FanScription - Caulfield

Let’s pretend, for a moment, that Caulfield was as important as it was made to seem. Let’s pretend they hadn’t introduced it in the same episode in which they destroyed it. Let’s pretend this building that held Michael’s mother and so many more aliens inside for decades didn’t appear only to be blown up a few minutes later.

Let’s pretend that Caulfield was given the amount of respect it deserved.

Imagine if Caulfield had first been brought up in 1x02.

What if Max, starting from the pilot, was already mindlessly writing about Caulfield? We know he loves writing, well what if it’s been something that’s often taken hold of him? Something he couldn’t help but do when he was remembering something from his forgotten past that has to do with where he and his siblings came from?

Imagine we always saw Max writing something in his journal, though we never understood what. Neither, evidently, did Max. He would just be jotting things down, and all of a sudden, it would be as if the words had taken control, and Max would wake from a kind of trance in which he looks down on his paper and sees random words put together that he doesn’t remember writing, and that seemingly make no sense.

This is not the first time Max has written this paragraph without realizing it. With a sigh, he tears this picture out and tosses it on a pile of other pieces of paper on which he’s written the exact same thing, older paragraphs written in crayon, some in marker, some in pen, to mark the passage of time. Of years spent with Max writing this paragraph, never understanding why, but unable to ever get rid of the paper, unable to explain the reasoning behind it even to himself.

It means something, he’d always think.

(The fact that Max always kept this paper signified that, despite telling his siblings that they ought not to worry about where they really came from, he himself has been curious and unable to forget or keep from wondering. This would’ve been meaningful because it shows a connection between Max and Michael in a time when they both -- Michael especially -- feel they have nothing at all in common, and therefore there’s no link between them.)

Moving on. Upon Liz’s return, because his feelings are on overdrive, and because all of their feelings are connected to their powers, Max’s dreams become clearer, more vivid. Max starts seeing tortured people, people he doesn’t know but feels a certain kinship with. And there’s a woman, beaten and bloody, asking for her son. She wants her son to hear her, to stay safe.

This woman is Nora, Michael’s mother. Max, of course, doesn’t know who she is, and begins to wonder whether or not it’s his own mother he sees.

Max tells Isobel of his visions, something he’d discussed with his siblings over the years, but as they’d never seemed to lead anywhere, nothing was ever done about them. This time, though, things are different. Max considers telling Michael what he’d seen, but as usual, he gets into an argument with his brother almost the minute he sets foot at the junkyard. Max realizes that Michael is too resentful already of the luck Max has had, and decides that mentioning that he may have seen his mother would tip the scales on his relationship with his brother for the worst. So he doesn’t say anything.

As the episodes go on, Max and Liz have their moments with the occasional scenes of Max jotting down that same paragraph, scenes that seemingly aren’t important. We also get far more Team Human moments (for another fanscription), much more of them working together.

In 1x09, instead of getting They-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named at the end, we have Jenna letting herself into Max’s house. He told her where the spare key was so she could leave behind sheriff reports to fill out and other documents. She can’t get hold of Max’s cellphone because there’s no reception where he is, and she comes by this time to leave him a note for when he gets back, as well as some Project Shepherd documents. She’s telling him that Jesse Manes has been keeping tabs on him and his siblings, and that he needed to get in touch with her as soon as possible.

Jenna’s about to leave, but then she catches sight of the bundle of torn paper, all scribbled with the same encrypted message that makes no sense. Something about it seems familiar, but she can’t figure out what. This turns out to be the same encrypted messages Jim had written about in his final few weeks, messages all about Caulfield. When Max gets back, Jenna is practically waiting for him. She’s holding a few of the papers and while Max greets her with a curious and wary, “Hey,” Jenna firmly responds with, “I think Alex Manes will know what to do with these.”

Max, feeling discouraged after his failed road trip, tries to wave Jenna off. He tells her he’s been writing that stuff since he was a kid, that it doesn’t mean anything. But Jenna tells him she thinks she’s seen it somewhere before. When Max asks her what she means, she explains about Project Shepherd and Alex Manes’s role in everything.

