i definitely think you're right and the defense is simply not world class. but i do think that the problems stretch beyond that. in a lot of ways i think the problems with this germany squad are the same as the problems bayern had last year, where the midfield was really weak and couldn't hold the ball between defense and attack, and then on top of that the defense wasn't quite in form and this caused big problems. this has really only been fixed by leon, sabi, and jo being in form and healthy and able to rotate based on who we're playing, PLUS the defense getting more in form/solid. i'm not totally sure where germany nt goes from here in terms of midfield--ilkay's not very young, and i don't think leon and jo are enough, at least not with the much weaker germany nt defense... we need options there too imo
