us some more to perk up our van we would be very grateful. I would also like some febreeze to save time on washing. If we get two we might be able to set up a fan art page on our website….

We had a aftershow party in Glasgow (our very first organised aftershow party) at the Garage, we think however the staff are perhaps….muppets. They took our whisky off us at the door, they searched Ellen to the point of sexual abuse asking her to tell them where her Weed was because “they were going to find it and throw her out.” Ellen does not smoke weed, but the fact she roaches her rizla packets for rollies because she cant be bothered to buy filters made the security suspicious. This also makes them stupid. But the party was extremely fun despite the music of Good Charlotte/30 Seconds to Mars being continously filtered through to the area we were in.

Doug from Sky Larkin and Gareth demonstrate their gunts in Newcastle. This show was possibly the most rock n roll one we have ever played. There was a stage invasion, and someone tried to steal the melody horn. Someone suceeded in stealing the glock beater, and the korg was knocked over. The glock beater has been passed down for many generations in the Campesinos family, so I am asking the person who borrowed it to turn themselves in to their nearest police station before things get ugly. Yep. Alek is Russian, Tom is Italian and between them they can summon enough mafia to make you feel very uncomfortable.

To add to the Rock n Rollness of the evening Harriet and Ellen thought it would be appropriate to don their best bread hats as they headed to the aftershow DJ set which we all did just down the road from the gig. An exclusive album track was played much to everyones apathy, and the classic “Gravel Pit” by the Wu-Tang clan was pulled out. Gareth played M.I.A like 8 times.

To make everyone leave he had to play the most requested song of the night, which was deemed some Pixies song, and was counted by a show of hands from the eight people remaining.

Garlic confit - spreadable garlic potent enough to kill a vampire! I reused this old moonshine jar from the amazing @odonnellmoonshineuk to store one of THREE jars of garlic confit I made last night! (not sponsored, their moonshine is just banging!) The oil is infused with fresh thyme, which was leftover from a mushroom patè I made last month. The thyme was frozen in olive oil and now we have delicious infused oil cubes for frying and making sauces! Recipe: 💫 Pre-heat the oven to 100⁰C. 💫 Peel the garlic cloves, and set aside the peel to make garlic powder or put it into your compost! 💫 Place garlic cloves in an ovenproof dish and cover them with oil - I've used vegetable oil, but I have seen other recipes using olive oil, too. Make sure the cloves are submerged in the oil so they do not burn! 💫 Cook for 3 hours at 100⁰C. 💫 Once cooked, remove from oven and allow to cool before decanting the cloves and some of the oil into jars. Again, make sure the cloves are submerged! Serve with nice bread or crackers, and definitely try it with soft goats cheese because it is SO GOOD! 💫 Store in the fridge for about a month. I have no idea how we're going to get through 3 big jars of garlic confit in the next month 😅 We may have made too much! The camera doesn't fully capture the lovely pink hue and delicious smell of the powdered garlic peel! This will be used in bread when we have time and it should keep indefinitely. To make the garlic powder, we blended the peel with about 2 teaspoons of salt, then separated the powder from the bigger bits of peel with a sieve before returning the big bits to the blender. Labor movements emerge from class conditions. This seems easy enough to accept but too general to provide solutions to US labor’s problems. If we turn to history, it would be hard to argue that major advances or retreats were caused by just one factor — be it economic, political, or organizational — rather than many. Most important labor histories, from E.P. Thompson’s Making of the English Working Class to Jefferson Cowie’s Stayin’ Alive, center on the idea of multiple causality, or what Louis Althusser called “overdetermination.” These authors drill down beneath quantitative indices of social change to the qualitative dimensions of everyday life. They find — again and again — that cultural practices, such as “blue Monday” among nineteenth-century craftsmen, or “disco sucks” events in the 1970s, helped accelerate or inhibit working-class action.

So far, however, most of our contemporary thinking on union decline and renewal has sidestepped this question (with notable exceptions, like the work of Paul Buhle). We focus heavily on unions’ internal structures and organizing strategies while integrating accounts of political economy, labor law, and worker demographics. A common, unstated assumption is that if only the right organizing model, legislative reform, or economic conjuncture presented itself, workers would burst forth in a new wave of membership and militancy. What is left unexamined are the ways precarious employment and the rise of a host of substitute activities have reshaped workers’ practices, identities, and their willingness to take collective action.

In 2015, I went to Woonsocket, Rhode Island, with these questions in mind. It was a storied center of textile production in the early twentieth century and of militant, social-democratic unionism in the 1930s and 1940s. But it had fallen on hard times, suffering the ravages of deindustrialization and failed attempts at renewal, though over a longer time frame than Flint or Detroit.

My visit was not purely academic. During my teens, I had lived in a neighboring town where people looked down on Woonsocket. Earlier, growing up near Lowell, Massachusetts, I spent almost every school trip touring its textile museum’s sanitized version of mill life. And before that, my grandfather and his generation had worked in Rhode Island mills. Though decades removed, his family’s culture still bears the marks of hardship, solidarity, and relative gender equality imprinted by that first wave of industrial capitalism.

