#even if hardison struggles with his dragon

Text
I just imagined Eliot as a dragon rider and I can't unsee it.
Now I want a Medieval Fantasy AU where they are all dragon riders. Hardison has trouble with his dragon and all the other riders (Besides Eliot and Parker) make fun of him for it.
So, Eliot and Parker help him- and Hardison becomes the best rider of them all. And then they band together to take down bad guys.
...also I haven't really slept in 24+ hours so this may sound totally stupid.

Ichigo/Chad - Blind Date AU
“I’m so sorry you got dragged into this,” Ichigo groaned, hiding his face in his hands, his usual furrow between his brows. Chad allowed himself a small moment of disappointment before reaching for Ichigo’s hands and tugging them down from his face. When Ichigo met his eyes, he smiled at him, fondly as always and Ichigo responded with his own small and precious smile.
“Do you still want to go in?” he asked, tilting his head towards the restaurant.
“You don’t have to,” Ichigo replied, looking sheepish again. “Rukia’s just. She’s trying to help.” Chad nodded, guiding Ichigo away from the entrance with a hand on his lower back. Ichigo didn’t like being inside when he felt agitated. He leaned into the touch and walked with him, his shoulder’s loosening. “It’s good to see you,” he said after they were down the street from the restaurant, beaming at him, eyes warm. Chad nodded in agreement, and Ichigo bumped him with his shoulder.
“How’s your family?”
“Dad’s as annoying as always,” he started with a roll of his eyes, “but Yuzu and Karin are in their last year of high school.” He brightened completely at the mention of his sisters. “They’re third and fourth in their class. Karin has been taking karate lessons from Tatsuki and Yuzu started a cooking channel on youtube.” Chad hummed to show he was still listening, pulling him a little closer when the crowd got denser. Ichigo’s hand came up and curled in the back of his shirt, leaning his head on Chad’s shoulder in an affectionate bump.
“How’s studying to be a teacher?”
“Good. I get to assist in a classroom next semester.”
“What year?” he asked, his smile and eyes soft and warm around the edges now, shifting a little closer himself this time.
“Second.”
“They’re gonna love you,” Ichigo declared.
“Thank you,” he murmured, pleased, and looked down at Ichigo again, now tucked under his arm. He was always so tactile, and he was only too happy to oblige. They fell into an easy silence, the crowds thinning again as the dinner rush came into full swing. Ichigo shivered at Chad’s side as the sky darkened, and Chad rubbed his hand over Ichigo’s arm.
“How did Rukia get you here anyway?”
“She told me I would be going on a date with you.”
Ichigo froze, and Chad stopped with him. He hadn’t stepped away, which Chad supposed was a good sign.
“You knew the date was with me?”
“Of course.”
Ichigo whirled out of his arms and kept Chad where he was with his hands on Chad’s shoulders.
“Can we start the date over?”
Chad tilted his head in confusion, but nodded, adding “If that’s what you want.” If Ichigo’s grins were bright before, it was blinding right now as he nodded. Once more, Chad couldn’t help but smile back. Ichigo wrapped his arm around Chad’s waist and nudged Chad with his shoulder in the short amount of time it took Chad to wrap an arm around him again, and they headed back to the restaurant.
Grimmjow/Urahara/Yoruichi - Bodyguard AU
Grimmjow clenched his teeth and nodded at Yoruichi.
“Okay, on three. One,” she started, and then wrenched his shoulder back into place. Grimmjow hissed and glared at her, but she just grinned back. “Good as new,” she said even as she poked at his shoulder.
“What are you doing then?” He kept his tone bored and Yoruichi pretended not to notice the strain in his voice, reminding him why they made such a good team.
“Feeling you up.”
Grimmjow rolled his eyes. She grabbed his arm and moved it up, to the side, back down, up again.
“Everything feel okay?”
“A little stiff, but it should be fine.”
“How do you know he’s not lying?” Urahara asked, voice filled with a forced levity neither of them called him out on. They also ignored his tightly crossed arms.
“He doesn’t lie on a job.”
“He can hear you,” he grumbled, stretching his arm out.
“He also gets grouchy when he doesn’t get to finish a fight.”
“Why start a fight if you’re just gonna run away?” he exclaimed. “And for fuck’s sake get over here,” he snapped. Urahara jumped, covering his shocked expression with the same appeasing, bland smile. Yoruichi leaned back until she was reclining on her arms, amusement radiating from every inch of her. Grimmjow cocked an eyebrow at Urahara, and evidently he was too curious to resist.
