❆series: part 7/7 of WolEstinien Week 2021
Shadowbringers was a nightmare for Surkukteni. From all she'd put on the line with little to gain, she's emotionally drained - not at all helped by her brother's romantic drama that resulted in him being even closer with his two partners. Needless to say, the loneliness and ache in her chest has been fairly prevalent for quite some time now. All she wants is company - physical or otherwise - but she's not even officially with Estinien and she still wants for his company?
A bit of a tangent from that 5.1 scene where Estinien shows up to recount what happened in Garlemald. Lots of yearning in this one, especially with these two emotionally constipated dumbasses that just need to confess already.

Destruct
Before, the Lover’s sky was bathed in blues. The cyan of risen morning, the indigo of moonlit shroud, the cerulean of imperial breath, the overcast of inexplicable tension. They believed her skin to be of their inclination — the spitting image of their nightly hue. She became the color itself.
Her home above them is now wrought in crimson.
Comets leaving stardust in their wake are surely the Warden’s tears. Even in mourning, she is burning justice. Her sister is everything that is nothing, in grey clouds that part for little more than chain lightning let alone this, in the little peaceful space between the Lesser Moon and the horizon. There is no question which is Dalamud, the ravenous beast — he takes center stage, rearing towards his prey with the rumble of thunder in his belly.
An orphaned clan of young miqo’te gaze upon the destruction of the sacred, the untouchable Twelveswood. Thin blankets and gathered planks — this is the lot of their feeble attempt to bolster the defense of the Shroud canopy, under which they huddle in immobilizing fear. For each shooting star that alights elsewhere, for each ilm that Dalamud falls towards anywhere but their godless sanctuary, a breath of relief is relinquished.
The sky would rage on and on, Azeyma’s wrath juxtaposed to Menphina’s sorrow. Dalamud would continue his onslaught. At the peak of noon, the youngest among them awaken in the middle of their slumber and find all to be the same — except the prickle of aether disturbed. She climbs to the top of the canopy, closer and closer to the Mother Moon.
Entire territories of the forest are nothing but smoulder.
The eldest has been awake all night. Anticipating their destruction. Perched on tip-toes, ready to run at any sign of impending doom.
She tells him that it’s over. Even his optimism is cynical.
“Well, then... Aren’t we the lucky ones?”

Only 2 short shippy prompts all month! All 4 modern girls got a couple spotlights, various family cameos and backstories, a future prompt as is tradition, Zaine had a few posts, a few NPC-only scenes, a LOT of Endwalker, and even Ancient Icarus got a story, tying into 2021's "Destruct" prompt and how/why the siblings' souls have been connected through time and reincarnations.
A few of these are alternate takes on scenes I've touched on before, but it's interesting what a new prompt at a different time can get one to say, how we change as writers in what we focus on and how we say it.
This comes in roughly 300 words shorter than last year, at 18,493. The week of the 18-22 I had off work for my birthday, and that had the most 1k+ prompts, with a word count nearly double the other 3 full weeks. While the longer prompts are good, I'm really happy with how so many of the short ones turned out!
I was again trying to be realistic about my time, energy, not pushing free write days...and also working on an original writing project on the side, so I actually did do more writing over the month, just not FFXIV related!
(Also why some of my responses were in just under the wire...)
But this was a good break and exercise from that other writing, and let me try a few new things.
And comparing to earlier years--especially 2017 and 2018 when I was getting back onto the writing horse and feeling out my OCs--I feel like my growth as a writer, especially to be more succinct yet still evocative when needed, is evident. I've gotten a lot of practice in over time, and this challenge is one of the things that helped me get to where I can write an original story on top of my fanfic!
Breakdowns for funsies:
Longest: 21 Grave; 1,652 words
Shortest: 14 Clear; 106 words
Between 100-500 words: 1 Envoy; 2 Bark; 4 Off the Hook; 5 Barbarous; 7 Noisome; 8 Shed; 14 Clear; 15 Portentous; 26 Last; 27 Sole.
Between 500-1000 words: 6 Ring; 11 Once Bitten, Twice Shy; 13 Check; 16 Jerk; 18 Fish Out of Water; 22 Fulsome; 23 Suit; 25 Call it a Day; 28 Blunt; 29 Contravention; 30 Amity.
1000+ words: 9 Fair; 12 Dowdy; 19 Weal; 20 Hamper; 21 Grave.
I didn't look at the totals until the end; I only checked some of the shorter ones during the challenge to see if they hit my personal "500+ words" cut off for adding a Read More to the posts.
"Grave" honestly could have been a lot shorter; I started the plot too early, and much as I like Zaine making one last visit to his childhood Nana, for the purposes of the challenge, I could have just focused on going to the lichyard to save myself time and energy, and wrote about the visit on my own another time. On the other hand, it's done now!
Not sure which is a favorite; there's a lot I like.
As usual, these will be revised at...some point (some more than others, probably) and added to Ao3, in my various series and threads.