When I walked Woonsocket’s largely empty Main Street with its iconic “Bienvenu” sign and scattered former factories, therefore, it was with more than a detached analytic gaze. I spoke with many residents — sixty, so far — and asked them about things I knew: work, wages, unions, politics. Everyone had something to say.

Artie, a forty-eight-year-old out-of-work carpenter told me, “These are hard times, bro. I’ve probably built a million houses, I’ve been a productive part of society, and for what? Some fucking asshole up in Boca Raton?”

Theresa, a forty-two-year-old single mother who had escaped an abusive relationship only to find a cold shoulder on the job market relayed her experience: “I filled out an application and they weren’t hiring anybody who didn’t have a college degree. They wanted people who are ‘future-oriented,’ they don’t want riff-raffs.’’

And Amanda, a mom in her twenties who had moved from Massachusetts for the cheap rent, recounted similar struggles applying for aid: “They denied me every single time saying that I make too much money. But when I open my fridge, I have no milk — like, I can’t afford to get it. I feel like I am always stuck under something. I’m stuck under the things that I can’t have.”

Deprivation was not hard to find. Nor were expressions of resistance and favorable views of unions. But beneath economics lay a deeper source of suffering that I was ill-equipped to understand. It provided both joy and pain in ever-shifting doses, and though more private in practice than union or political activism, it had clear social dimensions. I am speaking, of course, of opioid addiction.

Artie, who came from a “drug addict family” and said, “I do drugs and smoke weed,” was also adamant that “I’m not a heroin head; I’m not a fucking junkie.”

Theresa, who was on methadone when we spoke, found that heroin “helped me do what I’ve got to do. It gets me get through the day. If I could afford it, I would still be doing it.”

And as Kevin, a twenty-nine-year-old former convict and meat-packer explained it: “A few of my friends passed away this year because of the dope. Everybody is doing it — everybody. It’s the culture.”

Drug use and abuse were pervasive in the lives of Woonsocketers — their own, their friends’, their families’. It was a practice more immediate than wage exploitation and the struggle against it more salient than that against employers or the state.

At the level of culture, where identity is formed socially through channeling desire, substance dependence seemed to have replaced wage dependence, and recovery to have replaced unionism. This dynamic, buttressed by the confluence of union decline and overdose death at the national level, confounds most approaches to union renewal. It suggests that workers’ loss of power is no longer simply a deficiency to be corrected, but a problem that has bred its own answers. Responding to these answers in a way that overcomes shame while tapping the moral energy of recovery should be a central task of union activists.

Precarious Work, Distant Unions

When one thinks of New England labor, Woonsocket doesn’t usually come to mind. Places like Lawrence, Lowell, or Fall River might come first, followed by Manchester, Worcester, or Providence. Indeed, Woonsocket is diminutive compared to these peers: its population peak of 50,000 in 1950 was less than half of theirs.

But its primary industry — woolen and worsted textiles — had a longer, skill-dependent shelf-life than cotton-centered production. While those better-known cities’ labor movements were hobbled by the early flight of cotton in the 1920s and experienced the 1934 textile strike as a rearguard defeat, for Woonsocket it inaugurated an impressive rise of worker power under the Independent Textile Union (ITU).

The wolf finally came for woolen and worsted too, as employers headed south in the 1950s. But the intervening years allowed Woonsocket’s mostly French-Canadian working class to take part in the CIO upsurge and taste its material gains.

“[T]hese workers,” argues Gary Gerstle in his seminal history, “made the city … into what Fall River and then Lawrence had once been — the bastion of organized labor in New England.”

Under the leadership of Franco-Belgian socialist Joseph Schmetz and American-born Lawrence Spitz, the ITU organized 84 percent of Woonsocket’s workforce, achieved record wage gains, and sought to wrest control of daily life from employers and the clergy with an ambitious cultural program that Gerstle calls “working-class Americanism.” Though delayed by ethnic insularity and church-enforced piety, class, in something close to its Marxian form, happened in Woonsocket.

And class has continued to happen there, in ways less liberating. Unions have largely evaporated and work, for many, has become intermittent and low-wage. Jobs were something subjects endured and were compelled to constantly seek but were not a stable source of bonding or identity. Even more so unions: none were current members and only a handful had ever been, though many had relatives who were.

The unifying experience of work, once central to the formation of union consciousness, was broken if not absent entirely.

April’s history was illustrative. “I dropped out in ninth grade,” she told me, “and from there I’ve done all kinds of small tedious jobs like babysitting, mostly retail and customer service. That pretty much sums it up, that’s my life. Most of it has always been short term.”

Do Not Move the Gucci

A sigh leaves my lips as I walk into the kitchen after a three day work trip in Manchester. Harry had to stay back in London, and it was pretty obvious by the state of our house. My husband changes clothes more than anyone I know, and they don’t stay in our bedroom. The amount of clothing strung around the house would make you think we had a fashion student living in our basement.

Shaking my head, I place my satchel on the table, removing the tee shirt that is thrown over the back of the barstool. Making my way through the living room and office, I pick up the various items of clothing including multiple Gucci shirts, a few from Harris, and an YSL or two.

