ok so i decided to do this little silly project thing

inspired by @couldtheycatchkira and this poll and the general power scaling bullshit. Can your blorbo beat the sayan popstar? Probably, but it is not my place to decide. This blog is just for fun, I dont like unironic powerscalings and stuff.

8 shows to get to know me with explanations (though that’s not necessary)

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1996)

this one starts the section i’m calling “shows that raised me.”

it was that show for so many of us. the cousins i grew up with and i still have formative memories and inside jokes that only make sense of you’ve seen this show. (i don’t think i’ve even seen every episode, zbc scheduling being what it was.)

The Golden Girls (1985-1992)

this one is suffused into my being. i’m not gonna be an old ‘lady’ but this is how i will be moving through the world.

Paraffin (1990s)

some homebaked comedy. there were two, this one and Mukadota (1980s) and they just cushioned the post-independence generation and bridged the gap. everyone sat down together to watch them. the cultural relevance is immense, even if it’s likely horribly offensive nowadays.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993-1995)

i wanted to be a power ranger before i knew what acting even was. had me wanting to do both gymnastics and martial arts, in suburban zimbabwe of all places. (this is also one of the first shows i can remember having actively-bisexual feelings about. (the other one is Sunset Beach. shh, don’t worry about it.)

Are You Being Served? (1972-1985)

my first intro to camp and homosexual characters on tv! zero tragedy and he wasn’t the butt of the joke any more than anybody else was. (i don’t think anybody ever said it out loud but it was Text™️)

i was very disappointed to discover that no working environment is actually like this. i’m still obsessed with puffy sleeves and flouncy-front blouses.

Farscape (1999-2003)

now begins the “who i am now” portion of the presentation. (i grew up with an older brother who was obsessed with action, martial arts and sci-fi, so naturally, i made it an integral part of my personality.)

this one is hard to summarise. it lives in the same place that Firefly (2002) occupies in my heart but doesn’t have jomps wobbin’s ick all over it?

it hits a lot of the same beats: found family, badass female characters, running from an evil space-government/empire (there’s so many more of those in Farscape), members of said evil space-government aiding and abetting our crew.

but Farscape ran for 4 seasons and had a miniseries; came with Aliens™️; the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop doing some of them which, *gestures at Rygell and Pilot, two fully animatronic characters* and contains the love of my life (and future cosplay magnum opus), Pa’u Zotoh Zhaan, who is blue and a sentient plant. suffice it to say, it changed my life.

Leverage/Leverage: Redemption (2008-2012, 2021-)

a show about fighting capitalism, with crime! and found-family! (still waiting on our OT3. it’s been 85 years.)

this show is why i taught myself to cook (to the point i was thinking about culinary school), wanna play the cello, am a polyglot, am not afraid of ageing, still wanna do gymnastics, am gay-will crime… it’s been the catalyst in shaping so much of who i currently am. (timothy hutton not withstanding.)

(not aldis hodge being the most jacked renaissance man. there’s an episode where his character plays the violin AND IT’S ACTUALLY HIM PLAYING THE VIOLIN.)

The Crow: Stairway To Heaven (1999)

yes, the show. because i saw this looong before i saw the movie or read the graphic novel. this is likely when the seeds of my eventual goth-hood were planted. this and Sting, from wrestling. my goth boyfriend.

probably why i was obsessed with Gibsons too…

i was just endlessly haunted by miss forehead-eye over on the right there who showed up in my dreams. she’s very sweet and gentle but i forgot this show existed until i was looking up what all i watched as a kid (A. LOT. of television apparently) and this popped up at the end of a sci-fi list! never wonder why i’m so fucking weird. my childhood was almost entirely unhinged, wild-shenanigans programming like this.

I'm really bitter about riverdale in a similar way I'm bitter about gossip girl and twisted like u can't set urself up as ~not like other teen shows~ and like sort of vaguely start a condemnation of like the way adults from the upper clasa/from weird ass small towns pass their issues and trauma onto kids with very little regard and the way they handwave serious issues for the supposed good of the town and wind up traumatizing young kids or the way but then instead focus in on badly written romance drama and shallow relationships between characters

Yes anon, YES! Farscape knows what it is and what it’s doing, just as you said. It is an exploration of pain and trauma, love and loneliness, growth and change, destruction and reformation. It wears a campy science fiction suit, but under all the puppets, aliens, Living Ships and bondage gear lies a vivid, emotional and tragically human life.