“Did you say, Alex Manes?” Max says, startled at the thought of this man, and the coincidental timing as he and his brother had talked about him not that long ago.

“He’ll know what this means,” Jenna says confidently, and Max wants to put his faith in his trusted friend.

He goes to see Alex who’s surprised and confused as to why Michael’s brother would come to him for help, and with a glance at Jenna, Max tells him everything he knows. Alex asks Max why he would trust him. Max merely says that it’s because of what Alex means to Michael.

Alex says he’ll try to decipher the message, but that he won’t go forward with anything until Max tells Michael about it all.

“One of us should be honest with him,” Alex says. (It’s supposed to be meaningful because it signifies just how much of a liar Alex feels like whenever he walks away from Michael, when in reality, it’s his own fear that forces him away. He feels like, with every cold word, he’s lying to Michael’s face, not doing what he wants to do more than anything, and just be with Michael. He doesn’t want to feel like Michael’s brother is lying to him, too. It’s a confession and shows the reality of Alex’s feelings and thoughts towards Michael without expressly saying them.)

So Max gathers his siblings at the bunker and tells them everything. Michael keeps glancing at Alex who is busy at the computer attempting to decipher the paragraph Max has given him.

The information then leads them to Caulfield, but this time, Team Human and the Pod Squad go. Together, they all disable the security (which there should’ve been a lot more of) and make their way inside.

(It’s ridiculous to me that in an entire facility filled with aliens, only one member of the Pod Squad was there. I -- what? Also, Noah is knocked out completely, so they just have Liz monitoring him with more yellow pollen, just in case. She knows how important this is to them, and it’s essential they all go, as they all have personal attachments to this mission.)

Similarly to the episode, they find their way inside, and there’s a moment when the Pod Squad look through the cells through which all its residents have come to their glass doors to witness these younger aliens. Max and Isobel don’t know who to go towards first (Max is wondering where the blonde woman from his dreams is), but Michael feels himself guided by an invisible force, pulling him along to Nora’s cell. They all discover very quickly that this woman is Michael’s mother, and not Max’s.

(It’s meant to be a sweet moment because Michael has had to live with the reality of Max being chosen over and over, Max with the luck, Max who’s the most beloved. But at the sight of his mother, he cries because all the years of losing to Max seem pointless in this moment.)

Same as the episode -- Michael attempts to break through the glass (this time despite his brother’s warning), and the alarms go off. Alex is with Flint while Jenna tries to get information on where Charlie is through a flash drive that Alex created that would allow her to access Caulfield’s databases, but Kyle runs back to tell him exactly what he’d told him in 1x12.

Kyle resolves to go get Jenna while Alex goes to get the Pod Squad. Alex gets to the cells to find Max unable to malfunction the circuits without quickening the countdown. Neither of Michael’s siblings can free any of the other aliens, nor can they convince Michael to leave; he won’t even look at them as he tries to free his mother.

Cue Alex, “you’re my family,” and “I don’t look away.” Michael realizes that Alex won’t go if he doesn’t. He has his final moment with his mother, and both Team Human and the Pod Squad make it out.

As Michael stares down the remains of Caulfield, Max and Isobel stand beside him, all gazing upon the ruins of their people, and the camera stills on the three of them, together, watching the destruction of all they never knew they’d needed. Max looks at his brother and sister and realizes; the time for pretending is over. They can’t go on anymore without knowing the truth about who they are.

This was my first fanscription, I don’t know how many more of these I’ll do. It depends on whether or not it’s received well, I suppose. I usually think of ways the show could’ve made more sense, how certain storylines could’ve flowed better. That’s always a big thing for me, so I’m glad I was able to share it this time. Things we found out in 2x12 and things we didn’t find out: 

Jesse is a terrorist.

Helena doesn’t want to kill the aliens. She wants to kill Jesse. She took Mimi to trigger her visions and gather information. She took Cam to get Charlie and Alex to get Michael, so that Charlie and Michael could build the bomb. She played Flint in order to get the schematics. She tried to keep Alex and Flint away from the CrashCon to keep them safe. So Helena is behind all of this or is she working with someone else? Does she have anything to do with Deep Sky? Does Deep Sky even exist? How did she convince Flint to work with her? Why did Flint turn on his father when they still have the same goal and when Jesse already has a finished bomb? Why did Jesse keep it from Flint?