“These should be hung. Gucci is not cheap.” I sigh under my breath, taking the pile upstairs to our bedroom. Sorting the clothes, I smell each shirt or trouser to see if it is clean or dirty. The stinky articles of clothing go into the laundry basket, while the others that either need to be dry cleaned or are clean get hung in the closet in their designated areas.

I change out of my dress and heels into a pair of baggy sweats and one of Harry’s shirts from his first solo tour. I always feel better when I can have Harry’s face on my naked boobs. After sorting out my clothes from my trip, I make my way downstairs to start something simple for dinner. Harry texts to let me know he is almost home, and my stomach flips at the thought of seeing him again after being away.

Placing the oven on broil, I move to the pantry and pull out some whole grain bread. I place three pieces of bread on a cookie sheet, and I start to slice some cheese, laying two pieces of cheddar on each slice of bread. Opening the oven I move the rack to the highest point and slide in the pan.

In the blender I combine banana, kale, strawberries, Greek yogurt, and ice and begin to blend. Pulsing the appliance I stop and open up the fridge to grab the milk.

“Hey, beautiful.” Harry says, causing me to jump as I didn’t hear him enter the house.

“Baby!” I place the milk on the counter and wrap my arms around his body, squeezing him tighter than a blood pressure pump at the grocery store. “I missed you.” I say into his chest.

“Mmm.” He kisses my head. “I’ve missed you too. Smoothie for dinner?” I can hear the exhaustion in his voice, and I’m secretly hoping for a quiet night together as I am knackered too.

“Yup. And cheese toast.” A bell dings in my head reminding me that I have cheese toast that needs to be checked on. Releasing Harry from my death grip, I rush to the oven, relieved that the cheese on the toast is bubbly and perfect. “Go change. Dinner is almost ready.” I pull out the toast and move to the blender, pouring in a small amount of milk to thin out the mixture.

“Elizabeth?” Harry yells down the stairs. “Can you come here please?” I finish pouring the smoothie into two glass cups before making my way to our bedroom.

“What’s up?” I say to my husband who seems to be frantically searching the closet.

“Where did my purple Gucci shirt go? It was right here and now it’s gone.” Harry huffs, frustrated at the fact that his shirt is not where he left it. “I also need my black loafers and the socks that go along with the outfit. I have press tomorrow, and I have to take that outfit.”

“It’s probably where it belongs,” I say, walking towards our closet to help him find what he is looking for. “Is this it?” The lilac floral Gucci shirt drapes from the hanger; I show it to my husband.

“No. Not that one. Why would you move it? I put it there for a reason,” Harry growls, searching through the dirty clothes basket.

“Excuse me?” I say, frustrated at his attack. “This house was clean when I left; I walked in and it looked like a bomb went off in a designer store. The amount of outfits I found around the house could clothe a third world country.”

“Oh, don’t be dramatic.” Harry scoffs, folding his arms over his chest. His face is scrunched as he breathes heavily through his mouth.

“Dramatic? Pot, meet kettle.” I say, pointing to myself and then to my husband.

“Don’t you dare. Do you understand how much those clothes cost? A lot, Elizabeth. And you lost them.”

“If you put them in the correct place in the first place, we wouldn’t be having this problem.” I remind him, extremely frustrated by his childish behavior.

“They were in the correct place; that’s what I’m saying.” His irritation pours out of his ears like angry steam.

“So being a massive slob is putting things in the correct place? Is that what you are saying? It drives me crazy, Harry. It’s not THAT hard to put things away. Especially clothing that costs thousands of dollars.” I look in his eyes, pouring out my soul as I explain something that really gets on my nerves.

“Well, that’s who I am. A massive slob. You can either deal with it, or I don’t know; you can…” I capture his lips with mine, not allowing him to finish his sentence. As much as I hated the mess, I loved the man. His hands cup my bum, tapping slightly as a clue for me to jump. Bouncing into his arms, I wrap my legs around his waist and kiss him deeper. Our frustration with one another hasn’t left, but has ignited a fire between us that is aggressive and sexy. Our tongues fight back and forth in an effort to gain control.

Harry moves me to the bedroom, laying me on the bed. My shirt is off before I can say hello, and his mouth is on my boob quickly.   “breathe, just breathe, okay?” the stranger said as I was sitting on the ground. I was numb. It was like my lungs had gotten clamped shut and I couldn’t get a single breath in or out. My body felt limp and I was surprised that I was even sitting up.

  He was laying there. On the ground. Face down. A white blanket had been draped over his body, but the blood gushing out of his cracked skull had stained the fabric. He had been proclaimed dead as soon as the police got there. His lips had been blue and his left arm was broken. When I got there, 4 minutes after the police, the ambulance was on its way.

  I was surprised that the cops let me see him. I was crying, saying I was his boyfriend, and they let me through. They shouldn’t have let me. I shouldn’t have been allowed to see him. But I did. And as soon as I did, I ran off. I ran up the hill and up on the bridge, because that’s what he had done. He had gotten up on this very bridge and jumped off it.

