i had a lot of fun. Nausicaä's messages of decay and rebirth were so wonderful. also i love the gentle giant bugs and the extraordinary fantasy world they created (it was so beautiful and the OST is so good too)

otherwise, i've been rewatching FMAB in a group with 3 people after 12 years. it used to be my favorite series a long long time ago, so i'm really happy to watch it now that i'm older and understand the world from another perspective (and thus, understand and resonate with the grim reality this series often times presents)

additionally, i've been playing a lot of Blue Rescue Team again lately (i have almost 500 hours on record) because i'm trying to recruit them all! it's a bit of a task, though. there's tons of 1% encounters and they can take a long time to get lucky and join you. (pictured: me recruiting all 1% encounters at once in Howling Forest somehow)

If anyone's curious, this is my overly specific Dungeon Meshi AMV idea. Spoilers ahead, this idea hinges on me having read the manga and supplemental materials.

The basis of this idea is Marcille. Specifically, her age. It's been canonically stated that she's 50 years old, and that -- in plain numbers -- this equates to her being about 5 years old compared to a human lifespan. However, it's also been shown that at age 13, Marcille was the size of and dressed like a 2-4 year old and was still drinking juice out of a sippy cup. I'd guess that this means age 50 is further from age 5, developmentally, and closer to early or mid teens. Early 20's at oldest.

This still means that Marcille is the youngest of the group (aside from Izutsumi), but it also means that she's a literal 13-18 year old kid. Which is a fact that can be analyzed for days -- how it influences Marcille's choices in canon, how it affects her relationships with other characters, how we view those choices and relationships through the lens of creatures with an 80-100 year maximum lifespan ourselves, etc -- but it also lends really well to a trend from when I, myself, was a teenager.

I can't make AMVs myself. I didn't have that skill then, I don't have it now. But I still think it would be hilarious if a Marcille "I'm Just a Kid" AMV existed. The irony of that song and the associations with isolation and lack of autonomy and the pressures of vying for justice and fairness in a world that thinks you shouldn't yet know the meaning of the word playing over a slideshow of her more impulsive/childish "I have made things significantly worse for everyone" decisions and highlighting how she's just a kid in the "doesn't know the consequences of her actions and doesn't care because she hasn't had the life experiences to examine things outside herself" way would be really fun right up until near the end when it shows some of her actual emotional reasoning and speeches and reminds the viewer that all the associations of the song do in fact apply to her and her story arc.

I distinctly remember at least 3 anime series with kids as protagonists/major characters that got the "I'm Just a Kid" AMV treatment. It was usually angst, sometimes comedy, always compelling. The one for Toboe from Wolf's Rain left a significant mental mark, and the ones I saw for Ed and Al from FMA/FMAB made a lot of sense, for example.

It would be funny and poignant and perfectly Marcille and I'm slightly frustrated that I can't make it exist. I don't even know where I'd start -- or who I'd ask to make it for me.

7 -- Okay a specific scene/paragraph I am especially proud of is the below snippet from Broken (the chapter is actually called Little White Lies, all of my chapters are 20k words plus and I just split them up so they're actually digestible lol)

Twilight didn’t sit, but knelt in front of him on the tile floor. He clasped Wild’s uninjured hand in both of his own. “Wild, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, but it’s a lot to explain, and I know that it’s going to sound absolutely crazy, and insane, but…” He looked away, his expression clouded.

Something was wrong. Both his and the Sheikah’s behavior was so abnormal, so off, that something had to have changed—Wild could feel it in the very air, like an invisible undercurrent of electricity.

And somehow, Wild knew that nothing would ever be the same.

“I thought after I lost them a few years ago—the portals, when I ended up alone here—I didn't that they'd—that you'd—Wild, I…” Twilight finally looked him in the eye. The utter despair there, staring back at Wild, frightened him. “I haven’t been completely honest with you.”

He began to speak, and Wild’s world as he knew it shattered.

11--Do you have playlists for any of your fics/wips?