Jim Valenti paid the coroner to get Rosa's body and stored a pod in his storage unit. Was that pod the one Rosa was in? Did Jim put her into the Pod, did he help Noah? He knew Jesse had the pieces of the ship remote. So he took a piece and hid it to protect the aliens? But then what was his involvement in Project Sheperd about? To keep tabs on Jesse? Or was he ok with the aliens being experimented on? 

Alex was the only one being physically abused by Jesse. Flint, Clay and Gregory weren’t. Apparently Gregory doesn’t even know anything about aliens. I’m assuming that Gregory is the oldest and left the Manes household first. Good for him! Please don‘t let anything happen to him! 

What is this whole Kyle/Steph storyline about? Their scene was sweet but also very sad. I feel sorry for Steph. But again, what is this about? Simply to give Kyle a love interest and to motivate Liz to continue her research? We finally got some great group scenes and Kyle is nowhere to be found. At this point he is completely separated from the rest of them. Also, why is Maria the only one who shows real concern for Michael and Alex at the beginning of the episode? Shouldn’t they freak out more? Does Kyle even know that they are missing? 

What is Diego’s role in all of this? Does he have access to the lab? Did he lock Kyle out of it? Who is he working with? What is his motive?

What’s wrong with Maria? Does she have alien DNA although Kyle proved otherwise? Is she affected by the bomb? What will happen to her? 

Did Max kill Flint??? Noooooooo. I was hoping for a redemption arc.

What will explode next episode? The ship remote? The alien bomb? The Manes bomb? All of the above?

Will someone rescue Charlie?

Give me more BAMF Alex.

Give me more Malex hugs.

Your Sunday Baseball Update (1 of 27)

Welcome. It’s Opening Week in the 2019 baseball season and there’s plenty to get excited about. It’s still only March. A lot of the games are freezing. But there are projections a-plenty, so we might as well talk about who’s supposed to be good and the early developments in this young season. Let’s start with the AL East. 

AL East. 

Every reputable projections model has the Yankees winning the division with 96-97 wins. But I feel like that’s how it looked last year as well. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton have elite projections, as do Luis Severino and newcomer, James Paxton. 

The Red Sox look just slightly off the pace with Mookie Betts generally seen as the second-best player in baseball and Chris Sale as (at least) the best pitcher in the American League. His projections would make him a landslide Cy Young favorite.    

Every model I’ve seen also has the Rays in the second Wild Card with Blake Snell and (to a certain extent) Charlie Morton putting up elite starting numbers. 

For the rest of the division, there is some excitement over Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in Toronto, but the Orioles are probably going to be terrible.  

The Story So Far: Sale was horrible in his first start (3 IP, 21.00 ERA). The Sox starters have struggled. And the Blue Jays have the best pitching in baseball. After 3 games, playing the Tigers, but I gotta talk about something.  

AL Central. 

The Indians are heavy favorites yet again (93-97 wins) with a seemingly all-elite staff including Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco and Trevor Bauer. Plus, they have two of the best position players in baseball in Jose Ramirez and Francisco Lindor. 

I feel like the Twins (82-86 wins) have been a trendy pick to win the division, but the rest of the Central looks lousy.   

The Story So Far: Lindor is out indefinitely with an ankle injury. So maybe that trendy Twins pick just got trendier. Plus, nobody in the American League had a better opening week than Jose Berrios (7.2 IP, 0 ER, 10K). The Twins have the second-best pitching in baseball early on. But they probably need to score some runs. The Royals (2-0) are still undefeated.     

AL West. 

Everyone is taking the Astros (96-98 wins) yet again. Alex Bregman is projecting MVP-like numbers, while Jose Altuve isn’t far behind. And Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole look like Cy Young candidates. 

The rest of the division includes Mike Trout, who everyone agrees is the best player in baseball. He also just got that huge contract. So it would be nice for the game if the Angels could get into the mix in October. 