 He must’ve known that he would die right away. The water that used to be under the bridge had been removed, it was just dry concrete under the bridge. He must’ve known that he wasn’t going to survive. It was a 15-meters drop from where he must’ve stood.    At the hospital, the doctors said that he had been there, dead, for a few hours at most. But it was winter, and the cold and the severe hit to the head, had him dead within minutes.    I was standing on the bridge. Adrenaline pumping though my veins. I was going to jump. I was going to jump and join him again. Climbing up on the rails, I hear someone yell from down below.   “Hey! Hey! What do you think you’re doing?” It was an officer, looking up at me. I smiled.   “I’m going to join him.” I calmly said. There was more yelling from down below, but I zoned out, preparing for the fall to my death. It would take minutes for me to die, just like it was for him. Not enough time to get me to a hospital. It was inevitable, when I fell off this bridge, I was going to die.     Suddenly I’m pulled back. An officer was holding me by the back of my shirt. I tried to get free, but his grip was too strong. He said something to another officer, and I was removed from the bridge, out on the street.    “Hey, can you hear me?” A voice registered in my brain. I came back to reality. The painful replay of last week’s memories faded away. I looked around and saw people standing around me.    “Where am I?” I asked. I looked around again and saw my parents.    “Honey, you’re at… Dan’s funeral.” My mom said, hesitating before saying his name. “Remember? We drove here together?” She carried on, but I was standing up.    “Where is he?” I tried to push my way through the crowd surrounding me, but I was stopped.    “Phil, honey, he was lowered just a few minutes ago. Then you ran off…” My mother continued, and her gentle hands gripped my shoulders. She turned me around to face her. She moved to wipe my cheeks. I hadn’t even noticed I was crying.

   “Mom. Can we leave?” I felt like a little boy again, but I couldn’t help it. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my afternoon around strangers, most of them relatives or Dan’s friends. I didn’t want anything reminding me of the fact that he was gone.   My parents lead me out of the graveyard and put me in the back of their car.

   The flat felt empty without him. Doors were left shut, it was too painful to get glimpses of rooms were Dan’s presence used to be. Dan’s bedroom door had remained shut ever since he died. It felt like a knife went through his heart when he was in the lounge, Phil couldn’t imagine what it would be like to go into Dan’s old bedroom.   Nightmares were a common occurrence, images of Dan’s lifeless body filling his brain. Phil would wake up in a cold sweat, and not being able to fall asleep again.   The most sleep he had gotten since Dan died was the night after the funeral. He was just numb, and he didn’t remember anything he had dreamt when he woke up.   When he had gotten back to the apartment, the nightmares had gotten more common, and now, four weeks after Dan’s death, Phil was lucky if he got three hours of sleep.

  Four months had gone by, and Phil was ready for a change. He was moving back to Manchester. London wasn’t home anymore. The apartment wasn’t home anymore. He had managed to get an apartment, with one bedroom.   When he had looked up apartments online, he had subconsciously clicked the “two bedrooms” option, and broken-down crying.   He had gotten offers from friends to move in with him, but Phil didn’t want someone to replace Dan. Phil understood why his friends didn’t want him living on his own, they were afraid he’d try to join Dan. Phil hadn’t told anyone, but he had tried. And he was going to try again.   Phil had it all planned out, he was going to go to the new flat, and hang himself. Sure, it wasn’t the most glamorous plan or anything, but Phil didn’t want anything amazing, he just wanted Dan with him again, and this was the only way to do it.

  Moving day was here and Phil was all packed up, ready to leave. He didn’t even look back at the apartment while walking out. There weren’t any sentimental feelings with him. He just slammed the door shut behind him and locked the door. Leaving the key for the landlord had felt like a weight being lifted off his shoulders. He was free from the nightmare known as his apartment.   Going to the new place wasn’t exciting, Phil was too numb. Empty, empty, empty, is what he told his friends when they asked how he was doing. He was too numb to even try to make it seem like it was okay. A part of him had died, metaphorically and literally.   The cab ride to the train station seemed to go on forever, the driver trying to make conversation, and when Phil didn’t reply for the fifth time, the driver called him a “boring twat” and finally kept his mouth shut, only occasionally mumbling about how insensitive people can be these days.   They finally got to the train, Phil payed, got out, and the car sped off. He was alone. Again. He has no one next to him that he could make jokes to, no one’s hand to hold, nothing. He was all alone.   Twenty minutes later, Phil was on the train. An older man sat down next to him and started reading some book, and Phil put on his headphones and fell asleep.

  After four flights of stairs, Phil unlocked his apartment. Going inside felt like a joke, like this wasn’t the place he was going to stay in from now on. He stepped inside and heard a buzz come from his phone.   PJ: “hey man, hope you’re settling in okay! Sophie and I were thinking about visiting you next week, is that alright?”   Phil sighed and put his phone back in his pocket, making a mental note to answer that later.   Walking through the new apartment felt wrong, it’s too empty, too lifeless, too much and too little at the same time.

