ritsu describing shigeo as “the standard of the world” is so funny because 1) ritsu’s whole existence is based around Being The Standard, first of all 2) he’s right. shigeo is the protagonist and the entire world is carefully designed to suit him and his experiences, development, and growth. the world literally does revolve around him (which is another way that ritsu’s line has been translated)

petra's "knife against my throat" quote fucks me up so bad I'm scrolling through her fe3h datamine page and crying again do you guys ever think about the horrifying implications of that A support and how it retroactively reveals that petra must have been carrying this burden for not only since you met her but even before the game started and yet she was always so sweet and kind no matter what even when she was being used as a hostage against the country and people she loves more than anything. and she was only fifteen. do you think about the change between her teenage and adult voice acting and how she sounds so much more cheerful as a teenager because she's in a space where she has friends and safety and can manage to keep up the facade she's never allowed to drop just long enough to make it through the day, as if even for a moment she can maybe allow herself to believe it. and how it changes when she's an adult and she's been thrust into the middle of a precarious, dangerous conflict where she still must carry the burden but no longer gets any reprieve as she is now tasked with solving the problems of her oppressor nation when those of her own must seem so insurmountable at times. "for brigid, I find strength to carry on." the rage in her voice if she is forced to die so far from home, without knowing if it will ever be free. and of course she does not resent edelgard and thinks of her fondly even when fighting the empire (shamir and petra's support,) which must be strange because they truly cared for each other as individuals, as friends and partners, as humans and as equals, and what must it be like to love someone on a personal level when your actions as rulers and figureheads have such greater consequences in politics and as a whole? if you recruit her to another route and she is given the chance to rebel against the empire that strangles her and her country, does the feeling of catharsis and freedom she feels as a princess and heiress conflict with the feelings she had about edelgard when she was once a teenage girl before anything else? and does it matter when no matter what she has to continue onward despite all else because if she doesn't, who will be there for brigid? who will save her home? this is one of the most viscerally haunting support lines in the whole game and also I think I'm going to be sick,

oh my god I am literally so stupid because it's like my third or fourth time seeing that scene but half of those were let's plays so like I've only just realized that when yusuke asks to stay at ann's house it's not just him suddenly assuming that she'll let him do it out of nowhere it's him misinterpreting a line from the meeting after madarame's defeat. when the topic of yusukes living situation comes up ryuji sarcastically says that yusuke "could always stay at ann's place" to make fun of ann but yusuke. didn’t realize he was joking. he took it literally and thought that the thieves were actually extending an invitation to stay at ann's house. oh my god

in contrast to claude who fittingly is a very contemporary protagonist in a couple of ways, dimitri and edelgard can both be seen as interpretations of classic hero king protagonists. dimitri is pretty obvious, but I think edelgard is actually an interesting twist - she's a literal knight in shining armor, she's this game's "chosen one" who bears the fire emblem, she's the self-sacrificial crown of adrestria, and she's even a genuine dragonslayer. so it's curious to think that her desire to act as a savior is what leads her to impose on the other countries' wills and be treated as an antagonist in all but her own route, resulting in a tragic end on the eagle's wings of her very own hamartia. I wonder if she might've reminded dimitri of some of faerghus' stories of martyr kings and knights - I wonder how she would have felt about that?

I also like to think about dimitri's chemistry with marianne and edelgard's chemistry with claude in the context of her role in verdant wind

specifically I think that marianne becomes a very important golden deer particularly in regards to the way claude contrasts against the other two lord's lack of value for their own lives. dimitri won't think twice about dying of rage or grief at the command of his ghosts, edelgard speaks consistently about her willingness to die for her cause and her greater good and will even discard the peaceful life she explicitly wants for herself at her core, and marianne just wants to die, but claude is famously the lord who can survive in every route - he is the only lord that demands that his soldiers not lay their lives on the line, he plans for a tactical retreat in all scenarios, and it never even occurs to him that the dream he loves so much could ever be worth more than his life or those around him. this, of course, is because his life has been regarded as forfeit and unnatural since the moment he was born, so it only makes sense that he is defensive (in general and) about the idea that a person's ability to live a full and fulfilling life is something precious to protect (also why lysithea is a golden deer, part of why ignatz is a golden deer, and may contribute to verdant wind as the route where byleth gets the most spotlight). for this reason I think mari and claude's dynamic is especially fascinating to me as a central contrast between the temptation of death versus the stubborn insistence on the value of living, and the same can be said for what their relationships with dimitri and edelgard highlight :)