“What is it?” he asked once he was standing over them.
“Sit down, I don’t need a sore neck on top of everything else.”
Urahara made to sit and did not yelp when Grimmjow shoved him so he landed next to Yoruichi instead.
“You’re supposed to be protecting me, not injuring me!” he cried, whirling to look at Grimmjow on his other side.
“Try that on someone who actually believes your hopeless nerdy scientist routine,” Yoruichi drawled, sitting up again, her own smile unaffected even as Urahara’s froze on his face.
“That’s not the secret we’re tackling today,” Grimmjow said with a dismissive wave.
“I think you both know I’m too boring to have secrets,” he stammered. They both leveled him with looks so icily unimpressed that he almost hung his head in shame. Knowing them, they were less irritated by the lie and more how shoddy it was.
“Anyway, how much more do we have to flirt before you finally ask us out?” Yoruichi asked. “We’re both running out of excuses to lose our shirts.”
“And shirts,” Grimmjow added, shrugging his bare shoulder where his tank top strap should have been. Urahara’s mouth opened and closed helplessly, for once completely clueless on how to respond.
“Would you like to go on a date?” he asked finally, figuring that was a good place to start. They both grinned and leaned closer, twin yeses wafting warm over his ear and neck. “How did the conversation get here?” he asked.
Yoruichi shrugged and said, “We decided a few days ago to give you one more week to figure it out. If you didn’t then we’d give you a nudge.”

Wei Ying/Lan Zhan - Role Reversal AU
He traded the pristine whites and soft blues of his robes for something more functional, staked out a camp in the swirling miasma of resentful energy and mountains of death, and even then Lan Zhan still looked like untouchable jade. Wei Ying was tempted to ask what his secret was, but he suspected it was simply how stunningly beautiful he was.
“Let me carry you back,” he blurted out instead. Lan Zhan’s rosy lips parted, dark eyes widening just slightly before his expression shuttered again.
“No need.” He moved around Wei Ying and continued walking to the burial mounds, carefully stiff to hide the limp and broken ribs. Wei Ying ran so he was in front of him again.
“I can help with Wen Ning, and Wen Qing will have my head if she finds out I let you hike up a mountain like this.”
“Wei Ying isn’t letting me do anything,” he said, but before he could move around him again, Wei Ying laid a gentle hand on his arm.
“Lan Zhan please. Let me help you,” he said, echoing Lan Zhan’s own plea. Lan Zhan stopped, his icy mask faltering just enough for Wei Ying to see the uncertainty, the exhaustion, the pain. Lan Zhan had always been so softly, blessedly human. He nodded, and Wei Ying beamed at him. He turned and crouched down so Lan Zhan could climb onto his back. It was the fastest way to get him back to Wen Qing, and there was less of a risk of Lan Zhan reaching a meridian by accident and feeling his missing golden core. He felt warmth at his back before Lan Zhan’s weight on him, and waited until his arms were around his shoulders, Bichen dangling in front of them both, before standing. Lan Zhan’s arms tightened around him in surprise, but he was otherwise quiet and still.
“Don’t worry, Lan Zhan! We’ll be back at the burial mounds in no time, and between the two of us we can definitely restore Wen Ning’s consciousness.”
“Mn.”
Wei Ying smiled to himself at the instant agreement.
“And Wen Qing will have you fixed up in no time. Does she bully you with her needles too?”
“Wen Qing doesn’t bully me.”
“Ah, you would say that Lan Zhan. You’re so patient with everyone. I used to think you were a stick in the mud until I got to know you better,” he said, ignoring the hitch—likely from pain—in Lan Zhan’s breath. “You’re actually a really good guy.” Lan Zhan’s arms tightened around his shoulders briefly and loosened again. “You can hold on tighter if you want, Lan Zhan. And don’t think I didn’t notice how you spoiled A-Yuan. Is it that you like cute things? I remember you like rabbits.” Lan Zhan’s arms tightened a little around his shoulders, and slowly the last of his weight leaned on him, his silken cheek pressed to Wei Ying’s.
“Wei Ying does not have to carry me all the way up.”
“I’ll do it anyway. You shouldn’t be walking on a broken leg Lan Zhan, and Wen Qing might not bully you but she’d definitely pick on me.” He shifted him carefully to secure his grip on him. “Now hold on tight Lan Zhan. This path is a little steep and I wouldn’t want to drop such precious cargo.”
