Fourth of July specific Headcannons
• John makes the entire holiday his own personal runway, always has. His parties back in Atlanta were the biggest and most exclusive events in the state. He had the best food flown in, the best music, the best drinks, and the best people. Sure, now in Hope County he can't exactly fly in anyone to cook but he can cater, and yeah there's no liquor allowed but what Joe doesn't know won't hurt him, will it? Lightly spike the punch bowl. Live music is just the Eden's Gate choir now but hey, they learned new songs for this and they're quite proud. But no one, and I mean no one, can stop him from dressing up for the occasion. It'd be a sin not to, wouldn't it?
• Joseph spends the entire day reading old historical texts from the nation's inception to Jacob, hoping it helps soothe him. He pretends its just because he's concerned about Jacob but he also just really hates parties. He makes an appearance at the end to make a speech about how this country might have failed them now, but it started with a dream very similar to theirs: freedom, faith, and guns.
• Jacob hates this fucking holiday. Hates it. The fireworks sound like mortar fire to him. This country has done nothing but use and abuse him his entire life. But, his brother likes it, so he tries to. Demands to be in charge of grilling, absolutely destroys the dance floor. Knows exactly what's in the punch, steals the entire bowl for himself. Locks himself in his room before the heretics start their firework displays so he can't accidentally hurt someone during a flashback.
• Faith absolutely adores any excuse to make everyone in Eden's Gate be outside and cheerful. Everyone's so sad and pale! They need fresh air and Bliss! They need joy! They need to celebrate The Father! Like she does! The Angels set up the entire party, she's the queen of decorating. There's fun activities, corn hole, water balloon fights, sparklers. She's in charge of deserts so there's cute little cakes and candies. The priestesses brings the kids out to celebrate with them.
•On the flip side, The Rye family has hosted a Forth of July party every year as well. Chad's bbq is there, there's usually some recreation of the Teasty Festy treats, Nick flies all the little kids around in his plane to see the fireworks from the sky. Pretty much everyone who doesn't show up here is at the Spread Eagle doin half price shots or doing whatever the hell Sharky is doing. The Ryes really just love any excuse to gather everyone together for something positive, something happy. Kim's Canadian. Nick has average levels of patriotism (aka hey! Its an excuse to grill and drink)
• Charlemagne Victor Boshaw is holding his own shindig at his place. There's pizza, and beer and weed. Do many people show up? No, but its hard to compete with Chad so he isn't complaining, really. Plus it means more for him! He and Hurk spend the whole day drinking, watching movies, and then spend all night lighting their ridiculously complicated homemade firework setup with flamethrowers and watching the whole sky turn white. God bless America for not making laws about flamethrower ownership.

There's this idea that I've seen floating around for a very long time that Faith is a victim, that she's savable, fixable, a victim of circumstances, of her environment, of Joseph, that I personally think is a gross misrepresentation of her character, and she'd be so proud of herself for fooling everyone into believing it. Her charade worked, on everyone, even after her death. The charade she openly tells Rook about in a Bliss Hallucination worked.
To quote the woman herself: "All my life I dealt with people like you. People who underestimate sweet, innocent Faith. You see what you wanna see... a playful butterfly, a delicate flower... a child with childish thoughts. It's easier to disregard a child. Tracey made the same mistake as you. While you all ignored me, I walked right through every one of you."
You can't save her because she doesn't want to be saved. She is exactly where she wants to be. She is in the perfect place to manipulate everyone into doing or being exactly what she needs them to be. She tricked Eden's Gate into seeing her as a personification of religious purity. She convinced Joseph that she is not only the perfect reincarnation of his wife, but also the perfect person to take care of the most challenging and dangerous tasks and threats to the Project. The only person who ever sees Faith as Rachel, the girl behind the title, is John, who vaguely warns you about how vicious she is while you're escaping his bunker ("Here, you just have to confess. In the east...well, Faith may have created those Angels of hers, but she did treat them very well." I always saw this as him saying "You think I treat people badly? Just wait until you see what Faith does." This is interesting, considering he is also fully aware of what Jacob is doing. We all believe/know he's scared of Joseph, but I think he's also scared of Faith.)
She is the master manipulator of Eden's Gate. She is The Siren. You don't save someone who drags you to your grave with a smile on their face. You run from them. You all see her as the poor, pitiful victim she wants you to see, and she walks straight through you, just as intended.

