Finally watched the (fantastic!) episode where we get to see Pilot's weird little bottom half. Naturally I had to take screenshots, for posterity. And because of course I did.

Look, Crichton's the only one not affected by T'raltixx because he's deficient. Who you calling deficient? You. You've got the worst eyes out of all of us. That's why your optic nerves aren't being affected.

Watching the season 3 eps of Farscape where John was twinned, and seeing how differently he is when he has Aeryn and when he doesn’t. The John on Talyn showed Aeryn his star charts, told her he always names one particular star after her because it’s his guide and his one constant. That John wasn’t overly obsessive about wormholes and wasn’t tortured by Harvey I don’t think.
The other John on Moya, the one without Aeryn, was obsessed with wormholes and getting home, always had Harvey in the back of his mind, was a bit more insane every Moya episode, and there was even an episode where Pilot made everyone take a vacation and get off the ship for a few days bc their bickering (John D’Argo, Jool, and Chiana) was driving Pilot and Moya nuts. Like, I think even though John and D’Argo are good friends, being with each other 24/7 (when John would normally be spending more time with Aeryn) showed them how much they could actually get on each other’s nerves.
It just goes to show how Aeryn grounds him. The reason why he puts her star at the center of his charts. When he’s with her he still wants to get home (and take her with him), but it’s not an obsession. The only thing they care about amongst all the other crap that went on is that they are with each other.

Farscape
Been rewatching Farscape, and I forgot how horny it is and how many mind control plot points this show has 😂 (it's from the late nineties, not sure how they got away with all of it tbh) and might be where some of my interests got reinforced 🤔
Like some plot points just from Season 1/2:
Crew comes across a planet where the entire population is brainwashed to work endlessly due to the primary crop being a drug, half the crew succumb before a parasite is injected into one of them that nullifies the drug.
Bugs infest the ship and one of them injects a spine into one of the crew to take over her mind and speak to the crew.
The crew comes across a ship of a race that have built a culture around aggressively brainwashing the entire populace, they remove the crews eyes and attach neural implants to their optic nerves that flood their minds with drugs to brainwash them and make them compliant.
Whenever there's increased solar activity one of the crewmates becomes basically a useless pleasure addict because she's plant based and having photogasms over and over.
Same crewmember can (and does) use her psychic powers to randomly just give people HFO.
One of the primary antagonists has a brain scanning machine that he uses to torture information out of people, and then says fuck it and just injects a chip containing a neural clone of himself into another person that slowly takes over their mind.
One of the ships is piloted by a neural implant that the sentient ship will just stab into the back of your neck.
The crew comes across a holy woman who drains the life force of the ship to be young and fuck one of the crew nonstop.
main character gets put in a brainwashing chair and has his reality slowly spiral out of control in an effort to make him break.
As the MC's visions get more intense, the entire crew (including the muppet) show up in various BSDM outfits and latex to torture him. The muppet has a leather flail.
Oh yea, the show was done by Brian Henson, and one of the main crew members is a deposed royal that looks like a 18" tall gremlin.
Another main character is the ship's pilot that is a huge alien that is physically grafted to the ship.
As the neural chip takes over the character gives into the brainwashing and the injected tulpa takes control and does betrayal.

