can i just say, it still makes me feel a little crazy how astarion, come act 3, still can’t quite put a name to his relationship with his partner, but he WILL tell them he wants to keep them both safe.
he won’t say i love you just yet but he will say forever, for good.

reminding myself on this busy morning that i also have dreams of taking piano lessons & singing lessons & also honing my writing skills & absorbing as many books as i used to when i was a kid & at the very least taking up cute tennis dates & dabbling into art & just becoming an artistic generalist. also reminding myself that there are pre-meds out there who managed to pursue something they’re passionate in (some are even professional athletes) & still excelled in medicine & if they can do it so can I

Thinking about Sam and how central autonomy and violation is to his character. How many times and ways he had his choice taken away throughout the series. All the things we don’t know about his time with Lucifer, but are also so heavily implied that we do.
Imagining he eventually gets out of The Life and becomes a victim’s advocate. He ultimately decides not to try and pursue law school at this stage in his life—it’s been so long and so much has changed—but finishes his bachelor’s and pursues a master’s in social work. He never expected to end up here: the boy with the demon blood, no longer living out some doomed and twisted fate, helping people. He’s passionate about representing those made most vulnerable and unsafe in their own skin, supporting others as they come out the other side survivors, lending the compassion he’s always struggled to have for himself. Every time he listens to someone else’s story, helps connect them to resources, advocates for their case, he heals a little bit too.

Funny that this post should come out of my queue now because I was just thinking about this concept; mainly, that certain mental-wellbeing concepts come off the way they do for the exact same reason that the stuff people say after a psychedelic trip does. In both cases, you're attempting to take a deep feeling of truth, a gnosis, that has fundamentally changed how you see the world and yourself, and you're trying to describe it to other people, you're trying to share it so other people can tap into that deep feeling that you had, and all that comes out is "it's all love, man! all of it!" or "you have to know that you're okay the way you are". And you hear how lame it sounds, but you keep saying it anyway, because you're hoping the true message will resonate deep in someone else's gut the way it did in yours.
Sometimes that does happen, but usually people have to fall into that deep feeling on their own, and sometimes that happens because they took a drug or because they did 5 years of therapy or whatever, and sometimes it happens completely at random. And then they try to tell someone else about it, and the cycle starts all over again, lol.

do you ever think about how din has had to cultivate a placidity so calm and cold it could dip into implacability with how little he's moved by practically anything to practically anyone who doesn't know him for so long that it's not just a second skin so much as it is something embedded, how it enhances his capacity to be hunter and hunted, how it's a point of practicality as much as personality; do you ever think about how din has a natural well of in-the-moment reactivity that he is never framed to need to bury beneath himself despite that placidity, how it enhances his capabilities as hunter and hunted as someone who can and is willing to adapt on the dime, how it too is a point of practicality as much as personality; do you ever think about how these built-innate things about him hone him so well for all the things that come with being a good bounty hunter but even more importantly, a good provider, and at first it's simply for his covert but then it's for his son
do you ever think about how that placidity translates into patience and how that reactivity translates into sensitivity, how from the outset of his care, he is gentle in a way he actively amends and decides to be and it's enough, and he is steadfast as he has forged himself to be and it's more than enough; do you ever think about how from the outset of his care, he treats grogu in a manner that isn't completely at odds with what we see of him in glimpses with others but is still obviously, blaringly different from his usual because he understands, instinctively, that this kid in his care is fragile — in a general "this is a baby" way, and a darker "this is a neglected/abused kid" way — and is on some subconscious-deeply-affecting-the-conscious level reacting to that
do you ever think about how this growth emerged and how it's cataclysmic growth not cataclysmic change, because it's not a case of mutually exclusive with din. do you ever think about how for all his other faults, grogu belonging with him more than he does with anyone else and din belonging with grogu more than he does with anyone else half-developed from some of these fundamental things about him, the ones that make him so good at providing, in all the hard and soft ways that entails. do you ever think about how some of the things that make din din, the things that make him so primed and perfect for duty, also make him so primed and perfect for love

ppl will go “i’d notice if society was going to sacrifice a marginalised group of people and if they said that it’s ok that a bunch of people would die then i would stand against it” and then they’ll hear people saying “well only disabled and vulnerable people will die of covid” and go “yes this is normal and ok and fine”

Hey! I love your dirk longform posts and I’ve been reading them like all day. The way you talk about him and his mental state is very refreshing and so well thought out it’s honestly some of my fav character studywork I’ve seen in a long time. I also just wanted to ask you, have you ever considered making a post on dirks trauma? I’d love to hear your thoughts on his sexual trauma & the abuse he was subjected to by bro! I just love the way you write so I’m very interested to know.Have a nice day!
well thank you I am always happy to see a convert. but honestly...no, I haven't, mostly because we've planned for trauma explorations to made through fics/art/mspfas and it feels a bit... well... I don't know. this is the kind of thing that would fall a little flat in essay form. I'm more interested in exploring his trauma with art of various snapshots of his life that either demonstrate abuse itself or the "aftermath" as he's an adult and trying to cope with everything he went through. I don't think I COULD write something up about this because, like... I don't know. how do you properly summarize a life of abuse into one neat little post. I couldn't do that about my own life.

imagine it's 1636 and you're in a tavern in, say, Dover with your friend, talking about trade and politics. after a while, he puts his tankard on the table, looks around, and says "You're finally ready to hear this. Holland is evil."
"Oh," you say, "you're having trouble with the tulips, too? I get it."
"No," he says, getting frustrated, "you don't get it. Holland, the land itself, is evil."
anyway that's what just happened in The Lascar's Dagger
EDIT oh my GOD this is not a recommendation. this was the most jarring thing i've experienced in a fantasy novel - an absolute betrayal of all the worldbuilding set up to this point, the intrusion of an '80s cliché on what seems to be attempting to be a nuanced '10s fantasy

Lolita dresses are so wild because there's basically three varieties.
Beautifully hand crafted ones with gorgeous details and a hand painted and dyed fabric, or a repurposed old dress found at a thrift store that has been embroidered by hand. This took hours, days, months to put together. You found these specific buttons that matched the exact ones in the dress at a consignment shop 2 hours away. This thing is art.
A super expensive 400 dollar dress made by a manufacturer that does not have a thing under 250, by the way you need the matching parasol and boots to complete the look, thats 300 and 600 respectively. We'll ship in 6 months.
You bought a Shein dress. Pattern is unaligned, the frills and ruffles and lace are held together by visible hot glue. the buttons do not function. It may be too big but it is also too small. This will only somehow fit a pre-pubescent kid right, and everyone else looks wrong. You look it up and its a knock off a 500 dollar dress from that one company. Its 120% polyester and has tons of loose strings. Theres a hole. You spent 100 dollars and you want to die.