I have one gigantic playlist of all the songs I've ever binge listened to while writing this fic on Spotify, going back over four years. It's named after Legend because I heard one song that sounded like it would vibe with him (I think it was Broken Crown by Mumford and Sons, real on the nose I know XD) and then I just never made another playlist. It has about 10 hrs of songs (which honestly is less than I thought it would be). But like, this thing is all over the place. You Do Not Walk Alone (choral) I remember was specifically listened to write Ch 77. Something Wild by Lindsey Stirling was used to write some of the early chapters of Arc 2. I was listening to Broken Arrows by Avici when I was writing Ch 57-60. And I wrote all of chapters of 63-69 (that count is after I cut 10,000 words XD) on a fever dream of a 10 bus ride (there and back) in high school while listening to Curtains from Beat saber XD on repeat. Towards the Sun from that weird alien movie was chapters 41-50. I also have all of the FMAB opening and closing songs in there as well XD.

SO, uh. Yeah, to answer the question, yes, I have a playlist. I just had a commentor on BDOR recommend some Joel Sunny stuff, so I guess that's the theme of the next few prologue chapters XD

OUUGHGHH OK! :0 i'll probably avoid talking about 03 beyond the tiny filler stuff then for spoilers' sake.. here's macchi's random deets they enjoy about fma (mangahood edition):

an fma japan-equivalent is mentioned in the manga, as amestris is certain countries from europe, drachma is from russia, and xing is from china! it's mentioned as a tiny island that made a form of chess i think in one of the chapters grumman and roy play it together? too lazy to go get the chapter though someone please tell me if you know where this is

ed isn't the only one who visibly ages in brotherhood! he does it in the manga too but it's more noticeable in the anime (and he does it in 03 as well). winry gets more square and ling gets Fucking Ripped™️, and we even see al get even MORE broadened out but i'm not sure if that's age or filling out after being malnourished after so long. either way he inherited hohenheim's chad jawline in the end.

dublith was a town with a bunch of running factories from when ed and al trained at the curtises', but we see that when they're older they've shut down (again mostly manga only)

automail only prospers as a result of the wars in amestris (again mentioned in the manga a few times), and probably heavily dies out after its government is reformed

VAMPIRE!OLIVIER AU

Something about Vampire!Olivier finding solitude in the snowy woods is VERY FITTING. In her early life, she was turned for experiments (from the military). This was around 50-ish years before the canon timeline of FMAB.

Basically the au plays on the story of FMAB but Whoops! All Vampires! Like Al is still haunting a suit of armour, Ed has magic arms and stuff like that! (I have another magic/fantasy/monster au for fmab which I will explain later too BECAUSE I LOVE IT)

But focusing on Olivier since she is currently the brainrot- UNDER THE CUT! (also tw for blood and also minor swearing)

So Olivier decided to flip off Central Village and go live in the snowy woods where no one would find her. There is this "Secret society" of vampires/monsters (The deadly sins) and they basically have control over others who are turned. Olivier also said "fuck you" to them and just went to have some peace and quiet.

Sam plays into all of this by accidentally turning into some sort of immortal bear monster. They don't know they are a bear but basically gets chased out and forced into the snowy forests up north (and Woah! stumbles across Olivier!)

Olivier takes pity of them and decides that maybe having a guard would be helpful. Plus they seem to have some sort of aggression towards central so bonus points!

There is a lot more to their story at this point but I think that deserves more posts because of the cute interactions 0,0

Ok so every vampire/monster has some sort of power. Something that is unique to them. Olivier is able to manipulate blood (similar to blood bending in Avatar:TLA) and also can make blood dangers by somewhat freezing and hardening blood. She can only do this to people who's blood she has consumed. (Points at Sam who likes to go all out in battle and be on the verge of death - Olivier likes to use them as a puppet to go feral - and obviously Sam consents to this - They also like to go feral)

MANY years pass and she is invited to join the military. This is perfect since she has been wanting to take the place of furher for years now. She slowly takes over Briggs from the previous general, yet it starts turning out into something different than just a military wall. It is home to all monsters/vampires to the point people believe it's abandoned yet haunted. Everyone at Briggs has their own unique form! A lot of the soldiers are failed experiments who protect Briggs and find comfort within the walls as well.

