Lewes FC and the Death of our Community Club.
For nearly 15 years Lewes FC have never really fitted into the community club mould. Too many directors from the outset simply followed a non-conformist independent directive. The rules of community ownership are enshrined in our constitution and have been neglected. Prior to the launch of Equality FC many directors fought to establish the principles of a community club for Lewes, but since…

The iconic goal that saw Roberto Carlos rise to football stardom Sometimes in football, all it takes is one moment of magic to put yourself on the world stage. Whether that individual or team simply becomes a one hit wonder or goes on to achieve greatness, they are moments that will be talked about for eternity. For Roberto Carlos da Silva Rocha, simply known as Roberto Carlos, it was 'that' goal which had millions wondering "How did that happen?" The scene was France v Brazil on the 3rd of June 1997 in Lyon. It was during the international friendly tournament known as the Tournoi de France, with the other two nations being England and Italy. Brazil were awarded a free-kick in the 21st minute from 35 metres out. Lining up in a way which would become his trademark run up when on set pieces, most people watching thought it was speculative at best from Roberto Carlos given the distance. That all changed in an instant. The Brazilian left back struck his free kick in a way that defied physics. Hit with a tonne of power, the ball went around the French wall and looked to be heading out. Then just like that, it took a sharp swerve back inside and into the back of the net. France's goalkeeper Fabien Barthez could be forgiven for thinking he had to pick up the ball from behind the goal to take a goal kick. Instead, he stood there in complete astonishment as he had to collect the ball from his own net. Neither Barthez, nor those in the stadium and around the globe could quite believe what they had seen. The goal was so unbelievable that in 2010, French scientists produced a document explaining the ball's trajectory. Even Roberto Carlos himself, responsible for this talking point, joked "To be honest, until this day I don't know how I did that". Do yourself a favour and watch the video of the goal on YouTube. The replay of the strike from different camera angles shows the last second curve the ball took that had so many watching in awe. That night in Lyon catapulted Roberto Carlos to world football popularity as the diminutive Brazilian would go on to score more memorable goals and win a host of trophies at both club and international level in an illustrious career. - Rayan Adasi for footballretro.com

Where on The Football Field is Earl Thomas?
While heading into the week I was a mixed bag of emotions. Thinking about last week’s win still had me hoping we were going to go to LA and crush the Rams.  We had the intensity and drive from season’s past. I was ready for it… but we were playing the Rams, who for some reason end up dominating the Seahawks when we play them. Seahawks vs Rams in mind is usually a defense vs defense game. It’s intense, my anxiety can’t handle it, and then we lose. At least that is what usually happens. Today’s game was still a defense vs defense kind of game except we came out on top. I will say the last 8 seconds I was a little worried but thankfully things played out how they should have (at least for a Seahawks fan they did).
Tumblr media
The first half of the game was pretty messy. Actually, let me just go ahead and say the whole game was messy. There were a lot of missed opportunities. What we had been given from the Rams we should have actually done something with those opportunities. We should have had more than 16 points at the end of the game had we of taken advantage for the Rams mistakes. Our offense, while much better this game still wasn’t fully involved in making plays.
I want to create a spin of show of “Where in The World Is Carmen San Diego,” it’ll be called, “Where on The Football Field is Earl Thomas?” It’s almost to the point, I don’t know who makes what plays, I just expect Earl Thomas had some part in it. Earl Thomas is EVERYWHERE. Honestly, he could suddenly be playing Wide Receiver and I would be like oh, Earl is on offense now, okay, sure.
Tumblr media
It was also nice to see Kam Chancellor make some big hits this game. I feel like for someone who was easily given the nickname “Bam Bam” he has been a little quiet this season. Maybe it is Earl Thomas dominating the defense that has calmed the storm that is Kam Chancellor.
Tumblr media
Thomas Rawls. Aside from his rookie season I’m wondering what else he has contributed to the Seahawks. I feel like 2 years ago we were waiting for him to get better, last season we were waiting for him to get better, this season we’re… well he’s here. With this being his first game back was a little warm up before he’ll be back to playing like he was his rookie year? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Jimmy Graham. If a train is traveling at 60MPH and another train is traveling at 70MPH and they both make it to the station at 11:30PM, what are the Seahawks going to do with Jimmy Graham? It was nice to see Jimmy Graham get his first touchdown this season. It would be even better if they would utilize him more. A thing I know I’ve said in the past… but there was a moment right before Russell Wilson was sacked (the first time), had he of just looked left Jimmy Graham was WIDE OPEN. Then of course the question becomes would Jimmy Graham be able to catch the ball?
Tumblr media
How about Russell Wilson’s semi tackle after that interception? While I’m not happy about the situation got to give him props for doing what he did. Oh, and every time Blair Walsh is on the field my heart stops. I can’t watch. My anxiety kicks it into overdrive but somehow, he managed to not let me down.
Boom for Thought: All of the Seahawks need to study how Earl Thomas plays. They need to study that and apply it to how they play. They need to play with the heart that Earl Thomas has, and the strength, and intensity. If everyone played like that, defense, offense, special teams we would be the most powerful team in the league.

This week’s MVP (in my mind): Earl Thomas

For United, the draw suggests that this is often the primary time they need to be won fewer than ten points within their gap seven games in the Premier League era. Their haul of 9 points is their worst tally at this stage of a topping season since 1989-90.

Home ground advantage
Hosting a World Cup can mean much more than playing in front of your fans. There are political, emotional and several external factors needed to be taken into consideration. Under these circumstances, we have seen teams rise and giants fall.
We can go as early as the first ever World Cup hosted in Uruguay. The hosts were 2-1 down at half time to Argentina. Reports and witnesses state that the visitors received some unpleasant high ranked guests in their change room at half time. These unwanted guests came with threats. As the story goes Uruguay ended up winning the game 4-2 and lifting the first ever Jules Rimet trophy.
The 30’s were dominated by Mussolini’s Italy with lots of political power behind them. The Italians were host in 1934 and a fellow European country hosted the 1938 tournament.
1966 saw England lift their only trophy in their long history. The tournament was not short of controversy as the hosts received favorable calls during the tournament as well as the much-remembered final vs West Germany. Did the ball cross the line?
In 1978 and under the old format, Argentina needed to beat Peru by at least 4 goals to classify for the final. Under militant dictatorship, there are many reports of threats and the likes being handed to the Peruvian nationals pre-game. Needless to say, Argentina went on to win the game 6-0 and later on lift their first trophy.
1990 was hosted in Italy with the locals favourites to reach the final. Once West Germany qualified, the merchandise with an all European final was already created. Argentina spoiled the party by surprisingly beating the Azzurri on penalties in the semi-final. The final was a controversial event with Argentina being handed 2 reds and a penalty against. Their request for a penalty was also waved away. The controversy increased as a former president of the Mexican referees association disclosed of a meeting previous to the final where Codesal (the referee for the final) was told that “Argentina didn’t have to win”. Codesal also happens to be the son in law of Javier Arriaga, a key figure in FIFA’s Referees’ Commission in 1990.
In 2002 we saw South Korea controversially make it all the way to the semi-finals including some very favourable calls against giants Italy in the round of 16.
Sometimes a home advantage is a little more than the crowd support.
