I've been watching a lot of impractical jokers on tru tv recently, and their new show Tacoma FD has been interrupting the 12 hours of just IJ, so i gave in and watched an episode. It's so unfunny. Unless you think popsicle stick humor is peak comedy, I don't recomend.

Are the Chain scared of the Fierce Deity Mask? Are they scared of the transformation? Worried about what it’s doing to Time’s body? Worried he might not be able to turn back one day? who knows the most about it? Warriors I presume probably knows the most having seen Mask using it during the War of Ages.

The nuances depend on who knows what. How much had Warriors seen during the war? Had he only known FD as this mysterious warrior that showed up to save him and then disappeared or did he actually witness young Time's transformation/detransformation?

Warriors has experience in possession and dark magic, even if he doesn't quite understand the FD's deal since young Time would be pretty clamped up about Termina (probably wasn't too long ago for him). But, just seeing the tattoos on the old man's face now would be enough for the ever sharp Captain put two and two together: every transformation has a cost, the longer he leaves it on the longer it leaves its mark, what happens when the markings complete themselves...when will that be...? After this one? The next one?

Just seeing Warriors' reaction to Time putting on the mask: crying out desperately to just wait, that they can make it out of this without it...he's afraid, more afraid than any of them have seen him. This man, usually so calm and level headed even when the tide of battle shifts way out of their favour, losing his mind over a funny mask that looks kinda like Time.

It worries and frightens them all, Twilight slightly differently. He knows Time's fate, he knows he dies with regrets, grudges, a reason to still wander the world until lain to rest. Is this what killed him? Either directly or by driving him to madness? Is the scar over his eye related to a prior transformation?

There are also the AUs. @breannasfluff has a fantastic series called Eldritch Wild, and his interactions with FD are so alien to the rest of the chain and so much fun to read.

TL;DR FD is terrifying, unknowable, uncontrollable.

Until recently the only DW programs I’d ever watched was their Olympic performances, as well as 08 and 09 worlds. Then I found a full(ish) replay on YT of 2012 worlds FD- VM won obviously with Funny Face which was phenomenal, but even they said maybe wasn’t their very best. I had known VM won both the short and FD, and I knew they won by a fairly big margin. I figured DW must’ve had a fall or missed an element entirely for there to be like a.. I think 4 or 5 point gap.

Then I watched their FD..

O M F G. I had never appreciated what you and others say about their shit skating skills till this point (I’m a dancer so my ice dance judgement comes from the waist up and performance quality- skating skills I can’t quite pick apart as thoroughly).

It was sooo fucking frantic. They did not stop for one second. THE RUNNING TO GAIN SPEEED 😵‍💫. Her arms swinging all over the place. It is genuinely a miracle they didn’t trip over. Her leg lines were god awful! Constantly bent and toes not pointed. He skates like he just snorted 5 rails before getting on the ice. I was actually dumbfounded.

On what fucking level could they have been considered in the same realm as vm (fairly)???? I for one adore Funny Face and think they performed it to near perfection. Not my fave free dance but even if you knew nothing about ice dance and watched the two teams you’d see VM’s ease in holds, calmness, control over their edges, their rock solid lifts. Tessa’s ballerina arms. They perform to the back row of the arena, they are believable and genuine. It’s LIGHT YEARS difference. I really was left quite speechless.

Then hilariously, in the kc DW score was like 4 points below their SB, with no obvious mistakes, and meryl says ‘that’s abit low’.. I’m thinking omg babe how much more could you possibly want for that burning trash heap of a skate??? (The cynic in me says that was the moment Marina set out burning VM’s career to the ground for her future daughter in law 🫠)

So ok that was an easy win for vm. But then how could there have been such a shift the other way in less than a season?? Like actual legitimate shift in skill in talent?? (there wasn’t, and the impending shit show through to 2014 (and beyond) on the judging side was proof of that) DW’s heads (and scores) were clearly being inflated through their asses enough by marina for them to start so easily winning without actually improving.

If vm make big mistakes that cost points fine. But they were rock fucking solid performing the most difficult programs ever attempted in the sport, only minor booboos (4CC excluded). Ok seasons was not the most stand out program but the performers and dancers and skaters they are could make even the most mundane Bock program an Oscar worthy performance. Charlie’s flailing fruit bat/butterfly at the end of sherizarde (I know what it is I just cbf spelling it right) is burned in my fucking brain and yeah ok Scott’s heavy breathing at the end of seasons wasn’t great and idk where I’m going with this at this point but even looking 12 years back this sport manages to shit me off.

