Very rarely do I see people ship Fern and Huntress Wizard but when I do I can’t help but feel like they have a fundamental misunderstanding of both Huntress Wizard and Fern’s nature. Like on the surface it’s “haha!!! Plant boy and plant girl!!!! Huntress Wizard likes Finn and Fern is Finn but a plant so they’re perfect for each other!!!!” which just like, completely ignores everything core to Fern’s existence and Huntress Wizard’s complicated feelings toward love.
Fern is just more than just “Finn but plant”. He is LITERALLY Finn, but tainted with a curse. He is built out of fucked up evil twisted magic. Fern spends his entire existence finding his own identity and trying to reconcile Finn’s natural desire to do good with the corrupting nature of the grass curse. Fern’s struggle is internal, and he don’t have the emotional capacity for romance until he sorts his own shit out (which unfortunately due to the curse, he’ll never be able to do).
There's also the matter of the huge gap in emotional maturity between Finn and Fern. The Finn inside the Finnsword missed key moments of emotional development that our Finn experienced from season 6 to 8. Fern wasn't molded by key experiences like The Visitor, Crossover, Hall of Egress, Flute Spell, Don't Look, or The Music Hole. In particular, the massive emotional growth Finn underwent in Flute Spell is what allowed him to start a functional relationship with Huntress Wizard, and Fern lacks that growth. Fern is essentially a version of Finn stuck in season 6, and lacks the emotional intelligence to properly handle a relationship with anyone, let alone somebody as emotionally sensitive as Huntress Wizard.
But enough about Fern. I’m not a Fern expert, and this is only my B-rate interpretation of his character. The REAL egregious mischaracterizations of a Fern x Huntress Wizard ship lay in people just not understanding Huntress Wizard properly. For starters, you have to understand that both Fern and Huntress Wizard are two very magical beings, but their magics come from different sources. Huntress Wizard is a wizard (surprising, I know) and Fern is a CURSE. Fern is an unnatural, malicious magical force. Huntress Wizard would be off-put by Fern’s existence because he is a perversion of the natural world that she ties herself deeply to. Huntress Wizard assumes the role of a sort of “keeper of nature” in the forests of Ooo (as seen in her quest to slay the Grumbo for being invasive in The Wild Hunt), and Fern is a disruption to that natural order. A relationship between the two would never work because Huntress Wizard would be uncomfortable with Fern’s very existence.
There’s also the matter of why Huntress Wizard is attracted to Finn, and how Fern lacks many of the qualities Huntress Wizard likes Finn for. For starters, there’s the matter of emotional development I talked about before. Finn is extremely well-put together during the time he spends with Huntress Wizard in Flute Spell, and it’s easy to see how deeply he respects Huntress Wizard and her objectives. Finn isn’t determined to help Huntress Wizard with her mission to talk to the Spirit of the Forest out of a blind infatuation for her, but out of his natural drive to help people. Finn is very in-tune with his emotions (and can handle rejection like a champ), and Huntress Wizard can see that in him. This emotional in-tuneness is part of why Huntress Wizard so deeply respects Finn. Huntress Wizard seems to value her ability to stay true to her feelings (which even she struggles with; see my Flute Spell megareview for more) is drawn to his honesty and selflessness. Unfortunately for Fern, whether it is because of his lack of emotional development or because of his curse, cannot handle all his conflicting feelings inside him and doesn’t have the same kind of emotional stability that Huntress Wizard is attracted to Finn for.
I could go on and on and list even more reasons to why Fern x Huntress Wizard wouldn’t work, but those stray further into the “headcanon-ey”school of thought and I’m trying to be more objective with my character analysis as possible. I know being complexly objective is impossible and you have to leave a little room for individual interpretation but overall the entire ship is built on a very flimsy basis of “what if the two plant people liked eachother” and that’s it. There’s way more to these characters that make them special, and reducing them to just their visual similarities does a disservice to their character depth and creative potential.

Hello,
Do you ever wonder if part of ferns jealousy of/anger towards finn came from the fact that finn had a jake? Like obviously fern isn't finn but it must be acknowledged that part of him is. And the part of fern that is finn came from the finn sword, and the finn swords jake is sleeping forever as prismo, so in that moment where our finn had to wake up his Jake for prismos plan B all the relief our finn felt, and all the fear he felt beforehand, fern/finnsword finn never got that, his jake was gone then before he could get him back he was turned into a sword and then cursed by the grass sword and then he was fern...idk if I'm even making sense but if ykyk lol sorry this was long just something I was thinking about
fern not having a jake always crushes me whenever i think about it
i don’t think jake ever fully trusted fern (atleast not till he died for a 2nd time) and ill never get over that. it’s heartbreaking
and its ok, i like hearing peoples thoughts on fern :)