Lan Zhan’s breath hitched again, and Wei Ying made a note to be even more careful about his grip on his injured leg.
Lan Xichen/Wen Ning - Royalty AU
Wen Ning remembers his first impression of Lan Xichen: gentle smile and impeccable manners. He remembers the overwhelming feeling of relief that his betrothed seems kind—not that his sister would have allowed otherwise. Even if his fiancée didn’t love him, maybe they could still be friends, he hoped.
Wen Ning supposes that impression still holds even now.
A pretty flush started on Lan Xichen’s ears and spread to those high cheekbones, his sweet smile even wider than normal, his crown and ribbon slightly askew on his head.
“Wen-gongzi!!!” he cried, standing quickly in what would have been a scramble if Lan Xichen were any less graceful. Wei Wuxian hid a laugh behind his drink, his own husband staring dazedly at him at his side. “Didi look!!!” Lan Xichen said to Lan Wangji, prompting him to look away from Wei Wuxian and to his older brother. “My fiancée is here!!!”
Wen Ning felt his face flame even as something unfurled in his chest at hearing Lan Xichen sound so happy to see him. Still, he was here for a reason.
“W-Wei-gongzi, why did you c-call me?”
“I do remember giving you permission to call me Wei Ying,” he replied with a playful grin.
Lan Xichen took his hands in his before Wen Ning could muster a reply.
“I asked him to,” he said earnestly, squeezing his hands. “I have a very important question.” Wen Ning found himself standing straighter at the serious look on his face, nodding in response.
“Of c-course, Lan-gongzi.”
“This is important,” he said again, nodding gravely. “May I call you A-Ning?”
“W-what?!”
“May I call you A-Ning?” he repeated patiently, that wide, beautiful smile still on his face.
“Y-You can call m-me whatever you w-want, Lan-gongzi.”
To his confusion, Lan Xichen vehemently shook his head.
“Only if it’s alright with you,” he declared. “And may I hug you?” he added. “I like you so much!!!” Lan Xichen looked so happy, so hopeful. Wen Ning felt the all his blood rush to his head.
“Y-you c-can,” he finally whispered, voice hoarse. “T-to b-both, I w-want you t-to.” He found he truly meant it, too, his stuttering getting worse with just how much he wants it, how much his nervousness was choking him. Lan Xichen’s arms were around him in an instant, sweeping him in so he was completely pressed to his warm, firm body, his face tucked into the crook of his neck. Lan Xichen’s chin rested on the top of his head as he swayed them back and forth, and Wen Ning worked his arms out from between them to hug him back.
“I can’t wait for the courting period, A-Ning,” he said, only a little quieter than before. “I’m going to spoil you! So much!” Wen Ning buried his face deeper. He swallowed and took a deep breath, like his sister taught him, and pulled away enough to look up at him.
“T-Thank you, A-Huan,” he whispered. Lan Xichen gasped and beamed down at him, squeezing him impossibly closer.
“I like you so much, A-Ning!!!”
Then all his weight dropped onto Wen Ning.
He caught him, looking at Wei Wuxian when the man laughed.
“He’s asleep,” he reassured in between giggles, wiping at his eyes. Still, there was something soft and delighted in his expression, enough to reassure Wen Ning this wasn’t a joke of some kind.
“W-what should I d-do?”
“If we wait a little while, he’ll sober up.” He took another sip of his drink, and Wen Ning only now noticed Lan Zhan asleep on Wei Wuxian’s shoulder. “Sit with me, and bring him with you. I’m sure he’d like waking up with his head in your lap.” Wen Ning hid behind Lan Xichen again, sure his face matched his robes. Still, he half carried, half dragged him to the table, carefully easing them down until they both sat and, after a moment of self-conscious hesitation, pushed Lan Xichen’s legs further out and guided his head to his lap.
Wei Ying met his eyes across the table, undeniably pleased. He pushed a cup to him, already filled with wine, but Wen Ning shook his head.
“N-no thank y-you, Wei-g--” he stopped, deciding to take another risk tonight. “W-Wei Y-Ying.” Wei Ying grinned. They sat in companionable silence until Wei Ying set his cup down with a quiet, definitive clack.
“He meant every word you know.”
Wen Ning nodded.