I was going to sit down and try to come up with a way to deep dive into Jacob as a person, but really what you see with Jacob is what you get. He doesn't hide behind a title like Faith or Joseph does, or a mask like John. He is unapologetically himself, at all times. He uses his past, his trauma, like a suit of armor. He divulges to you the worst trauma of his life, willingly and without hesitation. Why? Because he doesn't let other's reactions to his grief affect him. He doesn't buy into the idea that emotions make you weak. I mean, hell, manipulating one's emotions is a key part of his weaponization process for The Father.
Everything he's doing is a bit of a rehash of exactly what he went through in the military. The more forceful integration process isn't all that different from how soldiers would be treated in the brig. He takes that anger, that rage and just redirects it. He takes the loyalty they feel to Eli, to the Militia and redirects it back at himself. Much like loyalty to your country gets redirected into loyalty to your unit in the military. You don't go around the Middle East shouting "USA! USA!" No. You're chanting "Semper Fi!" or "Hooah!" Loyalty to America redirected into loyalty to the Marine Corps, or the Army. Resistance redirected into loyalty to Eden's Gate, or more accurately, loyalty to Jacob.
The Judges, I think, are really the best window into who Jacob is. He spent month, years, turning the same animals who tormented him, chased him through the desert, into loyal tools. They can't hurt him anymore. He turned the object of his fear into an ally. Now, when the wolves are closing in, it will never be around him. He turned his fear into his strength.
And my favorite section of my little character analysis: could you save him? My guess on this is a big fat maybe. He sees protecting Joseph as his purpose, so unless you found a way to give him a new purpose, I don't think he's leaving. But I also don't think finding him a new purpose would be all that hard, it would just have to be extremely personal. He's a family oriented person, so love might turn him away from Eden's Gate, but I don't think you could ever truly turn him completely against Joseph to the point where he'd raise arms against him unless given no other option. Joseph is still his brother, after all. Though I'm not sure you could ever save him from all the legal trouble his actions will bring him if The Collapse never happens, but that's never really been part of my calculus.

Dutch's bunker layout confuses me. Out of all the rooms I'd want to be easily accessed from the outside, right by the stairs leading up to the hatch, the shower room isn't one of em. Which is really what it is, I think. It's just a shower and a sink. I don't see a toilet so I'm guessing he has that somewhere else? Or maybe the man doesn't poop. But you walk in the bunker and boom! Showers! I guess it makes sense if you're looking at from the perspective of "well after The Collapse we're all going to come in here and be filthy so we'd need to wash that off," but it's still a little weird. The little soap bottles are oddly cute, though

Starting on my Faith Cosplay project today. I'll be posting my progress mainly to keep myself focused and motivated to continue. I've got a lace dress I'm going to use as a base, but it's going to take a bit of work before I can really get started adding details to it.
Tumblr media
The dress I bought is nicotine stained, and cream colored, so my plan is to bleach it white before I start fraying it and adding in the stains on Faith's dress. The stains almost look like mold patterns to me. I'm not sure how well I can replicate that, so my backup plan is just dirt and grass staining the crap out of it.
I think the flowers are going to be the biggest challenge. I'm not great at painting, and felt flowers can get a bit pricey. I'll probably get a little bit of assistance on that part, but I'm excited for the challenge.
After the dress gets finished, I'll work on a Book of Joseph replica and try to get some photos taken and throw them up here.
If anyone has any advice or anything, please let me know!

Today's my birthday so I figured now's a decent time to just post some pictures I wanted to but had no idea how to formulate into some kind of structured post thing. So here's some funky little scenery images of random stuff I took that I'm in love with.

Faith Seed Cosplay Update
I have zero clue how to sew, and my friend who volunteered to help me learn has been a bit busy so I've been on parts collection duty. I've got some of the flowers I need, and I'm still searching for the other two lace patterns. (Flowers I've got in the first image, Reference image in the second) The bunch on the far right is more for a prop than to put on the dress, I thought it would make for a good bliss flower bouquet prop with maybe a little bit of paint.

I have a wig I bought several years ago (synthetic I got at a costume shop, I think) that I've been trying to un-mat before I dye it a more natural color so if anyone's got advice on the wig front, I'll take all the help I can get. Currently what I'm doing is spraying it with a fabric softener/water combo and then letting it hang so it kinda soaks in? I tried spraying it and then brushing it but I was just making the matts worse doing that, and doing this at least the matts aren't getting bigger. The top layer is finally back to straight, but the bottom layer is basically an afro. (Did I really give my family pictures in the background the Minecraft painting treatment? Yes, yes I did.)