i've had this sneaking feeling that the leadership at square-enix has been gradually creeping back to the mindset they had in the late 00's- that is to say, an outrageous level of confidence that the products they put out will sell on the strength of the brand alone, and a certain degree of arrogance around creative failures
The First Soldier was one such failure. it was square-enix's attempt to enter the Battle Royale market, a venture that would have been considered ill-conceived as far back as 2018, when the market for that genre was merely in a state of hypersaturation. by 2021, the market broadly belonged to Fortnite, with Apex Legends trailing at a very distant second. a number of also-rans continued to limp along, but the writing was on the wall, and it was clear to most developers that the Battle Royale formula was not the instant cash printer that it seemed to be at face value
most developers except square-enix!!! bolstered by the success of the FFVII Remake and financially buoyed by FFXIV's continuing revenue flow, The First Soldier was rushed out, seemingly in confidence that it would succeed based wholly on its connection to Final Fantasy VII
obviously, this didn't happen. The First Soldier launched in November of 2021 to lukewarm reception- the game's incessant gacha elements and aggressive pricing structure were a turn-off, as was the fact that the game was a smartphone exclusive (third-person shooters, famously, do not play well on smartphones). the announcement that it was closing down operations came in August 2022. it didn't even last a full calendar year.
you would think that a failure of this magnitude would encourage square-enix to bury all traces that The First Soldier ever happened and focus on known successes... but you'd be wrong, because these characters and plot points from The First Soldier have made their way into Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis
the sheer arrogance of attempting to wring some errant droplets of profit out of characters from a game as commercially and critically panned as The First Soldier... it both shocks me, and comes as no surprise at all

Set around 5.55, Surkukteni and Estinien have a routine on how to destress and how to decide how the night goes. Some bout of strength or a competition because they're still rivals to their core. But for some reason, Estinien keeps winning and he knows something is up. This is basically just an excuse to pick apart Surkukteni's vie for power and where that's taken her, especially about how isolated she feels the further she gets into MSQ.