“He w-wouldn’t lie,” he agreed softly. Wei Ying stared at him for a moment, oddly serious, before the grin was back on his face.
“As long as you know that.” He took another sip of his drink. “Also, you might want to brace yourself for the courting period.” Wen Ning cocked his head to the side, a silent question. Wei Ying’s grin was a little frightening this time around in its blatant amusement, clearly at Wen Ning’s expense this time. “The Lans don’t half ass wooing.”
Wen Ning felt his cheeks warm again.
Evie/Rick/Ardeth - Paranormal Investigator AU
Sorry this one is so short! I couldn’t think of much for it unfortunately
“Evie, darling,” Rick said with a stare that spoke of being completely desensitized to this very situation, “please step out of the pentagram.”
“Oh!” She looked around and realized she was indeed standing in the middle of the pentagram, painted on the floor in a red liquid that Rick refused to contemplate the origins of. “Well, at least we know we’re going in the right direction. This was in my vision.” She still hadn’t stepped out of the pentagram, but before Rick could point that out again Ardeth walked by and took her hand, gently tugging her out of it. Evie swung the flashlight around again, distracted, as Rick and Ardeth shared a fond grin.
“See any ghosts so far?” Rick asked.
“No. I can’t sense any either.”
“So is this place haunted or just creepy?”
“Too soon to tell,” Evie replied, looking closely at the walls for any distinctive features. Ardeth looked to the side and ran his hand along the markings, neither of them noticing the pipe Rick willed away from their heads.

Dammit, Dean Devlin.
Once upon a time, there was this little show called Leverage.
It first aired in 2008. It had 5 seasons, 77 episodes, 5 main characters.
I was probably fifteen when I first laid eyes on this little show. I was at my dad's, it was some time after dinner, we were watching TV. And there it was, that first episode. We watched it, it was fun.
Over the course of a couple of years, I kept catching that episode on TV. But only the first one. Never more than that.
I forgot about it and was surprised every time I saw the episode. And I kept thinking, I wanna check this out, this looks like fun.
I think either shortly before the last season aired in 2012, or shortly after, I finally remembered the show well enough to go, okay, let's watch this. I have not been the same person since.
This little show called Leverage is without a doubt the best show I have ever seen in my life, and it is to this day still the only thing that has never disappointed me once. I loved Chuck, but it was not perfect. I had issues with it. I love the Marvel Netflix stuff, I think it's fun. But it's not perfect. I adore NCIS and The Mentalist. Are they perfect? Nope.
But I cannot find one single flaw about Leverage. I love it with all my heart and I would not change one single thing. Well, maybe I would've not cancelled it after five seasons. But even with that....it rounds off so perfectly. The last season, the finale, it is so fucking perfect.
One of the things that made Leverage so perfect, were the absolutely fantastic main characters and the development they had over those five seasons. I feel like I could write endlessly about the character development in this show. It's so marvellous and so well done.
You have Nate Ford, the "leader" of the group, this little family. The ex-insurance fraud detective, so broken, so flawed, such a wonderful jerk. He makes sure that the plans work, he is the mastermind behind their cons, their grifts, their thefts. He is the puppet master. Ah, I adooooore him. His alcoholism and control issues were never glamorised, it wasn't sugarcoated, and he was not vilified for it. He grew so much in those five seasons, he changed a lot, and yet he never betrayed his own character. Tim Hutton just smashes this role. I really, truly adore him.
You have Sophie Devereaux, femme fatale, grifter extraordinaire, a character so diverse, so beautifully portrayed by Gina Bellman, from episode to episode different, and yet still only one very complex and wonderfully crafted character. While Nate is the one who makes sure that the plan works, Sophie is the one to make sure that everyone gets out of it alive, unharmed, safe. She is the caretaker. To watch a grifter struggle with identity issues is such a great thing. Watching Sophie finding herself, finding her own dreams and ambitions, finding her calling over those five seasons, was such a treat.
That's the "parents". Then you have the "kids".
Alec Hardison, a motherfuckin' ray of sunshine. Hardison is the nerd, the geek, master of computers, the best hacker on earth, and just an all around joy. Only 22 when they started filming, Aldis Hodge is so fucking young but he plays him like a master. Aldis absolutely acts the shit out of that character. Hardison is such a sweetheart. On my first round through the show, he was definitely my favorite character, I identified with him so much. He was handsome, he was elegant, he had style, he was such a beautifully crafter character, and he still was the nerd and he is still black. You don't usually get that. Hardison is so incredibly kind and loving and all he wants is for his little family of criminals to feel good, to be safe, to feel loved. He gives them a home wherever they go. Aldis Hodge fucking rocked this role and I can't do anything but applaud him.