ATTENTION: REPOSTER ON TWITTER/INSTAGRAM - glojo3798 / GlojoCuscuhing

Hey guys, I will take some of your time here by writing about this particular Star Trek gifs reposter that’s been brought to my attention, but first let me provide some links explaining what reposting is and why it is bad. See posts here and here. A lot of gif makers and other content creators have faced reposters since tumblr exists and I myself wrote a lot of posts about it, but those sum it up well.

Recently I was notified by @ansonmountdaily that there is a massive reposter who’s been going through tumblr stealing thousands of Star Trek gif sets over the course of at least three years, and reposting them on their Instagram and Twitter accounts glojo3798 and GlojoCuscuhing, 99.99% of the time without giving credit to the original gif makers on tumblr, which come from every Star Trek fandom (TOS, TNG, VOY, DS9, Discovery and Picard) See list by AnsonMountDaily at the bottom of the post for a sampling of gif makers that have been targeted. The purpose of this post is to let people know their work has been reposted offsite without credit. It is not meant to attack the reposter in any way.

This individual has reposted 7000+ gif sets for which they’ve received thousands of views and likes from their 4100+ Instagram and 1700+ Twitter followers. Reposts include gifs clearly watermarked with the gif makers’ names but conveniently re-cut by them to make the watermark on gifs harder to see. Glojo also has the habit of combining stolen gifs, creating a collage, changing the size and order of the gifs, putting additional text over the graphic, and sometimes even their own watermark on stolen edits (original), giving the impression they’re the creator of those works. To top it off, Glojo has turned other people’s gifs into “birthday gift” collages, tagging Star Trek actors’ Twitter/Instagram handles on the reposts, again making it seem as if the gifs were their creations.

Glojo knows where the gifs originate from because the captions on the reposts are often the same as on the tumblr posts, and on the rare occasion they do admit the gifs are not theirs, it’s done in a vague manner, in the style “credit to the owner” (“gif from tumblr”) which is not credit at all, it’s merely acknowledging the platform the gifs come from, when credit should be given to specific users.

Before AnsonMountDaily told me about the reposting I did not know about any of this and am pretty sure the gif makers on the list didn’t either. They have since been notified. Glojo was contacted via Instagram about giving credit more than once, only to block those users. I myself wrote to them (also commented) about it, but they were not even bothered to answer me, but still continued to repost my works after i wrote them.

I want to ask those who see Glojo’s reposts or already follow them on social media, to NOT like/follow reposters or give them views. Please encourage the content creator and not the thief. We know it can be difficult sometimes to recognize an account as a reposter, and that net etiquette about reposting and ”resharing” isn’t immediately clear to everyone browsing social media, which is why we’re alerting people about this particular case, and spreading the word to other graphics makers who have been affected.

If you respect content creators who provide you with fanart and gifs for your favorite fandom, if you appreciate the love and dedication and energy they put into their work, and don’t want them to lose interest in giffing (a skill that takes time to practice and learn, and a process that is longer and far more involved than non-gif makers tend to believe), do not encourage people like Glojo into stealing more because it is very upsetting. As a member of @startrekladies I had a hard time going back on posting there because a lot of Glojo’s stolen works originate from said blog or got reblogged by it. More than that, Glojo went through my old blog @spockemon and reposted 50+ edits and gifs, and even my Doctor Who gifs (original), and that’s just what I found from browsing their instagram a little, pretty sure if i scroll down to the end i could find more :/ which is very upsetting.

They reposted not only Star Trek gifs/edits, but also Doctor Who, Farscape, Stargate and Star Wars gifs.

We do hope that if they repost more they will give a credit to original creator, but as someone whose gifs and edits were reposted a lot and even re-edited and watermarked by glojo, i prefer them to not repost my works at all. Even if it is just a small screencap edit, I still put my time and effort into it and using it as a base for their work and even claiming as theirs is disrespectful.  The worst is - Glojo is not the only one who does this, there are more accounts stealing works from creators and getting praise for it, never mentioning that it is not their work. That is why my recent gifs are all watermarked. I put in my about page that if someone reposts my works outside tumblr at least give me credit, linking back to my tumblr, that is not much to ask and all the time I ask for the credit I get rude answers and get blocked. or no answer at all :/ I hope you will have better luck with it.