  A week had gone by, Phil hadn’t gotten any decorations up, only a few pictures of him and Dan. The fridge was constantly empty, Phil only ate when he remembered to, which wasn’t often. Some furniture was scattered over the flat, a bed here, a table there, nothing was properly organized, Phil didn’t see a reason for it to be neat, he’d be dead soon anyway.   He had to see PJ and Sophie first though, he couldn’t have them worry about him and end up breaking in to his apartment, only to find him dead, hanging from the ceiling.   Phil ended up sitting down and making a checklist of all the things he needed to do before he died. Plan a funeral. Write a suicide note. Skype his parents. Meet with all of his friends (possibly during a housewarming party?), write a will (remember to give his family most of his money, donate the rest), make a video explaining the situation and queue it to after he dies.   Phil stopped writing, water was dripping down on the paper. Phil brought his hands up to his face to feel his wet cheeks. Phil rested his face in his hands, loud sobs escaped from his lips, his body shook, his brain slowly emptying. His sobs echoed off the walls, the walls of the flat becoming stained with his sadness. Phil’s arms eventually gave out, the grief hitting him hard all of a sudden, his breathing getting caught in his throat and soon he was just spilling silent tears onto the checklist.

**   “I’m so glad you’re doing alright.” PJ said, sitting on Phil’s new sofa in the, now filled, living room. Music was blasting from the new set of speakers, people were dancing along to the playlist. The windows were open and some old classmates were smoking by the window, but Phil couldn’t care less.   “Yeah, me too.” Phil said and flashed PJ a smile. The sofa felt odd and Phil wondered if anyone else could tell. It was too hard, not used at all, Phil had run out and gotten everything that you need in a functioning household just a few days ago, he hadn’t even noticed the price tags on the new chairs until 5 minutes before the first guest arrived.   Phil looked around the apartment, attempting to look happy. He spotted Louise, and hastily stood up to leave. She always had a way for seeing right through him, she’d know within seconds that he was actually breaking on the inside. He couldn’t have her worry.   “I’m going to the bathroom; can you greet the new guests?” Phil asked in PJ’s general direction, and then walked off.   Phil pushed through sweaty bodies, reeking of alcohol, to finally reach the bathroom. He swung the door open, to reveal two girls kissing. Phil took a step back in surprise, did he know these girls? It must be someone’s friend of a friend, Phil wasn’t strict as to who was invited. He ended up closing the door, the girls didn’t even notice the brief disturbance. Phil looked around, his eyes getting stuck at the front door. He needed a break.   Out on the street, he could still hear the music blaring from his apartment.   “thought I’d find you out here,” A voice came from behind Phil. He spun around, and there was Louise. “parties weren’t ever your strong side.” She smiled at him, holding up one of the red plastic cups he’d ran out and bought in a hurry.   “No, I guess not.” Phil laughed, looking down at the ground, he couldn’t meet Louise’s strong gaze.   “So, how are you?” she came closer, a caring hand touching his arm. She put down her cup on the ground and gently grabbed both his arms, forcing him to look at her. “Phil?”   He wasn’t supposed to do it. He was supposed to be strong, keep up the act he started once Dan died. He was fine.   And yet, warm tears trickled down his cheeks, with heaving breaths Phil tried to get his composure back.   But Louise didn’t let him, she wrapped her arms around him and calmly stroked his back. Loud sobs echoed off the empty street.   “I know, I know, shh, Phil it’s okay. You’re okay, I got you.” Louise’s soft words filled Phil and made him cry harder.   “I… I miss him so much…” Phil managed to get out between sobs. He wrapped his arms around Louise and held her close, squeezing to try to relieve some of the pressure on his tightening chest.   They stayed like that for 20 minutes, Louise saying gentle things in to Phil’s chest, and Phil sobbing louder with every word.   Eventually Phil let go, feeling his legs give out as he fell down to the ground. He stayed there, not having enough energy to stand up again. Louise laid down too.   “He’s up there, you know? He’s watching over us right now.” Louise said, pointing up at the stars.   “We both know he’s not up there, he’s below us.” Phil joked, letting out a small laugh. Louise chuckled before speaking again.   “And we both also know that that’s not true, however much he wanted us to believe it. He belongs in heaven. He’s an angel now. I always knew he was good, and I know you knew that too.”   “yeah, he was good. Too good for his own good.” Phil sighed. “I’ll always wonder what was going through his mind when he jumped off the bridge. He was doing so good, he said he was and I saw it too. He was filming videos non-stop, his channel was so active. I wonder if he wanted our fans to think he was okay. I wonder if he lied to them. Fuck, I wonder if he lied to me.” More tears spilled from his eyes, and Louise took his hand.   “If he lied, it was only to protect you. You know Dan, he cared so much for you, if he was planning to do something that could hurt you, he wouldn’t ever tell you, he’d try to push you away.”   “Phil, I promise, I’m fine!” Dan’s voice carried through the apartment, hitting Phil hard.   “Dan… can’t you just talk to me? I know you and I know you’re not okay.” Phil moved to walk closer to Dan. Dan’s hand was threateningly gripping the door handle, he was seconds away from storming out of the house.   “Phil. I’m fine. I know what I’m doing.” Dan spat out, voice venomous.   Dan walked out, slamming the door behind him, making the walls vibrate slightly before settling in again. The quiet unsettled Phil, he never did well in quiet homes, it felt too lifeless. A small hint of guilt pooled in Phil’s stomach, maybe he pushed Dan too much this time.   “Phil? Are you okay?” Louise’s voice snapped him back to reality and he sat up, eyes rapid, trying to put the pieces together. His breathing quickened and the air around him felt like it was boiling. “Phil? Oh god!” Louise wrapped her cardigan over Phil, he hadn’t even realized that he was shivering.   “I killed him.” Phil suddenly stopped, and Louise did too. Phil’s words hung in the air and neither of them said anything.   “What are you talking about?” Louise finally said, shaking her head. “You were at home when it happened, you called me right before he did… it.” Louise was careful with her words, but nothing could hurt Phil anymore.   “Before he left… We had an argument. I knew he wasn’t okay, I was just trying to help him,” Phil’s head snapped up to look at Louise’s worried face. “but then he left, and he jumped off. If I hadn’t tried to make him talk he might’ve still been alive today! Louise oh fuck what have I done?” Phil stared blankly ahead, the shivering starting again, but there were no tears. He had nothing left. He made Dan kill himself.   “Look at me.” Louise was grabbing Phil’s face, staring into his eyes. “You did not kill him, you hear me? He jumped off the bridge, he made that choice, for all we know he could’ve decided it weeks in advance, there’s nothing you could’ve said that’d change his mind. He didn’t want to be a burden to you, he loved you too much. Phil, he loves you too much.”   “I didn’t even get to say that I loved him before he left! Did he know? Did he know how much I loved him?” Phil felt like a child again, asking these foolish questions to someone that couldn’t possibly know the answer.   “I’m sure he did.” Louise’s voice was soft, and she was hugging him again.