Then you have Parker, the all around misfit. Usually, in every other show, her character would be dismissed as either the "beauty" just there for the male gaze, or the weirdo who is the butt of every joke. But not with Leverage. Just like the other characters, she is wonderfully portrayed by Beth Riesgraf, has so many interesting layers and we learn so much about her over those five seasons. Parker is the world's greatest thief, she likes money for money's sake, she experienced a lot of bad things, was hurt in so many ways, and came out of it anyway. She found her own family, the people who did not dismiss her as a freak, an outcast, but embraced her being different, maybe a little weird, and loved her anyway. The relationships she builds with the other characters are so very different from each other, so well thought out, so wonderfully done. And what Leverage does so masterfully is that it does not pit Sophie and Parker against each other. It gives you a beautiful friendship between those two women, who could not be different from each other. There is so much love, respect and understanding between those characters. It's so refreshing to see. Have I mentioned how much I love this show already? I fucking love this show.
And then you have Eliot Spencer. Oh, I could cry buckets just thinking about him. I have never in my life seen such beautiful character development. What they did with Eliot over those five seasons is an absolute masterpiece of writing. Eliot -- the hitter, the fighter, the stone cold cowboy, whose fists say more than his mouth -- that guy changes so much. But not just that, he's not just the fighter. He's the "beau" mostly, and not Sophie. And he is incredibly passionate about cooking. You have this knife-wielding, punch-throwing, fucking badass, and he loves cooking. There is so much history revealed over the course of the show and he learns so. fucking. much. He goes from "You all annoy me and I'm just here for revenge and money" to "I will protect these people from this unjust world with my life and I would take on dragons and mountain trolls if it meant that they are safe and protected". Christian Kane is such a wonderful actor and he gives this character an immense amount of depth and he has more than three dimensions. Eliot is a masterpiece. And I love him to pieces. I could write ESSAYS about him. Long, wordy, essays.
You have this beautiful little family of thieves, of criminals, con-men, flawed, hurt, wonderful people. Incredibly gorgeously crafted characters, played so magnificently by all these great, amazing actors.
Leverage has rocked my world and sparked so many different interests in me. I would be a completely different person without it. I have no idea how many times I have watched it through. I spent at least half a year just going through it over and over and over again. As soon as I watched the finale, I put the first season on again, no stops, no pauses. It never got boring, I kept seeing new things, kept making connections between certain things. This show brought me so much joy. I love it with all my heart.
What Dean Devlin and John Rogers created is a show that makes me feel at home, that makes my heart swell with love, that was just absolutely fucking perfect. And still, it got cancelled and the last season ended in 2012.
Two years later, a NATO counter terrorism agent is in the middle of taking down terrorist and stopping a bomb from exploding, when suddenly an arrogant, brilliant, kind of dashing guy shows up, talks about ancient artefacts and curses and mythologies, and helps the agent stopping the bomb.
And with that, The Librarians is born. Or better yet, reborn into a tv show. By whom? None other than John Rogers and Dean Devlin.
What is it? Well, it's a little show that just finished it's fourth season. It's a show about a team of people who would've never found together if they had not been thrown into this adventure. They could not be different.
You have Flynn Carsen, a kind of arrogant, incredibly brilliant and well-versed guy, who is kind of dashing, has a tendency to go off and do things by himself, and is, more or less, the "leader" of the group.
You have Eve Baird, ex-NATO agent, the actual leader of the group, the protector, who sees to it that everyone gets out of the adventures alive. She is the guardian. Eve is a strong, independent woman who don't need no man, but chooses to have one anyway, because that self-destructive, arrogant idiot is so very intriguing, and he genuinely cares about her.
You have Ezekiel Jones, a Korean-Australian, nerd, computer genius, thief and, deep down, a sweetheart. He is more arrogant than anyone, he loves nothing more than himself, and saying his name, but he does have a heart. A big one. And he loves his new-found family.
You have Cassandra Killian, a quirky, pretty, absolutely brilliant young lady, who does not always fit in. She gets excited about things at the wrong time, she is overly hyperactive at times, but so so loyal, and caring, and loving.