Personally, I wish it had been a Virtue/Moir and Pechelat/Bourzat rivalry, that would have been far more interesting, not to mention, made infinitely more sense. Le sigh.

i like this Bratti/Somerville Prince RD better than either of their programs last season. it's still the Ian show sometimes, he performs like it's a solo spotlight, but it feels like they got feedback that they have to work on their connection, and oof coming off the ice and in the k&c, he's trying, but it looks so alien lol she looks uncomfy and he looks like he's copying things he's seen other people do which don't come naturally, like hugging his partner😅 mark hanretty said they made a "unique choice of edge" for the 1st set of twizzles (outside edge - i guess with the leg extended, balance is difficult), and ben agosto called these "the hardest twizzles in ice dance right now"

how did Pate/Bye ever beat a pretty clean Lopareva/Brissaud at Autumn Classic. i had to look up lift levels to understand how a RoLi that doesn't change positions can be level 4

i want to like Kazakova/Revia's RD because i like them, but 3 of the 4 songs have the exact same mid-tempo - the energy never varies, so i find myself getting bored. they use a fast song only for the last 10 seconds whyyy there's no arc to this program

omg. LaLa - amazing. the detail, the sharpness of their dancing, the speed, the musicality - how far they've come in such a short time with this program. idk why he's taken to wearing darker foundation or bronzer for their RDs since last season, but he was splotchy like he'd swiped at his face since the warm up 😅 can't wait to see their FD coming in as the leaders😭

Gr/Pa skating after LaLa highlighted that they're less sharp. there's nothing that really stands out in this program. it's good but not really memorable

Piper and Paul on the other hand - i kind of love the first half of this. it has its own vocabulary of movement that's different and makes sense - i still don't get why her closet and his closet are on different planets, but the dance itself is great- the funny little vertical hops, the roll, there's something exuberant and playful about it. the second half is a little more conventional until the RoLi. i really like their programs this season, i would not have guessed this would happen

We also gotta consider the courts can be heavily biased in favor of abusive men and rapists as well, and neglectful and sexist police officers can often revictimize survivors through victim blaming and neglect (my friend had her case dismissed because the boy was related to the cop) and we both know of several rapists who got off with a slap on the wrist (Brock turner). Obviously the long term solution should be fixing the justice system so this doesn't happen but (pt 1/2)

Ok but by your own logic, by encouraging women to retaliate and kill their abuser, it's putting women in a position of vulnerability by shoving them into the grip of the "sexist" justice system. I don't have the solution to fix the justice system, but pushing women to do things that would make them having to defend themselves against it is not reasonable. If anything, women should do everything they can to NEVER have to face the justice system altogether.

That being said, the justice system is flawed but it doesn't mean it protects only male predator. Yes scrotes are annoying to pretend caring about sex abuse only when males are victims, but there are several cases of women abusers who got away with what they did. So feminists asking like women the only victims of the screwed justice system is dishonest. The justice system has a problem with handling sexual abuse seriously, regardless of the gender.

That's why it is so important to go to the root of the problem. Educating women to nope out of toxic relationships, defend female spaces providing the help to those who escaped, help their making wiser dating choices, etc... That's why I'll never understand radfem hating on Female Dating Strategy when this platform is just providing one type of solution available for women (those who still want to date and not live a life of celibacy ). Regardless what terminally online separatists say, both separatism AND FDS can coexist to provide different solutions to different type of women who all seek to navigate through life and get the best out a system unfavorable to them.

And I don't understand why you're feeling like outweighing the pain of families of someone victim of abuse, to the one of the person who committed the abuse. The justice system is supposed to pull out sentences on the INDIVIDUAL level. (unless they are proved guilty of being actively complicit in the crime/having the capacity of preventing the crime from happening) Criminals families don't owe anything to anyone, and they shouldn't have to bear an additional weight beside the shame of having a criminal as their member.

It's funny you're talking about victim blaming about abused women....but have no issue victim blaming criminals families (implying they are deserving of more pain than the abused person family....) 🤔 Criminals DO compartmentalize and might come off as totally normal person to family members, coworkers, friends.... This myth of abusers being straight in the face menace to society is very harmful & counterproductive imo

