The story of Jesus Christ Superstar is the tragedy of its characters coming to realise that they have no power over their lives, fighting as much as they can against the role that history/God is forcing them to fulfil, but failing because they were doomed from the start.

Jesus in Gethsemane desperately asking God why should he be killed, how is that going to make anything better, only to realise that it doesn't matter what he believes or wants because it's already fixed ("why then am I scared to finish what I started? What you started, I didn't start it.") and there is nothing that can be done. Against his will, he will have to continue performing this role to its bitter end ("God, thy will is hard, but you hold every card. I will drink your cup of poison, nail me to your cross and break me, bleed me, beat me, kill me. Take me now, before I change my mind.")

Judas realises later, after he has already fulfilled his role in the story. This realization and regret leads him to commit suicide, being the only way out of a life that has already been fixed to make him the eternal villain ("you'll be remembered forever for this", "I shall be dragged through the slime and the mud")... even though this apparent choice of suicide was, following the same reasoning, also taken for him ("my God, I'm sick! I've been used! And you knew all the time. God! I'll never know why you chose me for your crime. Your foul, bloody crime. You have murdered me! Murdered me! Murdered me!"). Judas understands what he did, and he understands what he will be, forever. He understands that not only has he been Judas, he now knows what it means to be Judas: Jesus insulted him by telling him ("you liar, you Judas"). In the very end, he completely understands what it means to be a Judas, because of what he had done.

And Pilate is the last one to try by all means to escape his destiny. He's seen it in his dream, but he refuses to follow it. He refuses to sentence Christ, telling the crowd that he's a crazy man but that's not a crime, trying to convince them that it's against their best interest to ally with Rome, and begs Christ to let him help him get saved ("why do you not speak when I hold your life in my hands? How can you stay quiet? I don't believe you understand!") but of course, the post-Gethsemane Jesus already has accepted that they're doomed, and he's the one to tell Pilate ("you have nothing in your hands, any power you have comes to you from far beyond. Everything is fixed, and you can't change it."). The realization is dawning on Pilate as he desperately continues trying to cling to his ability to take meaningful choices, literally begging Christ to let him take that decision ("you're a fool Jesus Christ, how can I help you?") but with the crowd's shouts for crucifixion, and the crowd circling him and pushing him against the wall, he really does realize it: he has no choice; he will have to play his part in the story. And he knows how it will end, he knows what his role will mean, he also knows what it means to be Pilate ("then I saw thousands of millions crying for this man, and then I heard them mentioning my name and giving me the blame"). The only thing he can do is remove himself from it, but even then he is aware that that won't stop the already-fixed history ("I wash my hands from your demolition. Die if you want to, you innocent puppet").

After all, we saw it from the very first scene. Isn't this what the story's framing means? The overture shows the actors arriving to the filming set by bus and getting ready to play their role. And, at the end of the film, they pack and leave. They came here to recite a script that someone else wrote, to fulfil a story where everything is fixed, and they can't change it. That was what they were made for. Innocent puppets.

I've never been much of someone who believes in what I can't see- fate, destiny, God, magic- I suppose I accredit most of this to my overwhelming desire to maintain control over my life. I've always associated all these concepts with the lack of free will- doesn't the idea of soulmates erase the act of choice? Isn't it more meaningful to actively love, rather than love because the stars are telling you to, because you need to in order to fulfill your life, because you are half a person without them? I don't know. Maybe I never will. What matters is that last night I looked at someone and thought to myself for a second that there was no way that I wasn't made for this. There was no way that the moments I spent with his head in my hands weren't divinely placed. But then I thought, well, things don't have to be larger than life to mean so much. I am here. Wrapped around someone whose eyes seem to absorb everything I am and whose lips remind me of everything I am striving to become. And when I think of it in such simple terms, I stop spinning out about why this all is happening to me, and instead I am just so grateful that it is. The reality is that a kiss from the right person is not going to change my beliefs, but it will, and it has, made me acknowledge that everything that has ever happened in my life has led me to this point. I am not bowed thanking an invisible force, now. I am writing in the dark, feeling a serenity inside of me that can only be compared to the kind I felt at 7 as my mom braided my hair, and I am internally thanking every boy who has ever made me cry.