Does anyone actually like the whole "this total loser is the chosen one" thing?
You start playing some new game. Immediately, you are introduced to the protagonist. He's a total deadbeat loser idiot who has no greater ambition in life beyond playing games/becoming a cool rock star somehow without learning to play an instrument or form a band/watching some TV show. But through just the absolute sheer dumb luck of being in the right place at the right time, he gets The Thing, that lets him do main character in a video game stuff. Much to the frustration of this cool competent badass woman who's actively invested in saving the world and has a concrete plan to do it. Our accidental hero can't be bothered to care about any of that, and any time she's talking he either tunes out completely or sexually harasses her. Then once she eventually gives up trying to explain him he says something like "now here's the part where I do my thing!" and you jump into the action of doing 3 hit combos to enemies or whatever.
I hate that character. I can't stand him. His presence makes me not even want to touch a game, which is a real shame because I swear the paragraph above describes like... half of them. Also most shonen anime come to think, the bulk of superhero media, and a surprising amount of fantasy stuff.
Now, I understand why we have that guy. The thinking is, he's "relatable." We're making a not particularly challenging piece of escapist media, we're assuming most people who are going to be interested are losers who just sit on their couch all day, and we're also assuming they're at-least-mildly-creepy dudes even when demographic info suggests a given genre/medium appeals primarily to women.
Does anyone actually want that, though? I'm not some pathetic dude on a couch, so I probably wouldn't get the "he's just like me!" factor regardless, but like, I remember being a small child and having media constantly cram some annoying piece of garbage kid into everything for me to "relate to" and I was never able to stand any of them either.
Like if I'm watching Transformers the Movie as a kid, I am just rolling my eyes every time we have the dorky little kid going fishing or trying to use power armor, and for that matter as an adult I'm not too big on the pink girly one playing babysitter and being flirty. I'd be cool just giving all that screen time over to Kupp and Grimlock thanks.
And really, it always seems like a huge insult to whoever you're trying to give a relatable stand-in to. Some deadbeat loser who'd just be sitting on the couch watching TV if he didn't get a magic yo-yo or whatever isn't exactly an aspirational sort of character. Even if that's where you'd picture yourself at the start of the cool action narrative, if it were you, you'd want to get your act together and live up to the heroic role you fell into, right?
Like, recently I've been marathoning through Farscape for like the 5th time because a friend had never seen it, and there's a show where the protagonist is just a big fish out of water nerd in a crazy setting constantly making obscure pop culture references that absolutely nobody else is possibly going to have the context for, and I can sure as hell personally relate to that! But the key difference is, he doesn't suck. He does his best to adapt to situations and show compassion and actually learn how stuff he doesn't get works, so he's, you know, likeable. He's not some complete loser who only gets by because he has the spoon of destiny or whatever.
Actually come to think of it, I'm really combining two separate media trends I can't stand here. Loser protagonists get on my nerves even when they aren't the chosen one, and even when they aren't a total loser, I kinda hate chosen one narratives too.
Like... have you ever played a Bethesda game? They always want to do this whole bit where you come from the humblest of roots and go on to save the world or whatever, but they just cannot for the life of them wait until you've actually started accomplishing cool stuff before everyone starts in with the totally over the top hero worship. Just, "behold! This stranger to our lands has picked up the empty soda can and tossed it in the recycling bin! Truly such a feat of heroics means this is no mere mortal before us, but the great one foretold in legend!"
Like, can we please just have narratives where the protagonist is a decent person, who accomplishes things by virtue of actual competence and/or determination, and any respect or admiration they might receive is actually properly earned? Is that too much to ask? And if that IS too much to ask from a protagonist, can we at least stop treating members of the supporting cast who pick the slack up like total garbage?
And speaking of getting treated like garbage/the concept of supporting, I still don't know how I'm going to get through the winter with a roof over my head.

I'm watching Farscape for the first time I can remember (I've seen it before, but I was small). It's so weird to see Cameron Mitchell and Vala Mal Doran in some other weirdass scifi adventure.
It’s fun to imagine Vala and Aeryn getting on each others nerves. Aeryn would *loathe* Vala. But Crichton and Mitchell feel like nearly the same character to me.

Okay tumblr, I need help figuring out this aesthetic I like. It's like... living technology. Like a living spaceship, a living suit, a living weapon...
Originally I called it Biopunk, but Biopunk isn't exactly in line with this style. Biopunk is usually a term used for technology that's built into organic tissue. Steel grafted to bone, circuits intermingling with nerves, like a cyborg. But what I'm imagining is living tissue that's completely replaced the metal and circuits.
Solarpunk comes close, but that's more like technology taking care of the environment. You'd have a robot that waters a plant, but I'm talking about a robot that IS a plant.
Like I'm talkin like a living spaceship, like in Farscape, or a living gun, as seen in High on Life. Maybe even Samus's suits in Metroid Fusion and Metroid Dread. But I'm not seeing it as just a combat thing.
Imagine you wake up one day in a sort of nest. All of your cushions and pillows are made from moss, leaves, feathers and fur. But it's not dead fur. It's still alive. You look around and see that you're living in a tree, like an elf in a fantasy novel, but it's more than that. You go up to a circular door, and it opens up like the lense of a camera. You step into a transparent pod to take a shower, and water sprays from every direction. Then hot air blows from every direction to dry you off. Maybe there's a sink made of wood, or maybe it looks more like a sea shell, and there's a constant waterfall going for you to dip your hands into, because this huge sentient organism that you live in is constantly recycling water and air.
It's not just your home either. The clothing that you wear is a living thing that can change shape and color to fit whatever environment you find yourself in when you step outside. Maybe you also have a living wristguard that serves all the functions that a smartphone would.
Anyway, I've been trying to find a name for this specific aesthetic, but I haven't seen anything that really fits. I've tried Biopunk, Solarpunk, Alien Aesthetic, even elven fantasy stuff. Am I using the wrong terminology?