You have a way of finding sympathetic/kind of pathetic antagonists that are clearly neurodivergent and if given the chance, would totally be better people but never really got that chance
Fern and Hordak and Spot
Tumblr media
[Identify my Blorbos!] (putting this at the top bc I made a really long post lol)
Anyway,
[Incorrect buzzer]
You were pretty close there till you said all of these guys would totally be better people but never were given the chance, especially when you said spto Gideon Graves. My man was SO down to do evil. At his best he's harmless and pathetic. But the dude still is pretty pro-doing-terrible-things, even if its not to Scott and Ramona in specific. Could he improve? Sure! But I'm of the belief that anyone can. It sucks that he wasn't treated nicely as a teenager but like. Dude, get help. You clearly can afford it. You just don't want it/don't think you need it.
Gideon actively chose to become the CEO of G-man records and he chose to use his vast power to make a girls life a living hell purely because he felt ENTITLED to her and her love. That's fucked up!!!! Hes' a sick shit in all versions and I truly do love him for that. He and Julie really are bitch x bastard! <3
Fern and Spot both are interesting ones, as they're both cases of "they made their own choices", only, the Finn part of Fern was doing something good (reviving Prismo), he just didn't know that meant he'd become the Finnsword, and the Emissary from Beyond is....Complicated.
Spot, however...
....Look, we can theorize as much as we want about his hypothetical past and what drove him to do it (bc I doubt anybody that works at Alchemax is fully stable), but before all this shit happened to him, he CHOSE to work at Alchemax, which was a morally dubious decision at BEST. I don't think he had bad intention in the slightest however, it's just that Spot....Seems to have a bad habit of not really caring about anything else that's going on around him as long as he's getting what he wants. Negligent is the word (Funny, considering that's what he accuses Spider-Man of being). Also nobody made him go back for the dark matter, and he could have evacuated like everybody else*
Either way, both Fern and Spots actions definitely come from a place of desperation and severe emotional distress. And they're both guys that really lost their entire lives due to something out of their control**, and just weere driven to go....Way too far. They also actively decided to be bad guys because villainy provided them with the validation they needed. Hopefully Spot won't get killed off in the end like Fern did. Haha!
Hordak is definitely what you described though, because we were literally SHOWN that through the existence of Wrong Hordak! He's from a cult and heavily indocrinated with horrible beliefs that he deeply internalized, especially because of his relationship with his disability and the way Horde Prime viewed him for it. This is also seen through Entrapta, who....Yes, helped him do evil thing too. But they were adorable. And ultimately, it was her that helped him realize his worth as a person and take the step towards good (although that was a personhood thing, not a redemption arc, lol). But through proper support, Wrong Hordak was able to grow and develop in a way that Hordak just wasn't given the opportunity to, so....Yeah.
Hordak never got the chance, and Fern kept getting screwed over by the universe and his own low self esteem. But Spot made his own choices in life. He is absolutely the most selfish person out of the three.
And also. Is, yknow, the most experienced in life/an adult. (I already talked about Gideon who is the worst but like I said he doesn't even come close). Yes what happened to him was horrible, yes he didn't deserve so much mistreatment for it, but still. The chain of events started because of his own decisions until it spiralled out of his control, from where he doubled down for a variety of reasons indicating that he really needs the intervention of a trained mental health professional.
I think I went way off course here.
Sorry. Haha.
* Yes it's likely that he felt like he had to go back and save the remains of his work, might have something to do with Olivia stealing all the credit for the collider and his desperate need to be recognized. Still a bad idea though.
** Spot may have done the physical aspects of his life going to shit to himself but I'm not blaming him for the way other people treat him for what is now out of his control. It's not like he asked to be what he is, or to be mocked and lose his livelihood for it.
You get a 1.3/4 because the description is correct up to a point but it entirely fits Hordak.
SO close!

because adventure time tells us that long after it is over, after finn is gone, he will always be with us deep down.
finn had three arm prosethetics (finnsword, fern, the metal arm) and they were all extensions of him. even in finn’s absence, those extensions remain. fern was replanted as the tree. the metal arm survived, reminding bmo of finn and the story of adventure time. and the tree held another finnsword, one to continue the spirit of adventure
we might grow up and childhood might end, but our youth (finn) will remain inside us. we will find it in others. we will keep living :-)

I'm betting the Penny Sword is gonna be like the Finnsword thing from Adventure Time
That and/or the sword will be a sort of reincarnation of Penny, not quite the same, different in some ways (that way her death still has impact), bit it is her
Oh, and she'll probably have the ability to transform between sword and human forms, Penny will become an equipable ally

first post and it's just going to be some finnfern rambling
Okay so a possible au where Fern somehow survived... Everything. He's still around. Don't question it.
Finn is incredibly protective of Fern, after watching him 'die' TWICE and both times being his fault somehow (I'm counting Finnsword being broken as one of the times, if his disintegration somehow still happens but is reversed then that's THREE times and suddenly Finn is nervous that even the faintest breeze will kill this grass guy and it'll be all his fault!!), Fern is torn between finding this incredibly frustrating but also flattering because... It's nice to be cared about. It's really nice to be cared about. Other people care about Fern, sure. Or maybe they don't. He can't fault them for not caring. He's just some weird grass clone, right?
FINN DISAGREES. Fern is good and Finn is DETERMINED to prove this to him. He'll be anything Fern needs! Fern thinks he's unlikeable? Finn likes him! Fern thinks he messes everything up? Finn'll be his hypeman! No more self-doubt for THIS grass guy, he won't let that happen!! Fern thinks he's unloveable? HehehahahehahHUHA WELL... 👀

What do you remember from being finnsword?
Tumblr media
"I remember most of what I saw from the sword, and if I ever see Bandit Princess again I'm going to make her regret every single evil decision she's ever made in her entire existence, from whatever her first life was to her current as a cruel, self-serving, thieving tranch."

@masterporky replied to your post:
amber is kinda perfect for him lmao. cause yknow. trees
honestly yeah, esp considering how the lich was imprisoned in amber for a while...
i usually associate finn with blue gemstones (cuz of finnsword, among other obvious reasons), but the amber kinda matches his hair so it works lol. plus google says blue amber is a thing? it’s very pretty
