A name-on-wrist soulmate AU where being outed by a same-sex name is still newsworthy if you're in professional sports and is a very real concern for some NHL players. Despite the shifting attitudes, no one in the sport has ever come out publicly.

Tyler has always felt relieved that 'Jamie' could be a male or female name, it makes hiding his sexuality a lot easier. Jamie's not been so lucky.

"Hey," Jamie says, pounding on the door. "Hey, open up!"

The dogs shut up.

"Hi, shit, sorry," says the stupidly fucking gorgeous man who opens the door in a tank top and boxers. "Shit, were the dogs loud? They get really excited when I come home."

"It’s three in the morning," Jamie says. On cue, a dog pokes its head around the corner to the entryway and bounces over to the — to this guy. It’s followed by another, browner dog, and Jamie has a moment of surrealist sleep-deprived horror where he imagines an infinite string of dogs forever bounding gleefully towards —

"I work two jobs. I’m Tyler," Tyler says, extending his hand. "Do you want to come in?"

Well, he’s not doing anything illegal, Jamie thinks, shaking it, because no criminal in the history of crime has ever willingly invited a cop into their house, and there is no one in the city of Dallas who hasn’t pegged Jamie as a cop within six seconds of meeting him.

Jonny wears it, Patrick gets the sword. Win-win.

Sidney Crosby, Tyler realizes, has just asked him about hooking up. Sidney fucking Crosby. Tyler blinks at Sid and takes a long drink of water. Because, out of a whole room at least 30% of which would happily give Sid what he’d just, hesitantly, asked for, Sid chose him.

a couple of repeats here, just to keep them all together,but these are some of my favourite always-a-girl fics, they’re mainly het, with a real fucking good f/f thrown in the mix.

For Rusta, who requested my top 5 Marnsthews recs and top 5 McStrome recs. These are just ten fics I love; I can’t rank all the fics I’ve read, I love so many of them. If you’re not on this list I still love you I promise!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just chose 5 that I loved at random from each ship. I definitely forgot, like, some of my favorites, because that’s what happens when someone asks me to choose 5 of my favorites, I’ll forget something I read a while ago and then I get to rethinking and I’m like “wait what about that one” so I just chose the first 5 that came to mind and forced myself to commit to them.

Marnsthews:

bring it to the top by theundiagnosable everything you could ever want out of fake dating. Hits everything a fake dating fic should. Every line is a gem. I love this fic so much.

The Inevitable Decline of the No Sad, Big Smile Break-Up Service by luxover college au in the same ‘verse as “Pond Ice and the In Between,” features all of my faves interacting with each other. I read this last night and its just a Great Time™ that references a lot of real-life cuteness.

as long as it's about me by Anonymous enemies to friends to lovers, again, the kind of fic every pairing should have one of. Does a Really Good Job with it too.

colours and promises by theworldabouttodawn I mean... it’s just... so fluffy and soft... stuffed animals and snuggles.

the a-to-z of you and me by capebretons I love this fic so much. If you want to see Auston pine, then this is right up your alley. There’s some sadness and a lot of love. Definitely a worthwhile read.

McStrome:

gravel to tempo by capebretons angsty boarding school AU which was the first McStrome fic I read. There’s also a Marnsthews sequel! It has a happy ending, but you gotta get emo to get there. Which, like, is the kind of fic I need sometimes. Also, there’s a knitting club.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas by CheapLemonIceLolly aka the fic with “data jesus,” where no matter what universe we’re in, Connor McDavid needs to be Extra Good™ at everything. Sidney Crosby too, tbh. A fun holiday AU about the temps trying to win an office Christmas decorating competition. Truly, I love it.

take my heart and take my hand by somehowunbroken a soft d/s au. Dunno if that’s really your thing, but it’s incredibly sweet. Lots of warm and fuzzy feelings about this one. I read it, like, once a week.

all i ever wanted (was your sweet potato) by bluejayys, meerminne in which Dylan sees Connor in a grocery store at 1am and writes an adorable Missed Connection on Craigslist. It spirals. It’s great, wonderful, perfect, I love it.