tw: mentions of a cult and human sacrifice
[UPDATED 4-14-2024]
Suki Mihata
Warrior of Light and Eorzea's Favorite Errand Girl
Nameday: 21st Sun of the 2nd Umbral Moon
Age: 24
Height: 5'2" or 158cm
Hometown: Kugane
Job: Ninja (Aby mains WHM//BRD//DNC)
Pronouns: She/Her
Orientation: Ace/Aro
Atsutsune Mihata
...her twin brother
Nameday: 21st Sun of the 2nd Umbral Moon
Age: 24
Height: 6'10" or 208cm
Hometown: Kugane
Job: Samurai
Pronouns: He/Him
Orientation: Bisexual
Relationship Status: infuriating slow burn with G'raha Tia
Backstory
Suki and Atsutsune were born in Kugane, but spent much of their childhood in Yanxia. Their parents wished to raise the twins humbly, as the Mihatas are an old, wealthy family with a lot of influence in Kugane. They're also part of a cult that sacrifices young women to keep their centuries-old cult leader immortal <3 (more about that coming in another post) When they became teenagers, the twins were brought back to Kugane to complete their upbringing: Atsutsune as a samurai and Suki as, uh...
When things inevitably got dicey, Atsutsune helped Suki escape Kugane and sent her on a ship to Limsa Lominsa, where she takes up with the Rogues' Guild. The rest, as they say, is history...
Personalities
Suki is a cool and calm woman of few words, which tends to be mistaken for sullenness and apathy. (Her unnerving lizard stare doesn't help.) She is deeply loyal to her loved ones and has a steadfast sense of justice. It's difficult to truly anger her, but annoying her is a surefire way to set her off. She also has an unexpected tendency for mischief, and loves being involved in plots ranging from messing with people to full-on sabotage.
Atsutsune is a gentle, shy soul who prefers the company of animals over most human beings (notable exceptions being his sister and the Scions). He's glad to be his sister's sidekick, preferring to help from the sidelines and take orders. Make no mistake, however, Atsutsune is a seasoned warrior and would take any measure to help and protect his twin.
Notable Relationships
Suki and Atsutsune: In stark contrast to Suki's beloved Leveilleur twins, Suki and Atsutsune are perfectly in sync at all times. Atsutsune can often predict what Suki will do next with perfect accuracy or what will set her off, and vice versa. Oftentimes, it feels like they are two halves of a whole person. Atsutsune tends to be the emotional center of the two: while Suki is often the "calm" one, she has difficulty processing her emotions, and Atsutsune is one of only two people in the world who can break down her walls and get her to talk about what she's going through.
Suki and Jacke Swallow: As her Rogue mentor, Jacke was Suki's first friend upon arriving in Eorzea and remains one of Suki's closest allies. The two are thick as thieves, keeping in constant contact and each calling upon the other for various romps and general mischief.
Suki and Haurchefant: Probably the closest thing to a romantic relationship Suki has ever been in. She trusted him completely, and was deeply grateful for his patience as she figured out her identity and orientation. Haurchefant was just as glad to be Suki's friend as he was to be her partner, and his death left a hole in her heart that may never fully heal.
Suki and Aymeric: Aymeric is the other person who can break down Suki's walls and get her to be vulnerable. She leaned on him a lot in the aftermath of Haurchefant's death, and House Borel is the closest thing Suki has to a home base. Although her feelings for him are completely platonic, if she ever did get married to anyone, it would be Aymeric.
Atsutsune and G'raha: Atsutsune and Suki didn't reunite until Stormblood, so Atsutsune never met G'raha during his Crystal Tower days. He met the Crystal Exarch when he was taken to the First during G'raha's WoL russian roulette, and landed shortly after the twins arrived. He spent the intervening year getting really into Amaro breeding in the Crystarium and finding excuses to learn more about the mysterious Exarch. Since Atsutsune is usually glued to his sister's side, he and G'raha spent a lot of time together during Shadowbringers and Endwalker, but neither of them have been brave enough to make a move—much to Suki's chagrin.
Other OCs
Apollo
Race: Viera (Rava)
Age: 200+ years (Nearing 300, though he has long since lost count.)
Height: 6'4" (193 cm)
Job: Bard
Occupation: Retainer, trader, adventurer/traveler
Pronouns: He/him
Orientation: Bisexual
Relationship Status: @caerbannogs's Valoren's soulmate
Suki's retainer
Sketchy drug dealer vibes: Apollo is very good at acquiring things, and it's probably best not to ask him where or how he gets them...
Super cheerful and youthful, and purposely hides his age to fuck with people
Eternal wanderer who never stays in one place for too long
I mainly rp as Apollo, here's his carrd!
Sage
Race: Viera (Veena)
Age: 19
Job: Rogue
Occupation: Thief, transient
Pronouns: He/Him
Orientation: Demiromantic/Demisexual
Relationship status: Single
Fresh-off-the-boat vibes due to having left the Wood relatively recently
He's currently traveling all over the world in search of his mentor, and pickpockets to get by
Not necessarily naive but also incredibly eager
Has a passable understanding of the common language, but communicates best in his mother tongue (Vieran)
WILL latch on to any Viera who will tolerate him
He's an adult with an adult understanding of things, he just doesn't understand Eorzean social customs, which sometimes makes things awkward
Accidental necromancer: he can raise living beings from the dead, but he revives them in the condition that they died in (no matter how mangled or fucked up) and he cannot control this power
Also can't die: he just wakes back up after a couple of days, usually having lost his memory of the events leading up to his death
J'rhafi
Notable Sharlayan egghead and Archon
As a leading expert on birds and birdlike fauna, J'rhafi was tapped for preparing the Forum's Final Days contingency plan
Erenville's boyfriend <3
The hornbill Erenville asked Suki to catch when the two first met was actually requested by J'rhafi
Quite high strung and anxious, although that's not exactly rare among Sharlayan scholars