  “Yes, everything is fine here, how are you?” Phil smiled, looking in to the camera on his computer, his parent’s faces filling up the screen.   “We’re quite well here! Martyn was just visiting; did you hear that he and Cornelia are engaged?” His mom gushed, clearly overjoyed.   “Yes, he told me a few days ago. I’m surprised it took him this long to ask her though, it’s been obvious that she’d say yes for months now.”   “Oh, and Cornelia wants to bring me when she goes dress shopping! Of course, their wedding won’t be until next summer, but she said she wanted to keep an eye on the wedding dress market, so we’re going to go out looking when she and Martyn are visiting again! I think she’d look gorgeous in a nice light blue dress with frills, but she said she wanted it classical and…” Phil zoned out, too tired to pay attention to what his mother was talking about. She didn’t even notice, continuing her rant about Cornelia’s wedding dress.   It seemed like everyone was moving on with their lives except Phil, he was stuck in the endless circle of pain and grief. He’d lost half of him. Dan was gone. Wasn’t ever coming back.   “Phil? Are you alright dear?” His mother’s worried voice made him snap back. “I know it’s been a rough few months…” She trailed off, Phil knew what she was trying to say.   “it’s been a rough few months, but you should let him go.”   “It has been rough, but I’ll manage,” Phil smiled again, “I’m actually going out to see Louise today, she visited and she absolutely hated what I’ve done with the place, so she’s forcing me to go shopping with her.” Phil laughed.   Lies. All lies.   “Oh good! I’m going to get going now, I have to help your dad with dinner, we’ll talk soon okay? Love you! Bye!” They waved goodbye. Phil brought out the checklist, and checking off “skype with parents”. On the paper, there were more things checked off, writing a suicide note, having a party, and planning a funeral. The only things left to do was to write a will and film a video.

  “Hey guys! I apologize for the lack of content lately, as you all probably know, Dan died a few months ago. And… I’m going to join him.” Phil took a breath. “So, if this video gets uploaded, that means I’ve died. I’m sorry, I love you all so much, Dan did too, but I can’t deal with the grief anymore. So, family, friends, followers, goodbye for the last time.” Phil turned off the camera.