I was looking at some of my old posts recently and I found one from before season 5 of She-Ra came out that discussed parallels between the villains of She-Ra and Farscape, and I want to go back to it now that She-Ra is finished. I'm just going to copy the text from that post and update it where new information is available or where I have new thoughts (also, I'm going to be using terms like "heroes" and "villains" a lot in this post, even though both shows have a much more nuanced portrayal of morality, just because they make it easier to refer to the different groups of characters and different forces in the worlds)

Shadow Weaver and Crais were both introduced as powerful people but also as underlings, underlings who had a personal obsession with the hero but were ordered to stop trying to capture them. They both disobeyed orders to try to capture the hero anyway. Their reasons for being obsessed with the hero are very different, but they are similarly reckless in their obsession and pay heavily for it. A higher-up in their evil organization decides to remove them from their position and severely punish them because they are disobeying orders and their obsession with the hero has made them bad at their job, so they flee from the evil organization and go to the heroes for protection. Thus, Hordak and Scorpius become the villains, and Shadow Weaver and Crais become untrustworthy allies. Shadow Weaver and Crais eventually accompany the heroes on a dangerous mission to prevent untold deaths at the hands of a dangerous weapon, and end up sacrificing themselves to destroy a threat so that the heroes can escape. However, while Crais grows as a person and ends up earning the trust of the heroes, Shadow Weaver doesn't. Also, they both had an interest in pushing the boundaries of what their organizations were capable of, Shadow Weaver with the Black Garnet and Crais with his genetically engineered Leviathans.

Now, Hordak and Scorpius are quite different from each other, but they both have an obsession with a powerful form of transportation that can also destroy worlds. In Hordak’s case he’s obsessed with a portal out of Despondos, and in Scorpius’s case he’s obsessed with wormholes, and they will both go to any lengths to figure out how to create/control their chosen transportation device/world destroyer. Also, they are both introduced as a higher-up with seemingly unlimited power who we slowly come to realize does not actually have unlimited power, until their superiors are abruptly introduced as the final big bads in their particular organizations. Thus, Horde Prime and Grayza become the villains, and they immediately reduce the previous villains to nothing. The previous villains end up allying with the heroes against the new ones, though Scorpius remains a villain to the very end while Hordak does not. This is the opposite of the situation with Shadow Weaver and Crais, now the She-Ra villain is redeemed while the Farscape villain is not. Also, they both create clones of themselves, though they're very different types of clones, and they both end up technically getting what they wanted with their obsessions but don't actually get what they wanted, though they get their way in the end.

Horde Prime and Grayza also have some parallels. They both have some form of mind control which they use to control one of the heroes, and they both claim that the mind control isn't harmful to the hero but they're both very wrong. In general, they both proclaim themselves to be on the side of good while very clearly being on the side of bad, though Horde Prime does this more than Grayza. However, while Horde Prime is killed at the end of the series, Grayza is not, but she's not redeemed either.

In the previous post I had a little aside about how Catra and Entrapta have some parallels to Braca, but I want to talk more about that now. If you squash them into one character, they make a pretty good parallel to Braca. Catra and Braca both started off as pretty low-ranking members of their respective organizations, and are promoted pretty early on to be the direct underlings of the first villains. They gain the favor of the second villains, and when the first villains are disgraced they are promoted in their stead, and work hard to help the second villains achieve their goals. They eventually end up joining the third villains, but aren't actually loyal to them and betray them. Meanwhile, Entrapta and Braca both gain the favor of the second villains, with Entrapta ending up in a romantic relationship with Hordak and Braca ending up in a relationship with Scorpius that is commonly interpreted as romantic and probably would be explicitly romantic if the show was made today, and they both display high levels of loyalty to the second villains even when there's no apparent reason to do so. They also both have a scene where one of them is tied up by the third villain and the other is working for the third villain, and the third villain expects the one who's working for them to shoot and kill the one who's tied up, and they at first appear to do so but don't actually kill them, though with Farscape it's Scorpius who's tied up and Braca who's expected to kill him, while with She-Ra it's Entrapta who's tied up and Hordak who's expected to kill her.

Oh, if you're reading this post and you've only watched one of the shows, here's a little disclaimer that She-Ra is a kid's show that, despite being morally complex, presents a very idealized view of the world, while Farscape is very much not a kid's show and is about deeply flawed people in a deeply flawed world.

Anyway, yeah. I find these parallels very interesting, mainly the way we go from one villain to the next, each one making the one before them seem laughable, and the way the heroes and the villains end up working together. Those parallels are why I initially started thinking about the parallels between the two shows, and the rest of the parallels occurred to me later.