a moment of appreciation for u off anon. i sent an ask on anon for your ask game yesterday but i'm here just to say i think you are so cool. I love your writing, and I love learning from you - in posts you reblog, or in posts about life, things you type in the tags. I'm inspired by you and the fact that you have these amazing passions, hobbies, and creative talents, and you're a working adult and parent as well. It makes me really emotional to see women of many ages interacting in fandom spaces -- especially when socially, women are so often encouraged to leave their interests behind as time goes on. you're so fucking cool and badass and lovely and intelligent and kind. i hope you have a great day.
and I hope your uncle is alright - I have some antivax friends and while I think they're idiots for not getting vaccinated, I Iove them and don't wish any ill on them - sending healing vibes your way.
oh my goodness. i am feeling so many things right now. I'm not sure how coherent this answer is going to be.
I've spent a lot of time lurking in fandom spaces before there were fandom spaces, I used to read Farscape fanfic when all we had was geocitities. I've fallen down various fandom black holes over the years but always as a lurker, I wrote fic but always for myself. I didn't work up the nerve to interact with fandom until what? Three years ago? IDK, the whole pandemic thing has played hell on my sense of time.
what I'm saying is, I didn't get up the nerve to write fanfic and share it with the world until I was over 40.
The way fandom treats middle aged women is fucking disgusting and hypocritical. 20 years olds can say the nastiest shit imaginable about (insert middle aged celebrity here), but when an older woman *checks notes* expresses any sort of sexual interest in (insert middle aged celebrity here) oooooh. ewwww. creeper.
And its like, ok, I was not the one on tik-tok saying (insert middle aged celebrity here)'s cum would make good lipgloss. You all want to be his problematically young girlfriend.
And don't get me going about the whole subset of people who think that anyone over 25 in fandom spaces is automatically some sort of creepy groomer. How dare women over 30 write about sexual desire. HOW DARE.
Sorry this turned super ranty. It's good to know that there are people out there who welcome my presence.
You don't cease to exist once you turn 30 or 40 of 50. Once you become a parent you don't cease to be you. I wish people understood this and stopped punishing women for having interests other than fucking child-rearing.
This ask makes me feel so much hope.
thank you for the well-wishes for my uncle. I will never forgive Trump for politicizing a goddamn plague.

Well, well, well, what do we have here. Okay, just kidding. I remember the first time I saw Jeanette's writing. It was when I was still rping Spock (obviously her muse was Reg) and I really wanted to interact, but got intimidated because jfc is she a good writer! Her Clark is no exception at all. I'm repeatedly blown away about her portrayal, not just the writing, but also the characterization. She writes Clark pretty much exactly like I imagine him. And yes, she's the second person responsible for me starting to watch Superman & Lois, which I'm very grateful for.
So, to Jeanette herself, once my shyness and nerves got settled (mostly, I still worry I'm annoying at times 😅) and we began talking, she's so nice and to my surprise we've grown up with several tv series in common. Just recently I screamed about Farscape (which anyone reading this should watch if they haven't). She's also incredibly chill, no pressure to reply quickly and have never complained about my random spamming on Discord or when I ask Clark-related question (sometimes semi stupid ones). She also made my very pretty promo pic.
All in all, very glad to have found her to rp with and talk to ooc. Oh and she was the first Clark willing to interact with Yoyo, I could've cried of happiness when that happened.

So I'm doing the comfort watch of Farscape, as I said I was going to. I got to Nerve/The Hidden Memory and remembered how tragic Gilina's story was.