And then you have Jacob Stone. The fighter. The brawler. The country kid from Oklahoma. The one you look at and think, that guy has skin like stone, nothing can hurt him, and he has no soft side. You have this tough ass bitch of a guy.... and he is soooooooo passionate about art, about architecture, about literature, about poetry. He quotes some author in every episode. He gets excited about museums and buildings and old symbols and engravings. And he cares so much about these people he only just met, he will protect them with everything he's got. A big teddy bear, a softie.
(Then you also have Jenkins who is just absolutely fantastic and I adore him and I could go on for ages about him but words could not make him justice, so I'm not trying. Also, he is kinda not relevant for my point.)
Now look at those five characters.
Leader guy, arrogant, self-destructive, cares so much but can't really express it, runs from commitment for the longest time, but actually wants to stay, just doesn't know how?
Strong, independent woman who's actually kind of the leader, sees to it that everyone feels good, doesn't need a man, but falls for the one who runs away anyway?
Nerdy, non-white computer guy, who knows he is awesome at what he does, is unconventionally stylish compared to the usual type of this character, cares about his new found family a lot and tries to support them with new ideas?
Brilliant, weird woman but absolutely beautiful in her own way, very caring but can't express it sometime, quirky and hyperactive?
Badass softie with a super specific interest he is brilliant at despite it maybe being considered effeminate in comparison to his other super manly, buff-ness, played by Christian Kane?
Sound familiar?
Nate or Flynn, Sophie or Eve, Hardison or Ezekiel, Parker or Cassie, Eliot or Jacob?
I am NOT saying these are exactly the same characters, far from it. They are all their own wonderful selves. But there are similarities there that I just adore so much. I admit, I think of Jacob as just an alias of Eliot's that he had before he joined the Leverage crew, and he is indeed the very same person. But that's just me, because I love Leverage so much and I miss it with all my heart and having the opportunity to have Eliot live on in something else? I'll take it in a heart beat.
I started watching The Librarians a few weeks ago. I am close to finishing season three now. It took me about two seasons to warm up to Flynn, and I admit I still don't like him as much as I loved Nate. I admit, Ezekiel still pisses me off a lot because of his constant "I am Ezekiel Jones". And yet... I still like them. I still think they are wonderfully crafted characters.
I did not mean to like The Librarians. I did go into this show thinking that I probably won't like it because it's not Leverage. These are not my beloved characters and this is not the best show on earth. But it's a good show. It's a beautiful show. It's lovely.
And I fucking HATE that I like it so much, because I really did not want to love another show. I am so pissed at myself for really liking it.
But I do. And I wish this show all the best. Season four just ended and the campaigning for a fifth season is on its way. I think it really deserves it. I am so on board for a fifth season.
I have one more thing to say.
Dammit. Dammit, Dean Devlin. Dammit, John Rogers. I did not want to like this show. And yet your wonderful show is exactly that. Wonderful. Adorable. Lovely.
I really miss Leverage. I miss it so much. And I wish you'd make a movie, get the gang back together again for one last job. Just one more time breaking the law, no encores.
(Thank you Dean, John, and also Chris Downey, for Leverage. It still is everything I ever wanted from a TV show and still the only show that never disappointed me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You guys are the best.)

It isn’t like Marco makes a habit of letting his phone ring on and on. It isn’t at all like he usually stares at the caller ID and wonders why he’s being called. It isn’t like he usually questions whether or not he should pick up his phone.
It’s just-
This is Sabo. And he’s never been called by Sabo.
He hesitates and this time Izo pays attention, wandering up to him with a frown on his face and a cup of tea in his hands. “Aren’t you going to answer it?” he asks, and Marco makes a little noise in the back of his throat, tilting the screen so Izo can see it. “Oh,” Izo says. Then, he rolls his eyes. “Why does he only ever call to yell at you?”
“Because he doesn’t like me?” Marco says in return, then quickly swipes to answer before Sabo finds another thing to get annoyed about.
Sabo’s already speaking before Marco can say a word, words tripping over each other in a staggering rush, but the way he speaks-
He sounds like he’d been talking before Marco had even picked up the phone, and it makes him frown, trying to pick up Sabo’s story. He’s about to ask Sabo to slow down when he suddenly hears a sharp hitch of breath, and he’s hit with the sudden realisation that Sabo is crying.
Sabo is crying.
