I realized the way I draw Scar was giving Milo Thatch core and Atlantis is one of my favorite movies from childhood. One thing led to another and here we are. Grian is Atlantean in this au with all his watcher fan lore. Scar is really just Scar but that’s okay, cause I love that whimsical man.

@gladumfdoodles has taken my half formed ideas and really ran with the au! They let me poke my nose in and give my two cents here and there but they’ve been in the kitchen cooking up a feast of a fic.

You know, it's kinda funny that Cuttlefish (Cuttletavio fics nonwithstanding) is so often underutilized or just written out entirely given that he has great potential to be a foil to Captain 3. Think about it. Most Captain 3s in the world have self-destructive tendencies of some sort, but I've seen stunningly few fics examine why that is. People don't just act and believe the things they do because that's just how they are, it's shaped by their experiences and—well, what other people tell them. So, where else would Captain 3 get their self-destructive tendencies from then Cuttlefish? He's their mentor, and he's seen the destruction of the Great Turf War firsthand. Of course he would encourage self-destructiveness and maybe xenophobic tendencies towards octolings. It's all he knows. When Captain 3 breaks away from these beliefs, he stands in contrast to them as someone who won't—who can't let go.

Have you ever noticed the hidden connection between Disney's Typhoon Lagoon water park and Atlantis the Lost Empire?

So, it is all about the family raft ride (ya know, the kind where 4 people ride together) called Miss Adventure Falls.

Because this is Disney, it isn't just a regular water slide. It has a story and characters and all that stuff. This ride is specifically about Captain Mary Oceaneer! An explorer, sailor, scientist, bad bitch, treasure hunter, etc...

She is also a member of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (aka S.E.A.) A secret society that works as a sort of meta narrative tying a bunch of Disney rides from around the world together. But that's not important right now, just cool to mention. I've talked about S.E.A. before anyways

What IS important right now is her sub! Rightby the exit to the slide you can see her underwater exploratory vehicle which has been blown ashore by the huge Typhoon that transformed the Placade Palms Resort into the Leaning Palms Resort and created Typhoon Lagoon (the story behind the water park as a whole)

(Notice the two beach chairs next to the sub. one for Captain Oceaneer and one for her parrot, Duncan)

Look real close at the sub and you'll see something a little odd

Look at those squiggles! Those aren't just squiggles! That's Atlantean Script! The language made by Mark Okrand (the guy who made Klingon) for Atlantis the Lost Empire! And we can translate it!

Captain Mary Oceaneer wanted the Atlanteans to know "I Come in Peace" as she explored the ocean! And I think that's neat as heck

Something I’ve found pretty funny lately is the dynamic between Joel and Buddy, and Lizzie and Buddy. Joel got Buddy the cat a few years ago from when the AU is set, right before he moved from the UK to Innsmouth. And for all the love and attention Joel shows him, Buddy thinks of his human as an acquaintance at best.

Then Lizzie shows up, an Atlantean from hundreds of years ago, and as soon as she meets Buddy he all but falls in love with her. New favorite human just dropped and it isn’t Joel. Joel is so mad; why is his cat snuggling up to his girlfriend from another time and place and- AUGH!

When Lizzie and Joel move in together they get Meri, who loves them both equally. (Thank goodness for Joel, loll, the man needs a win.)

#imaginary book recs #answered asks #this one was recommended to me by a friend whose tastes are much more cultured than mine #as in she's reading gormenghast and lord dunsany while i read mediocre self-published fairy tale retellings #i read the gutenberg version right on my computer while procrastinating #the description sounds more generic than it actually is #it's like a bridge between those victorian explorer atlantis lost land tales and a more modern take on fantasy #i wouldn't be surprised if it was an influence on tolkien or at least i suspect they're drawing from similar traditions #these people are much less noble and the narrative rather sadder than tolkien's #but i was still enthralled #sometimes you need to read about people who are better than you #and sometimes you need to watch the intrigues of people who fight and fail #and this one fits well into the latter tradition without losing that sense of wonder and goodness that undergirds good fantasy #the language is kind of dense but once you get going i found it rather readable #you have to be in the right mood and fortunately i found it at the right time #i'd like to see if i could find an annotated version one day #i don't know as much as i'd like about the origins and authorship and all those things like that #and at the very least i suspect there are worlds of references that i'm missing
