What's the artwork about..??? This artwork has won the Central Singapore Upcycling Contest in the People's Choice Award 2020. "Singing In The Rain '' is made out of old cassette tapes that have been collected over 30 years. Now, it has become obsolete. Something that is old and deemed as "Trash" has transformed into a masterpiece. It has a dual utilitarian purposes. One as an umbrella holder and another as a sculpture installation for your home interior decor. "Singing In The Rain" is titled as such because it incorporates the cassette tapes.The absence of music psychologically makes you imagine the music exists in your mind. A more of a visual interpretation rather than audionary. The umbrella symbolises both good and bad omen. On a more positive note, the symbolism of The Guardian Angel that protects you from rain and shine. It provides you shade. To the Chinese belief, it is bad luck to open an umbrella indoor. On the other hand, the Malay belief that it will invite snakes. Title Of Artwork: "The Walking Stick" 88 x 140cm Dimensions Variable 2021 -Jute, Walking Stick, Canvas Paper, Remnants From Assorted Fabric, Cotton String, Aerosol Spray Paint, Enamel, Pen Paint What's the artwork about? As time passes each year, our age is added, we are getting old. The walking stick is a representation of old age. Something that I'm afraid of. Am I going to be independent or dependent on others to make ends meet as I'm ushering into my golden age. Am I going to be in good health or sick? Who is going to take care of me when I grow old? Questions that are constantly playing at the back of my mind. An unprecedented future, yet we all need to brave through it. With the will of God, we shall overcome the fear with much resilience, patience & confidence. The interwoven assorted fabric identifies the multi ethnic groups in Singapore via diversified cultures. Connecting to one another as providing strength & support towards the greying community. Satin represents the Chinese community, batik denotes the Malay community, Saree is interpreted by the Indian community & other ethnicities from different materiality. Rooted to our individual tradition, "Unity In Diversity". The jute has its own historical significance. It symbolises trade in the early settlement era during the 18th century. The importation of rice has become the staple food in South East Asia. Most of the early settlers are migrant workers from China, India, Arab, Indonesia & Others. These migrant workers have contributed much to the macro economy of Singapore, from an insignificant fishing village into a metropolis today. The submission of artwork is subjected to approval. This artwork delves with the issues of climate change. Plastic is seen as the most discarded marine debris in the ocean and on Earth. The land, water and air pollution is predominantly related to plastic waste. Plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes. It takes 500 (or more) years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. Unfortunately the bags don't break down completely but instead photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment. "Oysters" got its inspiration from the Artist after having a buffet dinner, "Eat As Much As You Want" with a group of friends at Buffet Town, Raffles City. Often, he is inspired by everyday life, the everyday materials and almost anything and everything that is recyclable in his practice of Upcycling Art. Oyster is the common name for a number of different families of salt-water bivalve molluscs that live in marine or brackish habitats. In some species, the valves are highly calcified, and many are somewhat irregular in shape. Many, but not all oysters are in the superfamily Ostreoidea. Wikipedia No worries..!!!