“Are you okay?” he finds himself asking, unable to stop himself, and Izo’s eyes sharpen at the look on Marco’s face. Sabo’s suddenly silent, confronted by Marco’s voice, and Marco’s heart is in his throat, the faintest tinge of panic making him worry. For all that Sabo doesn’t like him, he’s still Ace’s brother, and Marco won’t let anything hurt Ace.
“’re not Ace,” Sabo mumbles, voice low and disoriented, “s’all- colours and Ace. I need- Ace, I ma- made- a mistake, I need-”
“Where are you?” Marco asks, already pushing past his brothers, and Izo’s on his heels, snagging the car keys from Marco’s hand and helping herd Marco out the door, telling their brothers to shush. Sabo’s still silent, so it’s not like the bustle that has sprung up within their house will really make Marco miss what Sabo says next, but it’s still helpful that they’re being quiet.
“I don’t-” Sabo says, and takes a shuddering breath, “know,” he says, short and sharp and fast, like he can barely get it out. He whines, shaky and pained, “I don’t know I don’t-”
Marco’s eyes go wide as he clips his seatbelt in, and Izo starts the car, gaze resting uncomfortably on Marco as he waits for an address. “Sabo, it’s okay, calm down. Are you near a street sign? Can you tell me what you see?”
“Don’t tell me to calm down,” Sabo spits, but the words aren’t nearly as threatening as they usually are. Thatch slides into the back of the car, brandishing his GPS when Izo glares and opens his mouth to kick him out, but Marco silences them both with a glare when Sabo starts to talk again. “Was- was on- a job, for Dragon. And I-” Sabo goes silent again, but Marco can hear him stumbling around, falling against things as he tries to walk. He hits something hard, if his muffled grunt is anything to go by, but finally seems to remember he was talking to someone and manages to continue, “In my drink, when I was- interviewing them- gave me- something.”
He heaves, breath too fast and too shallow, but he finally manages to give Marco an address; “Was on Hardison, in the CBD. But now I- I hear the sea?”
“Hardison, by the sea,” he snaps to Izo, and then says to Sabo. “We’re coming, Sabo.”
“I don’t need-” Sabo snaps, but his voice shakes and he has to stop. When he speaks again, the softness of his words sounds like a surrender: “don’t leave.”
Awkward hesitation holds him on the phone, and Marco’s brow knits as he tries to think of what to do - of what to say to someone who sees him as an irritation, to be ignored or insulted.
Sabo suddenly gags and Marco winces, recognising the sound of someone throwing up from years of taking care of his brothers. Sabo’s breath hitches into a sob, panicked and short, and Marco grits his teeth, wishing he knew what to do to help. He can’t even call Ace like he’d planned because he doesn’t want to leave Sabo to battle this panic alone.
“Sabo-” he tries, “just stay calm-”
“Fuck you,” Sabo says, almost hysterical, but he’s taken a deeper breath and though he still sounds drunk he’s at least grabbed something to focus on.
“I don’t really put that on offer,” Marco replies easily, and this, at least, this is something he knows how to deal with. Sharp tongue and sharp mind and Sabo won’t rest until he has the last word, so maybe Marco can keep him awake and sane.
“No-one would take you up on it,” Sabo says, and Marco closes his eyes, giving a soft, thankful breath.
“That’s what you think,” he says, and can’t help but be proud that his voice doesn’t shake.
“It’s what anyone with eyes would think,” Sabo returns, but then he whimpers again, pained and fearful. Marco can’t listen and pulls the phone away from his ear, covering the microphone so that he can say,
“Izo, please.”
“It’s hard when the only direction I have is a single street name,” Izo snaps, his hands tightening around the steering wheel, and then Thatch lunges from the backseat, holding up his GPS.
“This is the only place on Hardison near enough to the docks for Sabo to hear the sea.”
Izo snatches it off him, sticking it on the windscreen and taking off down the dark streets, and Marco quickly puts the phone back to his ear, his heart aching with how Sabo’s sobs echo through the receiver.
“We’re coming, Sabo, we’re coming, I promise.”
“Ace-” he whispers, “Ace, no, you’re with Luffy-”
Marco bites his tongue, weighing in an instant the consequences of a half-truth before he says gently, “Luffy’s fine, Sabo.”
“Don’t bring him,” Sabo pleads, and Marco hears a metallic thunk and Sabo’s teeth chattering, “I don’t- can’t see me like- ah, Ace-” he stops, voice low, and Marco almost misses it when Sabo admits, “it hurts. Fuck, it hurts, I’m- scared.”