Thursday Thoughts

I figured I'd start doing a write up of my thoughts about Dynamite after having some time to reflect. These might not be in order of anything, but just some takeaways I have. The first thing that sticks out is that I appreciate that they had Ortiz cut his own hair off instead of Jericho. The optics of Jericho doing it feelt icky and giving the control to Ortiz felt like a better way to end that segment. The Wardlow match was a ton of fun! It was stupid and the video package was funny. Probably one of the best video packages I've seen. They also made Wardlow look like a monster, which is great. I thought the segment after was also really well done. It shows that Wardlow is just a good midwestern boy who is trying to do what is right. Dax looked amazing as always. I do have a gripe about the apron spot being wonky, but shit happens. They seem to be setting something up with the Oscutter because he's tried that multiple times and hasn't succeeded. I do think FTR is winning at FD and it was really cool to see OC back. Jericho teaming with Suzuki-gun makes sense and sets up a few things down the line. It sets up Suzuki to betray him and that'll be great. it also sets up ZSJ and Bryan Danielson (if he's healthy). It was also hilarious to hear Tana tell Jericho to shut up. Plus, who doesn't love Despy? If you hate him, I want to know who hurt you. RIP Ethan Page. He's not dead but he wishes he was after facing Miro. That match was what it needed to be. Toni versus Britt was fine, but it feels like Britt's in-ring talent development is starting to plateau. It's clear who is working with Bryan and Regal (Red Velvet and Jade come to mind) and it's clear that Britt is not taking advantage of that. Toni is a good worker and did a bit of a carry there. I will say though, I'm kind of sick of the division revolving around Britt. It just needs to stop. It puts TR in the shadows and makes her look like chump change. Other people have said plenty about the women's division, but I think one of the biggest changes you can make is to take Britt off TV for a bit. Adam Cole learning that Jay White isn't a friend was probably a highlight of the night. Though we were gifted with the most relatable line from Hangman. As for him facing Okada, I don't know what is going on, but it might be dependant on the baby arriving. That is my only explanation for why we don't have this settled yet. That being said, Jay is going to want a Top Name and the only one I can think of that makes sense is Kenny. Which is a whole different post about why it's fucking stupid for him to come back and wrestle right away. The main event was great, but I am getting a bit over ladders being involved in stuff. Not that the matches aren't great but ladders make me nervous because they can just do whatever they damn well please. There is a reason Mox won't fuck with ladders but fucks with light tubes and skewers. Those are more predictable. Christian doing a hell turn was overdue and the payoff was great. I'd like to see what they're going to do with him going forward. Overall I felt the show was paced weirdly. I think a few segments could have been shorter or the storyline booking could have been started earlier. I do think FD should have been in July so there was more time between DoN and FD to build stories. Right now everything feels very manic and not in a good way. Might do these weekly if people like them.

Maybe Ryo meant that now he's no longer a JA idol, so he's not hunted down as much by tabloids... he's living a more peaceful life now. It's not really the question of the house being expensive and he needs us to help him pay rent 🤭 I truly believe Ryo can easily find a way to make a living even tho he's no longer an entertainer. I also think that Ryo had (still has) a lot of hard times that he still can't tell people about easily. And he was in two popular groups for ~8 years back then, making it doubly stressful. Ryo, thank you for being alive and healthy and still in front of us until now... I LOVE YOU!

Ice Cream... I think this is the first time they gave us #IGLIVE for the whole song. It's amazing when you can listen to what used to be group songs (Tokyoholic & Traffic) and unit songs (Banana Juice & Ice Cream) being performed by only Ryo and not feel like the solo songs lose in entertainment value at all. In fact, for me as a Ryo-biased fan back in JA-era, they're even more precious coz now the whole songs are in Ryo’s voice 💕

Day 8: Lift

I LOVE this original curve lift from Funny Face!

It’s so different to other lifts they had done and would do. In fact I don’t think I have ever seen another lift like it from anyone. It’s hyjinx-y without being to much of a ‘trick’, it’s spectacular but it’s not like its this whole separate thing from the rest of the program that takes you out of it or takes heaps of time to prepare for (eg CL 🇮🇹 lifts often feel like this- tricks for the sake of tricks that aren’t really that specky when it takes you out of the flow of the program). I can’t believe he does that curve on one foot! It’s insane! I love how after T has rolled down around his neck to hang upside down (with NO HANDS from him!) that kinda ‘catch’ into that cradle position to then whip her around into that beautiful grande rond de jambe (*chefs 💋). It fits so well with the style of the dance and the story it’s based off- that fun dance style like when she’s in all black (from the movie with the crazy legs)- it’s in keeping with the fun and playful ness of that but given she’s in a dress they also find attractive positions out of it. I’m not a huge fan of lifts that have too much going on- too many changes of positions in a short amount of time but I think with this because, as with all their lifts, it’s so musical and on the grande rond it hits the accent in the music, as well they keep their speed going into and out of it. I love the level changes in it, the upside down position is precious how they look at each other and T’s feet stay so beautifully pointed 💋💋. I love it I think it’s a stand out lift of theirs- they ONLY used it in this program (to the best of my knowledge) and they didn’t even keep it for the whole season (I liked the second version as well but this is by far my fave). I wish it got more credit bc it’s so cool.

Funny Face *-*

throw the whole thing in the trash / dislike it / neutral / like it / love it / I have decided to stan forever

So the Funny Face FD is an interesting one for me. The bottom line is that I never managed to connect with it as much as I do with TS other programs. But still, whenever I watch it (which truth be told isn’t often) I admire pretty much everything about it. 