I'm continually losing my mind over how underused and underdeveloped asami was. I DO like TLoK a lot overall, and for the most part it has some phenomenal characters, but I feel like there's something fundamentally missing from the core Team Avatar group that prevents them from really gelling. What makes ATLA so outstanding isn't just the characters as individuals, but the dynamics between them. Every single member of the gaang is a foil to the other members in some way. Toph's bluntness balances Katara and Aang's sensitivity. Katara's overly-sensible attitude balances Toph rebelliousness and Aang's tendency to avoid his responsibilities. Sokka's pessimistic realism balances Aang and Katara's idealistic trust in fate and destiny. I could go on at length about this topic, but the long and short of it is that the gaang is so harmonius because every single core character contrasts with the others in numerous ways.

this is the main component missing from TLoK. even though many characters are well fleshed out as individuals, the main foursome don't have the harmony of the gaang. And i honestly think it could've been almost entirely resolved if they had utilised Asami more, because she's probably the most underbaked character in the franchise.

In TLoK's team avatar, they don't actually have a realist. Korra, Mako, and Bolin are all naive idealists in their respective ways, and they all tend to leap into the deep end without thinking stuff through. Korra usually thinks that the ends justify the means, and that it doesn't matter how she goes about something as long as it's for a good purpose. Mako has too much faith in the law, even when going by the proper channels limits what they can do. Bolin tends to take things at face value and trusts anyone who makes him feel good about himself, which means he gets manipulated by Kuvira and Varrick. Put simply, they're all naive optimists in their own ways. Bolin might be the Sokka stand-in when it comes to humour, but the group lacks Sokka's actual core trait, which is a tactical mindset and a focus on practicalities.

I firmly believe that Asami should've fulfilled this role. That's not to say that she should've been Sokka 2.0, but she was well poised to be the quieter, more grounded member of the group. She's a businesswoman and an inventer, not to mention the daughter of an underhand villain. Those traits lend themselves perfectly to a more cunning mindset, someone concerned with practicalities - who isn't afraid to slip through loopholes to get what they need, but understands that you can't be blasé about it. You've got to be shrewd in business, and after what happened with her father, it would make perfect sense for Asami to be less trusting than the other characters.

If she was a cool-headed realist, someone who really thought before she acted, that would make her an excellent foil to all of the other characters. It could create conflict with them, too, which she sorely needs. Asami's main issue is that she has no meaningful flaws, so her character can't really grow over the series. Give me an Asami that's a little cold in her approach, who needs to trust more, who has to accept that she doesn't have all the answers. Give me an Asami who challenges Korra's perspective, rather than just coming along for the ride and making a few machines along the way. Give me an Asami who actually affects and engages with the main plot, rather than being relegated to a plot device every time.

Had they used Asami in a more meaningful way, it would have made all of the other characters more interesting. ATLA's characterisation steps it up in season 2 because Toph's personality brings out the best in the rest of the cast. Characters don't exist in a vacuum - they need contrast to shine. With TLoK's team avatar, the writers didn't spend enough time focusing on how each character would balance the others as individuals. So the whole group suffered.

They also just completely shafted Asami, even on an independent level. That gal had so much potential, but they made her an accessory to Korra and Mako's dumb relationship drama for two seasons. Her treatment is better in 3 and 4, but she's still pushed to the sidelines and doesn't get a proper arc. And considering that she ends up as Korra's main love interest, she really, really deserved better.

"#i will never recover from dany's arc #it killed and buried me" why such strong feelings? is it because you enjoyed it from beginning to end? or is it because of how they concluded it and how things seem now in retrospect? maybe both? and she wasn't/isn't even a fave of yours, was she?