The Story So Far: Ichiro had a great send-off at the Tokyo Dome in two games from two weeks ago that totally counted in the standings even though I’m not sure even the sportswriters are sure how to handle since everyone packed up and went back to Spring Training. But the Mariners have started hot. They lead the Majors in runs scored. Tim Beckham lit up Chris Sale and is my first week A.L. MVP. Enjoy it while it lasts, Seattle.     

NL East. 

The Nationals (86-90 wins) still seem to be the consensus, slight favorite in the East. Even without Bryce Harper in the mix. Every reputable model has them at least tied for first in the division. Juan Soto and Anthony Rendon have elite projections. Max Scherzer is seen as the 2nd-best pitcher in the league. And the rotation also has Stephen Strasburg and newcomer, Patrick Corbin, who are also Cy Young candidates on paper.    

The Phillies (84-89 wins) also look like a playoff team in almost every projection. Bryce Harper was their prize pickup in the offseason. Aaron Nola is also elite.  

The Mets (85-87 wins) are also a playoff pick in every projection model. Jacob deGrom is seen as (at least) the best pitcher in the National League. And Noah Syndergaard isn’t far behind. Edwin Diaz is also seen as a huge pickup in the bullpen.       

The rest of the division has a Braves team (with Freddie Freeman and Ronald Acuna Jr.) that could compete at 79-85 wins. And the (rebranded) Marlins are going to be awful. 

The Story So Far: deGrom and Scherzer went head-to-head on Opening Day, and deGrom came out victorious. And with 6 IP, 0 ER and 10 K, he’s my Opening Week N.L. Cy Young. So the question remains whether he is officially the best pitcher in baseball. Bill James’ pitcher rankings (which I love) still has Scherzer at 1, deGrom at 2 with Justin Verlander, Chris Sale and Corey Kluber rounding out the top 5. Robinson Cano homered off Scherzer in his first AB with the Mets or we might be having a different conversation. The Nats are winless (0-2) thus far without Harper. I feel like Victor Robles has made a lot of mistakes early on. And Mets fans apparently chanted, “Where is Harper?” during the game.       

Harper seems like he’s having fun in Philly. He has the #1-selling jersey in baseball (dethroning Aaron Judge). He wore Phanatic spikes on Opening Day. Then the Phanatic wore Harper spikes the following day. He hit his first home run and got a curtain call after going hitless his first game. He got walked before Rhys Hoskins delivered a grand slam. Andrew McCutchen also homered on Opening Day. Even though Maikel Franco has probably been the player to watch early on. Which all means that the Braves pitching has also been pretty terrible.      

NL Central. 

The Cardinals (83-86 wins) seem to be the consensus favorite in the projection models. Although the Central is all over the place. 

The Brewers (80-88 wins) would probably be the #2 choice in the power rankings. Christian Yelich is seen as the best player in the National League and an MVP favorite in two of the 5 projection models I’ve seen.   

The Cubs (80-87 wins) start the season as the seeming #3 choice, which rubs me the wrong way. Even though FanGraphs has them winning the division. Kris Bryant is also an MVP favorite in two of the 5 projection models. 

The rest of the division seems tough, with the Reds (77-81 wins) and the Pirates (78-80 wins) rounding it out. Joey Votto and Chris Archer have some elite projections in there as well.  

The Story So Far: Lorenzo Cain had a walk-off catch on Opening Day. Christian Yelich has stayed red hot. And that might make up for Corey Knebel being lost for the season. Yikes.    

After a lackluster debut for the Cardinals, Paul Goldschmidt homered three times in his second game before being walked in his attempt at #4. Kolten Wong has also been hot for the Cardinals. Javy Baez hit two home runs on Opening Day for the Cubs, so he’s coming into the season with a ton of confidence. Just in case anyone forgot about him. But Yu Darvish was fucking horrible (he walked 7 of his first 13 batters) in his season debut against the Rangers.     

NL West

The Dodgers (92-95 wins) are heavy favorites again in the West. Justin Turner has some elite projections, as do Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler.