First, it would be necessary to acknowledge to the versatility that TS showed leading up to this program, even just between Great Gig, Mahler and Hip Hip that they did in the years prior to Funny Face - it’s fair to say that during every single year of their careers TS did something completely different for their FD, and Funny Face is just another example for it. Not many teams can reenact an iconic due from a movie (and we see it often lately because of La La Land) but TS managed that to perfection, they had everything, from the costumes, to the movement, to the facial expressions and they really brought it to life during the FD.

And then there’s the skating. Funny Face has some of my favorite lifts that TS ever did, they were all very complex and daring (that one when Scott is on one leg and Tessa is balancing on her own against his neck? INSANE!).

And of course, we have the step sequences, which were as always so complex and so in character while being executed with wonderful edge work and flow.

And even in a program that was mostly fun and light, they still managed to find the right moments to connect with each other (it’s their trademark for a reason).

This program might not win any popularity contest, but there’s no doubt it was still very very good.

skate america thoughts- was so glad i got to see smaller competitions first before this one to appreciate more about this one- this audience was warm and SO supportive of everyone it visibly gave some skaters extra energy- I don’t know if it came across on the stream just how loud it got for Ilia or Kaori, but they were behind pretty much everyone

there were people who had stuffed animals for every single skater, and some of the less known skaters were very cute about receiving them, the crowd clapped for the falls almost as much as for the clean jumps, they gave the Ukrainian dance team an especially warm reception both skates, Donovan Carrillo’s mom was sitting nearby with friends cheering Vamos, Donovan (he also made a mistake right in front of her and she said ay, dios mio loud enough for him to hear😅)

Deanna Stellato-Dudek in pairs❤️ Junhwan, Roman, the whole last group of women, but especially Amber and Kaori, getting to see KanaDai and CB live but omg HB😭

Ilia’s jumping is 😳 - the sheer height he gets and how long the axel stays in the air - could see on his face the roar of the crowd was a new thing and he liked it, how could he not- but the quad god hat he put on in the kiss and cry - i hope he has good adults in his life who'll help him stay grounded and not take on the weird pressures and noise from around him. Saw him in the arena on SP day after the practice, and he looked very tight compared to Lake Placid (the skaters warmed up in and hung around the concourse above the spectator seats so he was around a lot)

I always like seeing the coaches and watching their vibes with their skaters- Marina, Aljona (who came to the men’s free event and FD and women’s FP practices after pairs was done), Orser, Patch. Robin Szolkowy. Why does Mike Slipchuk hang around the boards and even follow the skaters to the k&c? No other fed does this that I’ve noticed. When Wesley Chiu had a good FP Slipchuk went over and gave his coach a handshake and nodded to him like job well done which made me wonder what happens if a skater doesn’t skate well. Maybe it just feels like he’s everywhere bc he’s been at all the competitions I’ve been to this season. It’s funny how many pictures I have where he’s in the background on his phone

Was happy to see skaters who were new to me- this whole crop of Japanese men I didn’t know who are very good and promising. Daniel Grassl and his bendy legs- like how with those spin positions- Amber and Gracie chatting animatedly coming off the ice in practice, such good energy from Katia Kurakova giving autographs to tiny kids🥺 Marie-Jade Lauriault crying from happiness in the k&c, Amber crying in the k&c❤️

If Sam were suddenly transported in Teen Wolf how do you think that’d go?

i think that would be so funny first and foremost! i’m p sure stiles has read comics? it’s hinted at once i think? and while there’s a general knowledge of the flash, the rouges gallery for him is usually only known by fans, so recognizing sam is probably only gonna be done by stiles … at first.

so, sam, transported to another dimension where meta humans don’t exist, and all her friends/associates are fictional characters? she’s gonna go the only thing she can, blend in. miss grifter is going back to high school.

she’s not gonna change her name, so when stiles here’s it, he definitely decides to stalk her for a bit (Scott: you’re chasing around a girl bc she has the same name as a character you like? I’m a werewolf and I think that’s insane) and then he catches her using her powers … immediately starts theorizing. Scott: she is not a comic book character. Sam, when confronted: i am a comic book character.

Then on, it’s sam helping and the rest of the pack trying to help sam get home (sam reading the comics: it didn’t go down like this). i’m picturing around s2 era, but i’d be fun if sam stuck around till kira showed up! doppelgängers! (even more fun mystery with what kira is!). actually, i think kira would be the key to sam getting home! bc kitsunes are mischievous in folklore, i’d imagine maybe it was one from the comics that transported sam, and one could send her home! (did we ever find out what type kiras mom was?)