Both, but mostly the second, and I just can’t reconcile the fact that I DID enjoy it, even the end, in a weird way (because I’m a sucker for tragic antiheroes + existential tragedies and because Emilia’s performance gave show!Dany a depth that I didn’t believe was possible) with the fact that I wanted something completely different from her arc, and the story in general, and I just have no idea what to do with this finale or how I’m supposed to feel about the series now. I find it hard to look back at season 1 knowing this is her endgame, and the story’s endgame by extension (because yes, the two go hand in hand, more on that later).

I can’t even shrug it off as bad writing like I have done in the past with True Blood, for example—while the writing was questionable, I’m pretty sure the main beats of the story remained faithful to George’s outline (and it’s not like this is a character twist that doesn’t have roots in what Dany is, in what her struggle and her main character conflict has always been: to be a good queen—but also, to take what is hers. To fulfill her destiny. To live up to the enormous responsibility of being the last drop of the blood of old Valyria with three dragons under her command. Of all the main characters in asoiaf Dany is the most aware of her chosen one role, and the one who clings the most to the idea of being born for greatness, of having a bigger purpose. Like, her entire identity is built around that. It’s both her fuel and her coping mechanism and if THAT falls apart, she will too. She has foils in Stannis and in book!Aegon, and everyone in the asoiaf fandom seems to agree that their stories are going to end horribly, but is their chosen one hubris wrong and doomed to a tragic fall only because they’re not the real deal? I mean, is this a narrative that would satisfy George RR Martin?)

anyway yes I have strong feelings because Dany’s arc is inextricably tied to the overall story. She isn’t just a main character; she’s quintessential. And not just because she’s the titular “Fire”---she’s absolutely iconic and representative of this series in a way that not even the individual Starklings are, imho. And okay maybe she’s never been one of my “faves”, in the sense that maybe there are characters whose internal conflict I find more relatable on a personal level, or pov chapters I enjoy reading more (and I blame this on the fact that Dany’s chapters lack interaction with other main characters, or connections with the main action in Westeros, which makes them less engaging compared to others), but I literally cannot imagine asoiaf without the thrill and the anticipation that her storyline provided. Her progressive rise in Essos was, book after book, season after season, the measure of where the story was going—the sign that it was going somewhere at all. Because why else would Martin waste entire chapters detailing the evolution of a character with seemingly no connection to the main plot? The more powerful she got, the closer she was to Westeros, to the moment her story would intertwine with the rest of the cast. Her dragons were getting bigger, eating people, becoming unruly? Good, because they’d need to be huge to defeat the Others. etc.

and it’s really hard to look back at those expectations now, at that whole build up. Because what season 8 really did was dismantling the chosen one myth—her chosen one myth—piece after piece and leaving her with nothing but rage and bitterness. Combined with Jon’s arc, it was a complete negation of the chosen one narrative, actually. And this—this, my friends, I believe is absolutely in line with what GRRM would do, even if the execution and the details will probably differ a lot. But I’ll eat my hat if George misses the opportunity to explore the psychology of a prophesied hero who suddenly and rather unceremoniously loses his purpose (worse: didn’t live up to the role he imagined for himself) and is left directionless, his or her identity deflating like a balloon. Now, if there’s one thing I’m absolutely certain the show botched and the books will do better is keeping Dany’s pov front and center (rather than having her retreat into essentially an object, no longer able to critically examine her own action, suddenly immune to feelings of guilt and conflict so that she can be summarily judged mad and executed by the pov male heroes), and have her existential tragedy be mirrored by Jon’s more poignantly. (I’m also fairly certain that Martin will be able to have an entire coda dedicated to the final deconstruction of the chosen hero narrative without making the War for the Dawn look like a mild inconvenience, but that’s another topic)

but I also completely understand and feel for those who would absolutely HATE this character twist in the books anyway, even if done 1000x better. Dany’s story being a tragedy makes the whole story a tragedy, and has a serious impact on the rewatchability/rereadability of the series. Not that we were expecting a full blown happy ending, but there’s bittersweet and there’s… making a character arc collapse on itself after destroying every meaningful relationship she’s ever had, without even letting her have some final words or acknowledge her mistakes or have any sort of agency in her death—when her entire arc has been finding her own agency, her own voice. agh. :// it just keeps hurting.
