"In cities across the country, people of color, many of them low income, live in neighborhoods criss-crossed by major thoroughfares and highways.
The housing there is often cheaper — it’s not considered particularly desirable to wake up amid traffic fumes and fall asleep to the rumble of vehicles over asphalt.
But the price of living there is steep: Exhaust from all those cars and trucks leads to higher rates of childhood asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and pulmonary ailments. Many people die younger than they otherwise would have, and the medical costs and time lost to illness contributes to their poverty.
Imagine if none of those cars and trucks emitted any fumes at all, running instead on an electric charge. That would make a staggering difference in the trajectory, quality, and length of millions of lives, particularly those of young people growing up near freeways and other sources of air pollution, according to a study from the American Lung Association.
The study, released [February 28, 2024], found that a widespread transition to EVs could avoid nearly 3 million asthma attacks and hundreds of infant deaths, in addition to millions of lower and upper respiratory ailments...
Prior research by the American Lung Association found that 120 million people in the U.S. breathe unhealthy air daily, and 72 million live near a major trucking route — though, Barret added, there’s no safe threshold for air pollution. It affects everyone.
Bipartisan efforts to strengthen clean air standards have already made a difference across the country. In California, which, under the Clean Air Act, can set state rules stronger than national standards, 100 percent of new cars sold there must be zero emission by 2035.
[Note: The article doesn't explain this, but that is actually a much bigger deal than just California. Basically, due to historically extra terrible pollution, California is the only state that's allowed to allowed to set stronger emissions rules than the US government sets. However, one of the rules in the Clean Air Act is that any other state can choose to follow California's standards instead of the US government's. And California by itself is the world's fifth largest economy - ahead of all but four countries. California has a lot of buying power. So, between those two things, when California sets stricter standards for cars, the effects ripple outward massively, far beyond the state's borders.]
Truck manufacturers are, according to the state’s Air Resources Board, already exceeding anticipated zero-emissions truck sales, putting them two years ahead of schedule...
Other states have begun to take action, too, often reaching across partisan lines to do so. Maryland, Colorado, New Mexico, and Rhode Island adopted zero-emissions standards as of the end of 2023.
The Biden administration is taking similar steps, though it has slowed its progress after automakers and United Auto Workers pressured the administration to relax some of its more stringent EV transition requirements.
While Barret finds efforts to support the electrification of passenger vehicles exciting, he said the greatest culprits are diesel trucks. “These are 5 to 10 percent of the vehicles on the road, but they’re generating the majority of smog-forming emissions of ozone and nitrogen,” Barret said...
Lately, there’s been significant progress on truck decarbonization. The Biden administration has made promises to ensure that 30 percent of all big rigs sold are electric by 2030...

EVs are *part* of the solution. There are going to be people who insist on driving their own vehicle. Not to mention public transport is not always viable for disabled folks. And even if we were building trains and public transportation infrastructure, that is a multi-decade project.
But the laser focus on EVs is very disappointing. We need trains and buses and more trains and let's throw in a few more trains for good measure.

EVs are definitely better than ICE vehicles. And if we can build a renewable charging infrastructure by installing more solar on homes and near charging stations, while also reducing our reliance on coal power plants, EVs can be a decent part of the solution.
But the mining argument is silly. How do people think we get coal and oil? Have people not seen the effects of fracking? Mining for rare earth elements is fraught with issues currently. But pretty much every problem is mirrored in the extraction of fossil fuels. I guess we are just used to coal miners sacrificing their lungs and residents dealing with fracking faucets of fiery doom.

Should EVs be our sole focus for transportation?
No. Trains, trains, and more trains.
Are they better than ICE?
In most areas, yes. And hopefully in all areas in the near future.
Are there issues with the mining process?
Yes. Tragic and terrible issues.
Does fossil fuel extraction have basically all of those same issues?
Also, yes.
However, smart people are already trying to solve the impacts of rare earth mining. I don't know if we can ever make it a perfectly humane, low impact process. But we can certainly improve circumstances substantially. And the stuff that is mined will not just be set on fire and pumped into the air. It will be reused again and again.

For the past few years, electric vehicles have flooded onto America’s roads: Tesla Model 3s, Hyundai Ioniq 5s, even the occasional electric Hummer. In 2023, automakers sold almost 1.2 million all-electric cars to U.S. consumers, accounting for over 7 percent of total new car sales and a new national record.
But all those cars also need a place to plug in. And while the country is also expanding public charging, data show that EV sales are far outpacing growth in the U.S. charging network — endangering the transition to electric cars just as it’s starting to take off.
Between 2016 and 2023, EV registrations in the United States grew almost three times faster than the United States’ public charging infrastructure. In 2016, there wereseven electric cars for each public charging point; today, there’s more than 20 electric cars per charger.
“You often hear about the chicken and the egg question between chargers and electric vehicles,” said Corey Cantor, senior associate for electric vehicles at BloombergNEF, an energy research organization. “But overall the U.S. needs more public charging.”

so the party manifestos won’t be published for a few weeks prolly, but the Labour Party policymaking system means they have an internal “policy platform” agreed by the partisan structure that kinda dictates what goes in the manifesto, and a similar partisan structure has the final say on the manifesto itself. the platform is private and internal, but it’s been “seen and summarised”. so heres a couple of interesting bits:
nationalise the rail; allow greater municipal ownership of bus networks; more ev charging stations and increased ev subsidies
“fundamentally reform our system of energy supply, generation and transmission” via public ownership, but without stating whether or not this includes consumer services or if the private wholesale system will continue
abolish the Lords; votes at 16; NO commitment to abolishing FPTP
“support the recognition of” palestine (note wording, and note the fact this was written before 7 october)
ban conversion therapy including for trans people; “modernise the process of gender recognition to remove indignities for trans people, while upholding the Equality Act, its protected characteristics and its provision for single-sex exemptions” (obviously using terf dogwhistles to get out of meaningfully reforming the law, without clarifying their plans)
sewage monitoring and fines for sewage leaks by water companies – water remains private
“land-use framework” to organise farmland with the goal of biodiversity, close hunting loopholes
intellectual property reform, maybe? they’re very vague about that one
one-month waiting time for mental health services
“reform broken tuition fees system” – NO commitment to abolition and debt forgiveness, only this squirmy line
“robust regulation to protect people from online harms” – basically equivocating to allow any possible passage of a bad internet bill :/

So I definitely agree with you that those living rurally need different, non-urban solutions. I have lived both rurally and urbanely, and I’m a big proponent of improving public transit. I think a good solution (especially because a lot of rural people work in the city) is creating park and ride spaces where people can park for the day and transit into the city.
oh this is an INCREDIBLY important part of the puzzle and one i use whenever i can when i have to go into urban centers (which to be clear isn’t super often), both to reduce congestion and because to be honest driving in the city and driving in the country are completely different skillsets. but the fact remains i think we can work on some solutions in rural areas that don’t mean giving up your cars - brianna brucespringsteendotcom mentioned their friend who worked in urban planning and because of the area found that ev charging stations were more useful for sustainability initiatives than public transport because of the type of town it was, and i think we can continue to encourage changes in behavior without throwing out the entire system.