Don't ring him.
Vahri'a rolls the linkpearl between his fingers for the umpteenth time that day. The sunset filtering through the tent flaps hits it for a moment — and then fades to nothing once more, hidden under the crook of his thumb. There is a resounding mantra in his head.
Don't ring him.
One has to be strategic when it comes to machinations of the heart. Most would compare such sentiments to a dance, where two people move in efforts to compliment one another, flawlessly adjust to each other's pace.
No, Vahri'a considers his love an art of war. To read his opponent's moves, to pre-empt and to adapt, to avoid being the first one to fall at all costs. He is a benevolent, reasonable general — the moment the other surrenders, he will do so in turn. Until then, love is a tug of war where the rope is constantly taut if not threatening to fray.
As the man's gift of a linkpearl was just that — a gift — it was also a bold move. Like moving his Queen across the board. What is a little gesture to most means the world in his friend's furtive language. Contained in this linkpearl are the hands of an ever-ticking chronometer and the key to his house.
Don't ring him.
Metaphorically, of course. Gods, he shouldn't get ahead of himself.
For this linkpearl is a delicate thing. The potential it holds is encased in a shell of glass. For every sentiment he can deliver in it — every little indication of his persistent care — he overreaches and opens his flank to attack with all of its vulnerabilities. His penchant for control, his obsessive reminders, his need for companionship as a crutch lest he keels over without it. His friend, with his sharp, piercing gaze, would see it from a malm away. If he left that weak spot for the taking, who's saying what his opponent would do?
Perhaps surrender in the best interest of everlasting peace between their two nations?
Don't ring him.
Ignoring this linkpearl would be a grave mistake, too. For he wouldn't want to seem uninterested, as if that line of aetherial communication between them is entangled with dozens of other paramours. To spurn the offer of something so personal would snuff out the light whatever the man was trying to tell him, if not take away the kindling entirely.
If there is anything behind that gesture, that is. It wouldn't be the first time he followed his speculation into a world beyond.
Vahri'a collapses backward into his bedroll, staring upwards at the warm-toned cloth of the tent canopy, billowing in the breeze. Though he attempts to push the focus of his gaze past the linkpearl, it always drags itself back, kicking and screaming.
Don't ring him.
But Menphina above does he want to ring him. For all of his worldly worries, there is something larger than this mock battle that looms over the both of them. What if he's in danger? Their star is a tumultuous one on the cusp of collapse, every sun a little bit dimmer. How much would he curse himself if he had the opportunity to save him from something terrible and didn't — all because he was playing a game of cat and mouse with himself?
Much more than he repeats this incessant mantra. That's for certain.
Don't ring him.
Vahri'a sits up, taking one last look at the linkpearl. White is a rare hue to choose. Everyone knows it'll be a dull, splotched brass if you manage to get enough dirt on it, if not a salmon pink should blood be your close colleague instead. But it suits someone like his friend — always willing to get his hands dirty, but hold himself as if his robes are spotless.
His friend whose expression is cast in porcelain and speaks little. Yet Vahri'a can see the warmth of a hearth glowing from within that typically opaque material, and he can sense words blossoming from each of his silent gestures. His friend who manages to stand tall and proud despite the burdens he puts on his shoulders. His friend who reminds him of himself, but a version he doesn't hate. Rather, a version that feels familiar like home, that doesn't feel framed in the red curtains of a stage but rather basks in an inexplicable familiarity. His friend that he wants to be himself around.
Don't ring him.
Vahri'a slips the linkpearl into his pocket.
The mantra goes silent.
And as Vahri'a's fingers deftly reach for the linkpearl, discarded for not a second, it realizes its mistake. The fences around Vahri'a are frigid and cold, encased in the oft-forgotten aspect of the Lover's all-encompassing ice. But the house that's built within it is merely made of snow. It's a friable thing, melting to the touch of anything warm, unable to resist the beckoning licks of flame. Inevitably, the linkpearl feels snug returned to the corner of his ear. With it in, he can't hear that mantra at all.
"Akhira'a? Hey, it's Vahri'a. Sorry to ring. I just felt like I should.”

FFXIV Write: A Poll
With FFXIV Write fast approaching, I am trying to decide which characters I intend to include in my writing attempts for this year.
Last year I had planned to include Mercer, Sebastian, Teo, and Kishar, but... I mostly wrote for Sebastian. This has been an ongoing theme since Sebastian was, basically, born in FXXIV Write 2021.
But, I kind of want to get a feel for which characters people would like to get to know better or see more of. I feel like that might help me get a grasp on who and what I want to explore this year.
So... a poll. My very first one. lol.

FFXIV Write 2023: Master Post & Round Up!
Seven years of FFXIV Write in the bag! Whether this is your first year or your seventh, whether you wrote seven words or seven thousand, GOOD JOB, EVERYONE! And a thank you, as always, to @sea-wolf-coast-to-coast for continuing to host and provide prompts for us year after year.
As with last year, I will not be checking my word count or any other sort of stats; I ended up focusing on that in past years to my detriment, and the point of this challenge is to have fun! It's enough for me that I wrote every day. :D
BUT! October is here--and that it means it's time for my own personal challenge: FFXIV Edit! The heart of FFXIV Write is just to write, regardless of mistakes or roughness, but I do like to go back and revisit my ideas and see if my brain wants to put some more polish on my entries. So, throughout October, I will continue my tradition of posting each of my prompts to AO3 once a day and take the time to give them an edit or expansion or rewrite as I see fit.
Happy FFXIV Write, everyone! And now: THE MASTER POST!

ffxivwrite collections
i am probably not going to take a very active part in ffxivwrite this year for a lot of personal reasons (i'm not going to stop writing ffxiv fic, i've just been busy and dealing with ongoing health problems this year) so instead i am linking my older works here for anyone who wishes to read them!
a lot of things in my writing and my longfic plans have changed from when i wrote some of these, but ffxivwrite has always made for very good writing exercises and has even helped me solidify backstory for my WoL, so i've left them up to that end.
collection 1, sept 2019: tales of radiance
collection 2, sept 2020: above the tide of hours
collection 3, sept 2021: the cold heavens (still in progress as this was written while i was actively in the middle of moving out of texas ;; but tbh this collection has some of my personal favorites so i'm very fond of it still!)
collection 4, sept 2022: my tale again for me shall sing (largely wol-centric backstory)