  The will was written. The video was queued to go live in six hours. The suicide note and the will were placed next to where he’ll be hanging.   The day before, Phil had gone out to get a hook to screw into the ceiling, and some rope, for the obvious reason.   It was now 10am, and Phil was setting it all up, the hook was securely screwed into the ceiling, he’d tied the rope to the hook.   Phil walked through the apartment, making sure he hadn’t forgotten to do anything. All the blinds were drawn shut, his phone was turned off, the door was locked. Nothing could disturb him.   He was ready.   Phil got up on the chair, looking at the picture he’d hung up of Dan, on purpose of course. There weren’t any tears, he was empty, the pure willpower of wanting to be with Dan again made him want to go through with this.   He stood on his tiptoes as he tied the rope around his neck, tightly enough to suffocate.   He took a struggling breath, and kicked away the chair from under his feet.   The pressure on his head was unreal, it felt like his head would pop off his body. Phil forced his eyes open to look at Dan’s picture. He looked so good that day. Phil had taken the picture on their second trip to Japan, Dan had just woken up and they were sitting on the balcony eating their room service breakfast. Dan wasn’t aware of the picture, Phil hadn’t shown it to anyone.   Dan’s hair was messy, sleep was still in his eyes as he looked out over Tokyo, a soft smile spreading on his face.   Dan was always so beautiful, too beautiful.   “Phil! Why are you always taking pictures of me! We need to go!” Dan said in a stressed tone, but Phil could tell that he was enjoying it.   “Haven’t you ever heard the quote ‘if you ever want to know what someone is most afraid to lose, look at what they photograph’?” Phil laughed, running up to kiss Dan on the cheek, which was a lot more difficult than Phil anticipated since they were walking, so Phil ended up kissing Dan on the jaw.   “Oh yeah? If it’s a quote, who said it?” Dan giggled, smiling at Phil, already knowing the answer.   “It’s an old quote! It was probably some random rich guy, but still, it’s a good quote!”   Phil’s response triggered a fit of laughter from them both, Dan stopping to grab Phil’s face and kiss him.   “I love you, you absolute dork.”   Phil was crying now, he wasn’t sure if it was from the pressure of the rope around his neck, or from the memory.   Phil’s eyes started to close as he got lightheaded. Soon, this thing would be over with.   He tried to get a breath in, his body was trying to save him, but it was no use. The rope was too tight for him to be able to breathe.   His hands started to shake, then his arms, then his legs, and soon his whole body was shaking, the final, desperate attempt, to get free and survive.   No use. The wall in front of Phil darkened and a light emerged from the middle of the wall, the room spinning. This was it, the final seconds of his life. Phil desperately tried to focus on the picture of Dan, but the light was coming closer and closer, soon filling his whole vision. His ears were ringing, eyes rolling back, and his body finally going limp.

  “As you all know, Dan is dead. I’ve been trying to get over it and get better, but it’s no use. Without Dan, I don’t have a reason to live.   I’m sorry.   This is the best thing for me to do, if I live, I’ll never be able to love anyone again. Dan was my soulmate, and nothing can change that.   Mom, dad, Martyn, I’m sorry and I love you. I know you’ll all be filled with sadness, but don’t be sad, I’ll be with Dan again, and that’ll make me happy.   Martyn, I’m sorry that I’ll be missing yours and Cornelia’s wedding, I know you’ll make a beautiful husband and wife. If you ever have a child, please tell them about me, will you?   Mom, dad, I’m sorry that you won’t be seeing me again, but I’ll be watching over you both. I’m sorry that I won’t be bringing home any grandchildren for you, and I’m sorry if I’m letting you down by doing this, it was my only option.   Friends, I love you all so. I’m sorry for doing this. You’ll all forget and forgive me eventually, I’m sure of it.   And finally, mine and Dan’s dear followers. We’re ever so grateful for you all. I’m sorry that we’re ending up leaving you. I hope you’ll forgive us. We love you, thank you for all the memories, and we hope that you won’t forget us.   I’ll see you all soon enough.

Shortages and brittle supply chains

Food: McDonald's UK restaurants run out of milkshakes, and remember that McDs, Nandos and other large chains are experts at supply chaining! Iceland supermarket boss sounds alarm over Christmas supplies.

Haulage:  UK truck driver shortage signals a broken labour market. Food firm in 'drastic' action amid driver shortage. 

Shipping and containers: China-U.S. container shipping rates sail past $20,000 to record.

Labour: Prisoners to plug worker shortage in meat industry. ‘The anxiety is off the scale’: UK farm sector worried by labour shortages. Amazon offers £1,000 joining bonus for new UK staff.

Health care: NHS stops some blood tests due to vial shortages.

Not forgetting: semiconductors and computer chips.

If you want to buy holiday presents that contain computer chips and are imported from the other side of the world, your gift will slowly surf the wave of many of these shortages. (And maybe you should order now!) 

There isn’t one simple cause for these shortages. Brexit, low wages, and Covid are all factors, as are supply chains that were already stretched thin. “Our demand for everything, 24/7, at knock-down prices creates a fragile food chain, vulnerable to shocks.” 

Those fast, efficient, optimised supply chains may now be mis-matched to a changing world: supply chains need to be more resilient to changes and interruptions in politics and borders, climate and weather. More resilient supply chains probably means removing some of the just-in-time optimisations - deliberately making everything less efficient so it can keep going. Slower, more expensive, but less brittle and more adaptable. As the programmers used to say, fast, cheap or reliable: you can pick two. Or in this case, maybe just one.

“Our demand for everything, 24/7, at knock-down prices” is a neat way of describing a very large and complex retail infrastructure. It’s hard to imagine it working in a different way. So one good question is how you sell a world like that to consumers. Perhaps retail leans into the constraints of seasonality, locality, a smaller range…

A report from a shelf edge technology provider: “why store teams are essential to shopper loyalty” (pdf). In store retail, the “system” (replenishment, logistics etc) are fairly invisible. The magic is in the visible bit - the stores and the staff. Online retail is more or less the opposite model: the system is more visible (website, deliveries) and the staff are invisible.