Princely Reasons by forks I reread this recently and honestly it’s just. Really great. Connor’s a prince, Dylan’s a commoner, they’re roommates (oh my god they were roommates) and man if you want some friends to lovers, this will do it.

I know you didn’t ask for Mitch/Dylan but it’s a really great pairing and I’m obsessed with it too. hand holding, and other habits of highly effective otters by electrumqueen is a masterpiece. It’s part of a spontaneous animal transformation ‘verse, called i wanna hold your hand, and literally every story in it is great but be special is very near and dear to my heart if you want some WJC2017 feels.

-burn our fingers and change our names by linksy: i personally tend to avoid patrick kane in fics (i think everyone needs to figure out their own comfort level with this and if you read fics with him where he’s the focus or background, cool! it’s not for me but we can all consume the media we consume) but i just. love the tyler/jamie fics in this series (and the jordan/taylor and dylan/alex ones) and the way this person writes omegaverse and also!!! the level of miscommunication!!!! a gift!!!

-something good and real and right by blamefincham, thistidalwave: mmmm i’ve read this and it’s tasty

-things in nature can shatter by mayhem10: i have not read this but it appears to feature my favorite hockey specific trope (sidney crosby mentoring gay hockey players who are dumb and useless) so v excited to read

-texas heat by rest: i’m a sucker for fics where one isn’t a hockey player so i do think this one is lovely

-colder weather by inlovewithnight: this is actually one of my favorite career ending injury fics and i’m looking forward to rereading it this weekend so it can hurt my feelings

-faster (series) by lightsgetin: haven’t read it, but it seems horny

-once more with feelings by spiritsflame: this was on my comfort fic rec list and tbh it’s one of the first hockey fics i read and it makes me feel so many things and usually i hate time loops but this one is perfect so

-all this learning here is by you by nighimpossible: this is what i’m currently reading bc it keeps getting rec’d to me and i still haven’t read it and so far it’s good!!

-the constellations we make by hananobira: very intrigued by this bc i am an astrology bitch

-i made a tidal wave (just to get close to you) by orphan account (rip): havne’t read it but i am a sucker for college aus (don’t ask me why my college experience was just be getting stressed and coping by sending astrology memes to everyone i knew at 4 am when i should have been studying or asleep)

herb’s electronic series, by mcspot: this is a lovely little series based largely around the preds with three different pairings. it’s also a coffee shop au, featuring the worst barista, and brings me so much joy. there’s a little bit of mistaken identity in there for you, as an extra treat. and honestly? it’s the found family that does it for me

cut to the feeling, by canary: this one is gonna get recommended on my first list (stay tuned, it’s dropping tuesday) but it’s gonna be here, too, because it’s 68k of perfection. tknp where tk teaches gym and nolan has a secret child. you will experience the full range of reading this (i sure do, every time)

we could be magic, by barefootstarz: a fun series where witches are real and they have lil familiars and it has pairings for the flyers, stars, avs, and leafs. if you’re into magic aus, you gotta read these ones. it’s such lovely worldbuilding and you don’t have to read them all (but you really should) as long as you read the first for the pairing

ain’t never had a love like mine, by bluejayys: this is an alex galchenyuk/brendan gallagher fic where alex is a hockey player and brendan isn’t but get this-they match on grindr. this fic has it all, and is such a blessing

thought i knew what i wanted, i never saw you coming, by skyscraperblue: no one ever asks for a dylan strome/erik johnson sugar daddy au, but i personally think that they should. rip to connor being the worst in this, but i’m a sucker for a rare pair and this was so fun

eleven, by icecapades: i told myself one per pairing but this onen is just SO FUN if you’re into mistaken identities as well, so i simply had to include it. another alex galchenyuk/brendan gallagher fic where alex is a hockey player and brendan but this time they flirt via chirping on twitter

the kids are alright, by lighthousetowers: mattdrai where matt is a teacher and leon still plays for the oilers. it’s a really well done fic because both of them are both good on their own and independent, but kind of just really work together

last call for happiness, by talahui: tyson/gabe where gabe is still a hockey player, but tyson isn’t and goes on the bachelor. i....love this fic so much? it’s one of the very first i read when i decided to get into hockey rpf and every moment of it is a gift