The Rockies (79-85 wins) may be competitive and Nolan Arenado is projected as an MVP in one of the models I’ve seen. The Padres (74-81 wins) might be a sleeper. I’ve already received a ‘hot take’ text message predicting the Padres to win the West, so take that with a grain of salt. Garrett Richards and Chris Paddack have some pretty impressive projections in that rotation. And it looks like the Giants and Diamondbacks are going to be bad.  

The Story So Far: The Dodgers hit 8 home runs on Opening Day, which is a record. Zack Greinke (3.2 IP, 17.18 ERA) was horrible. Joc Pederson is my Opening Week N.L. MVP, edging out teammate, Austin Barnes. So maybe they’ll be fine without Kershaw or Rich Hill in the early season.        

Things sure seem to feel different in San Diego. Maybe that’s just the excitement of the Manny Machado signing. Or the debut of Fernando Tatis Jr. But they went over .500 for the first time since 2015, which is insane. But I also read a story about Machado finding a woman’s wallet at Target and then tracking her down on Instagram. And there’s so many things about that sentence that are incredible. 

Alright. We’ve only just begun. I’ll keep a tab of the current projections as we go. But here’s how they stand as of 3/31. 

PECOTA: Yankees, Indians, Astros. Red Sox, Rays.// Phillies/Nationals, Brewers/Cardinals, Dodgers. Mets.

1. What season did you start watching Supernatural? I wanted to watch it when it first came out in 2005 (or whenever) cause a lot of my friends on livejournal were watching it back then, but I didn’t have tv and internet tv streaming just... wasn’t here yet. Then, when it actually started to be a thing, the show was delving into the whole angels vs demons thing and that didn’t appeal to me at all. (Though, tbh, aliens don’t appeal to me either but X-Files is my forever ride or die show, so...) I finally got around to giving the show a shot in... 2014? I remember watching Tumblr freak out live as the angels fell and I started making my husband watch it with me on Netflix a couple weeks later. He got through 6 seasons before tapping out and I got to them going to Purgatory before my life imploded to the point that I had to take a nearly year long break from it. I binged the rest of the show at the beginning of this year.

2. Who was the first character you fell in love with? Dean. I knew he’d be my favorite back when I was watching the fandom form on livejournal so that wasn’t a surprise at all.

3. Who was a character that you hated at first but grew to love? Oh, I think I’ve hated all of them (including the brothers) at one point or another in the show, but I also love them all. Maybe Crowley? I can’t remember if I hated him though...

4. Which character would you most want to be in a long-term relationship with? Eh, none of them.

5. If you could go on a date with just one character, which one would you choose? Same as the answer above. Wait, no, I take that back. Abbadon. That would be awesome.

6. What would you do on that date? Well, when a girl likes a girl... lol I don’t know, whatever terrible thing she wanted tbh.

7. Which character would you most want to be like? Charlie was amazing. Lisa deserved so much better and was amazing. Sam is such a fucking optimist for all the shit he’s gone through.

8. Which character would you most want to see brought back from the dead? CHARLIE CHARLIE CHARLIE!!! And Kevin and Eileen!!! And Alicia, because her death gave me a weird sort of bitterness.. she was such a fun character with so much potential behind her and without her Max is just a depressing character to me so yeah. <-- I’ll take this answer too. I’ll add John in for a temporary back from the dead thing for closure.

9. Which character would you most like to punch? Metatron. I didn’t care for his character at all. Lucifer could be erased from existence at this point and I’d clap and throw confetti too.

10. Who is your absolute favorite character? Dean and Cas. I love the female villains, but TPTB have no idea what to do with female villains so they’ve always been under utilized. And Benny, I lurve Benny.

11. Which “Big Bad” do you think was the worst? Lucifer can just go away now. I don’t care about him at all anymore. Metatron was boring.

12. Which character are you most like? Dean in a lot of ways. With some of Charlie’s sweetness and Abaddon’s bravado mask.

13. What death hit you the hardest? Charlie because it was just so dumb an unnecessary. Same to Eileen. And Kevin. Alicia with the above mentioned reason too. Bobby. <-- Keeping this answer too. I’d like them to give Mary some real growth too, since she was always the biggest bullshit death before they brought her back. Benny too.