This is the first time he’s ever heard Sabo cry. He can’t help but hope that it’s also the last.
“Luffy’s asleep,” he says instead of trying to get Sabo to stop sounding like that, “he won’t see, it’s okay. Just concentrate on staying awake, okay? Concentrate on happy things.”
“What happy things?” Sabo says hoarsely, but it’s coupled with a dark laugh and Marco grits his teeth into a teasing grin.
“Murder?“
“You’re a terrible influence,” Sabo says, but it’s too soft, too weak, too-
Izo slows and Marco’s about to snap when he notices where they are. His heart thumps painfully hard in his chest as he racks the dark streets, and when he notices the body slumped against the telephone pole ahead he barely waits for Izo to stop the car before he tumbles out.
“Marco!” Izo calls worriedly, the car parked badly on the streetside, but there’s a hint of warning in his tone. This could be a trap, and Marco’s far too worried to be able to react quickly. He ignores the voice in his head that pleads for him to listen to Izo’s caution, however, and narrowly sidesteps a puddle of bile to kneel by Sabo’s side
“Oh you idiot,” he breathes, carefully running his hand through Sabo’s sweaty hair and waking Sabo from his feverish doze.
“Get off me, Marco,” Sabo says, but sharp words have lost their edges and his hand - and phone - only flops uselessly against Marco’s wrist as he tries to push Marco away.
“Can you stand?” he asks, brow knit as he carefully catches Sabo’s hand, feeling it shake, and Sabo tilts his head back, the bare arch of his foot and his thigh his silent struggle to get his feet under him. Discomfort crawls up Marco’s throat, but they can’t just leave Sabo here; he needs a bed, at the very least, and Marco’s praying that he’ll consent to a check for any bad injuries, even if he won’t let the nurses take care of them. “I’m gonna pick you up, Sabo. Is that okay?”
“No, no- go away.” Sabo hisses, head lolling to the side as he stares stubbornly into the dark, “Ace is-”
“Ace is in the car,” Marco interrupts, and Sabo gives him a distrustful glare but finally nods, his lip curling as he tries to stifle a whimper. Marco can see his body shake, composure crumbling under the weight of the pain he’s in. He doesn’t stop to question why Ace isn’t by his side, thankfully, and merely gives a tiny nod, gripping tighter to Marco’s wrist.
Carefully, Marco slides Sabo’s arms around his neck, his hand sliding behind Sabo’s back and under his knees. With a grunt he picks Sabo up, and Sabo whimpers, pressing his head against Marco’s chest. “I want to go home,” he whispers, and Marco casts his eyes to the night sky and wishes for guidance. Wishes that he knew what to do with Sabo weak in his arms, when Sabo’s previous definition of ‘weakness’ had been a single slip of the tongue or the holes in his ironclad heart that had been carved to fit Ace and Luffy.
“I’ll take you to Ace,” he says, biting his tongue, but Sabo’s eyes have already slid shut and there’s heavy pain in the crease of his forehead. Thatch hovers worriedly as Marco picks his way across the sidewalk and to the car, and even Izo has a touch of concern in his face.
“Will he be-?” Izo asks, and Marco crushes the surge of hopelessness that rises in him.
“I don’t know. Let’s just get home, okay?”
Thatch cracks the door open for him, and Marco carefully lays Sabo in the back seat. He’s completely out of it now, and only gives a tiny, pained sob as he gets moved, curling up tightly. When Marco gets into the other side, the sight of him makes his chest clench, and he can’t help but run his hand through Sabo’s hair, watching as the tense hold on his shoulders loosens just slightly, his hand moving to grip Marco’s pant leg instead of his scraped palms.
He’s burning up, sweat collecting on his clammy skin, but Marco can feel the tremors that race through his body and how he shivers, teeth chattering.
“Please, hurry,” Marco says as Izo gets behind the wheel, and Izo glances back at him, giving a promise with his short nod. Marco’s attention shifts back to Sabo, more words brimming uselessly on his tongue, but he finds he can’t say them; Sabo loves doing things to spite him, after all, and Marco doesn’t want Sabo’s clever tongue to twist please be okay into something that it’s not.
He runs his hand through Sabo’s hair again, eyes caught on the tear tracks curving on his dirty cheeks, and his heart aches with what he wishes he could say.