How to make your website greener

Each hour you watched of Netflix in 2019 emitted 36 grams of carbon dioxide, mostly from the electricity used to store and move the data. Transferring data across the internet has been getting cheaper in recent years, which is good. But the total amount of data being sent is obviously growing massively as internet use grows, which is a problem.

So you might wonder how to measure the carbon emissions of your website, and how to make your website greener. Some resources we’re reading:

Tesla’s robot: uncanny valet

“The Tesla Bot, which only exists as a design plan and a person wearing spandex, will be a humanoid capable of lifting heavy boxes and picking out groceries, Musk said.” Tesla did a corporate presentation about AI which included a person pretending to be a dancing robot. Tesla’s robot will be friendly, “won’t fight back” and “we’re setting it so that it is at a mechanical and physical level you can run away from it and most likely overpower it”. These phrases must have sounded like thoughtful and reassuring human-first design to Tesla before Elon said them on stage.

Elsewhere in disconcerting robots, Boston Dynamics robots can do parkour, but not perfectly yet.

#1yrago The EU could give every European the #RightToRepair, but lobbyists will kill it unless we take action!

The European Union is at risk of missing a historic opportunity to bring the right to repair into legislation for the first time.

From Monday 10 December all EU member states will be called to vote on a package of regulations requiring manufacturers to make consumer and industrial products more repairable and energy-efficient in order to be approved in the EU single market.

However, pressure from industry lobbying, especially in key countries with a big manufacturing sector like Germany, Italy and the UK, has severely reduced the repair provisions in the proposed legislation. The latest draft lacks ambition and significantly limits the potential to make repairing appliances easier for all.

Luckily, all is not lost. We (The Restart Project) are urging everyone to support citizen-driven campaigning, which is proving fruitful in some of the key countries opposing the regulation. A German petition promoted by repair activists has created a real stir, garnering over 109,000 signatures and resulting in the Ministry of Environment releasing an action plan stating its full support for repair provisions. And in Italy, a petition demanding that the country stops blocking promising regulation has reached over 76,000 signatures and will be handed over to the Minister of Environment this week by community repair group Restarters Milano. But in the UK a similar petition has been overshadowed by Brexit negotiations. Meanwhile local community repair activists have come up with the Manchester Declaration, calling for more repairable products.

Citizens want longer lasting and easier to repair products and they get frustrated when things break much earlier than they should. There is fresh evidence that people want these changes, and specifically want governments to take an active role, as documented in recently published research by the Green Alliance in the UK and the EU Commission.

Why are these votes so important? For the first time these so-called “ecodesign” regulations take into account a product’s material efficiency over its whole lifecycle, not just the use phase. The new measures acknowledge that a huge amount of a product’s environmental impact comes from manufacturing. This means that being able to repair products is vital to extending their longevity and preventing unnecessary waste. It is estimated that with the new measures in place, by 2030 Europe alone could be saving 140 TWh of energy a year, 5% of its entire energy consumption.

So far attention on right to repair legislation has been mostly concentrated on the United States, with a focus on state-level measures to remove barriers for independent repairers to do their work. Finally, the laudable initial inclusion of design requirements to simplify disassembly of appliances for repair is at risk of being replaced with a focus on effective dismantling for recycling at the end of life.

The ball is now in the member states’ court. Will they show some ambition and push for measures that will benefit all of their citizens, while contributing to creating local repair jobs and reducing the imbalance of power with manufacturers? Or will they bow to industry pressure and miss this rare chance for the European Union to demonstrate that it can lead the way in pushing for better standards for all?

Homemade lemon and blueberry cheesecake! The no-bake recipe is really easy to follow, and is a great dessert for any occasion! Recipe: 600g cream cheese 300g digestive biscuits 200g butter or marg, melted 150g white sugar 150g light brown sugar Juice of 2 lemons 🍴 Blueberry compote: 125g Blueberries 125g white sugar 125ml water 🍴 Note: Extra blueberries and grated white chocolate for decoration. I'm going to be honest, I basically guessed how to make the compote using kitchen skills I've picked up over time, but I have found a recipe to follow for your convenience, and the link will be in my bio. 🍴 Method: - Crush the digestive biscuits into crumbs in a mixing bowl, add the light brown sugar. - Melt the butter and mix it into the crumbs to create the cheesecake base. - Flatten the base into a cake tin (my tin unhinges at the side so it is easier to remove the cheesecake once completed). Store ths base in the fridge while you make the cheesecake. - Whisk all the cream cheese, lemon juice, and white sugar together. Grating lemon zest into the cream cheese is a good way to reduce waste! - Spoon the cream cheese mix on top of the biscuit base, and return to the fridge. 🍴 Now for the super easy blueberry compote: - Pour white sugar and water into a saucepan, stir over a medium heat until it begins to turn golden. - Blend the blueberries in a food processor and add it to the saucepan, stir for 8-10 minutes while it simmers. - Strain through a mesh sieve, discard what hasn't strained through. - You will need to wait for the compote to cool before adding it to the top of the cheesecake.