14. What season finale hit you the hardest? Fuck if I can remember right now. Probably season 3 at the time.

15. What are your ten all-time favorite episodes? Oh hell. I don’t remember episode names for the most part, but: Mystery Spot because Gabriel/Groundhog’s Day; the one where Demon!Dean went after Sam with a hammer; the LARPing one; any of the episodes with Benny/Purgatory flashbacks; Gabriel’s first episode (I think that was this one) where they boys were describing the case from each other’s point of view or whatever... it was a great rendition of “Bad Blood” from The X-Files and made me nerd out; Cas’s fall episode where he was first dealing with being human and coping with it tore my fucking heart out and was awesome even though I know it’s wanky too; the episode where Metatron kidnapped Cas and Cas got to talk to Gabriel again too.

16. What’s been your favorite season? 8/9/10 that whole stretch is awesome for me.

17. Who is your favorite angel? Castiel  and Gabriel.

18. Who is your favorite demon? Abaddon and Crowley

19. Who’s your favorite evil character? Abaddon and Bela, though the latter was more grey than a truly evil character.

20. Do you have any Supernatural ships? Destiel, Saileen and I can get down with some Sabriel once in a while.

21. Who’s your favorite supporting actor? I loved Charlie and Abaddon and Chuck as God and Gabriel.

22. What’s your favorite quote from the show? Sam’s speech about feeling too unclean to ever go on a quest killed me. I know there are others, but my brain hasn’t held onto them.

23. If you could cast one famous actor in an episode of SPN, who would you choose? I’m down with the John Borrowman as the Impala idea, though I think I’d prefer it if she were played by a black woman instead of him. Or that they went for the fanon idea of the Impala appearing different to different people, so Borrowman for Castiel and someone like the actress who plays Maize on Lucifer for Dean and a Mary look a like for Sam.

24. If you could write your own episode, what kind of creatures would you like to see included? I’d love to see a creature that sends the boys back in time and they have to get help from Castiel in his female vessel that they showed from season 12.

25. Who’s your favorite girl that Dean’s hooked up with? Lisa or Cassie. He loved both of them and the boy deserves nice things.

26. Who’s your favorite girl that Sam’s hooked up with? Eileen (even if they didn’t actually hook up); Amelia; Sarah Blake and Ruby 2.0... even though it was an unhealthy hookup on the show, you could see their chemistry and she’s hot AF.

27. What are some of your favorite convention moments? I don’t really keep tabs on the conventions.

28. If you were going to guest star (or be a recurring guest star) on SPN, how would you want your character to be described? I’d play a villain all day long. I’d be happy with some kind of Dark!Charlie / Abbadon hybrid character.

29. What do you hope to see in the next season? To see Sam get to explore the shit he actually likes instead of what he thinks will redeem himself because of his guilt over the demon blood thing (which is not his fault). For Cas to find his place and his inner strength again. For Dean to accept and embrace the fact that he can have happy things. For Mary to choose where she wants to be and how she wants to be.

SXSW 2017: Free Party RSVP Roundup, Part 1

South by Southwest 2017 is just around the corner, and to help you keep your eyes on the party prize, we’re rounding up the RSVP info for the best of the free parties, right here, right now.

All of the events below require you to RSVP, and we anticipate that they’ll all be open to people without badges or wristbands. However, some parties do give priority entry to badge and wristband holders, and some become badge-only in the evening hours — we’ve identified those in the listings.

We’ll be posting batches of new parties right here in the days ahead and compiling the full list on the “SXSW” tab at the top of this page — so keep checking back for updates!

A few tips for maximum enjoyment:

1) SHOW UP EARLY. Parties sometimes hit capacity very soon after they open, so there’s a good chance that you’ll be dealing with some pretty serious lines by mid-afternoon. Plan accordingly and have several backup options just in case. Also be aware that free drinks and (especially) free food may not last for the entire event, so try to get there when doors open whenever possible to maximize your chances of getting the good stuff.

2) RSVP for as many events as possible, even if they conflict, and even you’re not sure you’ll actually go. It’s good to have options (see tip #1).

3) If an event page says the party is sold out, check again later (and get on the waitlist if there is one). Some organizers reopen their lists and start accepting more RSVPs closer to the event.