So in summary: This au is "what if everything was haunted and abandoned and every civilian thought they were protected by their military from these monsters. Spoiler alert: Civilians are the ones used to create the monsters"

Last Lunesday of the Week

Listening: Mostly going through my library on "random by album" (latest: FMAB, Alestorm) and the local dance/EDM mix radio station's archives.

Reading: Finished issue 1 of "Speculative North", an anthology that I received as a gift many years mack. Also finished What If 2, and shelved a Pope Francis cartoon bio and The Salmon of Doubt, a Doug Adams autobio from found documents on his posthumous hard drives. Not really a theme here beyond cleaning off my shelves.

Recent fun read was H. Beam Piper's The Cosmic Computer, which I found after finishing Little Fuzzy.

It's not a Heinlein story, but the way that Piper draws these frontier worlds feels like Heinlein's settings. But where Heinlein writes stories of things which are solved by individual action, Piper writes (n: 2) about stories which are solved by processes set in motion, and the orderly functioning of the dregs of bureaucracy. Piper believes that Government will function, in a way that is very different from anything else I've read lately besides glowfic.

Writing: Gearing up for NaNoWriMo with more Gundam Iliad prep work. Besides the cyberdeck project, I'm going to be starting a scene-by-scene flowchart of different takes on The Iliad.

Spite/Research: might be editing gundam.fandom.com to add a bunch of missing stuff for Johnny Ridden and some related things.

Watching: It was a two-shot weekend, so I binged Saga of Tanya The Evil on a rewatch. Now I have to go watch the movie.

Injuries: +1 flu shot, +1 COVID booster, +2 elbow needles, -4.5 vials of blood for routine bloodwork (half a tube wasted when the needle backed out accidentaly). Lost a fair-weather biking glove on my way back from the jab, so I'm out like $50 there.

Playing: More Tears of the Kingdom, trying to find more quest items and caves and wells, but not in any organized fashion. Doing this in an organized fashion would require getting one of the checklist apps or signing up for an app, which I do not want to do.

Crafting: On the recommendation of a friend, I've gone and acquired all the parts for making an Ikea Vindriktning into an IOT AQI logger. Should be interesting.

Gotta model some revisions for the next phase of my Pi cyberdeck project, but I'm having trouble getting that Rasbian to load phosh/phoc, which is very annoying. Maybe I should stop fucking around and just use GNOME. Once that's done, I still need to figure out I2C addressing.

Halloween approacheth; it's time to actually sit down and remodel my 2023 NASFiC costume into something that can be worn for more than 4h. Big messes of orange filament in my future; it may be time to build a printer enclosure.

anyway speaking of fmab it still sucks that a solid half the premise of the whole story is the two disabled protagonists are like.. extremely loudly disabled.. disability is a recurring secondary theme within the whole narrative... (re: izumi, havoc, mustang, etc) & still there's only like. 50 works out of 24,000 on AO3 which use the canon disabled character tag. like idgaf i'm not a "your hobbies or media consumption dictates your morality!!! fanfic website as an indicator of public decency!!!" person it just sucks 2 me personally bcos ive got problems disease & i like it when the funny little guys in my story also have problems disease. or like when the problems disease is actually acknowledged u know.

I know it's not a "fancam". I forgot the word for AMV. I thought those had to be animated.

It was directly inspired by this FMAB edit. Which, horrifyingly, I now have 25x more notes than somehow.

I made a considerable portion of it between the hours of 3 and 5 AM because my brain would not let me sleep until I at least started it. If the audio is desynced I blame it on that.

I had not watched SM3 at the time hence there only being clips from 1 and 2. Which, did you know that SM1 is a totally different aspect ratio than the other two? It's like it's shot on a camcorder or something. I had to fake the top and bottom black bars on some shots to make them fit in. Nobody has commented on this yet.

The temptation to make a full version with all the movie spideys has not gone away. It would probably still be 50% Tobey Maguire because Raimi just loves to kick that kid when he's down. Honestly the one thing holding me back is that the lyrics imply he's an unloved foster kid which feels too mean to say when Aunt May is right there.
